Domain Names Are Going To Be Changing

According to a news report that I heard on 680 News this morning domains names are about to greatly expand beyond the dot-com, and the dot-org so to speak. Son there will be dot-hotel, and perhaps even dot-sex to contend with if the people who govern domain names have their way.

Here is a snippet from the news item:

Get ready for an Internet gold rush, as the group that overseas Internet domain names will be considering a plan, Thursday, to relax the rules regarding the naming of websites.

Internet domain names are approved by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN).

The board of ICANN will be voting on two key proposals that could reshape the Web.

The first is a plan to allow domains that use letters other than Latin characters, specifically Chinese, Arabic or Cyrillic letters.

It'll also consider a plan to free-up choices for the dot-com suffix -- from the standard dot-com, dot-org, dot-ca -- to such as things like dot-hotel or dot-sex.
