Thursday Thirteen: Although happier, I'm still shell shocked... and I really need to bring teh stress-free!

First, a public apology... (Thursday Thirteen Purists... just scroll down to the banner if you want to skip this bit...) I had a commenter on Tuesday who, in the past, upset me by mocking the nation of my birth... my home and native land... who came in on a post and as of now, I believe meant to say I was a "stupid liberal"... which I admit to being PART of that... I'm a "Capital C Liberal"... a "Red Tory" as they're known here in Canucklestan... Stupid? Maybe... but I'll accept the label of liberal.

That said, I have to assume, in what I can consider a small forensic "looking back" at things that his stupid liberal became stupid libel... which I believe was a typo... well, I believe that now after looking through my correspondence and backups.

I thought I was being accused of lying, not being socially conscious to a fault... and since the fellow had slagged my country previously, I went a little nova...

That said, looking back, it may have been just a typo.

If it was, then I do apologise and my removal of the comments was a bit harsh.

If it was not... well...

Anyway, to this fellow, if it WAS a typo, then I do apologise.

I do ask that ANYONE who thinks I don't like America or Americans understand something... I'm a PROUD Canadian... and my family are proudly of United Empire Loyalist stock... and we do trace back to settling in New Amsterdam and I have MANY friends AND relations in America... and have visited The States often... and I have explained my feelings nicely in this post a while back.

America is great... and I truly feel it's destined to become even greater... and I am so amazed and happy that this past election, history HAD to be made... either with a woman in a real elected American power position... or an African American president... which is what happened. Either way, it says a lot about the American Dream... and what's great is that we have proof and evidence that, indeed, it's open to all.

So, with that said... I will move on to the REAL post for today...

THURSDAY THIRTEEN!

I won't miss the election rhetoric now that both America and Canada hav finished the processes for now... I won't say I didn't find it fascinating and enlightening... but my nerves are frayed and I, perhaps like you, need a little release.

So... something a littler "lighter" seems to be something that might fit the bill.

So... a little "fluffier"... hmmm...

Thirteen things... things that aren't too serious... something like a quiz about... ME!

A TEST: THIRTEEN "FACTS" ABOUT ME...
SOME MAY BE TRUE... OTHERS MAY BE FALSE...
IT'S UP TO YOU TO FIGURE OUT WHICH IS WHICH.

Answers in the comments section...

#13: There is a suppressed picture of me as a VERY young lad wearing naught but a strategically placed maple leaf tied with a string around my waste... My family thought it would be "cute" and "funny"... I still loath it.

#12: I am one of the few men on this planet that can do eyeliner on the inside of his eyelids.

#11: I once was rushed to the emergency room as a kid because, through the force of suction, I had managed to get a pop-tin stuck on my tongue.

#10: I was once referred to as having "kind yellow eyes".

#9: I was infamous with my family at Thanksgiving for getting "the trots" the next day thanks to overindulging in pumpkin pie... every bloody year.

#8: My one sister, on me being delivered home from the hospital as a new born, apparently burst into tears screaming at my parents to, "Take it back!"

#7: I used Windows '98 as my primary home operating system until 2006.

#6: I never attended art college... but for some odd reason, many people think I did.

#5: For over a decade, I did not own any footwear except one pair of boots.

#4: I've been known to weep at receiving tea as a gift.

#3: I've also wept at receiving a pewter flask as a gift... and I'm a teetotaller.

#2: I have legitimate trouble remembering my own phone number... but can cite verbatim several Monty Python skits.

#1: My illustrious childhood hockey career consisted of several years playing... and exactly one goal. My mother STILL has the date of the goal marked on her calendar.

THEY'RE ALL TRUE!!! Sadly...

#13: There is a suppressed picture of me as a VERY young lad wearing naught but a strategically placed maple leaf tied with a string around my waste.

I believe I was about eight... and yes, they thought AND THINK it was a riot... and "ever so cute"... I believe my older sister has it... or my mom... either way, it will be destroyed.

#12: I am one of the few men on this planet that can do eyeliner on the inside of his eyelids.

Sign of a misspent youth in the 1980's.

#11: I once was rushed to the emergency room as a kid because, through the force of suction, I had managed to get a pop-tin stuck on my tongue.

Remember those "push-hole" pop-tins? They had two "push" buttons... a small one you pushed to release the pressure and then the big one? Well, as a kid, I managed to open a can of Tab (EGADS!) with only the BIG button opened... and started "suckling" the syrupy-saccharin stuff out by "sucking" on the tin... well, my tongue popped in and was literally stuck IN the hole... turning the tin would have cut my to ribbons, so I was taken to the hospital... with a towel over my head at my request to avoid "embarrassment"... which, in many ways, was far more embarrassing.

#10: I was once referred to as having "kind yellow eyes".

A boyhood friend called me this... and no, not because I was jaundiced or reptilian... but I had very light brown eyes.

#9: I was infamous with my family at Thanksgiving for getting "the trots" the next day thanks to overindulging in pumpkin pie... every bloody year.

Self explanatory. I still love the stuff... and it still hates me.

#8: My one sister, on me being delivered home from the hospital as a new born, apparently burst into tears screaming at my parents to, "Take it back!"

True. I still wonder if she feels my parents SHOULD have had "buyers remorse"?

#7: I used Windows '98 as my primary home operating system until 2006.

What can I say? Old habits die hard!

#6: I never attended art college... but for some odd reason, many people think I did.

Odd but true. The issue stems from living with three other people a long while back... two of them attended a local arts college... and we were all computer geeks... so I spent a lot of time conversing with them about the school and the technology therein... On top of that, most of my socializing was with these folks so therefore, many "art school" friends... The final straw came with a biography someone wrote of/for me for a website that got it wrong... and said I "attended" the school as opposed to "visiting frequently"... Either way, it's odd how people STILL assume that I "attended" it... when nope, I didn't.

#5: For over a decade, I did not own any footwear except one pair of boots.

...from ages 22 through 35... See this post for details on those boots.

#4: I've been known to weep at receiving tea as a gift.

Kind of a sad story... I had been struggling and on my own for a number of years and was about to spend the first sort-of family Christmas with my mom and sisters... and was asked what I wanted... and I said I wanted a proper tea pot to make my tea. Well, I got the pot... but also, a collection of Twinings tea which is my favourite... and because it had been a luxury I couldn't afford and didn't have for so long, I did indeed cry at the time.

#3: I've also wept at receiving a pewter flask as a gift... and I'm a teetotaller.

Yup, I don't drink... that said, I am a re-enactor... and I've always wanted a "proper flask"... and as a first-ever birthday gift from Sue, she got me a flask and engraved it with a little thing we still often say to each other... it meant so much... and still does... and yeah, I cried there too. (HEY! I'm confident in my manly-ways to handle telling you folks about my tears!)

#2: I have legitimate trouble remembering my own phone number... but can cite verbatim several Monty Python skits.

What's my cell number? No idea... I need to look it up constantly... but The Parrot Sketch? Burying the Cat? The Constitutional Peasant? Yup! All on the tip of my tongue... and many others as well! I've got my priorities!

#1: My illustrious childhood hockey career consisted of several years playing... and exactly one goal. My mother STILL has the date of the goal marked on her calendar.

Okay, I was a net-minder which didn't help my "score"... but sadly, I did play a couple of seasons as a winger and a defenceman... and yup, I scored one big goal... and I'm not sure if my mom's proud... or mocking me.

Oh gosh, I'm so sorry to hear that someone harassed you on your blog. That really sucks. I just delete those comments. Life's too short and they don't hear anyway. There's so much hate going around. Makes me sad.

I love your list. I know exactly what you mean about crying for the gift of tea. I've been very poor and very hungry. That kind of gift is the best.

((hug)) Don't let the bastards get you down.

Hey Laura... Because, secretly, they all want us to write books later on about how much they SCARRED us as kids. To this day, I can't directly look at a maple leaf on a string...

Hello Nicholas... Hop into a TARDIS and ask THIS fellow.

Hi Claudia on a Limb... When you hit those points, it is amazing how much a small luxury does make all the difference.

One of our grand daughters said something similar about her little sister. When her parents brought the newborn home, Emily asked, "Is she gonna stay?"

LIBERAL?!!! I thought we agreed that we were basically moderates! I've been decieved! I'm hurt!!! Oh, the pain of it all. Okay, you can be a moderate liberal and I'll be a moderate conservative.

Hey DrillerAA... It's weird... "Liberal" isn't a dirty word in Canada... well, not to the majority. Heck, our current "second party" is named The Liberal Party! The other party USED to be (officially) The Progressive Conservative Party... of course, now it's just called (officially) The Conservative Party... and yeah, I admit it... I'm a capital "C" liberal... a "Red Tory" as they call 'em here... so yeah, I'm a moderate lib... dang me.

One Old Green Bus

Allow me to start with we do not own nor are we selling a bus. Just had to get that out...

This blog was started in April of 2006... during a very bad time for me and my family when money was very tight and life was very hard.

We maintained a happier outlook on life by fantasizing... talking about what we would do when times were better... and as Sue and myself are Anglophiles, England factored greatly into our "plans".

During these bad times, while looking at news items which, at the time included items about London removing their venerable old Routemasters, I came across one photo of an old green bus... and somehow, my whole family adopted it. It became very much "our bus". (Details about "our bus" are available by clicking here.)

Like most of you, I'd heard about the fellow who'd made a million dollars selling tiny ads online... and the fellow who did trades and turned a paper clip into a house... so I thought, since we couldn't make our bus actually into "our bus" (well beyond our means,) I'd try an "online" appeal... to make the focused item of our hopes into a tangible thing in our lives...

More specifically, in a burst of adult/juvenile optimism, I had hoped to show the youngest member of the family, who at the time was still very youthful and impressionable, that dreams really could become reality if you hope and, more importantly, try.

Well, I'm pretty sure you figured it out... we had limited succes in this venture... and the youngest has now reached an age where she is more traditionally "teenaged" cynical than much else about the world, which isn't a dreadful thing... but there's a "good news" portion to this... our personal situation with money is better, life has improved, and some people really liked my rambling here... so, I decided to keep things going... Yes, I will "give up" on asking for help on a bus... and have to give up on even trying as hard to get the bus through online means... and yes, be far more realistic... but I don't mind this "turn" of things as I actually enjoy venting, trying my hand at humour, and generally keeping on online presence outside my usual things.

Thanks to those who were/are "Busly Dream" enthusiasts... I suppose that our buses for now will be single-deck with the letters "TTC" emblazoned on them... but this blog will live as does our dream! (It's just a little quieter on that latter bit...)
