Loans - When Bad Credit Can Cost You A Job

Earlier this past week I was speaking with a girlfriend of mine who had interviewed with a large financial institution. She was definitely qualified for the position being offered, but due to her poor credit rating. I was rather shocked by this, and I do not know if this is applicable outside of Canada, but apparently you can be declined a job within the financial services industry if you have a bad credit history.

As my regular readers know, I too had a bad credit rating at one time. When my own finances improved I did borrow again through what is known as a secured loan. I was advised to do this through someone else who had gone through similar circumstances as a way to repair bad credit.

Loans as I have blogged about in the past are something we all require at one time or another. In fact we are currently in a position again where we will be in need of borrowing money towards the middle child's education (she starts University next year).

Even my mother who has been very frugal throughout her life is considering a remortgage or home improvement loan in order to fix up her house add in some new storm windows, and siding, which will work towards increasing her property value. And she is a senior. See you can't escape the need to borrow money at times.

However much we do need them, for most people I think that loans can be a scary proposition. I would be lying to you if I did not state that getting into debt again (which I know I'm going to be) makes me a wee bit nervous.

I do hope within this entry though that I have illustrated to you how a loan can actually be very beneficial in ways you may have not even considered before, such as repairing a bad credit history. And let's face it good credit can even mean the difference between getting a specific type of job or not something even I just learned of.

Cheers!

EMI Now YouTube Partner

EMI has signed a deal with YouTube that will allow its users to access videos by EMI artists. Read on:

It means all four of the world's major music firms are now YouTube partners.

The terms of the agreement should eventually allow users to incorporate recordings by EMI artists into their own projects.

The deal follows a string of lawsuits by companies who accuse YouTube of allowing its users to pirate their copyrighted works.

The biggest threat comes from entertainment giant Viacom Media which is suing YouTube for $1bn (£505m).

The US group - which owns MTV and Nickelodeon - claims that the website uses its shows illegally.

Sounds like a win-win situation for EMI, Google, YouTube, and YouTube users! I would also think that this will be good for EMI artists as well!

Good News For Canadian Shoppers!

According to a radio report I was listening to this morning, the province of Ontario has decided to ban all expiry dates on gift cards, and gift certificates. And I say about time!

This has happened to me personally a few times. I've been given a gift card, and by the time I decide to use it it has expired. It's like finding a twenty dollar bill in your pocket of a pair of pants you haven't worn in two years, and being told ooops you can't spend that one!

Good for the province! They've also stated that companies must clearly identify any other limitations a gift certificate may have.

China to crack down on unsafe products

The following is welcomed news after the horror of the pet deaths attributed to Menu pet foods usage of Chinese ingredients. Read on:

China has announced plans to introduce a safety recall system in an attempt to weed out unsafe products being manufactured within the country.

Wu Jianping, director general of the administration's food production and supervision department, said the system will focus on "potentially dangerous and unapproved food products," according to the state-run China Daily newspaper.

China's food and drug safety record has come under scrutiny in recent months as tests on the country's exports have detected the presence of potentially harmful ingredients

Tests have indicated that wheat flour, used in North American pet food, was tainted with melamine — a chemical used to make plastics and fertilizer. Toothpaste, exported from China to the Dominican Republic, Panama and Australia, was found to contain diethylene glycol, a chemical used in antifreeze and brake fluid.

Last week, Canada's food watchdog intercepted a shipment of corn gluten imported from China that tested positive for melamine. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency is continuing to check shipments of wheat, rice, soy and corn gluten and protein concentrates coming into the country from China.

Full CBC Article Here

Last week I blogged about a US crackdown on Chinese products, including toothpastes, and soaps. Personally I will still be very cautious about purchasing any items from China, and will probably remain so for a long time yet.

Bees In The Plane

Well..ok...they weren't really in the plane...just read on:

Almost 200 passengers found themselves stranded at Bournemouth Airport for 11 hours after their plane turned back after flying into a swarm of bees.

The Palmair Boeing 737, bound for Faro in Portugal, took off from Bournemouth at 0810 BST on Thursday.

But after flying into the swarm the pilot experienced an engine surge an hour later and returned the aircraft to the UK for checks.

Engineers ruled it was unsafe to fly and another plane took off at 1915 BST.

Well that's just creepy! I realise to the majority this was just an inconvenience...but eeeek!!!! I actually have a terrible phobia when it comes to these wee beasties! I know they make honey, and pollinate the flowers, and all that other good stuff, but they still scare the heck out of me! Just looking at the image above makes me shudder!

And on that note, have a very happy weekend! I'll try to post up some goodies, but I'll be checking out a few local sales, and will definitely let you all know how that went on Monday.

American Vet Fired For Sexy Chat

Wow! Talk about having some mixed feelings on this one! A man in the US is suing IBM for $5m (£2.5m) in a wrongful dismissal case after he was fired for visiting adult internet chat rooms while at work. Read on:

James Pacenza, 58, says he was addicted to online chat rooms and that IBM should have offered him sympathy and treatment instead of firing him.

The Vietnam War veteran says he has suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder since 1969.

He argues that he used the internet to control his psychological problems.

Full BBC Article Here

While the larger part of my mind says IBM acted appropriately, I still have to wonder if they should not have been more supportive to Mr. Pacenza. Perhaps they should have tried to get him some counselling or help for his problems first, and see how that went instead of just turfing the guy. Then again, the man served his country should it not be the responsibility then of the US government and military to help him???? See what I mean, it not that easy discerning what should or should not have been done.

Killer banana gossip spreads in China

I couldn't make this stuff up, but apparently somebody did. Read on:

A rumour spread by text message has badly hit the price of bananas from China's Hainan island, state media say.

The messages claim the fruit contains viruses similar to Sars, the severe respiratory illness which has killed hundreds of people worldwide.

Producers in Hainan say the resulting price slump is costing them up to 20 million yuan ($US2.6m) a day.

China's Agriculture Ministry has dismissed the Sars claim as baseless. Police are investigating its source.

"It is utterly a rumour," a Chinese Health Ministry official was quoted as saying by Xinhua news agency.

"There has not been a case in the world in which humans have contracted a plant virus, and there is not any scientific evidence."

Full BBC Article Here

Wow! China really didn't need this one, considering the very real concern over Chinese products in the western marketplace that is ongoing.

This just goes to show you the power of word to mouth or in this case text messaging of silly gossip that has had an actual impact on a product in this case quite negatively.

Wireless Tracking Devices

Wireless tracking systems could be used to protect patients in hospitals and students on campuses, backers of the technology said. Read on:

The combination of Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tags and wi-fi allows real-time tracking of objects or people inside a wireless network.

Angelo Lamme, from Motorola, said tracking students on a campus could help during a fire or an emergency.

"You would know where your people are at any given moment," he said.

Marcus Birkl, head of wireless at Siemens, said location tracking of assets or people was one of the biggest incentives for companies, hospitals and education institutions to roll out wi-fi networks.

Both firms were at The Wireless Event, in London, this week selling new products in the area of so-called real-time location services.

Siemens is pushing a complete system, developed with Finnish firm Ekahau, which can track objects or people.

Full BBC Article Here

My initial reaction to this was what a brilliant idea! Last winter alone three people suffering various mentally disabling ailments died as a result of wandering away from caregivers, and being exposed to the harsh elements. It was very tragic, and had they been located rapidly would have certainly survived.

BUT....

I also worry about the potential of abuse with this sort of thing. That in itself makes the prospect of tracking devices on humans well kind of scary.

What are your thoughts?

The Word On Pay Per Post Direct

PPP Direct is the latest innovation from one of my fave companies on the planet - Pay Per Post!

PPP Direct allows advertisers to hire bloggers
as the apt name implies directly, based on their own needs, and allows for both bloggers, and advertisers to haggle over details such as payment, length of post, required media such as banners, photos etc, number of links, and anchored text etc. These negotiations take place all from the safety of the Pay Per Post website.

You maybe wondering what Pay Per Post requires for this service? They will be charging a minimal 10% fee. I say minimal because if you compare the Pay Per Post services to that of it's competitors like Review Me, which has been doing something very similar for quite sometime you will note that they charge far more. In fact the PPP competitors are charging up to a 50-100% markup translating into bloggers earning far less for their time, and space.

With PPP Direct bloggers have the freedom to charge what they feel is worth their talents as a writer, and their ability to give exposure to an advertiser while keeping a much greater portion of the money.

Over the course of this weekend I will be setting this blog up on PPP Direct, and trying it out. I'll let you all know how it works out in future blog entries. Watch for the PPP Direct badge on the sidebar in the next couple of days.

Over all I am very excited about this new PPP feature, and look forward to a bright future as a continuing Pay Per Post Postie!

The War On Spam

The war on spam is heating up with the introduction of The DomainKeys Identified Mail (DKIM) system. Read on:

A tool that could help in the battle against spam and phishing attacks has received industry approval.

The DomainKeys Identified Mail (DKIM) system is a method of validating the identity of the sender of an e-mail.

Spammers hide their identity by using a false, or spoofed, address in the millions of messages they send out.

DKIM uses encrypted digital signatures to prove a message's origin and a draft standard has been accepted by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF).

The IETF is the umbrella group representing firms such as Yahoo, Cisco, Sendmail and PGP Corporation.

The firms have pledged to work with ISPs, businesses and financial institutions to roll out the technology as soon as possible.

Protecting e-mail users from scams was a top priority, said Mark Delany, lead architect for Yahoo Mail and author of DomainKeys.

"DomainKeys Identified Mail is positioned to become the pre-eminent standard for e-mail authentication," he said.

Full BBC Article Here

Hmmmm....while this is definitely welcomed, I do wonder how long it will take to implement world over? Also how much havoc will it wreak initially when genuine emails are certain to go astray? Still it must be done as world governments have dropped the ball on legislating anti-spam laws with any teeth to them in my opinion, where they exist at all. And as long as people keep clicking on the unsolicited links found in their inboxes. After all if only one person out of a 100 makes a purchase this way it is worth it to the spammer to just keep on spamming.

Possible Toxins In Toothpaste From China

Possible Toxins In Toothpaste From China

Health officials in the United States say they are checking all shipments of toothpaste imported from China for contamination with toxic chemicals. Read on:

Panama and the Dominican Republic have reported finding diethylene glycol, a chemical used in engine coolants, in toothpaste from China.

The toothpaste scare is the latest involving products from China.

Earlier this year, contaminated pet food ingredients killed a number of cats and dogs in North America.

The toxic chemical, melamine, was found in wheat gluten exports from China for use in pet food, prompting a recall of at least 100 pet food brands.

The tainted wheat gluten was even thought to have made its way into livestock feed.

Full BBC Article Here

What are your thoughts on this latest scare? I for one will not purchase foods, cosmetics, soaps etc that originate in China at this point. And something to consider for my American readers: Did you know China is the second largest exporter of toothpaste to the US after Canada? You may just want to check where the toothpaste you purchased originated from.

Masterfoods Reverses Decision On Chocolate Bars

Mars has abandoned plans to use animal products in its chocolate, and has apologised to "upset" vegetarians. Read On:

The firm had said it would change the whey used in some of its products from a vegetarian source to one with traces of the animal enzyme, rennet.

The Vegetarian Society organised a campaign against the move, asking members to voice their concerns to parent company Masterfoods.

Mars said it became "very clear, very quickly" that it had made a mistake.

In just one week, more than 6,000 people bombarded the company, which produces the Mars, Snickers, Maltesers and Galaxy brands, with phone and e-mail complaints.

Forty MPs also signed a petition to voice their opposition.

Fiona Dawson, managing director of Mars UK, said the company had listened to customers and decided to reverse its decision.

"The consumer is our boss and we had lots of feedback from consumers who were unhappy about the change," Ms Dawson said.

"It became very clear, very quickly that we had made a mistake, for which I am sorry.

Food Allergy Week

All this past week was Food Allergy Week, and if you are interested in the subject please follow through on the link for some good articles on the topic.

It's a bit ironic for me, as the reason you didn't see me posting here yesterday is I was suffering from a food allergy. And it sucks!!!!

I LOVE shrimp, but apparently it does not love me back...over the years I've developed an intolerance to it. Yesterday I indulged in my fave Thai dish, and yes it had wee bits of shrimp in it, and within the hour I was in agony. I'll spare you the gruesome details, but they involve many trips to the bathroom, a pounding headache, along with a nasty case of hives. Not fun at all!

While my symptoms are merely painful, and annoying there are many people that suffer potentially life threatening food allergies. And in the case of children it really makes me sad, not just for them, but for the anxiety this must cause their parents. I know many products now say "nut" free, or made in a "nut free environment" etc, but if it was my child I know I would be uber paranoid.

The ex has a friend whose teenage daughter died because she ate French Fries that had been cooked in peanut oil. The poor kid according to friends had even asked the counter person at the fast food joint if they were, and was told no. She was 14 years old. Tragic...

The Finance Forums

Earlier this morning I was surfing around The Finance Forums, which if you are not already familiar with, and posting to read on! This series of forums that are devoted to everything financial should be of interest to the majority of Nuttin' But Pimp readers, including your blog hostess.

The forums cover a wide range of financial, and generalised topics including a meet & greet for newbies, and general chat area. More specialised areas of discussions cover subjects such as pensions, investments, loans, credit cards, and more.

There is also some good user to user info on scams, something that seems to be quite prevalent on the internet. I know I've run into quite a few, and it is good to have a place to discuss these with others.

While surfing around The Finance Forums I also noted that they are fairly frequently posted to, many of the threads listed were from today, so the information, and topics being discussed for the most part are current. According to the site there are over one thousand registered users. How many of these people participate regularly I'm not certain, but again the forums appear to be quite active.

Now speaking of registering, the sign up if absolutely free, and there is no cost or obligation to the end user to participate.

Over all in my opinion The Finance Forums are at the very least worth checking out for those interested in discussion of these topics. Go have a look for yourself. I'm adding them as a link to my sidebar for my own easy reference, and because I do believe they are a good resource for readers of this blog.

MySpace Won't Give Up The Names Of Sex Offenders

A rather disturbing bit of news from CNN today. My thoughts on this snippet are below. Read on:

RALEIGH, North Carolina (AP) -- Citing federal privacy law, MySpace.com said Tuesday it won't comply with a request by attorneys general from eight states to hand over the names of registered sex offenders who use the social networking Web site.

MySpace's chief security officer said the company regularly discloses information to law enforcement officials but the federal Electronic Communications Privacy Act says it can only do so when proper legal processes are followed.

"We're truly disheartened that the AGs chose to send out a letter ... when there was an existing legal process that could have been followed," the security officer, Hemanshu Nigam, said in an interview.

In a letter Monday, attorneys general from North Carolina, Connecticut, Georgia, Idaho, Mississippi, New Hampshire, Ohio and Pennsylvania asked MySpace to provide information about registered sex offenders using the site and where they live.

Connecticut Attorney General Richard Blumenthal on Tuesday blasted MySpace for refusing to share the information and said no subpoena is needed for MySpace to tell the attorneys general how many registered sex offenders use the site "or other information relating to possible parole violations."

"I am deeply disappointed and troubled by this unreasonable and unfounded rejection of our request for critical information about convicted sex offenders whose profiles are on MySpace," Blumenthal said. "By refusing this information, MySpace is precluding effective enforcement of parole and probation restrictions that safeguard society."

Full CNN Article Here

Ok. I admit the knowledge that perhaps thousands of sex, and other types of offenders might be MySpace members is disturbing! However, is it the registered offenders that we should be worried about or the ones lurking out there that haven't been caught yet more the danger I ask? Not to mention what about the ones who set up alias profiles????

I'm not a MySpace user, nor do I allow the kid to have a MySpace profile either. I monitor everything she does online, and I mean EVERYTHING. Her computer is approx. 7ft from my own, and it is off when I cannot monitor it. Prevention is key in my opinion, and keeping children off of social networking sites, and applying common sense as an adult is the only way to keep society, and ourselves safe from these types of people.

Vista Sales Are Hot

According to a recent BBC report sales of Microsoft's newest operating system are brisk. In fact sales of Vista have been much hotter than anticipated. Read on:

Microsoft has sold nearly 40 million copies of Vista, its new operating system replacing Windows XP.

According to chairman Bill Gates, sales had been quicker than Microsoft had expected. Windows is used on more than 90% of the world's personal computers.

Vista has been on sale to consumers since 30 January, and there had been concerns that take up might be slow, hurting profits.

"I'm really thrilled at how this has come together," Mr Gates said.

Speaking at a company conference in Los Angeles, he added that one of the reasons for the strong sales was that many consumers were looking to increase the amount of digital media they used, a central feature of the Vista package.

Full BBC Article Here

Heheh! And here I am just having switched from Windows 98 to XP only a mere few months back. I'm in no hurry to change over to Vista just yet. Particularly since I've been hearing some not so flattering feedback in regards to it in the techie forums. What are your thoughts? Are you currently using Vista? If so, is it all that it's cracked up to be?

Straight Up Talk On Secured Loans

It was my pleasure to review a company website this morning that specialises in bad credit secured loans.

Advancestart.com is a one stop online resource where UK residents, can fill out an easy to use application form, and received quotes, on a Secured Loan, including, but not limited to Secured Home Loans.

These types of loans are a good option for those who may have faced financial difficulty in the past, or have not yet established a credit rating, and credit history.

I found Advancestart.com to be well laid out, and easy to use. I would recommend this site to UK residents as a good Secured Loans UK resource from which to make applications, and receive quotes for comparison purposes.

Buyer finds mummy in Spanish flat

File this under weird! I've heard of former tenants, or home owners leaving stuff behind, but this is ... well... Read on:

A man in north-eastern Spain has made an unexpected discovery after buying a new home without seeing it first.

Inside he found the mummified body of the previous owner.

Jordi Giro bought the flat in the Costa Brava resort of Rosas at an auction after the previous owner defaulted on her payments.

He told police that he was shocked on going into the flat for the first time to discover her body sitting on the sofa.

It seems that Maria Luisa Zamora failed to keep up payments on her mortgage because she had in fact died in 2001.

Full BBC Article Here

Ultimately the really sad thing about the above story is that this woman died alone, and not a single person bothered to check on her. I mean how does something like that happen? How is it that no one bothered to look into the condition of the flat prior to it going up for auction? Very weird, and yes, very sad too....

Cingular Wireless To Become AT&T

The latest juicy news to come out of the cell phone industry is that AT&T will be rebranding Cingular Wireless to the new AT&T Wireless. This is not exactly a big surprise considering the 2004 merger between AT&T Wireless and cell phone giant Cingular. And it is anticipated that the AT&T name will completely replace the Cingular moniker by June of this year.

It is an interesting strategy, and we'll see how it pans out for the new AT&T Wireless. I do have a few thoughts on this rebranding of the Cingular name, and I'll share these with you from the point of view of a consumer. And lets face it when it comes to what really matters in business, the bottom line so to speak, is the consumer's thoughts, and opinions on any given product or service, and their reaction to any business decisions made.

Firstly, the main point of interest in my opinion is the quality of the Cingular/AT&T cell phones, and cell phone services. Period. Bottom line, as I've said above. I am interested in getting the best value for my money, no matter what they decide to call their company and/or services.

However, in this case they are simply coming up with an alien, or unknown name. AT&T Wireless has already been around prior to the merger, and has not been gone for very long at all. The AT&T name itself has been known to consumers for over a century now, 125 years I believe to be exact so brand name recognition will already be in place.

The recent mergers that have led to this rebranding should also prove to be a good thing for the consumers in the long run as newer technologies are developed, and emerge onto the market.

Again we'll have to wait, and watch as it unfolds, but my gut tells me this rebranding will not hurt or impact negatively on the business, nor the consumers.

The Vertical Workstation

In an effort to help people get slim while at the office, scientists have developed a workstation/treadmill. More from the BBC:

Obesity experts have developed a vertical workstation which helps employees take exercise and shed weight as they work.

The designers, the Mayo Clinic in New York, said it could help obese people to lose up to 30kg a year.

Fifteen obese volunteers burned an average of 191 calories an hour using the treadmill, compared to 72 calories just sitting at their desk.

The study features in the British Journal of Sports Medicine.

Full BBC Article Here

While I applaud any effort made to promote healthier lifestyle choices, I'm not too certain that this vertical workstation will be the wave of the future, nor do I believe we'll be seeing them in every other office anytime soon. But yeah, I've been wrong about cetain products, and services before. Is this something you'd like to see in your own office? Would you use it?

Footballers win sex toy lawsuit

Ummmm, wow, where to begin with this one??? How about with a snippet from the full BBC article on this particular story. Please read on:

A German sex toy firm is to pay German football stars Michael Ballack and Oliver Kahn 50,000 euros each after it used their names to sell vibrators.

The stars sued the firm Beate Uhse because it sold special World Cup vibrators called "Michael B" and "Olli K" last year without their permission.

The damages - £34,000 ($67,000) for each player - were awarded in Hamburg.

Ballack is a Chelsea midfielder, while Kahn is the Bayern Munich goalkeeper.

The footballers had originally demanded 60,000 euros each in damages.

Full BBC Article Here

I'm not really certain whether or not Michael, and Olli should be flattered or embarrassed. Certainly I agree that no company should be using anyone's names to endorse their products or services without consent. Particularly, this type of a product! Therefore, I'm glad the footballers won their lawsuit, but again, one is left to wonder if secretly they may have been well just a bit flattered by it all...guess that might also depend on the product itself!

Hot New Film - Bug Starring Ashley Judd

Bug is a hot new film starring the very hot Ashley Judd, and Lionsgate Films is set to release this thriller next week! Check out the promo poster above! I'm getting chills just looking at it! And what about this one below?????

Vegetarians Take Note!

If you are a chocolate loving vegetarians or vegan then I have some bad news for you. According to the BBC, Masterfoods the makers of Mars, Snickers, and Twix candy bars have now started adding animal products to their chocolates. Read on:

Some of the UK's best-selling chocolate bars, such as Mars and Twix, will no longer be suitable for vegetarians.

Also affecting brands such as Snickers and Maltesers, owner Masterfoods said it had started to use animal product rennet to make its chocolate products.

Masterfoods said the change was due to it switching the sourcing of its ingredients and the admission was a "principled decision" on its part.

The Vegetarian Society said the company's move was "incomprehensible".

Full BBC Article Here

I do understand that this will be a disappointment to many. However, I also must give credit to Masterfoods for giving the public a heads up so to speak on their decision to use animal products. This gives people the option as consumers whether or not they will continue to buy the candy bars manufactured after May 1st when the new ingredient was added.

Credit Card 101 - Online Purchases

Credit Cards, everybody has either got one, or has some experience with them. I used to have several Credit Cards, but due to some prior trouble with them, overspending, combined with job loss, I now only utilise one.

I primarily use my Credit Card for online shopping, and purchases. I like the convenience that is afforded to me by shopping through the internet, and the handiness of utilising my credit card. In fact I most recently used it to send a bouquet of flowers to my Mother for Mother's Day.

Credit Cards do not have to be a bad thing at all in my opinion provided you put some controls in place regarding the amount you are spending, and insure you are using the right card for you.

AirAid.co.uk is a Credit Card UK resource website that assists UK consumers in doing just that, finding the right credit card for their purposes, and financial circumstances. TB Cases Rising In Britain and North America

According to a BBC article cases of TB are on the rise. However, a dose of vitamin D may help ward off tuberculosis, research suggests. Read on:

A study of 131 people found the vitamin helped to boost the ability of the body to inhibit the growth of bacteria that causes the respiratory disease.

Researchers from Queen Mary's School of Medicine and Imperial College said it could be used to target at-risk patients or added to drinks.

The study appeared in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine.

Vitamin D was originally used to treat TB in sanatoriums before antibiotics came in to use.

Ebay Auction of General Lee A Fizzle

According to CNN the bidder missed the payment deadline, leaving the proposed sale of the "General Lee" a 1969 Charger owned by actor John Schneider in serious doubt. Take note "Chargerguy" you still might have a shot at it!

Apparently the bidder claims his account was hacked, and he did not make a $10 million dollar bid on the car made famous by the tv show Dukes Of Hazzard. Did anyone actually watch that show???? I digress.... Here is a snippet from the CNN article:

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- After commanding a winning bid last week of nearly $10 million, the online auction of a 1969 Charger, owned by one of the stars of the "Dukes of Hazzard" television show, has blown a gasket.

The winning bidder, William Fisher, maintained that someone else placed the bids in his name after gaining access to his eBay account.

"Of course I have no plans to pay, because I didn't place the bid," an individual claiming to be Fisher wrote Thursday in an e-mail to CNNMoney.com. "I just want this to all blow over, which I'm sure it will."

John Schneider, who played Bo Duke in the series and owns the car - called the General Lee on the show - told CNNMoney.com he had been in contact with Fisher and was aware of his claims.

An EBay spokeswoman said there was no evidence that Fisher's account had been hacked.

During the course of the auction last week, eBay officials disqualified several bids and went so far as to contact several of the top bidders to verify their offers, an eBay spokeswoman had said earlier.

A winning bid on eBay constitutes a legally binding contract, according to a company spokesperson, although company policy allows Schneider to approach the second-highest bidder about purchasing the vehicle.

Schneider told CNNMoney.com Thursday afternoon he is considering putting his car back up for sale on eBay, but said this time bidders would be carefully pre-screened by an outside firm before the bidding started.

The vehicle is a modified Charger that appeared as the General Lee in the TV show.

Full CNN Article Here

Will be interesting to see how Ebay will handle this one. Best wishes to John on the sale of his car. I'm certain it will find a nice home with a collector somewhere.

Beware Booby-Trapped Websites

I was reading the following article on "booby-trapped" websites that come up in Google searches, and to be honest it's got me a bit unnerved. Sure I run anti-virus software, and have a firewall, but it is still kinda scary to know that there is so much malicious code out there! Read on:

One in 10 web pages scrutinised by search giant Google contained malicious code that could infect a user's PC.

Researchers from the firm surveyed billions of sites, subjecting 4.5 million pages to "in-depth analysis".

About 450,000 were capable of launching so-called "drive-by downloads", sites that install malicious code, such as spyware, without a user's knowledge.

A further 700,000 pages were thought to contain code that could compromise a user's computer, the team report.

To address the problem, the researchers say the company has "started an effort to identify all web pages on the internet that could be malicious".

Full BBC Article Here

Like I said above it is kind of scary to think about the hassle, and damage that could occur by merely clicking on one of these sites. Thank goodness that Google is taking the initiative to deal with this problem.

Shopping For A Hot New Phone

I think it is time, yep ... time I started seriously looking at upgrading to a hot new cell phone...and there are just so many to choose from!

My old Nokia has served it's purpose, it's very basic with none of the hot new features available in cell phones today. It's big, and clunky, and the keypad is just about worn out. So yeah, it time, and for once I think I'm going to spoil myself a little rotten! Ha!

Check out this free blue RAZR I was looking at. It's got all the latest features that will make my techie heart sing, and hey, blue just happens to be my all time favourite colour! In fact I've noted that RAZR tends to come in just about every colour imaginable...it's the fashion rage to have phones come in fun colours!

I know that my daughter would just love this hot Motorola Magenta RAZR v3 with myFaves! It's sleek, with all the right features, and she would adore the colour!

Anyway, enough about the kid, and back to me .. :) Like I said my next cell phone will be a long overdue treat to myself! While I really, really like the blue RAZR linked above, I think I'm going to check out a few more hot RAZR phones on the Wirefly site before making a firm decision. They've also got many other brands, and different carriers to choose from.

Come phone shopping with me!

Speaking of Mother's Day Gifts

What??? You might be wondering is your blog pimpin' hostess going to be giving her Mom this year???

I'll be giving my Mother a large bouquet of her favourite fresh cut flowers, and one of those "Chicken Soup For The Soul" books she loves so much.

The reasoning behind the flowers is that upon my Dad's death in 1999 we received a ton of them, so many in fact that we were a bit overwhelmed! I overheard my Mom say at the funeral parlour how it was too bad that Alec (my Dad) could not have seen this ... and it struck a chord within me.

Now every year my Mom gets flowers for a variety of different occasions along with something else she'd like ... I want her to see those flowers.

While I'm still doing that, Pay Per Post has given me the ability to stay home for the time being with our 11 year old daughter. Something I was unable to do throughout most of her life, and I am truly grateful for it!

Secondly, the Opps are a lot of FUN! I enjoy visiting the advertisers websites, writing about them, and introducing their products to you gentle readers. So far it's been a blast!!!

I've also made a few friends along the way like Tricia who shares my hometown, and Mr. Fab! And learned a lot about online marketing, blogging in general, page ranks, and much more a long the way. I hope to continue learning, and growing as a blogger through the lessons I've learned as a PPP postie.

From a sales, and marketing point of view I would tell the advertisers that viral marketing through Pay Per Post is hot!!!! What better way to spread brand recognition throughout the blogshere, and online world, which I as a consumer have become dependant on for all my purchasing needs...and I'm not alone!

Finally, I want to say a very BIG THANK YOU to Pay Per Post for allowing me to be a part of their postie team! I wish them continued success, and hope to be with them for a very long time!

Cheers!

Google Has Updated Page Rank!

I believe the long awaited page rank updates by Google have occurred. The last time these were updated was January 25th 2007.

Both of our newer blogs did very well.

Pastyme with Good Companye is now listed as PR 3

My Life in the Urban Zoo is now listed as PR 4

Not bad considering these both were started in February, so they are still very young as far as blogs go.

I'm very proud of both, as I've worked hard on them! If you have a chance stop by, and check them out .. :)

Hot Tip On Bookkeeping Services

In today's business world a lot of the traditional, and more tedious chores are outsourced, which can be very cost effective.

Consider the services offered by Accountingparadise.com such as bookkeeping, payroll, payroll pricing, and accounting, and then compare their prices.

This company was literally born out of the frustration of trying to find a good bookkeeper, and reasonable, and affordable prices. And within a short two years not only have they grown, but have established a solid reputation amongst their clientèle.

It was my pleasure to review their website, and do recommend you have a look at what they can offer you. And right now they are offering a fabulous discount for people who need to purchase Quickbooks!

The Word On ProfessionalBusinessCards.com

It was my pleasure to visit the ProfessionalBusinessCards.com website earlier today, and take this opportunity to introduce them to you gentle readers.

If you are in need of high quality, professional business cards they are worth checking out. The main points that I would look at as a consumer are covered, good price, for good value. They have standard designs, plus you can create your own look as well, another plus!

My only bit of constructive criticism for them has nothing to do with their products or service, but with the website's main page, which I found a bit too busy for my taste. The volume of designs shown right up front can be a bit overwhelming. They could show a handful of examples, and I would be more inclined to click on the category anyway.

Again that is a personal preference in web design, and does not reflect on the product or service, nor would it be a deciding factor in whether or not I chose to purchase from them.

Cheers!

Wordless Wednesday - USB Piggy Angel Fan

USB Piggy Angel Fan - Get this USB Piggy Fan to decorate your working desk and enjoy the coolness penetrating your heart.....

Ummm ... no thank you! This piggy, angel, palm tree, fanamabobber reminds me of the type of Christmas gift you get from your Great Aunt Agnes. You know, that sweet, kindly relative, that apparently doesn't know any better, but you would never want to hurt their feelings so you hide their gift in a back closet, until they visit again. I don't know about you, but I've seen similar stuff at many a garage sale ... :)

Overcoming An Addiction

Throughout my forty years on this planet I've managed to escape becoming addicted to most things ... with one major exception...smoking cigarettes. I have off, and on battled with this addiction for the better part of twenty some odd years now, and thankfully this has been an on year. By on I mean I'm geared to quit again, hopefully this time for good. Not only is it destructive to my health, but very costly as well.

This time it will be different, this time I intend to seek help with quitting smoking. There is never any shame in seeking help with an addiction.

My father suffered through alcoholism for a good portion of his adult life. He finally ought help through a drug rehab, which assisted him in staying clean, and sober through the last years of his own life. Something that he was very proud of.

I won't lie to you, I was with him throughout many of his ordeals, and it was not easy. However, in the end with professional guidance, and help he won, he beat his demons. This gives me the strength to know that I can beat my own tobacco demon once, and for all.

If you think you might have a problem, or know of someone who does with a drug or alcohol dependancy then please visit The Watershed Treatment Programs website by clicking on the link I've provided for you. They have a 24 hour toll-free helpline, and are considered leaders in the field of substance abuse treatment.

Another YouTube Lawsuit

Another lawsuit has been launched against video sharing service YouTube. YouTube, which has denied copyright infringement is now being sued by the English Premier League, a UK football organisation. Read on:

The football organisation said YouTube had "knowingly misappropriated" its intellectual property by encouraging footage to be viewed on its site.

Google-owned YouTube already faces a $1bn (£501m) lawsuit from media giant Viacom, accusing it of illegally showing clips from its TV shows.

YouTube has denied those claims, saying the suit threatens the internet.

Full BBC Article Here

What are your thoughts on this? Do you agree with Google's statement that these lawsuits threaten social networking, and perhaps endanger the very purpose of the internet itself? Or do you side with the copyright owners? My own feelings are mixed at the moment...

The Importance Of Becoming A US Citizen

There are many very good reasons why different people wish to obtain their United States citizenship. Some of these reasons include the following:

1. The right to vote and obtain certain federal jobs
2. Security from anti-immigrant laws
3. Security from removal
4. The right to live or take long trips outside the United States
5. Special rights and protections when travelling outside the United States
6. An unquestioned right to return to the United States
7. The ability to bring other family members to the United States (faster than you could as a permanent resident)
8. The right to apply for public benefits
9. Cost savings in renewing Green card every 10 years (in fees and time)
10. Pass Citizenship to your children

There are other more personal reasons as well, including the feeling of knowing you belong to the country you have made your home. I know of this deep emotional desire through my relatives that are first generation American, and the joy, and pride they felt at becoming citizens.

The road to citizenship is not always an easy one, and can be confusing at times for those seeking it.

Right now the news is filled with immigration issues, that can be scary, and who knows what laws may end up being affected or muddying the process.

Right now you can Apply for US Citizenship Online through a service that will assist you in making the process understandable, and much easier to go through. They will also save you a lot of headaches, and money on lawyers fees.

Make your dream of being a US citizen a reality by clicking on the link above. It is that easy, and definitely worthwhile!

Hello Kitty multibillion-dollar global enterprise

Japanese nail artist Yoko Matsuda shows Hello Kitty nails at a Tokyo beauty show.

Just another incarnation of the Hello Kitty phenomenon! If you think that this cutesy cartoon character is the domain of "wee" ones only or a passing fad I highly recommend you read the book Hello Kitty: The Remarkable Story of Sanrio and the Billion Dollar Feline Phenomenon, which tells the story of how the Japanese company Sanrio bucked the odds and transformed a "bulbous, all-but-featureless cartoon critter" into a multibillion-dollar global business!

Excellent reading and gives some terrific insight into branding, marketing, and licensing in order to capture the imagination, and loyalty of shoppers.

In my own neighbourhood you'd be hard pressed not to see some Hello Kitty product either in a store display or worn in the form of clothing, handbags, backpacks etc on a daily basis. Why I definitely go interested in the book, and the story behind the story so to speak.

Security Tip For Those Earning Money Online

Since I had the opportunity of blogging a bit about security online in my last entry I thought I would mention this very important tip that was passed along to me. Since many of us who are earning money online utilise Paypal it is VERY IMPORTANT to NEVER USE the same email, and password that we use in other online activities like chat rooms or forums. These can be hacked, and if a hacker gets a hold of your password, and email outside of Paypal they can then use that information. Just a security tip that I follow, and wanted to pass along to my peeps!

The Word On RemotePC - PC Remote Access

Remote Access of your Windows PC has become imperative in these days of business on the go. Trust me, with setting up my own home-based business, and the day to day running of the charitable group I helped to co-found it has become an absolute necessity to be able to remotely access my home computer's data like my e-mail, spreadsheets, databases, contacts etc when I am on the go, and away from my home office, which has become more frequent over the last few months.

RemotePC - Remote Access can give me the ability to do just that in an absolute secure environment. In fact one of the features that really impressed me is that two levels of authentication are required, which gives me peace of mind because I am very security minded.

They are also reasonably priced with plans starting out at just $4.95 per month. And you can try them out for your first 30 days free!

Is It Too Easy To Borrow Money?

This was a question I was asked, and I'd like to take a few minutes to respond to it here on the blog.

My very first experience with loans is going back quite a long time ago to my early twenties, and it was a car loan. At the time both my ex, and I were ok off financially, and this particular unsecured loan was relatively easy to obtain. To be honest with you had our financial circumstances been different at the time, or had the loan been for a different purpose I do not believe it would have been approved. Therefore, I do believe that any reputable lender will insure beforehand the reasonable ability of a prospective borrower to pay back a loan.

That is just my opinion though. Perhaps you've had a different experience, and if so I would like to hear your thoughts.

Later in life I had to obtain a bad credit loan you'd call it when I got into some credit card trouble. I've blogged a bit about that in the past, and that particularly scary time in my financial history.

The loan, which was used to consolidate debt was also not too difficult to obtain, possibly because my family had been dealing with the same lender for many years, and my financial prospects were starting to look up at the time. This loan, I can tell you, took a huge weight off of my shoulders!

If I had that magical do-over that I think we all wish we had, on the topic of borrowing money I would definitely have done some research, and comparison shopping for better rates. It's the interest that can really become a burden when it comes to taking out a loan.

Cheers!

Talk About Being Taken To The Cleaners

I began reading the following news story about a judge who is suing a couple for the loss of his fave pants (yes I said pants!), and thought to myself what a waste of court time. I then read that he is seeking a whopping $65 million in damages!!!! And never mind a waste of time, more like down right ridiculous! From a judge yet! Read on:

WASHINGTON (AP) -- A missing pair of pants has led to one big suit.

A customer got so steamed when a dry cleaner lost his trousers that he sued for $65 million. Two years later, he is still pressing his suit.

The case has demoralized the South Korean immigrant owners of the mom-and-pop business and brought demands that the customer -- an administrative law judge in Washington -- be disbarred and removed from office for pursuing a frivolous and abusive claim.

Jin Nam Chung, Ki Chung and their son, Soo Chung, are considering moving back to Seoul, seven years after they opened their dry-cleaning business in the nation's capital, said their lawyer, Chris Manning.

"They're out a lot of money, but more importantly, incredibly disenchanted with the system," Manning said. "This has destroyed their lives."

The customer, Roy L. Pearson Jr., who has been representing himself, declined to comment.

According to court documents, the problem began in May 2005 when Pearson became a judge and brought several suits for alterations to Custom Cleaners in Washington. A pair of pants from one suit was missing when he requested it two days later.

Pearson asked the cleaners for the full price of the suit: more than $1,000.

But a week later, the Chungs said the pants had been found and refused to pay. Pearson said those were not his pants, and decided to take the Chungs to the cleaners and sue.

Manning said the cleaners have made three settlement offers to Pearson: $3,000, then $4,600, then $12,000.

But Pearson was not satisfied and expanded his calculations beyond one pair of pants. Because Pearson no longer wanted to use his neighborhood dry cleaner, he asked in his lawsuit for $15,000 -- the cost of renting a car every weekend for 10 years to go to another business.

Full CNN Article Here Including Video

Unbelievable eh! Well believe it! I can only shake my head, and feel bad for this couple. In my opinion lawsuits such as these make a mockery of the legal system. I really hope that saner heads prevail!

What are your thoughts?

If being publicly outed was not bad enough...

Yesterday I blogged about how BP CEO Browne resigned due to being publicly outed as gay now it seems the whole sordid affair may result in perjury charges. Read on:

Former BP chief Lord John Browne may now face charges of perjury amid allegations that he lied to a court about a gay partner, reports say.

Lord Browne quit on Tuesday after the Mail on Sunday won a court battle to print details of his private life.

He also apologised that legal statements he made about a relationship with Jeff Chevalier were "untruthful".

The newspaper said it would be handing its "evidence" against him to the Attorney General for investigation.

However, the judge in the High Court case said that he would not be referring the matter as he believed that disclosure in the judgement of Lord Browne's behaviour was "probably sufficient punishment".

Full BBC Article Here

I agree with the judge's thoughts above. Is it not bad enough to feel one must resign over this? For shame on his ex-lover for going public. I really have a problem with that type of action. What are your thoughts?

BP CEO Browne Resigns Due To Leaked Personal Info

It is surprising, and disheartening that in this day, and age one's sex life or sexual orientation can result in the need to resign one's position. Read on:

The chief executive of oil giant BP, Lord Browne of Madingley, has resigned from his post with immediate effect.

Lord Browne said he had stepped down to save BP from embarrassment after a newspaper won a court battle to print details of his private life.

He also apologised that statements he had made in legal documents about a four year relationship with Jeff Chevalier had been "untruthful".

Lord Browne had planned to step down from the company in July.

He will be replaced by his nominated successor Tony Hayward.

Full BBC Article Here

As a semi-private person myself I do understand the embarrassment, and shock Browne must be feeling. Who cares about his sex life anyway, and how does it relate to his professional career? A sad loss for BP, and shame on the tattle-teller of dirty secrets. These types who wilfully disregard other's feelings via nasty bits of gossip, and tell-all books irk me!

Some Insight Into Credit Card Usage

I think you'd be hard pressed to meet anyone (that is of adult age) that either doesn't use credit cards or has never had any to speak of. If you are such a person, then you are definitely in the minority, and I've never met you!

I got my first credit card through my financial institution at age 21. It was kind of like a right of passage come to think of it, reach the age of majority, and obtain a credit card. Boy, did I feel all grown up! And you can bet that in a few short months it was pushed to it's limit as I over spent, and racked up those interest charges!

That was many moons ago, too many to count, and I am far more wiser with my credit card purchases, and credit cards in general so to speak.

For instance I have done my homework on 0% balance transfers where you can switch to much better rates. I have also looked into 0% credit cards, and yes my friends they do exist! All you have to do is shop around a little, and compare what is being offered to you.

If you'd like some further information on credit cards in general please do click on the links within this blog entry, which will take you too a website that's expertise is in credit cards.

There is no need to get into financial difficulties with credit card usage as I did many years ago provided you arm yourself with some knowledge about the best suited cards for you, and a good dose of your own common sense!

Cheers!

Hot News From Google!

Google is reinventing its homepage to offer end users greater scope for personalisation of it's page. Read on:

The search giant is introducing features to allow users to publish their own content on a personalised Google homepage.

It represents Google's latest move towards a more user-centric web.

The changes come as Google dismissed Viacom's copyright claims and argued that its litigation threatened the very foundations of social networking.

In its $1bn lawsuit, entertainment giant Viacom alleged that Google-owned video-sharing website YouTube has used around 160,000 unauthorised clips.

In an official response filed with the US District Court in New Year, Google argued that the lawsuit threatens the whole social networking eco-system.

"By seeking to make carriers and hosting providers liable for internet communications, Viacom's complaint threatens the way hundreds of millions of people legitimately exchange information, news, entertainment and political and artistic expression," it said.

I cannot wait until Google unveils these new, and innovative ideas! Google is already my fave search engine of choice. Making it even more user-friendly, and customizable will make it that much more appealing to use! I also appreciate their strong stance in defence of social networking, and will be watching the Viacom suit closely.

Cheers!

Lifelines Family Services

Lifelines Family Services, is an online resource for parents, and families that are coping with a troubled teenager/s, and are in need of advice to assist their kids in getting back on track. They freely provide guidance in areas such as seeking out reputable Group Homes For Troubled Teens throughout the United States.

Their toll-free number listed above will put you in touch with caring, trained staff members who are not there to judge, but to help you, and your family.

I loved this quote from their website, that I absolutely agree with:

"They're not bad kids...They're good kids, making bad decisions."

As a parent, I am happy that such resources exist!

Lifelines Family Services, is private, and confidential. Let them help get your child he help that they need to lead happy, productive lives again.
