Your Kids Can Master Their Money

Current research tells us today's kids and teens don't know how to budget or spend wisely. They have purchasing influence, but they aren't prepared to handle money. Parents presume that their kids "get it" or that they are learning these skills in school. Yet kids still need parental guidance on how to manage money. Your Kids Can Master Their Money reveals key traits of financially wise people and gives parents tools to instill those traits in their children.

You can grab your copy for as little as $8.00 US from the Nuttin' But bookstore! :D

When Is The Next Payless Shoes BOGO?

Last week was my 41st birthday, and my thoughtful eldest daughter gave me a $50.00 dollar gift certificate for Payless Shoes. I decided to go this weekend and take advantage of their winter clearance sales, and the above image is the result of my shopping trip.

Not bad for $50.00 bux eh!

Payless Shoes is one of my favourite stores both in-person, and online. Their "buy one, get one half off" sale or BOGO is a great way to save even more $$$$$ bux on their already good prices. I believe they will be having another BOGO event in February as they seem to run these every 8 weeks or so. Anyone have a hot tip on when the next BOGO may be? Please do share in the comments section. :D

St Thomas Real Estate - A Review

Map of U.S. Virgin Islands courtesy Wiki. You can see St Thomas in the upper left of the map.

"Saint Thomas is an island in the Caribbean Sea, a county and constituent district of the United States Virgin Islands (USVI), an unincorporated territory of the United States. Located on the island is the territorial capital and port of Charlotte Amalie."

Today in Toronto, Canada (which is where I am typing to you from) it is minus fourteen degrees Celsius => in other words it is frightfully cold. Aside from that regular readers know that I have been under the weather of late, therefore I jumped at the opportunity to go have a look at this online resource for St Thomas Real Estate. B)

Firstly, the website for REMAX Dream Properties is a breeeze to use for the average web surfer. The site itself is set up to be very easy to navigate, and each category of property be it home, business, or rental vaction spot is easily found through their search set-up. This includes different sections for both potential buyers, and sellers.

Virtually all of the property listings come with some type of photo to give you a good idea of what you are looking at along with descriptive write-ups.

I was definitely left with the impression that REMAX Dream Properties are the leading authorities on St. Thomas real estate.

Paper Airplanes In Space

I thought this was too cool, and had to share!

Researchers from the University of Tokyo have teamed up with members of the Japan Origami Airplane Association to develop a paper aircraft capable of surviving the flight from the International Space Station to the Earth’s surface.

The researchers are scheduled to begin testing the strength and heat resistance of an 8 centimeter (3.1 in) long prototype on January 17 in an ultra-high-speed wind tunnel at the University of Tokyo’s Okashiwa campus (Chiba prefecture). In the tests, the origami glider — which is shaped like the Space Shuttle and has been treated to withstand intense heat — will be subjected to wind speeds of Mach 7, or about 8,600 kilometers (5,300 miles) per hour.

A large spacecraft such as the Space Shuttle can reach speeds of up to Mach 20 (over 15,200 mph) when it re-enters the Earth’s atmosphere, and friction with the air heats the outer surface to extreme temperatures. The much lighter origami aircraft, which the researchers claim will come down more slowly, is not expected to burn up on re-entry.

No launch date has been set for the paper spaceplane, but Shinji Suzuki, an aerospace engineering professor at the University of Tokyo, is thinking ahead. “We hope the space station crew will write a message of peace on the plane before they launch it,” says Suzuki. “We don’t know where in the world the plane will land, but it would be nice to send a message to whoever finds it.”

Pink Tentacle

I love origami, but have never been any good at it myself. My kiddos though have enjoyed making all sorts of paper sculptures through origami.

Art meets science. Now that is cool! :D

Curry Hell Boss Passes Away

A popular British restaurateur, who claimed to serve the world's hottest curry, has passed away according to the BBC. I didn't know the man... but I like him. I also believe I saw a travel documentary that featured his restaurant. Here is a snippet from the BBC article:

Abdul Latif, offered the famous dish - Curry Hell - free to any customer who could finish it at his Newcastle diner.

The 52-year-old became a renowned local businessman thanks to his talent for publicity and regular appearances in cult adult comic Viz.

He died of a heart attack at his home in the city's Gosforth area in the early hours of Sunday.

Mr Latif's restaurant, which used to be called Rupali, enjoyed a high profile in recent years.

It features in the Guinness Book of Records for the world's longest-distance curry delivery - from Newcastle to Sydney.

Social Networking & Privacy Issues

Are you a Facebooker or Facebook user? If so do you worry about how your private info is being handled?

I am listed on Facebook, and I was not overly concerned until I read this BBC article. Here is a snippet:

Facebook is to be quizzed about its data protection policies by the Information Commissioner's Office.

The investigation follows a complaint by a user of the social network who was unable to fully delete their profile even after terminating their account.

Currently, personal information remains on Facebook's servers even after a user deactivates an account.

Facebook has said it believes its policy is in "full compliance with UK data protection law".

"We take the concerns of the ICO [Information Commissioner's Office] and our user's privacy very seriously and are committed to working with the ICO to maintain a trusted environment for all Facebook users and ensure compliance with UK law," said a statement from the site.

Full BBC Article Here

While this does raise some flags with me in regards to Facebook I would never put something online that I would be concerned about now or in the future. I think if we really consider that nothing can ever truly be deleted from the www and use some common sense then privacy issues would not be such a big deal.

Social networking can be a great way to promote websites, businesses, and yourself. :D

Understanding Your Dogs Bark Literally

I have two dogs, and would pay quite a hefty sum for a gadget that could actually translate their bark. Sure more often than not I know what they want, "food, take me out, walk, food, take me out," you get the idea. However, a doggie Babel Fish would be too cool in my opinion. What got me on this topic is an article posted to Live Science entitled: Computer Understands Barking Dogs

Here is a snippet:

Artificially intelligent Dr. Doolittles can understand dog barks as good or better than humans do.

These findings suggest computers might significantly help people comprehend animal communication.

Scientists tested artificially intelligent software on more than 6,000 barks from 14 Hungarian sheepdogs. Six different kinds of barks were taped:

* Barks for strangers were recorded when a researcher approached a dog's owner's home when the owner was away.
* Barks during fights were recorded at dog training schools, when a trainer encouraged dogs to bite the glove on the trainer's arms and bark aggressively.
* Barks for walks were recorded when owners behaved as if they were preparing to go for a walk with their dogs.
* Barks for balls were recorded when owners held balls in front of dogs.
* Barks during playtime were recorded when owners played tug-of-war or similar games with dogs.
* Barks made when alone were recorded when owners tied dogs to trees in a park and then walked out of sight.

After analyzing digital versions of the barks, overall the computer program correctly identified the kinds of barks the dogs made 43 percent of the time — about the same as humans' 40 percent, said researcher Csaba Molnár, an ethologist at Eötvös Loránd University in Hungary. The software identified 'walk' and 'ball' barks better than people, although people identified 'play' and 'alone' barks better than the software.

Business is Business

Business is Business... I 'spose.

When a company or a person says something, I assume they mean it.

Way back when, during the height of the anti-trust cases against Microsoft, I saw a company emerge... and online company that seemed to be an ever-growing David to an existing Goliath that said their company would do no evil.

In fact, their company philosophy, even now, has this built in...

6. You can make money without doing evil.

Google stood out as almost a beacon to the world about how a small company could go head-to-head against Bill Gates' empire and not only survive and thrive... but "win".

All these blogs... all the ones on DoubleDeckerBuses.Org and even our Paranormal Blog have enjoyed some decent success with advertising... sponsored posts mostly.

These efforts have truly helped our family who were literally drowning in debt and facing very bleak prospects after The Bus Man (Matthew) was unemployed for a long while when his company closed their Toronto offices a number of years back and left him laid off. The added income was not tremendous... we weren't about to buy our first Rolls Royce and jet off to the Bahamas for the Winter... but it put food on the table and allowed us to manage without going further into decline.

These ads, for the most part, were based on advertisers who used "Google Page Rank" to determine who would get their business... and thanks to our blogs being fairly substantial and offering a lot of good quality content (so we were told,) we did nicely... and the fiscal storms were avoided.

"Page Rank" is determined by an algorithm which back-tracks links to sites... more links, better page rank. This was changed when a few companies, figuring this out, set up "link farms" where they'd sell links to artificially bump up page ranks. Of course, Google admitted there were other "bits" of the algorithm that helped determine the worthiness of a webpage... those bits were more than a little confusing to understand... and seemed to change every so often.

Google is a business. They don't have to support the online world, but their word on "Page Rank" is fairly biblical in it's interpretation with advertisers... and when they recently changed the algorithm to include "knocks" against people that used things like "Pay-Per-Post" (now Izea,) as the advertisers who paid for "posts" got links they "paid" for, it hurt a lot of people... including us.

Most of our blogs went from a Page Rank of between 2 and 4 to a zero within the last three months... in fact, all our blogs are currently "Page Rank Zero".

This means we went from enough advertising revenue to work our way out of debt, to basically enough money to get by, and as of today, not enough to make it.

So, in essence, to "punish" those advertisers who pay for links and ads, they hurt us... although Google AdSense/AdWords, of course, is not affected.

Now, I understand, again, that Google is a business... they don't need to "support" possible revenue competition with other advertisers... and need to protect their "rankings"... but it does seem, by all accounts, that they are selectively killing opportunities because of competition... an in so doing, throttle our ability to make money... and when a larger company strangles out a smaller company from the market, this is usually considered a bit of an "evil" act.

"Do No Evil" as a coverall seems to now be "Do No Evil to Google"...

Again, that's fine... but it does seem to be a bit hypocritical.

To Izea's credit, they are offering their own stats to advertisers called "Real Rank" to kind of combat Google's ranking stranglehold...

Sadly, it may be too little too late.

"Google" is now not just a company, but a verb in the dictionary.

Think of it this way...

How many people go to the store to buy "facial tissue" or ask for a "facial tissue" when they sneeze?

How many ask or go to buy Kleenex?

To many, especially "non-geeks", the "internet" is synonymous with "Google".

Ergo: Advertisers who are not "tech savvy" will always fall back to what they know... which, in this case is Google.

Granted, there is a caveat in this...

In the 1980's and early 1990's, "Apple" computers really were the only "home computer" out there. Their brand name and brand recognition were unparalleled in the computing world...

Trouble was, if you wanted a computer, you had to go to only an authorized Apple dealer. Upgrades? Apple products only. Software? Only Apple or "Apple Approved".

Along came IBM's Personal Computer. IBM originally wanted to be like Apple... but soon, clones hit the market. Their operating system maker started selling to other companies. People developed new hardware and software away from IBM...

If you wanted a computer, you could go to any computer shop. Upgrade? Any computer retailer could help. Software? A wide open market.

Today, only 18% of computers on the desks of people on the planet are the much vaunted Apple... they literally "proprietarized" themselves out of business.

The way Google appears to be going is if you want to have a good page rank, you must only deal in Google approved advertising. Better yet, you should only deal with Google directly.

This is a sound business model... until...

Once you've killed all alternatives, what's left?

Will Google achieve a sort-of monopoly on advertising... or will advertisers start to look elsewhere... to things like Real Rank?

Eventually, if the trend continues, it will be the latter.

Sadly for us, that will be too late.

With Google's throttling of our Page Rank and our drop in revenues, we will need to look for other ways to bring home the kibble for our puppies... and so doing, may not be able to maintain all our blogs...

As stated, our blogs are MOSTLY non-advertising... some of our blogs are cited (online and off) in Wiki and various university and student papers... but apparently, according to Page Rank, are worthless... so we may need to scale back in putting on content in favour of making money to survive.

Ergo (again): In Googles seeming fervour to keep pure the information on the internet, they will be killing content because of this throttle of income.

"Do No Evil".

We hope there will be some change... and we don't know what our future will bring... and we hope that advertisers (especially through Izea) see the possible error of Google's ways and switch away from Page Rank...

...but until then...

Looking at Googles business principals again...

4. Democracy on the web works.

From what we're reading... and what we're seeing... Google had best hope this isn't entirely accurate. A rebellion may not be too far away...

PS: I had a much stronger post all done up, and then I deleted it. I am trying to be fair...just very sad right now. :(

Shout Out To DreamHost Customers

If you are an unhappy client with Dreamhost listen up because a company by the name of Lunarpages seriously wants your business. How serious are they you might be wondering? If you are then you have got to check out Lunarpages Offer for DreamHost Customers by giving this linky some clicky love. :D

Basically Lunarpages has created a coupon especially for former Dreamhost clients to use when hooking up with them. This coupon entitles the user to receive $40 off hosting with Lunarpages. Now that in and of itself is really cool in my opinion, however they are willing to do even more for your business.

I have read that they are willing to offer Dreamhost customers who are unhappy with their current Dreamhost contracts up to 9 months of paid time that the customer has already spent. Now that is very cool in my own humble opinion! B) And tells me that Lunarpages must be fairly confident in their own services to be able to offer that much. In other words I believe it would be safe for us to assume that this company feels that people who hook up with them for hosting services are going to be happy enough to want to stick around as a loyal customer.

You are probably quite curious at this point as to exactly what types of services Lunarpages offers its clients. After I heard of their offer to Dreamhost customers I know I was certainly curious as to what they've got.

The basic Lunarpages plan comes with 15,000GB of Transfer and 1,500GB of storage, a free domain name, and 10 add-on domains for just $6.95 a month. The plan actually comes with a lot more, so if this has whet your appetitive please do surf on over to the website, and get further details.

I also want to mention at this point that Lunarpages has been around for several years, and has already built up a happy clientèle, so this bail out for Dreamhost customers is pretty cool.

If you are interested in becoming a possible Lunarpages affiliate check out this page here:

Payouts for selling a dedicated hosting plan is a $180 bux!

MySpace Helps Out Parents

Finally some good news is forthcoming for parents from social networking giant MySpace. MySpace has agreed to help in fighting child predators online, while at the same time giving parents the ability to block their kids from joining up in the first place. Here is a snippet from a NY Times article in regards:

Representatives from MySpace and the attorneys general of 49 states are announcing a new partnership to fight sexual predators and clean up social networks.

Among the dozens of measures MySpace has agreed to take, the social network will let parents submit the e-mail addresses of their children, so the company can prevent anyone from using that address to set up a profile. It will also set the profiles of all 16 and 17-year-olds to private, so only their established online friends can visit their pages - essentially creating a “closed” section for users under age 18.

MySpace also promises to hire a contractor to identify and delete pornographic images on the site. And the company will take charge of an Internet safety technical task force to develop an age and identity verification tools for social networking sites.

I’m not sure how this is going to work - such systems are either notoriously easy to circumvent or so cumbersome that they stymie sign-ups. Such measures will also clearly be easier to carry out for MySpace’s rival, Facebook, which already has a more privacy-oriented architecture, and has encouraged users from the beginning to use their real identities.

But the attorneys general are heralding this as a big step and the phrase “landmark partnership” is being bandied about quite a bit in the news conference.

Full NY Times Article Here

I see this as a very positive step in the right direction by the powers that be at MySpace. Finally parents will have direct control through MySpace itself. Kudos to MySpace for helping with this imternet-age family issue! :D

Lets Be Happy For No Reason

Hey my peeps, today I am going to give you all the scoop on Marci Shimoff's new book, which is called Happy For No Reason. Marci is one of the teachers of "The Secret" and is well respected in the self-help community. This newest book of hers is so exciting because in part it demonstrates how the granddaughter of famed author Ernest Hemingway learned to master her own self esteem, and poor body image through The Sedona Method (award winning actress Mariel Hemingway). And because it promises it will help you to achieve the same!

I have to admit that I am highly intrigued by the successes, and endorsements this method has been given including Marci's good word on the subject. Marci is a graduate of this method.

I do not know about you, but I can personally count dozens of people myself included that could benefit from the teachings to be found through The Sedona Method. If you feel the same way you might just want to click on over to the site I have linked to in this post. They are not only offering The Sedona Method course as written about by Marci Shimoff, but they are right now offering FREE DVD, MP3, and CD gifts to help you on your way. Very cool!

Want the public to like your product better?

Jack up the cost! Weird eh?! Actually I was not overly surprised when I read this news item. Here is a snippet:

WASHINGTON - Want people to like your product more? Raise the price.

That seems to be the lesson from a new study in which people were asked to taste wines marked with different prices. Researchers scanned the brains of the testers and found that the part of the brain that records pleasure lit up more for the more pricey vintages.

And that was true even when - unknown to the testers - they were sipping a wine that they had liked less when it had a lower price tag.

Antonio Rangel and colleagues at California Institute of Technology thought perceptions of higher price meaning higher quality could influence people, so they decided to test the idea.

They asked 20 people to sample wine while undergoing functional MRI's of their brain activity. The subjects were told they were tasting five different Cabernet Sauvignons sold at different prices.

However, there were actually only three wines sampled, two being offered twice, marked with different prices.

Full CBC Article Here

Despite my lack of surprise, I must admit I cannot understand why so many feel that the higher an item is priced the better in quality it is. Of course this is not necessairily true, and in fact the opposite may in fact be accurate depending on the product.

The 10 Worst PC Keyboards of All Time

So why did I think it was so funny? Well I found it to be funny because I have owned almost all of these that are listed in the article at one time or another!

I did not own any of these:

Commodore 64 - I had the cheaper (but same keyboard) model, the Vic 20
Never owned a Timex Sinclair 2068
Nor a Mattel Aquarius
Nor a Commodore PET 2001

...but I've had the rest!

So, out of ten... I owned 5 1/2 of them at one point!!!!

The Word On Accountancy Jobs Abroad

I had the opportunity to check out the Accountancy Jobs Abroad website over at:

The company specialise in relocating professionals within the financial community to off-shore, and exotic locales. The buzz on this hot online executive job agency is all positive. Check out the press release below:

Press Release: has experienced a boost to its 2008 plans by acquiring several clients in the Middle East region. The business since its inception in October 2007 has principally signed clients from the Cayman Islands and Bermuda. However mirroring the expansion in the GCC region in general, the company has experienced a number of enquiries from the Middle East from companies who wish to recruit finance professionals and accountants.

The web based financial recruitment consultant has also seen an ever increasing requirement for talented finance professionals from the UK Channel Islands, namely the Isle of Man, Jersey and Guernsey. Director Mike Williams commented “…as companies consider their staffing requirements for 2008 we have been contacted by a number of new and dynamic companies who are finding that traditional bricks and mortar recruitment consultancies are not offering the right amount of flexibility to service their needs. We are finding that our tailor-made recruitment solutions fit their requirements perfectly and as such we are looking forward to an exciting 2008 as are many of our prospective employees who we will be placing in exciting and prosperous locations.”

The company continues to expand in Bermuda and the Cayman Island, and also the company is developing potential clients in Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Hong Kong and China. The company plans to have vacancies in each of these countries by mid-2008.

Tata Motors Worlds Cheapest Cars

Tata Motors has unveiled the Tata Nano (above) at India's biggest car show in the capital of Delhi. I personally think it looks kinda cute!

The Nano is already being called the "people's car" because of its very competitive price, approx. $2,500 U.S. Here is a snippet from an article on the BBC:

The vehicle, called the Tata Nano, will sell for 100,000 rupees or $2,500 (£1,277) and enable those in developing countries to move to four wheels.

The four-door five-seater car, which goes on sale later this year, has a 33bhp, 624cc, engine at the rear.

It has no air conditioning, no electric windows and no power steering, but two deluxe models will be on offer.

Tata will initially make about 250,000 Nanos and expects eventual annual demand of one million cars.

The price will be slightly more than the 100,000 once tax and other costs are taken into consideration.

The Nano release comes as India's domestic car market is predicted to soar in the coming years on the back of the country's fast-growing economy and increased consumer wealth.

The Scoop On Talkswitch

Good morning my peeps! Today I am offering up to you my own personal review of Talkswitch as offered by Best Deal. If you have not heard of it before what I am writing about is the Talkswitch PBX Phone Systems and its related services. These are premier in offering up the finest communication hub for small to medium business needs particularly when the business in question has more than one location. It really is a terrific means of keeping everyone in touch.

Now the Best Deal website is the place to learn about Talkswitch in my own humble opinion, and to be quite blunt get the "Best Deal" ... get it! ;) Good! And they service every city and town right across the United States so are quite handy, and convenient! B)

Check out the different systems that are available on their site, and the bevy of freebies that come with like live training, and support, Talkswitch tutorial-videos, free Fed-Ex shipping (how cool is that!) music cd for on-hold calls, and more coolio stuff too numerous to mention within the scope of this blog entry. Surf on over to check it out!

If I sound all fired up it is because I was sincerely impressed with the level of client support that Best Deal is offering to the consumer, and as you know I personally put emphasis on excellent customer service when reviewing any product, service, and/or company.

Go have a look at what they are offering, just click on one of the linkys above.

The Aquarium Toilet

As a very small kid I used to have this strange fantasy about catching fish in the toilet bowl .... what can I say I was a very weird little kid.....

When I cam across the Aquarium Toilet all those strange childhood thoughts came back, but as an adult ummmm I do not think I would be all that comfortable using a loo like the one above if it was functioning.

Here is what had to say about it:

Teach a man to fish, and you have fed him for a lifetime. Put some fish in a man's toilet, and he will never have a boring trip to the pot again. This is the clever thinking behind the Fish 'n Flush.

Fish 'n Flush is a patented, two-piece aquarium toilet tank, designed by AquaOne Technologies, Inc., an innovator of water-management systems. The aquarium has a 2.2-gallon capacity. When you flush, it looks like all the water is draining out of the tank and the fish are going down, but it's an optical illusion: the fish are actually safe in an outer aquarium made of high-polished plastic. What you see draining is the toilet water in a separate tank behind the aquarium.

So what do you all think? Would you want one of these in your bathroom?

Handy Peel Infomercial has this to say about the above: "Knife chick, here, is not an enthusiastic food preparer. We know this because her scenes are in black and white, and because she would seemingly rather look anywhere but at the knife she is wielding and the 1-inch-thick slices of potato she is lopping off. When the inevitable happens (she cuts herself), she is exasperated with the whole concept of this 2-million-year-old technology."

I say this is one creepy product, in fact I am still not overly convinced the vid clip above is not a spoof! Has anyone actually seen this on tv or better yet tried out the "Handy Peel" product?

Snow In Toronto - Happy New Years Day 2008

I woke up rather early this morning after spending a lovely New Year's Eve with my family to a winter wonderland here in Toronto. The city is being covered in snow, and the scene outside for those up and about is quite magical in my opinion. Where was this in Christmas morning!!!

All the best to you for 2008!!!
