Let's Go To The Ex

By "Ex" I mean the Canadian National Exhibition of course! We spent the day at the "Ex" yesterday, and came away with some fantastic bargains, such as three down filled jackets from the Urban Behaviour liquidation for $20 bux. Suzy Shier was also there, and we purchased numerous items such as jeans, shirts, sweaters, etc at 2 for $5.00 bux! More about all these great finds later. Today will be spent sorting through items, and generally resting up after our marathon 10 hour shopping spree! :D

If you are in the Toronto, Canada area or in easy commute the bargain shopping alone is definitely worth the price of admission!

Wal-Mart Discontinues Selling Certain Dog Treats

Egads! More pet treats to be concerned about. Here is a snippet from Yahoo News:

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. - Tests of two Chinese brands of dog treats sold at Wal-Mart stores found traces of melamine, a chemical agent that led to another massive pet food recall in March, a spokeswoman said Tuesday.

Wal-Mart Stores Inc. quietly stopped selling Chicken Jerky Strips from Import-Pingyang Pet Product Co. and Chicken Jerky from Shanghai Bestro Trading in July, after customers said the products sickened their pets.

No recall was announced at that time, but Wal-Mart said in a statement Tuesday that customers who bought one of the products should return it to the nearest store for a refund.

Since the Menu pet food scare I have personally been very cautious with everything I purchase for my own dogs. In fact more often then not now that I am home I have been making my own dog food, and treats.

I would like to start promoting online shops that do sell all natural foods, and treats, and will be doing some research on this in the coming weeks along with sites that give recipes for treats to make at home. If you know of any good sites, please do drop me a line or leave me a comment. :D

Online Poker Room Review Site

Happy weekend my peeps! Today I had the opportunity to visit, and offer up a review of an online poker room review site that in part dishes up the latest news, and information regarding UK Poker Sites.

Internet-Poker.co.uk is an extensive website. In fact to give this site a proper review it took quite a bit of surfing time through the various pages. The website is that information packed!

The highlight of this site is Internet Poker Reviews, which refreshingly appear to be quite honest in opinion. In other words you will find an actual review of various sites, and not just "this is the greatest poker site ever, click here."

This site is UK based, but it also offers up information, and reviews of US Poker Rooms or sites that are US based poker player friendly. And while not an American online poker player myself, I did enjoy the rant on the "Port Security Act" that can be found on the page linked to within this paragraph. Food for thought!

If you enjoy online poker you will benefit from visiting Internet-Poker.co.uk for more then just the reviews. There are articles suited for both beginners, and the more advanced player. They list bonus codes, and the very latest poker news. Thankfully they do provide a site search function because again it is that extensive. I wasn't kidding!

They also give you an option for membership. You can join, or you can choose to view all of their content as a non-member.

Cheers!

What Happens When A Blogger Dies?

Maybe it was the article I read earlier on Blogger Depression or maybe it is a bit of the end of the summer blues kicking in a bit early? Either way I started to feel a bit morbid this afternoon, and the question of what happens to a blog after the blogger dies started swimming in my head.

If something were to happen to me hubby has the keys so to speak to all of my blogs, and as a fellow blogger I know that he would at least put up an announcement letting the regular readers know that I had passed on, but what of bloggers that perhaps do not have this option?

I know that if one of my faves stopped blogging I would wonder what happened, and with the friendships I have built some with people on the other end of the planet I would worry, and I would want to know.

I wonder if maybe in this blogging age it might be a good idea to leave passwords, email contacts in a will?

Blogger Depression

What happens when blogging just doesn't seem fun any more? Could be blogger depression.

Iran Closes Down Western Barber Shops

According to a BBC news article Iran has decided to get tough, and force the closure of several barber shops in, and around the capital city Tehran. These shops apparently offered "western-style" (whatever that means) hair cuts, and tattoos.

Here is a snippet from the article:

The authorities say the barbers were encouraging un-Islamic behaviour by offering Western hairstyles, tattooing and also eyebrow-plucking for men.

Police say they have inspected more than 700 shops during a two-week crackdown in the city.

The move is part of an annual campaign against what is known locally as bad hijab, or un-Islamic clothing, that this year is also targeting men.

Hundreds of women and men have already been cautioned.

Police say that as well as avoiding Western hairstyles and make up, barbers should not pluck customers' eyebrows.

Full BBC Article Here

Personally, I consider myself a tolerant person who tries to understand all points of view, but this action does strike me as very extreme. How can eyebrow plucking be considered wrong or offensive? And have tattoos not been around since pre-biblical times? I feel bad for the shop keepers who were only trying to make a living for themselves, and their families by providing a service that is obviously in demand.

Antibacterial Hand Gel

Yesterday was spent in part stocking up on back-to-school supplies for the kiddos. Yep, it is that time of year again! I blogged about these purchases earlier today on the Urban Zoo.

One of my numerous purchases included Purell hand sanitizer gel, which a couple of people expressed a bit of surprise that I added to my shopping list.

I first started carrying a purse-sized version of this gel during the SARS scare of a few years back. Hubby has also used it on a regular basis at work when he provides desk top support. As a techie he has to touch a lot of keyboards, etc that can be loaded with germs.

Naturally we got the kids to start taking it with them to school. As an example I have instructed them to use it immediately after sneezing into their hands in order to prevent the spread of possible cold/flu germs.

Antibacterial hand gel is a great substitute when traditional hand washing is impossible or cannot be accomplished in a timely manner, and we have noticed since using it illnesses in this house have been greatly reduced!

Would You Steal Wireless?

Most mornings I play catch up with international news via the BBC website. I find their reporting accurate, fast, and refreshingly unbiased for the most part.

Today I stumbled across an article on their site with the intriguing title of, "Is stealing wireless wrong?" which is something I have never contemplated before, much less done.

Personally my gut reaction is to say of course it is wrong, but the comments added to the BBC site show that not everyone agrees with my opinion.

What are your thoughts on this? Is this something you would do given the opportunity? Is it cheating the system? Should the word "borrow" be used as opposed to "steal" as the latter absolutely implies a crime is being committed?

Planning The Perfect Vacation In The US Virgin Islands

Summer time is soon coming to a close in the northern hemisphere, and before we know it the colder weather, ice, and snow will soon be part of our daily lives yet again. I know, this is not exactly a fun or relaxing thing to contemplate now is it.....

I can tell you what is a fun thing to think about, and that is a dream winter getaway to the US Virgin Islands, which provides the means to a warm, and safe dream vacation in the Caribbean. In fact did you know it is one of the top tourist destinations in the sunny south? And with good reason!

What Happened With Skype?

If you are one of the millions of Skype users like us who were affected by the recent three day outage read on...

Skype has issued an official apology to it's users, and an explanation. Here is a snippet from the BBC:

Net phone firm Skype says its service is up and running again after three days of "unprecedented" disruption.

The problems with the service began on 16 August and stopped millions of people logging in and making calls.

Skype said the ongoing disruption was caused by an unexpected interaction between its servers and users' PCs.

Despite Skype's claim to have fixed the problems some subscribers reported that they had trouble making calls throughout the weekend.

Full BBC Article Here

Personally this is the first time we have experienced this type of disruption. I remember how happy I was with the service the first time I placed a call to my friend in British Columbia, Canada over 4,000 miles away, and how clear the call was. Over all I'm happy using Skype.

Digital Print Services

I LOVE to blog about industries that I have intimate knowledge of, and for many years my professional life encompassed the graphics, and communications field. In part this is why I was delighted to have the opportunity to visit, and review a business website that provides information on digital printing services as I can bring my own extensive knowledge on the subject to the table as well as my thoughts, and opinions being a consumer.

In my opinion the appearance of printed marketing materials cannot be stressed enough. The quality of the product, and it's ability to get the focus of your business across is imperative in making it successful. This is where a company like Channel M Communications can really be of good use in providing quality printed materials, and highly competitive pricing. With the use of digital technology, projects through them can be turned around in as little as 24 hours making their services that much more appealing!

No matter what your business printing needs, Channel M Communications can provide you with cost effective solutions including personalised direct mailing options that I can tell you from my time spent within the industry is a proven marketing strategy that works.

You may have a look at their website, and explore the services being offered by clicking on the link provided within this blog entry or call them directly via this number +17033784772 and speak with one of their knowledgeable staff members.

Ground Breaking Book In Child Behavioural Challenges

I am very excited to introduce you to this book! Firstly because I believe in the importance of it, and secondly because it was authored by my dear friend Dr. Carla Wills-Brandon who has dedicated her life to helping others.

Here is a snippet in regards to this book's purpose:

RAPID RESPONSE PROGRAM TO INTERVENTION (RRP-TI - 2007) fills a gap which has long been overlooked. This groundbreaking program is designed to address the special needs of children in the public school setting with behavioral difficulties. Currently, such students have two options. They can be mainstreamed into regular school populations or sent to expensive, private facilities. With this innovative program children are brought back to the public school setting to prepare for a better future, in a positive atmosphere with:

•Clear suggestions for setting up a self contained classroom to address student behavioral challenges
•Strategies for creatively teaching social skills and expected classroom behavior
•Guidelines for boundary building – the expression of appropriate emotion
•RRP-TI Family Program, addressing the needs of parents and caregivers
•Communication information and strategies for effective interfacing with parents
•Colorful Behavior Contracts, Goal Charts and more!

While this book is geared towards educators it would in my opinion be of great benefit to parents as well. For those who may not have read Carla's other books, she writes in a clear and easy to understand manner that is of value to both the lay person, and professional.

Payday Loan Resource

Payday, and cash advanced loans were a hot button topic in Canada a couple of weeks ago as new rules were passed in order to protect consumers. These loans are easy to obtain for most, and therefore while they can in fact be handy, they can also set people up to go into further debt. It is important that consumers know exactly what they are getting into before applying for a payday loan or cash advance.

It was with much interest earlier this morning that I had the opportunity to have a look at PaydayLoansABC.com, which is an online resource specific to payday loans.

Firstly, the site provides a state by state guide in order to find lenders via an easy to use drop down box. This is located on the main page of the site, and may also be accessed from the navigation bar. It is a handy feature for those seeking to find a lender online.

My primary interest in the site was in the articles that they provide in the way of the latest news from, and about the payday loan industry. This includes articles that are not so flattering, and provide good cautionary information to the consumers who read them.

PaydayLoansABC.com does provide consumer testimonials, but I believe they would benefit from a forum or message board where borrowers could communicate with each other, and make the site more interactive.

If you are looking for info on no faxing payday loans, and the application process click on one of the links provided in this entry.

BOGO (Buy One Get One 1/2 Price at Payless Shoes) is hot!!! This is especially true if you do not mind buying off season or last years styles.

Yesterday I picked up these two pairs of boots. Originally they retailed last winter for between $70.00-$80.00 respectively. The store knocked them down until they were each just $10.00, and with BOGO plus taxes I purchased both for $15.90 total!!!!

When hunting around the Payless shops be certain to look at their back shelves, and in the off-season areas of the store to find these clearance items.

I'm telling you this find made my bargain-hunter heart flutter. I intend to keep these for myself, but I could easily resell them on eBay for double what I paid, and they would still be a huge savings for any potential buyer.

Happy Shopping!

Switching Banks And Bank Accounts

Several months ago my financial institution decided it was going to amalgamate some of its branches to a new larger one, and this decision directly affected me because one of the branches set to move was my home branch. I can tell you that I wasn't to happy about it. The new super branch is farther away from me, and in an area of the city I tend to avoid for personal reasons.

Cranky as I was I took the time to do some research on other financial institutions much closer to home, and the different types of Bank accounts they offer, with a particular eye to Savings accounts that offered good rates on my money.

I am very happy to let you my readers know that just last week I opened a new Savings account that I am very pleased with despite the hassle of switching banks, at a convenient location!

In the very near future I plan to make an appointment at this financial institution to discuss what they offer in the way of business bank accounts as I work towards building an online business of my own.

Twenty Five Years Of Compact Discs

Wow! It was with a bit of surprise that I came across this terrific BBC article on the history of the cd, and how it has changed forever the music industry. Here is a brief snippet:

The first compact disc was produced exactly 25 years ago in a factory in Germany after years of development by Philips and Sony. We take a look at the humble disc's history and how it shaped the music landscape.

Read the Full BBC Article Here

I say it was with surprise that I read the above article because despite taking the cd for granted as an everyday part of life I still clearly remember the good old days of vinyl. Heck, I remember 8-track! Has it really been that long ....

While the introduction of cds were a terrific move forward in the evolution of the industry I still occasionally miss the sweet sound of vinyl, call me old fashioned, but I do believe records used to sound way better....but then again it may just be my hearing that's to blame.

Happy B-Day Compact Discs!

Recycling Old Cell Phones

There are times when I feel as "old as the hills." My regular blog readers will already know that I turned forty years old this past year. And reaching this milestone has been cause on certain occasions to reflect back, and look at all the changes in the world since 1967, which was the year of my birth.

Heck! Never mind all of the changes over the past forty years, how about the vast differences in lifestyles over the past twenty! For instance at the age of twenty ownership of a mobile phone or car phone was the domain of the rich. It was certainly not something I could afford, nor something that anyone I knew personally had.

Jump twenty years to the future, and I cannot dream of living without my cell phone. Each member of our family including all three of my kids (they are teens) have cell phones, and we can keep in touch with each other through an open line of communication 24/7. What an amazing piece of technology if you sit back, and think about it! And of course virtually everyone I now know owns their own cell phone.

With every good thing though, there will always be a down side. In the case of cell phones because they are so prevalent, and affordable there is a serious, and growing concern of what to do with older ones as we upgrade to newer models, and how if possible they can safely be disposed of with minimal impact to our environment.

Wirefly.org has some solutions to this very real issue. Did you know that you can donate your old cell phone for cash? How cool is that! Or did you know that you can support several charities by recycling your old phone? Again, what a great way to help our environment, and other worthy programs all at the same time!

If you have an old cell phone surf on over to Wirefly.org and find out what your options are for disposing of it safely! There is nothing more worthier in my opinion then for each of us to do our part to keep our world clean, which includes recycling old cell phones.

Cheers!

My Love Affair With Socks

Multi-Stripe Socks

I believe in a polished look from head to toe, and this very much includes the look, and feel of my socks. You can say I have a wee bit of a sock fetish, but in reality it probably has more to do with the over all comfort of my feet.

Hue socks cater to both of my sock requirements because they are comfortable, and look very smart when worn. I think the the multi-striped example above are just too cute!

Turncuff Anklet

In the current warmer temperatures that most of us are experiencing right now a good turncuff anklet pair of socks like the ones above are a must have within my own wardrobe. And the best part is that through the website linked above you can purchase three pairs of any style for an affordable $15.00! Individually pairs are $6.00 so a multiple purchase will save you some $$$$.

Basic Anklets

Basic anklets like those pictured above come in different colour options such as white, black, navy, and red to coordinate, and compliment your outfit choices. These too are on for the same great bargain prices!

Have a look at Hue socks via the link, and shop with security, and comfort from the convenience of home. There are several more styles for you to check out on the website, too numerous for the scope of a single blog entry.

And with my own teen girls returning back to school shortly there is no better time to start stocking up! Pun intended .. ;)

It was a lovely weekend just past, here in Toronto. The city hosted several festivals including the ever popular "Beer Fest" at Fort York. I however did not partake in any of these fests, but instead spent the weekend indulging in one of my favourite pastimes...trolling the used book shops.

You might be amazed to learn of some of the rare, and vintage titles that can be found usually in excellent condition. These in turn can be sold off on eBay for a tidy profit, particularly first editions or if you are like me just added to an ever growing personal library.

Fluctuating Google Page Rank - A Question

Google Page Rank of any given site's page to the best of my limited knowledge is based (at least in part) directly on the number of higher ranking links towards that website or blog. Over the past 2-3 days I've noted that my PR on two of the five blogs total that belong to either hubby or myself are fluctuating. I have never seen this type of fluctuation before, and I'm curious if anyone else is experiencing the same? Is Google in the middle of a PR update?

Would love to hear from other webmasters on the subject.

In the mean time if you are running a blog I would highly recommend you insure you ping your blog through the Google Blog Search, and make sure you get listed on their directory.

Cheers!

It's All About The Eye Candy

Web art, and graphics are an important tool in giving your site some style! I love using photos, and graphics to juice up my own entries, and articles, and try to incorporate them whenever I can. Even my wee Pimp image above is easily recognizable, and therefore gives a strong branding to this blog.

Now if you are looking for the best graphics resource on the net then you have got to check out WebArtMonthly. They have oodles of images, including stock photos, icons, and clip art to choose from. And they update with new stuff monthly.

Go check them out! They do charge a nominal fee, but it's worth it if you are looking for a wide range of stunning graphics to choose from.

Cheers!

Wordless Wednesday - Dr. Care Toothpaste

You have probably never heard of Dr. Care Toothpaste. It was a Canadian product marketed towards children that failed miserably.

"Anybody with kids would know that you don't make an aerosol can of toothpaste and put it in the hands of kids."

--Robert McMath, the curator of the Failed Products Museum in Ithaca, New York.

Happy Wordless Wednesday! Thank you for stopping by!

Realistic Video Games - Not For Everyone

I was reading through an article on the BBC this morning entitled video games need realism boost, and I have got to admit it is a topic I have more than mixed feelings on. Here is a brief snippet from the article:

More than good looks are needed to make a great video game, according to Glenn Entis, chief technical officer at games giant Electronic Arts.

Mr Entis told the Siggraph conference that games makers had to use much more than graphics to make their creations believable, engaging and fun.

Game worlds must not just look lifelike, he said, they must also react in a realistic manner too.

Since many of the games on the market these days are ultra violent already do we really need games that are going to portray this violence in an even more realistic manner?

To be honest it does not really affect me as I will not play games that involve killing human beings, nor have I ever allowed the kids to play them either. It is one thing to play a game where a character is an obvious fantasy creation, it is another when the character could easily resemble your next door neighbour in my opinion.

At what point does the need for realism within a game cross the line to very bad taste?

Just some thoughts reading the article above produced in this still somewhat foggy Tuesday morning mind.

Cheers!

The Pillsbury Doughboy In London

Hailing the arrival of Pillsbury brand products in the United Kingdom, the Pillsbury Doughboy arrived in London with much fanfare.

Not certain how the British will take to Pillsbury products, but the Doughboy sure looks like he is having fun! When doesn't he though....

Cruel & Unusual Punishment

The BBC reports that police chiefs in the Thai capital, Bangkok, have come up with a new way of punishing officers who break the rules - an eye-catching Hello Kitty armband. Read on:

The armband is large, bright pink and has a Hello Kitty motif with two hearts embroidered on it.

From today, officers who are late, park in the wrong place or commit other minor transgressions will have to wear it for several days.

The armband is designed to shame the wearer, police officials said.

Wow! Talk about your cruel, and unusual punishments lol! This certainly is an innovative concept towards discipline.

Hello Kitty has become one of the world's most recognized brands. First introduced by Japanese company Sanrio in 1974 Hello Kitty can be seen on everything from lunch bags to hair ribbons, and now apparently certain police officer's uniforms.

New Rules To Govern Pay Day Loans

Canada has set up new rules to insure that borrowers have a complete listing of all fees, and charges associated with pay day loans.

Lenders who charge sky-high interest rates will now have to disclose them prior to lending the cash.

This is very good news for Canadian consumers of this type of financial product.

Camping Paris Hilton Style

It is called "Glamping," which is a combination of the two words camping, and glamour. Ans apparently glamping is all the rage right now, with companies designing products especially for the glamping crowd.

Read on:

Toronto - Pitching tents and roasting marshmallows over the fire isn't everyone's definition of a vacation. So, instead of roughing it, imagine martinis, gourmet food and silk sheets.

A new phenomenon called "glamping," or glamorous camping, is all about bringing the luxuries of home to the outdoors and companies are now rolling out fancy sheets, grills, refrigerators and cappuccinos to meet the trend.

Bob Matheson, the manager of Mountain Equipment Co-op on King Street, told 680News it may sound a little silly to those hard-core outdoors people, but times are changing.

"The days of sweating and working really hard in the outdoors are well behind us. As we get more comfortable, everyone gets into camping," he said.

Designer sheets, and coffee makers may be for some, but to me this just doesn't sound like camping. To each their own I guess ...

DeLorean To Make A Comeback

Ha! This should date me. The first time I ever heard of let alone saw a DeLorean car was in a theatre. Yep, I first saw one in the movie Back To The Future, and I haven't seen one since! According to the BBC demand for this car is fuelling a possible comeback. Here is a snippet:

Demand for DeLorean cars is so high that it may go back into production, according to a US firm.

The last of the vehicles - made famous in the film Back To The Future - rolled off the production line near Belfast 25 years ago.

However, the number of enthusiasts seeking the car has meant a limited number may be built in the US.

The company was based at Dunmurry. Almost £80m of public money was spent in the hope of creating 2,000 jobs.

More than £20m in legal fees was spent by the government in legal action against the auditors of the failed company, which collapsed in 1982.

Manufacture of the DeLorean DMC-12 car began at the Dunmurry plant in 1981, with fewer than 9,000 cars rolling off the production lines before its closure the following year.

Despite the firm's failure the car, with its unpainted stainless steel skin and gull-wing doors, gained a cult following.
