Almost Wordless Wednesday - The Wind that's been beneath my fingers...

You may not believe this, but I rarely get "new toys"... Either finances get in the way or I "snap out of it"... but as regular readers (and those without enough fibre in their diets) know, I recently splurged a bit and bought MY WIND!!! (Granted, as a professional tech, my company bought it for me and I'm paying it off through them... but hey, it's MINE!)

The above shows my Wind in it's normal "home habitat"... sitting in front of my desktop working in tandem with it moving files and the like. Of course, at home, my desktop is king, but my Wind is so wee, it's a perfect companion for my commute on the bus and subway... (Geez, this is sounding like a commercial... but bear with me...)

Wanna hear it's personalized (by me) startup sound?

...anyway...

Yup, that's a normal ball point pen on top of it for a bit of perspective...

The three images above show it in comparison to Sue's Compaq Pressario... like I said, very wee...

...and for more perspective, here it is, open, with a DVD on the keyboard. (HINT! Bonus points if you notice the "bus" reference tossed into the image above...)

Surprisingly, I find it as easy (or difficult) to use as a standard laptop...

For the geeks...

It's running Windows XP Home (it came with it,) and has a gig of RAM, 80 gig hard drive (not SSD), and a 10" screen running at 1024x600 and is using the Intel Atom processor running nice and fast for a unit like this. It's pretty "cool" (as in cooling) with a goodly side vent (cooler than the Eee's I looked at,) and has a multi-card reader and three USB ports as well as a nice standard NIC port built in and wireless b/g as well as Bluetooth... Nicest of all is it was well under $500 CDN to buy it.

...and what made me say, Oh yeah, I gotta get one of these babies!...? Well, it was THIS article...

Take THAT!

Okay, I've bragged and geeked enough... or have I TRULY geeked enough??? Check back tomorrow... no Wind talk, but a geeking-I-will-be-going!

For now though, I'm just a "proud papa" of a very wee computer!

Enjoy your toy :)

Interesting laptop. I have generally focused on larger units with raw compute power - but having used my MacBook for a couple of years as my main computer, I definitely appreciate the smaller form factor.

Hey Catsynth... Oh, like it says, my desktop is still king... but since I have two hours of commuting per day on trains and buses, this is a fantastic way of using time and generally staying amused.

Very cool! I LOVE gadgets! I use a Toshiba laptop for serious stuff, but bought an eee about a month ago, just to carry along on outings to the coffeeshop, etc. However, my daughter grabbed it and uses it more than me!

I have a 13.3" Toshiba laptop and I just love it. I take it everywhere. When on vacation, I can download the photos from the days events and delete the ones that make me look bad before anyone else sees them. Of course when we get home, everyone wants to know how come there are now photos of me on vacation. I dunno!

Hey KathyLikesPink... The youngest has "shown interest" in my new toy... but I believe the term is "From My Cold Dead Hands"... She may get an Eee later on or something similar... but this is MINE! :)

Hello SandyCarlson... Egads! That sounds ominous! :)

Hi DrillerAA... I have a feeling when we depart on a vacation, same will apply for me!

Howdy Sassy Mama Bear... Davros is a favourite! (The "new" Davros is AMAZING too!)

Great piece. Though modern portables are frequently still called laptops, as I'm sure you're away this generation is more correctly called "notebooks" (smaller than the old "laptops"). But yours is the first one I've seen that I'd be tempted to call a "paperback computer".

Oh... and I notice you did manage to work in the Dr. Who tie-in.

Best!

Hey Raven... Sadly, Davros only brings a HUGE smile to my wife's face... it worries me... :)

This blog is called One Old Green Bus. Yup, the bus is green. What colour is the bus?

The Current Time in Toronto is...

One Old Green Bus

Allow me to start with we do not own nor are we selling a bus. Just had to get that out...

This blog was started in April of 2006... during a very bad time for me and my family when money was very tight and life was very hard.

We maintained a happier outlook on life by fantasizing... talking about what we would do when times were better... and as Sue and myself are Anglophiles, England factored greatly into our "plans".

During these bad times, while looking at news items which, at the time included items about London removing their venerable old Routemasters, I came across one photo of an old green bus... and somehow, my whole family adopted it. It became very much "our bus". (Details about "our bus" are available by clicking here.)

Like most of you, I'd heard about the fellow who'd made a million dollars selling tiny ads online... and the fellow who did trades and turned a paper clip into a house... so I thought, since we couldn't make our bus actually into "our bus" (well beyond our means,) I'd try an "online" appeal... to make the focused item of our hopes into a tangible thing in our lives...

More specifically, in a burst of adult/juvenile optimism, I had hoped to show the youngest member of the family, who at the time was still very youthful and impressionable, that dreams really could become reality if you hope and, more importantly, try.

Well, I'm pretty sure you figured it out... we had limited succes in this venture... and the youngest has now reached an age where she is more traditionally "teenaged" cynical than much else about the world, which isn't a dreadful thing... but there's a "good news" portion to this... our personal situation with money is better, life has improved, and some people really liked my rambling here... so, I decided to keep things going... Yes, I will "give up" on asking for help on a bus... and have to give up on even trying as hard to get the bus through online means... and yes, be far more realistic... but I don't mind this "turn" of things as I actually enjoy venting, trying my hand at humour, and generally keeping on online presence outside my usual things.

Thanks to those who were/are "Busly Dream" enthusiasts... I suppose that our buses for now will be single-deck with the letters "TTC" emblazoned on them... but this blog will live as does our dream! (It's just a little quieter on that latter bit...)
