Doctor Who Monday: So, we disolved into a small puddle of sticky goo...

Describe episode twelve of the new "Doctor Who" series IV? ZOMG. Yeah, that would be the "'Net Geek" word for it... Zomg.

Like I said, no intentional spoilers here, but dear God, they have set up not one, but three cliff-hangers...!

Sue ended up watching the episode twice... and the "Confidential"... looking for those oh-so kind of elusive "clues" they chuck in.

RTD banged more into that 45 minutes than can be believed... and for older fans of the show, even though some of us had a BIG inkling of what and who was coming... it was still a ZOMG moment.

I can safely say this, this season's "finale" is way more meaningful if you can find/watch a 1975 Doctor Who serial named Genesis of the Daleks... beyond that, I'm staying "mum" on things aside from saying the following...

  • Russell T. Davies said that Saturday's episode's cliff-hanger was so extreme, he figured you could lean your head out a window and audibly hear the screams... he was right.
  • "NO SLEEP AND PROHIBITED TRAVEL MAKE CAAN A CRAZY DALEK!"

Other than this, you're on your own... but the words "Pins and Needles" are apt for our joint anticipation for next weeks show...

That said, in a surprise move to no one, the "fans" loved the show... and the intellectual snobs loathed it. Figgers.

...after all, when reading SOME of the reviews out there, I know that those reviewers have such better shows to offer the viewing public with their own production... wot? They don't? Hunh?!?

Okay, allow me to pen an open letter..

Dear Apparently Fun-Challenged Reviewers,

Sometimes, there's this thing in fiction called "suspension of disbelief"... and another thing called a "lead up"... this show called upon the first to do the latter.

The one Canadian viewer who seemed to COMPLAIN that they're "inner twelve-year-old" was loving the show, but the jaded, pseudo-intellectual, let-me-apply-science-even-though-I-really-don't-work-in-or-with-science-for-a-day-job, numbnut who'd probably cancel 85% of the shows we loved as kids because of things like, "Scooby Doo, as a REAL Great Dane, just would not talk like that!" should consider this...

Sometimes, we need "The Terminator" in our lives more than "Raise The Red Lantern".

Yup, it's okay to switch off that unfortunate grey-matter you loosely refer to as an intellect and enjoy the roller coaster ride...

...which YOU (the one in question,) admitted to enjoying until you decided that your "inner-scientist and artiste" said you just COULDN'T like this show.

So, to you... here's a puzzle for your grand intellect... make a sentence out of the following words...

A Be Pompous Don't Windbag

I thank you for your input... and when I want to know how "Doctor Who" measures up to the complete works of Kafka as presented by the honour-roll class from RADA, I will come by your site...

Bestest regards,

Matthew XXOOXX

There! I feel much better!

Nuttier than a fruitcake...

NEWS ITEMS: Making Th'Rounds...

From The Scotsman: A dumptruck full of cash is trying to convince David Tennant to stay with the TARDIS a touch longer...

...and as I've often said, if he doesn't, I know at least two young Canadian women who would find their way to Wales, Scotland, or England, find him... and "convince" him to stay... not that I personally approve of physical violence, but hey...

From TV Squad: AMERICAN FANS: Need another good reason to either buy the box set OR, if you can't wait, yes, break the law and use BitTorrent to get the Doctor Who finale??? Sci-Fi is most likely going to be cutting twenty minutes from the show so it will "fit their schedule"!

If I was an American viewer... or not working with someone "on the inside" who gets me the shows rapidly and from the original source... I would be MARCHING on Sci-Fi's headquarters... seriously.

According to "The Age": Smart women who like eccentric commitment-phobes that can fix things and tell jokes have a sex-symbol now.

...is this a large demographic?

Something for Sue... and a few others... John Barrowman outside the CBC (Canadian Broadcasting Corp.) signing autographs in Toronto... I don't THINK Sue was there... but I was at work, so who knows...

HELP STOP BILL C-61

A MESSAGE FOR CANADIANS: The Federal Government has tabled a bill that would turn most of us into criminals.

For example, a kid who "rips" an MP3 from his parents CD collection, re-mixes the tune, and uploads it to YouTube could face a total of $40,500.00 or up to ten years in prison... and that's just ONE example of many.

Unlocking your cell phone for use in another country or with another service, copying video tapes to DVD or computer videos, moving music from your CDs to your iPod... all will be illegal and a minimum $500.00 fine per phone/song/single video clip... maximum fine of $20,000.00 or five-years per offence in prison per phone/song/single video clip.

Don't make listening to CD tracks on an iPod or copying your professionally made wedding video tape to DVD akin to drug dealing and pimping.

If like me, you think this is wrong... be you Conservative, Liberal, New Democrat, Bloc, or other, PLEASE write to your MP and let them know... PLEASE stop bill C-61.

Blog Your Blessings Sundays: Nothing like unwrapping a riddle, wrapped in a mystery, shrouded by a puzzle...

This is a REALLY short blessing this week... which came to me watching Sue trying to figure out the meaning behind a whackload of "hints" and "clues" in last night's amazing episode of Doctor Who...

I love puzzles... well, not really... I don't love jigsaw puzzles, which is how most people now see the world "puzzle" anymore. They're okay, but not really my personal cup of tea.

No, I love riddles... mysteries... things that need to be figured out and worked on. To make sense of things that don't seem to make sense. To find answers to questions.

I am not, nor have I ever been contented with the idea of no one will ever know or it will be a mystery forever! There are always ways to find answers... there are always ways to learn.

This is not to say I don't like and admire "mysteries"... but I don't find them any less impressive when something mysterious is resolved.

I know what causes lightning and thunder... how the elements come together to produce them... but it doesn't make a good thunderstorm any less spectacular and, in many ways for me, enjoyable.

My blessing is the human spirit of always needing to find answers and consistently learn...

Whether it's the big questions or a quick word puzzle in a newspaper... I find immense satisfaction in resolving puzzles of all sorts... or even just working on them to try!

Lame posting for a Saturday...

On this dog day of Summer in Toronto... other work and stuff is taking me away from blogging for a day.

Truth to tell, I have a massive website re-launch on one of my other servers to contend with that's giving me a few issues... and I HAVE to get things launched this evening!

...I wonder if Microsoft programmers often feel this way... and ignore the bugs sometimes... oh wait, I know they do!

Anyway, I shall be back with my blessing tomorrow... but for now, I must sweat and toil in the coding mines of Joomla...

Re: Doctor Who, Series Four, Episode Twelve... ARRRRGH!!!?!?!!

Stupid "Stolen Earth"... need NEXT WEEKS SHOW NOW!!!

...that said, according to "The Scotsman", they are indeed backing up a dump-truck full of money to keep David Tennant in as The Doctor.

Really quick post 'cuz it's too hot to do much else in Toronto right now...

I love America... and I love Americans... I have often said that some of my favourite memories as a kid were driving from Toronto to Florida and stopping in Ohio, Georgia, Tennessee, and my favourite state of the Union, Kentucky.

That said, the black eye America has with the world was never more poignant than a "Thursday Thirteen" Sue conferred upon me on coming home yesterday...

Apparently, on one "TT", a woman noted that she was proud to be American because Americans were all heroes... The "evidence" of this was that America is always helping people all over the world, but when it came to their own crisis, the world never came to help those heroes in the States.

God bless Nicholas at A Gentleman's Domain who apparently pointed out that sixty nations offered America assistance after Hurricane Katrina... and were turned down... and look how well FEMA did without that help.

I also wanted to forward this person's URL to some of the thousands of families on Canada's East Coast who housed American travellers stuck in Gander and whatnot when 9/11 grounded all flights... or one of the literally thousands of police officers, fire fighters, construction workers, and EMTs in Toronto who went to New York after the terrorist attacks... and let them know how (I guess,) they don't count.

I realise that this was one ignorant blogger's opinion... and simply showed an utter lack of understanding about "the rest of the world"... but when you're not an American... and you don't live in America... you often get tired of being told how worthless you are by some Americans. Many Americans... even presidents... often make America look a bit like "The Prettiest Girl In School" from some 1980's John Hughes movie... who has every reason to boast... but boasts so often and feels so empowered by her looks that she ends up becoming ugly in many other student's eyes and her good looks seem more and more artificial... and in that, she's more than a little insensitive to those around her.

Me, my family, and really pretty much everyone I know who lives in Canada... does not want to move to America or become American. Not out of hate... not out of any malice... but because we have the same freedoms and in many cases, a better lifestyle (at least, according to the UN and several other sources...) and we're not jealous of America... we're neighbours. That's all...

...and we have some heroes too.

I've often said that patriotism does not mean having to say everyone else sucks... which is odd... because not too long ago, I was saying it to many Canadians who often feel that their national identity is threatened by our large and sometimes overbearing neighbour to the South... and now, here I am saying it to an American blogger...

I suppose the world is indeed changing.

America is great... it is beautiful... and it is a good nation at heart... but some people in it must remember that there are other places on the globe that honestly have an equal and, in some case, statistically better quality of life for it's citizens... with all the same (or similar) rights and freedoms... with an equally interesting history... and no, we're not all pushing at our borders to run to the USA because we're jealous of it.

The "Prettiest Girl in School" can often come off as more make-up and veneer than actual beauty to those around her... and she might try to recognize and learn from those around her to make herself a far more attractive person.

Just a thought.

Thursday Thirteen - Thirteen Famed Relations

THURSDAY THIRTEEN!

This one, I gave a five-person "preview" of on Saturday... (click here if you missed it...) Basically, my biggus sissus is the self-appointed (and VERY hard working and appreciated) family genealogist. She's been doing practically daily updates to our family tree and diving into our storied lineage using ancestry.com which I look in on her efforts usually once every day or two.

One of the more interesting features of the site is being able to look up who's famous you're related to... a button that shows you who you share at least a vague bit of DNA... okay, in most cases, you share about as much DNA with the "famed" kin as you do the average person on the street who doesn't know you from Adam... but it's still very interesting...

So, since on Saturday I covered my cousins Rutherford B. Hayes, J.P. Morgan, Tom Landry, James Dean, and my great aunt Joan of Arc... here's...

THIRTEEN FAMOUS FOLKS I HAVE
A GLANCING RELATION TO...

#13: Meet my 6th Cousin 4 times removed, Emily Dickinson...

So this is where I get my poetic flair!

#12: Meet my 6th Cousin 5 times removed, Nathaniel Hawthorne...

One of Sue's most favourite books is The House of Seven Gables... perhaps that's why she's attracted to me!

#11: Meet my 8th Cousin, no removals apparently, Jack Kerouac...

Would cousin Jack berate me to get the bus back On The Road???

#10: Meet my 6th Cousin 4 times removed, The Right Honourable Louis Stephen St Laurent...

Oddly enough, not the only Canadian prime minister in the tree...

#9: Meet my 8th Cousin 3 times removed, Jean Jacques Rousseau...

Got's some thinkin' type cuzins, fur shure!

#8: Meet my 9th Cousin 2 times removed, Agatha Christie...

No giant wasps, I'm afraid... (Doctor Who fans just pumped their fists in the air on that note...) I did, however, grow up with a great fondness for Hercule Poirot books!

#7: Meet my 11th Cousin, no removals again, Bob Hope...

I don't have a ski-jump for a nose... nor am I a golfer... but teh funneh thing? I haz that sumtimez.

#6: Meet my 5th Cousin 4 times removed, The Right Honourable Henri Charles Wilfrid Laurier...

This still isn't the end of my Canadian Prime Minister lineage!

#5: Meet my 7th Cousin 2 times removed, Lillian Gish...

She was the "First Lady" of the silents... doubtful she and I share much DNA then because I am rarely silent...

#4: Meet my 9th Cousin 1 times removed, Louis Pasteur...

I'm milking this relation for as much comedy as I can get! (GROAN!) Sorry, that was very lame... but hey, I'm tired...

#3: Meet my 8th Cousin 13 times removed, William Thomson... or Lord Kelvin to you!

Poor fella... he'd probably weep if he knew I got into it with my grade eight science teacher because I did not believe the temperature for "Absolute Zero" (the supposed temperature that all atomic particles stop moving,) could be set so neatly in stone... and I was right in the end.

#2: Meet my 8th Cousin, no removals again, Franz Liszt...

I heard he leaned a lot. Okay, that wasn't very good either... but I do like his music, if that in any way can be accepted as a sort of mitigating factor.

#1: Meet my 7th Cousin 3 times removed, The Right Honourable Joseph Philippe Pierre Yves Elliott Trudeau...

My friend Barney, upon hearing this, wagged his fat finger at the computer screen and bellowed, AHA! I KNEW IT! Three PMs in my roots... perhaps I should run for office!

Super-Familial Bonus! Meet my Great, Great, Great, Great, Great, Great, Great, Great, Great, Great, Great, Great, Great, Great, Great, Great, Great, Great, Great, Great, Grandfather, Jacques Cartier. (My twenty-first great grandfather...)

...and I didn't mention my 5th Cousin 4 times removed, Maurice "The Rocket" Richard, or my 5th Cousin 5 times removed, James Matthew Barrie, or my Distant (26) Great Grandfather, Robert Morris, or my 3rd Cousin 18 times removed, Gottlieb Daimler... but hey, I may need another list another day! :)

Get the Thursday Thirteen code here!

The purpose of the meme is to get to know everyone who participates a little bit better every Thursday. Visiting fellow Thirteeners is encouraged! If you participate, leave the link to your Thirteen in others comments. It’s easy, and fun! Be sure to update your Thirteen with links that are left for you, as well! I will link to everyone who participates and leaves a link to their 13 things. Trackbacks, pings, comment links accepted!

Helping Hand Thursday - Laptops

This past week we were shopping around for a laptop computer for the kiddo who is off to University to study law this coming fall. Shopping for a laptop online can be a daunting task without the benefit of a site like ShopWiki to refer to. ShopWiki does not just list shops that pay for advertising, and therefore is a good source to check out ALL of your options.

Are you wondering what type of computer would best suit you? You might just want to check out the "Desktop or Laptop, which is better?" chart that ShopWiki has put together so that users can easily see the differences for comparison purposes.

The site is a good resource in my opinion that gives detailed info on all the big name brands like Toshiba laptops, and the much talked about macBook Air notebook.

We have decided on a Dell laptop for the kid, which we hope will last her over the next four years. We are now looking to get her a laptop bag, and hey ShopWiki has an entire section devoted to those too!

Randominium...

Weep not... if you were weeping... or whatever...

Got more than a few FaceBook messages and e-mail about the pulling of the "dream" from the blog, as it were...

If you click the link I've given above, you'll see that really, the only things that have changed is us begging for help... and the reasons the "edge is off" (we're not feeling a time pinch,) is a combination of many things...

That said, to give you folks an idea, I had a "real" dream (a couple of nights back,) where Sue had come up with a plan and, indeed, the bus was in our hands... and I was absolutely sure it would not work, but in the dream, I ended up coming "face-to-face" with the bus... climbing on board... and in my "real dream", I was very close to tears of joy... in fact, I was numb with feelings over the whole affair... and Sue was beaming like she'd just won a Nobel prize... and, just after boarding the rear platform, looking through the lower saloon (lower deck) and heading up the stairs to check out the upper saloon, a small white-and-black dog licked my face to let me know it was time to wake up and let him out for a piddle... and my dream moment was lost in the usual pet-driven morning routine of the waking world.

I told Sue about the dream... in as much detail as I could muster... and even she said it was wonderful... and asked why I didn't let Kipling escape and try to recapture it. (We all kinda know that never happens...)

So, judging by Sue's reaction to my "real dream" and the fact I had it in the first place, DON'T count us COMPLETELY out... this bus MAY ONE DAY be about OUR REAL OLD GREEN BUS... but again, no begging here any more.

Is it theft? I'm not so sure...

Let me give you something to ponder... If you're sitting at home with a WiFi enabled computer, and you notice that you've connected to someone's open network (someone forgot to, or chooses not to protect their network,) is it a crime to use that signal?

Don't get me wrong here, I do use my own high-speed connection that I dutifully pay for and although we do have "wireless", it is protected with three means of security... but what if I didn't protect it? Should I be able to bring about criminal charges against someone that taps into it from another apartment or nearby home?

My answer is oddly enough, no.

You see, my "WiFi" is being broadcast into their home or whatever... They didn't ask for it, and yet, there it is... and if I had an apple tree in my yard and apples fell from the tree into my neighbours yard, I wouldn't ask them to return them or face criminal prosecution.

Now, since my network IS protected, the analogy would be the neighbours climbing and picking the apples if they managed to "hack" my security measures... and that's different... but what if they fell onto their property without restraint? Could I claim them as my own and demand, via police force, they be returned?

...in fact, couldn't the neighbour actually complain that my damned apples have fallen into their yard which they now have to look after?

Well, right now in most states and provinces, if your computer hooks into an unprotected network and you use that signal, you're stealing!

...but here's a thought...

If you're using Microsoft Windows, it will automatically seek and hook itself into any available network... and I read on SlashDot that one fellow lost power in his house... and didn't know it as he and two other people at home were using laptops... and all three silently just switched to the neighbour's network... which was unprotected... and the three of them went on obliviously with their online tasks for a long while until someone needed to use another electrical item.

Are these three people criminals?

Appparently, right now in most places, they are.

Personally, I feel that if you have "opened" your network and either know that everyone can use it OR are blisfully unaware that you're allowing other's to use it (meaning you didn't read the manual or even talk to someone in the know of such things,) then it's an invitation to use that bandwidth... and it should not be considered a criminal offence.

To say it is, in my opinion, would be the same as telling someone who glanced over your shoulder on a bus, train, or aircraft that you knew was reading the newspaper in front of you that they "stole" the information you have... or if like me, you live in a big city, receiving an electrical bill for the lights outside that have illuminated your home... after all, you used those light beams, you should pay for them!

I know there is a concern (and justifiable!) that bad elements COULD use your network for rotten and possibly illegal things... but considering the signal is not confined to your personal space AND if you didn't take precautions to ensure that it couldn't happen... or would be "hacking" into a secure network if it did... who's fault is it?

So, what say you? Is an open network truly open for anyone? Should we, in the case of an open, non-secured internet link, make use of this link by outside parties a criminal offence?

One could argue, as they did on SlashDot, that the router and network gave the "client computers" an I.P. address... thus effectively inviting them in... but again, this is all automatic... so can the user of the bandwidth be considered culpable?

Rare is the thing... but beautiful...

DOCTOR WHO MONDAY IS BELOW... JUST SCROLL DOWN A BIT OR CLICK HERE...

It is rare that I get to say this, but God bless my server guys!!!

Long story short... Noticed a "notice" about a possible exploit on the old blog here so I decided to upgrade. It did NOT go well... and while watching the whole thing fall apart like a Britney Spears Etiquette Class, I read and found the "exploit" was, indeed, NOT an exploit... at least, not one that could allow bad people to do bad things to us... they could view "hidden pages" of HTML in the blog directory... that's it... they can't DO anything with them, just view 'em!

Now, I know that some of you are concerned that they'll find those racy pictures of me in a Speedo (akin to a hairy egg wrapped by an elastic band,) but I'm not that concerned... in fact, I was definitely NOT concerned enough to battle with the upgrade.

So, I abandoned the update and decided to restore from my backup...

...I tried to do that from about 4pm until just after midnight... with the odd moment of Cool! I got it! only to be followed by Rats! No dice!

At 12:30am, I finally caved and sent the mess to my server guys and climbed into bed for a restful 4 hours sleep before a big day at work.

I ain't gonna tell tales here, I assumed, with some evidence, that I was going to wake up and find the blog still disabled... because, honestly, my server dudes have let me down pretty consistently...

...but guess what?

Yup, I was PLEASANTLY SURPRISED as I woke up this morning, fired up the PC, et Voila! Une Blog!

So good on my server guys... and sorry for the outtages... and what was a skeletal "Doctor Who Monday Post" (repaired this morning...)

I'm just glad to be back... and kudos where they're due to the server guys! (...and gals.)

And now, what is quickly becoming my most visited post each week... on with Doctor Who Monday!!!

Doctor Who Monday: Lexiconicalfallipatorious

So, did you here, Rose Tyler is back... I know... you're shocked. With the knowledge that we WON'T SPOIL ANYTHING INTENTIONALLY, Rose did indeed make her return... and like last year's episode, Utopia, this third-to-the-last show was running along nicely and enjoyably, and then, during the last five minutes... became EPIC. (Yes, in a good way.) I'm sure professional writers, actors, lighting technicians, etc. will disagree, but as a "new series" Doctor Who fan, I was thoroughly entertained AND kept guessing/thinking AND, most importantly, was grinning like a big lottery winner at the end of the show.

Here's an even weirder one... we watched the "Confidential" for the program and it too was good... and revealing... and very, Very, VERY interesting in an almost spoilerific way.

Granted, in true This-Was-Filmed-a-Long-While-Backitude, they kept saying what a MARVELLOUS secret Rose's return was... which, if you read my missive last Monday, I pointed out saying Rose was returning was about as much of a spoiler as telling someone off to see the movie Titanic for the first time that the boat hits and iceberg and sinks. This was so well kept a secret, one would think that the Canadian Security Intelligence Service was looking after it!

...oh, and I'm very proud of myself... without knowing, I had to stop the show and say to Sue, That fortune teller... She should be saying Chan and then Tho at the beginning and end of her sentences... Yup, I guessed right... The Fortune Teller in the program was played by Chipo Chung who played "Chantho" in the show Utopia.

I'm such a clever fat man.

"Turn Left", this week's episode, managed to grab over 35% of the viewing audience in Britain, which is mighty respectable...

So, the verdict is... I thought it was an excellent episode... with an absolutely fantastic finish... and I am beyond shaking with anticipation for the next two (last two) episodes of this season!

You're a grand man, Russell T. Davies!

...looking forward to seeing the Magnificent Eight in the next two episodes! (I do not consider the image below a spoiler... it's more a "teaser"...)

A tip of the steel-rimmed bowler for the images to The Doctor's Companion, Plantet Gellifrey, BBC, and (oddly enough,) Tech Republic

Who let in these new words into my house? Answer: Yes!

Something a touch scary, at least to me, is the realisation that Sue is able to absorb and remember things about Doctor Who that I can't... especially naming the "monsters". The other day, she peered over my should and said, Oh! Do I see a Sontaran? which, when you consider Sue's only known of "The Whoniverse" for less than a year is impressive... and her memory of the Sontaran race is nothing... she's up on the Slitheen, Gelf Zombies, Adipose, the Cult of Skaro (because everyone knows Daleks... so let's be specific!), the Ood, Carrionites, Sycorax, Krillitane, Toclafane, Vashta Nerada... the list goes on... and those who aren't fans of the show just got really, Really, REALLY bored... so moving on.

Anyway, I've noticed in my legitimately mostly Novice Doctor Who Household (only one person a Doctor Who fan pre-2005,) that certain comments are seeping into day-to-day conversation...

Someone expels a gasseus erruction (read: breaks wind), Are you a Slitheen?

Accident that could have been prevented, The only way to fix that is with a TARDIS.

Someone's ordering someone about in monotone and repeating things, You sound like a Dalek!

...and these are just a few samples.

I guess what makes this noteworthy to me, as an older Doctor Who fan dating his doctors from Jon Pertwee and Tom Baker and forward, is how rapidly these things have taken root in a household that on occasion contains four women... all of who claim David Tennant (the tenth Doctor) as their "Doctor" (three of the four) or Chris Eccleston (the ninth Doctor) as the one.

I 'spose it's goodly that indeed, there is these new fans... and a new generation who will carry on the fandom of the man in the TARDIS fighting monsters... all of whom could be and probably would be, if in reality, members of LI'NDA.

It's great when other's do the research for you!

I'm readying for my "Thursday Thirteen" already... and it's all thanks to my big sister! She's the family genealogist and has done a boffo job at really tracing the old roots through Ancestry.com and it has a REALLY cool feature... "Famous Relatives"!

Apparently, I have "glancing relation" to some interesting historical figures... I'm saving my fave thirteen for Thursday, but here's a sampling of five that the site found...

Rutherford Birchard Hayes

(1822-1893) 19th President of the United States of America

He's my 6th Cousin 5 times removed.

J.P. Morgan

(1837-1913) American Banker

He's my 7th Cousin 4 times removed

Tom Landry

(1924-2000) Football player, head coach

He's my 8th Cousin 2 times removed

James Dean

(1931-1955) American Actor

He's my 9th Cousin 1 times removed

Joan of Arc

(1412-1431) French Military Hero

She was my Distant Great Grand Aunt

Now, I have many geneaologist friends... and they are CRINGING right now... because, realistically, this means really nothing. I don't really share any more DNA with the above than I do with most of you... or anyone on the planet... but it's neat to see the thin lines that do attach me... and hey, kin is kin, right?

Wait'll you see the thirteen I've "kept back" for Thursday!

Learning to embrace your inner geek...

As most of you know, I equate "FaceBook" as a stalker's greatest tool... and most stalkers are indeed great tools... that I'm not 100% fond of really either... and I've also said that there were certain folks from my past who I don't need "poking" me virtually as there's a good reason they cannot "poke" me offline.

That said, there's exceptions to every rule and I was pleased to find two high-school friends online and do gently keep up on their FaceBook comings and goings to at least feel somewhat connected to a touch of my past... as pock-marked and black-streaked as it feels to me.

One friend recently posted the following as their "status" on FaceBook...

[insert high school friend's name here] is looking for a date for Friday night to see the TSO perform music from Star Trek. Yeah, I know that's the geekiest thing you ever heard...

What?

"Geekiest Thing" I've "Ever Heard"???

Granted, I'm the guy who does Monday posts devoted to Doctor Who... and if my friend ever read this, I'm 99.87% sure she'd regale you with tales of my personal "geekdom" at school... and it doesn't hurt that I work in the computer field either, I suppose... so I may not be the BEST person to comment on this, but I was told, once, in my twenties that I was "one cool dude" (I don't think I ever really got over that,) and managed NOT to have a reputation of an ultra-geek throughout my late-teens and twenties... but trust me, I was... and I didn't hide it. When asked, I could talk Star Trek, Doctor Who, Star Wars, even Marvel Comics and classic sci-fi novels until the cows did indeed make their way to their abode!

Anyway, the TSO Star Trek concert sounds AMAZING... I mean, it's hosted by an omnipotent crazy man (John de Lancie) and a holographic medicine man (Robert Picardo) and Sue and I would be so all over it like a flash! (In fact, we both HAD heard about it... and simply forgot when it was happening and missed out when we did thanks to previous plans... even though those plans are looking into ghosts... but I digress...)

"Geekiest Thing"????

Hardly!

Y'know, I've known SO many people that crap on Sci-Fi... until they watch/read/or even listen to some...

God knows I will never forget the person that said that the new "Doctor Who" series (which we introduced them to,) was "Not as good as Grey's Anatomy"... then by the fourth show from the first series said it was "Almost as good as Grey's Anatomy"... then they proceeded, in one weekend, to finish off the first season and most of the second... and then borrowed all our DVDs and is now pretty much caught-up to us on Season Four...

Sci-Fi geekery is geekery that usually involves great stories, fantastic visuals, and loads of action and adventure. Almost all the good shows/books also throw in intellectual stimuli of combining science and ethics as well!

Now, I admitted not too long ago about NOT seeing the new Battlestar Galactica (yet) which is getting RAVE reviews from likely AND unlikely sources... but we are currently watching "Life on Mars" (WHICH EVERYONE SHOULD SEE BEFORE A BIG AMERICAN MEDIA COMPANY RE-MAKES IT AND PROBABLY RUINS IT!) Torchwood, and of course, Doctor Who... and if you saw the people (and the amount of "those people",) who I've gotten hooked on "The Who", you'd be shocked... and amazed... and probably say, Hmmm... that can't be all THAT geeky... (and you'd be right!)

We would have KILLED to see the concert below...

(You should see the bits where the Cybermen and the Daleks made an appearance in the above concert!)

Should the opportunity of anything EQUIVALENT to the above come to T.O., you KNOW we'll be there IN FORCE!

Sci-fi geeky? Perhaps... but I say EMBRACE THE GEEK! Be damned the conventions of supposed normality! It really only proves you have great intellect, imagination, and the ability to follow, understand, and comprehend what people who subsist on only reality TV shows can never appreciate.

Besides, if my friend ever DOES read this, dare you to tell either this person OR this person that the Star Trek concert was "too geeky"! C'mon, I dare ya!

Thursday Thirteen: Thirteen Bonus-Points for Changing the Direction of This Blog...

THURSDAY THIRTEEN!

One Old Green Bus will still be and always will be One Old Green Bus... and it will be a kinda memorial to the original point of this blog... but after "X" amount of years, we're caving in...

I hate to say "Giving Up"... but I suppose that is the accurate assessment of the situation... but only in part.

This blog started when literally things were so bad, we were doing without far more than anything else... and it was about trying to save a thing that allowed us to get through the very hard times by giving us a focus...

Well, I'm happy to say that times aren't that hard any more... and although we are not (and probably won't be for the foreseeable future,) in a position to own a bus... we are in a far better place then when I started blogging.

After a few months of hard thinking and consideration, I have decided that we will give up trying to "get the bus"... but the blog will continue... but now, it's just a blog... nothing more.

In light of this decision, my Thursday Thirteen is...

THIRTEEN BONUS THINGS ABOUT GIVING
UP ON TRYING TO GET "OUR BUS",
RLH 3

#13: I won't hear any more how I'm a "cyber begger" or worse!

Oh man, if I showed you the amount of hate mail and otherwise nasty missives people felt the "need" to send me, you'd weep... luckily, it was far outweighed by well wishes and support... none-the-less, when you kinda "put something out there" that you're already trepidatious about, it is an absolute kick-in-the-you-know-whats to get some of the real vitrolic nastiness that people threw at us... but, if you go "public" with something, you have to be prepared to take a few lumps I 'spose.

#12: A small contingent (including a Toronto Star writer,) is revelling and happy in their victory over the evil that is us!

See the above? It would be an utter lie to say there weren't people ABSOLUTELY hoping for our failure... and boy, they let us know about it... well, enjoy this MASSIVE victory, you happy people... because I ain't stoppin' the blog, just the part about getting an old green bus. If I were you, I'd hold a party... yup! Get cakes, noise-makers, and a banner that says, YAY! THAT FAMILY DIDN'T GET THEIR DREAM TO COME TRUE! YAY! The pride you must feel!

#11: Family and friends (outside really close family and friends,) will finally stop wondering if I'm "alright"!

Oh man... when I talked to Sue about "trying to do this" way back when, we discussed how it would be perceived... and yeah, more than a few long-distance family and acquaintances thought we'd lost it when they found this... oddly enough, however, those closest to us thought it was well worth the effort... and applauded our "try". Still, this is about the few that wondered if a gear had slipped... did you ever stop to think about WHY this came about? About a project to do while we struggled to take our minds off our very big and looming worries? About trying to excite the mind of a young kid? ...or were you too busy passing a quick judgement?

Yeah, thought so.

#10: We'll have closure that wasn't absolutely soul crushing!

There is a chance that RLH 3 will be scrapped... or "carved up beyond restoration" to become a roadside attraction of some sort. To be honest, the chances of one of these fates were far greater than us managing to secure her... and to find out the time we had (and were continuing to invest) was now a 4 by 4 cube of semi-recyclable materials would have been far, far worse... if that ends up being her fate, it will still sting... but somehow, to continue down a losing path towards that end game would seem far worse I think.

#9: It eliminates the mild disappointment one experiences when they don't hear/see anything about their goal on certain occasions.

I'd be lying if I didn't think, every Christmas and birthday since this blog's inception, that there was a SMALL chance that indeed, THIS was the day I'd exit the apartment and find that someone had heard our plea... and of course, it never happened... and most likely never would have... so now, I don't have that VERY mild disappointment during those times.

#8: Although I was hoping to show the youngest kiddollo that "Dreams can come true if you try!" she's now much older and a touch more cynical... and now, this blog COULD have ended up being a wee bit MORE embarrassment for her concerning her legal guardians.

In some ways, this was the hardest one to deal with... and the turning point in me making the decision I did to end the attempts to try and find a way to get "our bus"...

There was a big sparkle in my youngest's eyes when there seemed like a "chance" of us succeeding... she would really be excited... and I wanted SO badly, more than anything, have a hope that "dreams and fantasies" could come true...

Well, she's a bit old now... a little more "with it"... and I sincerely doubt that the arrival of the bus would now be anything other than a bit of a large and public "eyesore" about her uncool stepfather...

So, at least now, I don't have to worry about her "appearance" to her classmates and friends now.

Two years ago, her friends would have been ALL OVER a bus... last year, they would have again, but not with as much gusto... today, no. Not unless it was taking them shopping.

On a bright note, she STILL has two parents that are legit paranormal investigators... so we can maintain the "embarrassment factor" to a goodly degree!

#7: I can now stop worrying that my political posts or "critiques" might alienate the ONE PERSON who might be able to help us.

Believe it or not, I've held back my punches... when I wanted to REALLY let loose and write what I was feeling, I held back... because "goodness forbid" that I offended someone or some company that might have helped us...

Well, that restraint is removed.

It's not like I'm going to go on a ranting tear, but at least I won't be as worried about things now... I'm still a socially responsible, fiscally conservative, environmentally aware, leans-left-of-centre but not too much kinda guy... a moderate... and that's not about to change... so don't expect loads of venom really any time soon... well, with the exception of the twits below...

#6: "Barney" and the rest of the ignorant deniers can stuff a sock in their collective anti-climate-change mouths when it comes to me and the "gas guzzling" bus.

I will say this again... and now it's a "moot issue"... I currently DO NOT OWN A CAR... I take public transport EVERYWHERE... had we gotten the bus, that would not have changed and the bus would have been for STRICTLY family weekends out of town... thereby making it not-as-environmentally unfriendly as these nitwits who think the world would be infinitely better if we polluted MORE.

"Barney" and company... you may now OFFICIALLY shut the hell up and kiss my big backside.

#5: Apparently, my integrity might now have a shot at being restored. (Bwahahahahahaha!!!)

Oh yes, the Crime Scene Investigator types, sorry, I mean the use-to-be-called CSICOP types can now stop thinking that my integrity about my paranormal studies is crud because of this blog.

I respectfully ask that these non-scientific morons go and find "Barney" and his pals above, and take turns jamming socks into each other's enormous and ignorant mouths.

Okay, maybe I am a little more vitriolic without the constraints!

#4: Visitors and readers won't have that icky, Geez, is this really one big commercial??? feeling... oh, and for the record for those that didn't figure it out, no... it never really was.

C'mon now... some of you WERE worried that I was pumping in subliminal messages through this here blog now, weren't you...

Well, Vote Quimby nothing could have Vote Quimby been further from the Vote Quimby truth! We were always Vote Quimby upfront in our objectives and Vote Quimby I enjoyed (and will continue Vote Quimby to enjoy) blogging about Vote Quimby pretty much everything that happens to Vote Quimby cross through my noggin.

#3: MORE SPACE TO DEVOTE TO DOCTOR WHO!!!

KIDDING! (Geez!) Nope, The Doc is strictly Mondays 'round here... and will stay that way... although, for the record, last week's "Doctor Who Monday" was FAR and AWAY the MOST visited post on this blog... especially through hits from mail servers! That's a VERY good thing!

#2: "The Opposite of Love is not Hate... it's Indifference."

...and no one proves this more than many of the advertising, public relations, and marketing people in North America... I must have sent out about a thousand packages in various forms asking for help... either in simple promotion or for our advertising idea or even just to help get our word out there... and received TWO answers... and they were "glib" to say the least.

It was pretty obvious that like the fine folks at Oprah's website and Craigslist (amongst others,) they thought we were some weird "get rich quick" scheme...

Folks, I said it from the start... $20k is "get rich quick"? I'd hope if I really WAS a grifter, I'd aim a TOUCH higher in the monetary rewards department... and I would also hope I'd pick something a little less easy to see for the masses IF I was planning to pull some sort of "scam".

Either way, moot issue now... and to those marketing folks and whatnot... thanks... in most cases... quite literally for nothing.

Oh, and now I can say something else... in relation to the Oprah website and my "incident" there...

You see, according to the moderator, I was posting about a "Get Rich Quick Scheme" and my posts about my family, the bus, and the dream were, and I quote, "devaluing the other posts".

Then other posts... like the "Dream Date with Brad Pitt"... The "shopping trip with Jennifer Anniston"... the "Red Sports Car 'cuz They're Cool!"... the "Buy me a house because I hate my apartment"...

...but a poor family trying to save the rare, antique bus that they used to concentrate on to get through some VERY difficult times... well... that's a cheap, get-rich quick scheme! Delete it IMMEDIATELY!

You see those above words... they really are tame to how I felt and indeed, still feel about the removal on your post where YOU ASKED FOR PEOPLE TO CONTRIBUTE THEIR BIGGEST WISHES.

To be told that giving hope and dreams to my family was a LESS VALUABLE contribution to your message board than the person who wanted a Swedish Hot-Oil Massage from "Doctor McDreamy" made and makes my blood boil... and still does.

#1: New dreams will grow... but now they can return to being private dreams...

My gentle reader may or may not be shocked at how a dream, once pushed into the public eye, can be used as a weapon by some. How people can take something like this and try to use it to cause anger, frustration, and shame...

...the good news is those people really weren't all that successful... it was the kidollo getting older that made me squeal on the breaks here about the dream, not them, but I have learned a lot by doing this...

The first thing is that the majority of people are very supportive when you push a dream into the public eye... and they wish you well and will even help AS they can...

...and that there is a type of person who seems to thrive on ensuring misery... and they are a very hard-working lot who will do whatever it takes to undermine your efforts.

Sadly, I have learned that dreams and wishes should stay private... unspoken... and efforts made quietly.

Now that "our bus" if off the table, we have other dreams... other goals... but the details of them will remain private. Realistically, you folks don't really need to know them... and we don't really need to share them...

Perhaps, in the long run, that's for the best.

Now before leaving this Thursday Thirteen, I need to really get one thing through to everyone... This change in things is NOT a "cry for help" or "attention"... It really wasn't precipitated via only one reason... there were multiple reasons for this change... and the fact that the "magic" of a dream coming true has worn off from the kidollo is really the biggest one.

I consider myself a blogger... and I will continue to blog... and this blog won't change all that much... but the dream is shelved. That's all...

...and honestly, we're doing just fine with everything.

STOP BILL C-61

This message will be at the bottom of all my posts for the next few weeks... perhaps longer...

Helping Hand Thursday - Camelback Displays

Welcome to another edition of one Old Green Bus' "Helping Hand Thursdays" => where has that week gone :p

This week I am having a look at Camelback Displays, which is an online resource for trade show booths, and displays designed to get you some serious attention.

The Camelback Displays website itself is well designed, and definitely extensive. You can get a taste of what I'm talking about by this screen capture of their main page.

Screen shot Camelback Displays

They definitely give you the feeling that they are the experts in trade show displays. There are specific sections for table skirts that are both plain, and/or printed. There is a complete section on banner stands that again is very extensive due to the sheer volume of products they offer.

One section that definitely caught my eye was the one for Pipe and Drape as I have had to work with convention fabric before, and I have to say I was impressed with what I saw.

I would definitely recommend Camelback Displays to anyone who is involved with putting together a trade show display or convention booth.

And so concludes another edition of "Helping Hand Thursday." Only one more day to go until the weekend! B)

Almost Kinda Sorta Wordless Wednesday: Shifting Reasons...

Hey Folks... Tomorrow's post (my Thursday Thirteen) will explain in detail, but there's a rather large shift coming to this blog... (officially tomorrow...) and there's hints about it already here for the "sharp of eye"...

So on that note, and with a wee bit of nostalgia, here's the image that started it all...

...and below is my old "desktop screen shot"...

...which came from the photo below...

Good ol' "RLH 3"... "Our Bus"... The "One Old Green Bus"... We do hope that she finds a good home soon... with someone who'll care for her as much as we had hoped to.

Help set a world record... at SOME point today...

Download Day

I've been using FireFox for a few years now... and even using FireFox "Beta" 3 with no issues... so I'll be downloading the "Official" release version of FireFox 3 at SOME point today... and the fine folks at Mozilla are trying to set a record... so c'mon... if you haven't already, today's the day to download and install FireFox!

Hey, it might be a rare moment to be a part of a world's record!

Update: Addendum - 15:25 EDT: Trying to get to the American servers is like pulling teeth... I'm currently downloading the full package from their European servers... which are moving with continental shift speeds... I should have the full new package down in about an hour... and I'm on high-speed... If you REALLY are interested... Click here and HOPEFULLY you can download from one of their other servers... (It'll still count towards their record... I believe/hope...?)

Update: Addendum - 15:40 EDT: Downloaded, installed... so far, so good.

CANADIANS: The Federal Government has tabled a bill that would turn most of us into criminals.

It makes copying your own DVDs to a video iPod a crime punishable by (up to) a $500.00 fine. It would also mean if you had a professional videographer do an event for you on tape and you "moved" the image to DVD or computer video format, it also would be a $500.00 crime. A kid who "rips" an MP3 from his parents CD collection, re-mixes the tune, and uploads it to YouTube could face a total of $40,500.00 or up to ten years in prison. If you "unlock" your cell phone for use with another provider or for travelling, that could mean a fine of anywhere from $500.00 up to $20,000.00.

Three reasons why I cannot and will not vote Conservative next election...

Let me preface this with the important truth of the matter... I am not "bucking" for a particular political party. I don't wish Canadians to vote New Democrat, Bloc, or Liberal. In fairness, if the three matters below were washed away, I would be VERY happy to support the conservatives equally... despite admittedly turning away from being a "Progressive Conservative" thanks to the new "Right" in Canada and their ignorance and intolerance. Well, that and Provincially, the P.C. Party (loosely related to the Conservative Party on the federal side of things,) is a rolling train-wreck... and our Liberal Premier is more conservative than the head of the P.C. party in some ways... That, and crud like this and those I spoke of here make "conservatism" a really dirty word for me.

Either way, the three acts below are just horrid... and until they are gone, I have become something I never thought I would become... an activist of sorts. I *have* written to my MP... I *have* joined groups and organisations to help get these bills off the table... I am beseeching you folks... my Canadian readers... right now to do something... if you can't agree with all of them, then PLEASE help with the one's you do agree with... because I sincerely doubt that even the most ardent Tory is behind all of the three below... and if they are, so be it... but call it a hunch, there's something (if not all things) in here worth trying to stop...

...so, without further adieu...

Bad - C-51

Worse - C-61

Beyond Dreadful - C-484

Please, if you're Canadian... pick one, two, or all three of these legislations that will probably get bombed through parliament thanks to a weak and vacillating "opposition" that fears an election and won't vote against them... and write to your MP and ask... no, please BEG them not to allow this to happen in Canada.

Click here to find your members' information... and let them know... I refuse to believe... no, I know THIS parliament and it's ruling party do not speak for nor listen to the people of Canada... they MUST be removed from office.

C-51 will make it a crime to grow and dry herbs like garlic at home if you use them for admitted "health benefits". So, if your dried herbs help "thin the blood" and make you feel better, you're no better than a pimp, a drug dealer, or a rapist.

C-61... after some math, if a kid recorded an old song from his parent's CD collection to MP3, modified it or "re-mixed" it, and then uploaded it to YouTube with a homemade video... his maximum fine would be $40,500.00 or a possible ten years in prison. If you copy your professional wedding video from tape to DVD, that's $500.00... Unlock your phone for use abroad? $500.00 up to $20,000.00. Rip a movie or CD onto your iPod? $500.00 per song or movie. If this passes, I just hope that Sue is willing to visit me in prison because, yay verily, I do have some of my CDs copied onto my iFraud for my commutes to work... and yeah, my phone is an American phone from an American provider from a trip I took "way back when"... and I unlocked it to use here. Best get ready to come with the cuffs for me boys... I'm a bad, bad, illegal man.

Oh, and someone has thoughtfully put together an ONLINE FORM that anyone can fill out and send to their MP... Click here... You can even be a hard-nosed Tory and use this form quietly in your own home if you know this bill is really, really bad... and in my opinion and millions like me, it is.

This one's the hardest one... so bear with me...

C-484 is and end run on abortion. Be you pro or con, the laws have been made... but this makes a person who harms an "unborn child" culpable of the harm to that child... no matter what the circumstances are... the tabled legislation is (supposedly) related to a mother who was killed by a crazed boyfriend who thought the child was going to be born as "The AntiChrist"... of course, as tragic as this was, one has to look at the situation and ask what the heck this has to do with ONLY "killing babies", when the mother and baby were the victim? Anyway, this led to a cry out about the rights of a mother and her unborn baby. Sounds okay, until you realise it makes anyone who performs an abortion culpable of murder and therefore chargeable in the eyes of the law as such... If a pharmacist or nurse gives a person who had unprotected sex the "morning after pill", they could be charged as murderers... This law will drive abortions back into the back-alleys and insure that many unwanted children or children brought about by nefarious means are forced into their mother's arms... willing or not. We THOUGHT the laws in Canada were done... but a (sorry, but this is how it is,) Christian zealot member of parliament is licking his fingers in glee that he will wreck years of progress with treatments and, more importantly, education about parenthood and family... and force HIS (and a minority's) views down all our throats... I hate like heck pointing a finger towards a faith like that, but it is the case... and in a touch of irony, the "crazed boyfriend" said in court that it was Jesus who told him to murder his girlfriend and the baby... More ironic is that even if this law existed when this tragedy occurred, it would not have prevented the act that supposedly brought the law it into being.

I have to be honest though... I am NOT a fan of late-term abortion... not at all... and do think that late term abortions should only be considered when the mother's life is at risk. Heck, I'm not really a fan of abortion in general... I am a FIRM believer (and much prefer) sex education, proper birth control, and planning parenthood properly... and yes, I believe in "The Morning After Pill".

That said, the concept of driving abortion back underground is too awful to contemplate.

To even introduce a set of laws that would toss those people in hospitals and clinics into jail is dumb... that, and I could never support dung like this.

Please consider this a "beg"... if you DON'T agree with any or all of the above, realise two important facts... Firstly, these are my opinions and I have not gone into them with my eyes closed. Secondly, all the fighting, fussing, "quoting", scare tactics, horrific photos, and whatnot will not alter my views... trust me when I say this... The BEST of the opposing side have tried and failed... so please don't preach AT me... If we disagree, that's fine... then move on... this is for people that read one, two, or all of the above that DO feel the same way... and I know I'm not alone.

...all three of the above bills will come to be unless WE take action.

Contact your MP (PLEASE) and ask them to work to strike down these bills.. or the ones above you don't believe in... or, if you think they're wonderful, fantastic... we don't agree, but fine... I'm not asking people for a "strike" against YOU... just those who feel and think like me... or close to it... or perhaps on only ONE of the above or so bills...

I believe in "Vox Populi"... and ask, if you see the inequity in these bills, you will act upon my advice.

Doctor Who Monday: Now if everyone could just keep talking at once...

So, the planet of Midnight has come and gone... and Rod Serling did a VERY gentle roll in his casket recognising a bit of his own work being used here... None-the-less, it was a good program, not "GREAT!", but good... and managed to take the most annoying small-child activity and make it kinda spooky. Points for that...

And while watching it, you had to feel a lot of sympathy for Lesley Sharp who's dialogue and script must have been ginormous.

This was a "Donna Lite" (little to no appearance of companion Donna Noble) episode as the next one is a "Doctor Lite" episode... they USUALLY do a "non-Doctor" episode each season (an episode in which The Doctor is in it for perhaps four or five minutes tops) to allow them to shoot another episode with the "main players" simultaneously... Think about "The LIN'DA Episode" and "Blink"... neither show had a whole lot of the usual main players in 'em... that's why... In this case, it's safe to assume that "Midnight" and next week's programs were shot at the exact same time with two different film units. Double your episodes for double your fun!

The show did a 37.8% Share of the Viewing Audience in Britain. Not too shabby!

...and as much as I enjoyed this show, next week has us ALL in a tizzy... because next week, Rose Tyler returns.

Now, I know I promised NO intentional spoilers, but saying "Rose is returning" I see as the equivalent in "spoilerific" verbiage to telling someone seeing the movie "Titanic" that, in the end, the ship hits and iceberg and sinks. This has been an obvious return from pretty much Canary Wharf forward.

One thing to help some of the viewing audience though... and this could be a RED HERRING... but non-Coronation Street fans may need to know who Vera Duckworth is/was to get one possible reference you MIGHT hear on this program.

NEWS ITEMS: Making Th'Rounds...

From Planet Gallifrey: You may soon call him SIR Russell T. Davies.

Well, it's no mystery that (believe it or not,) Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II is a Whovian... but I'm pretty sure OBE's (of which, I expect my own shortly...) are actually dished out by parliament and then approved by Her Majesty... Still, remember when knights were made because they rode into battle on horseback with sword drawn? Yup... now you can be a good TV writer and get the same thing. Should I meet soon-to-be Sir Russell, I will ask him if penning a script is akin to slaying dragons.

Thanks to Sylvester McCoy's Unofficial Website: Loved the episode, but a "spin off" show would blow... Don't do "Jenny Who" please! (Scroll down a bit to see the reference if you click on this link...)

Seriously, this will not work... or at least, really seems dreadful on the prima facia... I think Jenny would make a boffo "companion"... a touch violent, in need of "Time Lord Training" but being a bit thick... yada-yada-yada... but a "stand alone" program??? No... Honest, no...

Wired Magazine's even covered this... "And, yes -- in case you were wondering -- should the Jenny pilot take flight, Moffett would be the first Doctor's Daughter (Peter Davison is her father...) to play the Doctor's Daughter, to date The Doctor (currently courting David Tennant, above), and to star in her own Doctor Who spin-off as The Doctor's Daughter. That whole deal never gets old."

Granted, had you told Sue and I we would be madly in love with a police procedural program where the main character has a severe head-trauma and in his coma (or is he???) he finds himself solving crimes in 1973... none-the-less, we do.

Thanks to Sylvester McCoy's Unofficial Website: Russell T. Davies Names Fave Guest Star - Shock! It's Kylie Minogue!

I know I'm agog. Bowled over. Startled. Gobsmacked. ...and sarcastic.

Thanks to Sylvester McCoy's Unofficial Website: Torchwood Mini-Season will be on BBC1 Yeah, they're movin' on up!

I want North American fans in particular to digest this...

BBC 1 will be showing a five-show mini-series of Torchwood starting on a Monday and ending on a Friday on ONE WEEK.

It is also assumed that after the "sampler season" (this coming after two full legit seasons,) will simply make fans of the show salivate harder... turning into zombies and attacking BBC Wales. It'll be ugly...

From SyFy Portal: And the Emmy goes to...

"Doctor Who" picked up six nominations, including Best Actor/Television for David Tennant, Best Actress/Television for Freema Agyeman, Best Episode/Television for "Blink" and Best Series/Television.

"Torchwood" earned five nominations including Best Actor/Television for John Barrowman and Best Actress/Television for Eve Myles.

Thanks to many sources (Sylvester McCoy's Unofficial Website cited): Mysterious Episode 12, Season Four Named: The Stolen Earth Expect Dalek-ee Goodness and I believe Sue will be very happy...

WARNING! Reading more about this news item WILL LEAD TO POSSIBLE SPOILERS!

One "spoiler" I couldn't stay away from myself was a photo... of two players... and my hints for those wondering would be D____s and a R__ D___k. It made me just go "Squeal!" like a school girl. The next (and last for this season) THREE episodes of "Who" are going to be FAN-TAS-TIC!

Addendum: Yeah, it's a link to a spoiler... but The Sun is the one spoiling... don't want a hint at things to come? Don't click here.

Blog Your Blessings Sundays: Dads

I will never forget the evening of December 7th, 24 years ago this December... I was lying in bed when I heard Mom scream... within a few hours, the doctors told us we had lost my father.

Today is Father's Day... and I'm not going to blog about my blessing... I'm going to try and use myself to perhaps spur a blessing for you.

My father passed when I was seventeen... a precocious and rather immature/rebellious seventeen. I never got to "work on a car with dad"... or "talk to dad about working life"... or even find out a whole lot about dad in any way, shape, or form... a massive and sudden heart attack removed that option for me almost twenty-four years ago.

My blessing... is for you... if you have a father, don't take him for granted. Spend time with him... find out about him... learn from him... love him... because when that option is taken from you, you realise what a huge blessing you had without ever really knowing it.

How I would practically kill to be able to be councilled by him now... or even just have a "man-to-man" talk with my dad... to find out if he'd approve of my career choice... I have a feeling he would be less than happy with the "bus" thing (he was an eminently practical man,) but if I had succeeded, he'd be there enjoying the "mucking about" to make it work while having a façade of "What a Waste of Time"... I do remember that that was his way. The very serious tinged with a wee sense of fun.

...but I don't have that.

So my blessing is to you who still have dads... and that is to enjoy and appreciate your fathers... and on this day, spend some time with them... and think about how great a good dad can be.

I can't believe I have to do this, but for those who's fathers had issues or were not great, I am sorry... I am so sorry... but I really cannot and will not do two posts to address that not all fathers are good... and although I sympathise with your issue, I ask that you understand a couple of things...

1: Most dads are okay... and although your dad may not have been, please do not take the wind out of other's sails on a day like today. Some of us were fond of our fathers... even when they had faults.

2: Today is a celebration of fathers... all of them... and this post nor my feelings are being put forward in any way to upset or cause you strife of any shape. It is what it is... and I'm sorry if you disagree.

Just wanted to get that out... and hope that comments to this, if they need to be negative, are tailored to understand these points. We in no way wish to minimise certain people's experiences, but there is a time and place for certain sentiments...

Feet of clay...

Newsflash... People are human. Okay, this post SO doesn't correspond to probably ninety per-cent of my faithful readers, so let me set the table for the newbies...

"Blogger A" is a humour blogger. He's funny. He flirts. He's charming. Because of this, "Blogger A" gains fans... a small collective in the blogsphere of which I'm an acknowledged lurker... "Blogger A" becomes close to many... especially "Blogger B", a woman/fan of "Blogger A" who things take off with.

...sum up... disaster. Relationship fizzles with spectacular and very semi-public results... with many "hurt feelings" amongst this small circle... and many people siding on either "Blogger A" side (mostly fans) and also on "Blogger B" side (sympathy for the hurt).

Either way, you would assume reading some of the comments and posts about this that somehow, the entire "blogsphere" was in an uproar...

Truth: Nope. It isn't. Only this very small circle is licking it's collective wounds... which, in my eyes, shouldn't exist in the first place. The wounds these people suffer are really of their own design... they are masters of their own misfortune.

In fact, many of the level headed types in this small circle kinda know this.

POINT: Guess what folks? On the internet, things aren't always as they appear... and yeah, people misrepresent themselves... or, in this case...

1: Do not get the truth about their personas "out there" and people feel crumby when push comes to shove.

2: People don't hide... but in a fierce set of fandom or otherwise just the desire to like certain people, other's will happily delude themselves.

Both of the above are probably more accurate than anything... and for my second newsflash, the incident I'm speaking to is ABSOLUTELY not the first time I've seen/read/heard of things like this happening... and I can guarantee, it won't be the last.

Blogging allows people to really push out their private lives... this makes certain folks rather vulnerable about things "online"... but perhaps they should reign in things... and perhaps, this small circle has just learned a valuable lesson that some of us old-online types (I've had a web-presence online since 1995 and used FidoNet and even ArpaNet... and was a regular in certain NNTP news groups...) have known for a while.

Rule One: Only put online what you'd be willing to publish in your local newspaper.

Look through this entire blog... it's been here for over two years... and tell me the name of ANY of my steplings. Go ahead... Try...

Notice something?

What's the name of the company I work for? What specifically do I do for them? Sure, they're in Toronto... but where? How long have Sue and I been together? What was the name of ANY of my past girlfriends... friends... mother... sisters... Can you find 'em?

...nope. You can't. You can get "glimpses" of my "offline" life, but not at all close to even half of the things I'm up to.

To be honest, reading this blog actually only gives the reader about 15% of my life... no more... and no less. You get only what I'm willing to give.

This is intentional. It's not me "holding back" or being "closed"... it's just that I've learned that if people THINK they know you 100%, they will form attachments and more importantly, opinions... that may not live up to expectations.

You folks, my regular readers, are friends, yes... but you're acquaintances really. I'm kinda glad you don't know everything about me... I'm pretty sure you should be glad about this too.

More than anything, when looking at the posts and comments about this "global blogsphere disaster", you realise that there's the key... people are more "disappointed" than anything else. They are upset that their precious belief and faith in what they "knew" to be true was not accurate... and that indeed, people are human... mistakes made... trouble happens... and it sucks.

...and still, there's outrage. It's as if the bloggers in question intentionally wounded some of these people. I can say with some assurance of being correct... this is NOT the case.

"Blogger A" and "Blogger B" suffer most... people DIRECTLY (in real life) suffer next... and yet, so many "online" are hoisting this issue onto their shoulders as if it's THEIR load to bear. Is it? Does being an "online friend" or "online fan" give you this entitlement?

Either way, if I may be allowed to sum up the whole thing...

Online friends... heck, even online idols... are still people... and fall prey to the caprices that humans do. They may "appear" in one sense... but are you so sure that is who they are... or are you placing your own veneer on someone you can't fully know because it suits your philosophy...?

Can you "hate" or even be angry at these people? Only if it DIRECTLY impacted your day-to-day REAL life... otherwise, like a television program you're watching, you can either change what you're looking at... or turn the damned thing off.

You SHOULD have real-life, flesh-and-blood folks around... you shouldn't need to live vicariously online through distant acquaintances... and if you do, get up, open the door, and take a stroll... remind yourself of what is real, good, and yes, even bad about YOUR world... not the world of others.

To that circle of people... and I know I've made some of you angry if you've read this... please understand, this is just a caring acquaintance saying that this is not real to most of you... and should not spur this much emotion. These people aren't coming to your home... and perhaps, that is for the best.

Take "online life" as it should be taken... an escape for a moment from real life... but in no way a substitute for it.

...and those heroes of the blogsphere... they're human... and they will make mistakes and occasionally do really awful things... but you're not married to them yourself... and they aren't going to be sharing a bowl of popcorn on the couch watching a DVD with you tonight... and therefore, should not be THAT important to you.

Lastly, if you're thinking of making any "life altering" decisions based on internet acquaintances, realise that you probably know about as much about them as you do about me... and that's not a good amount of data to base a life on.

Hate me if you will for this... tell me that this case is "different"... tell me that I don't "understand"... and I'll simply parrot what I've said above.

Been there, seen this, bought the T-Shirt, ripped the sleeves off, Tie-Dyed it, and now see it as the same-old rags I've got lying around for various chores.

The recent situation is not unique... and it won't be the last time you hear of someone or even know someone who experiences the same thing.

In closing, if the joke, Life! That sounds cool! Where can I download one of those? is appropriate to your existence... then you don't deserve my wrath... you don't deserve my lecture... you do, however, deserve a bit of sympathy.

There's a pretty cool world out there in "Real Life"... experience it... and base not thyself on blogging idols and online friends.

They almost never measure up to the high standards you expect of them.

You SURE you want bloggers to help? I dunno...

While purusing SlashDot, I came across a story where Republican presidential candidate, Senator John McCain, is beseeching bloggers to blog on his behalf.

Although I don't doubt the man's sincerity nor fault him for using every advertising possibility to his advantage, I cannot state that I believe this is a good idea.

Although there are notable and excellent bloggers that are for McCain and are subtle and well thought out, the majority of "right wing" bloggers out there probably should not "help" their party is possible.

I won't go into gory details, but let's look at a recent case where a well known American "conservative" blogger suffered pain, horror, and grievous injury because an actress (with an AmeroEuropean background,) was featured on a commercial for a well known American doughnut outlet wearing a scarf that resembled one that might, on occasion, be worn by people from the Middle East... and even though millions (probably billions) of people wear said style of scarf of which it is right to assume only some are "bad guys", she screamed You're making me think of terrorists! and whammo, the doughnut chain yanked the commercials.

Not only was this scary stupid, but truly made the blogger, the doughnut stores, and indeed America look like a knee-jerk laughing stock in the eyes of most of the world.

"Most of us" (read: Non-Americans) saw this as being the same as saying, Charles Manson listened to the Beatles... and your radio station plays the Beatles... and it makes me think of mass murder! Take that music off the air now!

This is who you want "supporting your cause"?

This is one example... there are many others... Even in Canada, some of the more fervent "right wingers" are so horrible in their racist screeds that a handful of them are being (justifiably) sued... and many of them may be "tempted" to come in and support McCain too from abroad.

Now, DON'T GET ME WRONG... there are a handful of "just as bad" left-wing bloggers who's words can be more than a little pointed... and who would do more harm than foul to the Democrat's (or Liberals/New Democratic Party's) chances if their words got main play in the media or whatever...

...but for some odd reason, the "conservative" cause has bred some of the most foul, racist, intolerant, and genuinely intellectually challenged bloggers I've ever seen. I have to admit that too... yup... far more "Right-Wing" horrors than "Left Wing" stupidity online.

...but to the case at hand.

Allow me to make a suggestion to those people who might consider taking Senator McCain up on his idea...

If you believe that Natives should be ground into the dirt... If you believe that all Muslims are dangerous... If you have legitimate "hate" in your soul for a religion, belief, or a race of people... If you think that "The Left" is going to drag America into the mud... If you think racism is okay because it's "funny" or "true"... If you figure the rest of the world is "envious" of America and that's what's caused the rift... If you think the world would be a better place if everyone had a handgun...

Help support John McCain and the republicans... DON'T blog on his behalf. You will push people away in droves.

(Hat tip to Brett Lamb for the above...)

Stay tuned as I may have to do a similar entry for Democratic (or left wing) bloggers if they are "called upon".

Thursday Thirteen: Films I thought were really bad...

THURSDAY THIRTEEN!

Some of the below, you will agree with... some you may not... but this is a personal thing.

Basically, I've seen more than a few films lately... and so was inspired to be a bit of a Roger Ebert and list...

THIRTEEN MOVIES I SAT THROUGH
WHERE I WISH I COULD GET A VOUCHER
TO RECLAIM MY TIME AT SOME POINT.

In order of least personally offensive to most putrid.

As a caveat before getting started, these are MY opinions... and in no way might represent yours... and if you really liked, loved, or were less hostile to ANY of the titles below, that's MORE than cool... but allow me to now vent my personal spleen...

#13: INDIANA JONES AND THE KINGDOM OF THE CRYSTAL SKULL

Let's do the math... Spielburg + Lucas + Ford + GREAT Series + Fond Memories = ???

Apparently, it equals being REALLY let down. This had all the suspense of watching a "video pong" tournament. Add to this an ending which should have come with the theatre either offering victims the audience barf bags or insulin. It wasn't HORRENDOUSLY dreadful... but a complete let down.

#12: STAR WARS: EPISODE ONE - THE PHANTOM MENACE

Speaking of let downs... is there ANYONE that didn't want to see Jar-Jar Binks killed by being smooshed under a dead bantha??? Anyone??? Again, it wasn't horrible... but it sure as heck wasn't good.

#11: SUBURBAN COMMANDO

If you didn't see this... imagine Shelly "Olive Oyl" Duvall as the loving wife of Christopher "Jim from Taxi" Lloyd and toss in Hulk Hogan as a warrior from another planet... Comedy ensues? Um... no. It didn't. Pain... yes, pain ensued... much pain.

#10: LIAR, LIAR

Jim Carrey plays a semi-sleazy lawyer and horrible father who ends up with a curse and can only speak the truth. I believe Carrey said, under this curse, I read the script and felt nauseated... but then they told me what they would pay and...

#9: SESSION NINE

Sue and I love a good horror film... this wasn't one.

After reading "rave" reviews about it, we rented it... and wished we'd invested the money in something more fun... like alcohol to rub in our eyes and some tinfoil to chew on. What was highly amusing was seeing the DVD extras with an "alternative ending"... which seemed to confirm what we suspected... they were making it up as they went along... and doing a poor job of it.

#8: SEE NO EVIL, HEAR NO EVIL

NO! NO! NO! NO! Gene Wilder and Richard Pryor were a great team... Stir Crazy and even Silver Streak were comedy gold... but they pushed it too far with this one. I saw a French film about a year or so before based on the same premise (blind guy is friends with a deaf guy who are wanted for a crime they didn't commit... and the "pursuits" and "escapes" were hillarious,) and sadly, because Richard Pryor at that point was really quite ill, it became VERY unfunny... tragic really... it was difficult to watch, let alone enjoy.

#7: BLUE MONKEY

OH THIS WAS BAD!!!

This was a "We Didn't Pay... MONEY... To See It" but we paid in other ways... an ATROCIOUS horror film done here in Toronto that didn't feature really anything "monkey-like" or even blue. We sat through it because we like the location (the former Lakeshore Psych Hospital in Toronto) but the only thing we came away from this movie with was a new "phrase"... Is it Blue Monkey bad?

#6: BEST OF TIMES

Kurt Russell... Robin Williams... dreadful script... no laughs... bad film... oh God... I paid to see this in a theatre... I believe I needed medical care afterwords with an odd combination of severe hyper-tension for money wasted AND atrophied limbs from the numbness I experienced watching this turkey.

#5: ROBIN HOOD: PRINCE OF THIEVES

This should be on everyone's list... Kevin Costner plays Robin of Idaho, Morgan Freeman plays a character that was never in any of the legends you heard of... but it allowed them to cast Morgan Freeman, Christian Slater plays a whiny Will Scarlet who's about as life-filled as the average cadaver... and about as much fun to watch... and finally, the most onerous issue... a true waste of the GREAT Alan Rickman as The Sheriff of Nottingham... I feel that either Rickman's best stuff is STILL on a cutting room floor somewhere... or he didn't read the script before signing the contract.

#4: BIG BUSINESS

I paid to see this in a theatre too... oh the pain.

Bette Midler and Lily Tomlin are great actresses... this was NOT a great film. A play on Prince and the Pauper with Bette and Lily playing sisters who are (a) Wealthy Socialites (b) Country Hicks. Circumstances bring them together... and... I wish they hadn't.

#3: MICKEY + MAUDE

ANOTHER THEATRE MOVIE... which makes me weep.

What's more fun than watching the late Dudley Moore be a bigamist with Amy Irving and Ann Reinking? What? What's that you say? Root canal? Open-Heart Surgery? Repeated blows to the head with a lead pipe? Yup... that would be more entertaining... and preferable in many ways.

#2: MARIE ANTOINETTE

Is there anything more entertaining than watching Sofia Coppola admiring herself (in a naughty way,) in a mirror for a couple of hours? WHY YES! PRETTY MUCH EVERYTHING IS BETTER THAN THIS FILM! Kirsten Dunst mugs and models as Marie Antoinette... um, wait a second... Kirsten Dunst mugs and models in period costume. That is all.

Remember the eighties? Like the music? Wanted to hear it via sting quartet? GOOD NEWS! This might be your movie!

As a comme ça historian, I can assure readers this will introduce you to the real-life Marie Antoinette as looking at a can of Campbell's Soup will introduce you to Andy Warhol.

I thought, when I heard it was ACTUALLY shot in the palace in Versailles that there'd be some scenery eye candy... but the burning pain from watching Sid and Nancy* any of the actors on screen kinda ruined that.

By the end of this film, I really, Really, REALLY wanted to see the execution... which of course, you don't get to see. I really needed closure... violent, bloody closure... to end that pain.

* - "Sid and Nancy" was a fantastic film... and Gary Oldman is a God... but imagine "Sid and Nancy" set in Revolutionary France... with no intelligence, sense of purpose, worse music, and no true thought involved. That would be this film.

#1: FIRST KNIGHT

TEH WORSTEST MOVIE EVAH. Period.

Waste of the GREAT Sean Connery playing a lame-duck King Arthur... and Richard Gere playing Sir Lancelot of New Jersey. I cannot begin to describe the multiple FAIL this movie was... There are more than a few people I've seen online who thought it was a "spoof"... but it wasn't. You know the repeated blows to the head I mentioned a couple of entries above? WAY better than sitting through this dreadful, awful, wretched, just-plain-bad film.

Randominium...

Want a good tip to prevent a house break-in while you're on vacation? Putting timers on lights is one thing... putting a timer on a video monitor or TV is another. The good B&E guys look for "unusual and generic" behaviour... and a light simply turning on and off means squat. Most people, however, do watch TV or surf online during the evening... so timing a "monitor" or the like to "flash" on at say 8:30pm through 11:30pm is much better than a light-bulb firing off at that hour.

Is it just me, or is the ability of the hard-right wing bloggers to realise their full accountability for their racist, sexist, and ill-informed verbiage... and the harm they are doing to the concept of conservative values? I'm beginning to wonder if certain elements are actually "liberal plants" to make other right-wingers look like buffoons and morons based on these utterly ludicrous weenies ridiculous antics. If you support a cause, why ASSUME you speak for everyone and make that cause a laughing stock (in one recent case, globally!) you're HURTING it... not helping it. I'd say the same about the "hard left" bloggers... but I gotta be honest, they just do not compare... granted, allow me to add the word "yet". Time will tell if in a few months, I reverse this outlook.

Two second film reviews...
Iron Man = Very Good...
New Indy = Very Disappointing.

Ahhh! Ahhh! Ahhh! Won't ANYONE think about the CHILDREN!?!?!?

H/T to Kill the Body and the Head Will Die

So, I'm pretty much moving away from MySpace... and keeping FaceBook and focusing (personally, as always,) on the ol' blog here. It's nothing against MySpace as such, but I don't have time to keep updating three "personal social things" online... and MySpace lost the coin toss.

How to use one thing that was a nasty thing to your advantage... I often wondered what the world is like for the majority of Muslims in the world who are not extremists... because thanks to the whack-jobs that profess to be "true Muslim" and the hyperbole and spin that certain media puts on everything... they must feel like they are walking targets... and in my eyes, (and most people with an IQ over 30,) they aren't.

Is it wrong? There's a blogger who once said VERY nice things about my efforts here a year or so ago... but recently, I notice I post something here, then one or two weeks later, it appears on his blog without any kind of nod or hat tip... in fact, it's all original to him! (...and has to be the coincidences of all coincidences if this was hapchance and circumstance,) I know it's petty... but is it wrong to be just a little miffed about this? Y'know, thinking if he ever did have an original thought, it would die of loneliness in his noggin???

Doctor Who Mondays - Hey! Who turned out the lights?

(Remember, no intentional spoilers here...) Well, we seen it... the "Forest of the Dead"... Season 4 episode 9... and it was much better in my eyes than the lead up episode, "Silence in the Library". As I said in my first "Doctor Who Monday", I wasn't as big a fan of the episode as I should have been... mostly because of the hype (OH AND THERE WAS HYPE) leading into it... I was prepared to have my socks blown off... and was simply well entertained.

Then again, I should have realised that Steven Moffat would equal "Goodly Stuff" after The Empty Child, The Doctor Dances, Girl in the Fireplace, Time Crash, and Blink... not to mention "The Curse of the Fatal Death"!

Okay, that last one is NOT really "from the new series", but what a GREAT "short"!

Never seen it? Need a giggle??

Parte The Firste...

Parte The Seconde...

Parte The Thirde...

Parte The Fourthe...

Anyway, if you're a "Who" fan, these four YouTuber Vids are well worth sitting through... I'd bet my Dalek bumps on it!

Anyway, this past Saturday's episode did a WHOPPING 40% share of the UK television audience when it aired... which is both deserved and astounding!

I'm looking forward to listening to the podcast about the show on my commute today!

MUST GET "TIME CRASH" SET. Yes, I must...

Sure, I STILL need to get a K-9... and a full-sized new-series Dalek from these guys...

...but a "Time Crash" set AND a Master with two, NOT ONE BUT TWO Toclafane... (*sigh*)

PROOF! I can pronounce it... (Click play below...)

Now, do I win "Geek of the Week" award for this or wot?

DID YOU KNOW? According to "Sci-Fi Channel" in the states, Torchwood does better numbers in the ratings than "Doctor Who". It's true...

Now, no knock to Cap'n Jack and crew, but when I heard this, I had to scratch my head...

Torchwood is a lot more "adult"... and when I say that, I mean it has graphic sexuality and gore... story-wise, it's the same... if not a little (just a touch) weaker as it's nailed to one location and "Who" is not...

Doctor who has, in my and many other's opinions, a better story line with more possibilities and has a broader range of appeal to fans... because kids and adults really do enjoy the show together.

...and in it's native UK, the opposite is true with "Who" often being in the top-twenty rated programs of the week and Torchwood doing respectably numbers... but not the same.

I submit to you... is it because John Barrowman has an American accent and is therefore a little easier on the sensibilities of the folks in the States... or is he just that much more dead sexy than David Tennant?

Well, in my house... my Wife chose Barrowman... but the girls are faithful to Tennant on a vote of two to three with one abstaining. (The eldest prefers Eccleston... but if push came to shove, prefers Tennant over Barrowman.)

Me, I prefer Freema Agyeman... but no one asks me anyway.

NEWS ITEMS: Making Th'Rounds...

From Outpost Gallifrey: Fans flock to Shakespeare - Let's hope without dumbass costumes...

Tickets are selling fast for the Royal Shakespeare Company's production of Hamlet staring David Tennant in the title role and Patrick Stewart as Claudius.

The season, which runs from 24 July until 15 November 2008, at the Courtyard Theatre, is almost sold out before rehearsals have even begun. The website seatchoice.com reports that the show is the fourth hottest ticket in the United Kingdom, beating West End blockbusters such as Hairspray.

Hamlet is pencilled in for a London run following the season in Stratford.

Now, I have a LOT of faith in Doctor Who (and Star Trek) fans... but I am reminded of a story about Mark Hamel (of Luke Skywalker fame) doing the Broadway show of The Elephant Man... apparently, on opening night, the entire front-row was dressed in various Star Wars costumes... this must have felt awful for Mr. Hamel... let's hope The Doctor and Jean Luc don't go through the same.

From Outpost Gallifrey: Cap'n Jack Officially BACK!

TV Guide is reporting that John Barrowman has been signed up for Torchwood Series Three.

The site says the series will begin filming in August for transmission on BBC1 next Spring. So far only five episodes have been confirmed, which will consist of a five part story to be shown over one week.

...and if you listen, very carefully... no matter where you are on the planet... you can hear my steplings (ALL OF 'EM) and my wife going "WOOT!"... although you can also discern the deep and gutteral mutterings of Better be more than five blinking shows coming up!

Wonder if Russell T. Davies is still going to be involved with Torchwood now that he's said his goodbyes to The Doctor?

Confirmation... if needed...

From Sylvester McCoy's Unofficial Site: Electra Complex Anyone? Incest in Whoville!

David Tennant (10th Doc) dating Georgia Moffett, Peter Davison's (5th Doc) daughter!

Okay, Georgia Moffett is a stone fox... but man, does this make future "Doctor's Daughter" episodes a wee bit... well... um...

Seriously, I think they do make a lovely couple... and I do hope this SOLIDIFIES David Tennant as playing The Doctor beating Tom Baker and Jon Pertwee's tenure combined!

...and yeah, I like "The Doctor's Daughter"... and hope that Jenny returns!

Here's one link to the story from SMUS... there's about four other sources listed there too... even a slightly less tabloid-ee one.

Blog Your Blessing Sundays: Homecoming...

I'm not sure if I've mentioned how much I love my Sue... my family... my pets... my home.

Like all healthy couples, we argue... heck, we've had some verbal slobber-knockers... but in the end, it's always love and hugs.

Why I bring this up is a blessing that literally occurred to me on Friday on my commute home...

My commute, via public transit, is about an hour each way... stretching an eight-hour day into a ten hour day... often longer... and my job, though computer related, usually has me lifting things (for example, printers... which the ones we use are about fifty-pounds each,) parts, instruments, and all... then there's the internal stuff which has me diving under desks, working with wires and all... and of course, like all computer folks, hours of sitting at a desk as well... usually watching blue-bars advance across a screen as software installs and/or copies.

...so one hour (plus a bit) to come in to do that.

...then one hour to get home...

The bright point, as I would assume it is for most folks, is indeed, walking in the door.

First of all, "The Boys" (our two dogs) greet me... not with barking (they recognize my "sounds" coming up to and at the door,) but with tails wagging and acting as if my entry into the house heralds the dawning of a new and brighter existence for all of humanity. If non-dog owners wonder why us dog owners are such passionate people about our pets, try coming into a house with this absolute unconditional love and affection... just 'cuz you're there.

Next is Sue... usually with a warm hug, a kiss, a brief inquiry about my day, and then usually the announcement of the evening's meal.

Sadly, the kidollo, being a tween, is usually less then spectacular with a quick greeting followed by a laundry list of things she needs fixed, done, or money for... but hey, she's a kid... and really, this isn't usually the only thing... she occasionally gives me news of her school day, an update on her friends, and as a rule, is a generally happy soul.

So, coming in... with limited exceptions, consists of a lot of warmth, love, attention, and effection.

...that, somehow, makes the day seem that much more worthwhile.

As of present, I've never really been away from Sue (or home) more than a day or two tops, so my reference may not seem all that spectacular... but bear with me if you will because...

My blessing today is coming home...

I realize there are people who's lives take them away from home for weeks, months, even years at a time... but when you see the blessing of even a ten-hour absence, it does remind one of the sweetness of returning... and how, for those people, it must literally be ten-fold as sweet.

This doesn't take away from my own "homecomings" though... which is something I believe most of us experience in some fashion... and it is an unbridled, if often overlooked blessing.

Have I mentioned how much I love my home?

Not all television is created equal... at least, in our house...

Many of you have noticed me, over the last few months, trying to bolster the enthusiasm towards our favourite sci-fi/drama program here on the ol' blog... to the point where I was nicely asked to "cool it" by a few readers and have now given it it's own day here on Mondays only... which is what's preventing me from even naming it now. (Hey! I made a promise, I'll stick to it!)

That said, because of this, I've taken a (very small) bit of grief over why I don't "enthuse" about what surely must be my OTHER favourite programs...

...like the new Battlestar Galactica.

Well, perhaps it's a bias because like the sci-fi/drama program mentioned above, I was a "fan" as a young'un of the original show... and Lorne Greene, being Canadian, was a bit of a hero of mine... that said, I have to be honest... the REAL reason I have yet to sit down and watch this absolutely stunningly acclaimed show is that... we don't have cable and don't get a chance to see it.

Oh, I know, I could break the laws of the land, but I honestly DO avoid doing that when possible and we have made a "mental note" that cable will be restored at some point in the future...

I assure ALL the fans of this program, we WILL be giving it a shot shortly... promise... but since we have friends in strange places, we do get our favourite sci-fi/drama without question sent to us... but unfortunately, we don't have friends in BSG land... but it's on our "To Rent/To Find" list.

...then there's Lost.

Now, get ready to hate me... we HAVE sat through a trio of shows of this as it's on a local station we "pick up" without cable... and... well... I really am not a fan of it's narrative approach. I know it's supposed to be intentionally disjointed with many curves and swerves, but the three shows we watched just made us go, "Hunh?" and we were done.

Did we give it a fair shake? Probably not... and as I was told back when I thought I didn't like The X-Files (the first five shows I saw really were awful... and I was consistently told "Oh! You saw THAT episode??? That was not one of the good ones... You really should try to watch more!", but after FIVE bad shows, how many chances do you give something? Luckily, with X-Files, I did give it another go and yeah, I just had really bad luck on the first five I saw,) the Lost shows I saw were the "weakest" ones...

Will we give it a shot? Right now, I lean to the words, "Not Likely", but you never know... perhaps a friend or something will sit down and show me a couple of "stronger" episodes and love will come.

Now, we are fans of Dexter... and looking forward to the new offerings... but House, Grey's Anatomy, any of the CSI franchise or the Law and Order franchise... with the exceptions of the first forty-seven years of the latter named original program, we're not big on any of 'em... House has it's appeal... Grey's Anatomy, for us, doesn't... CSI is like a loud music video that, if you do any study of actual police techniques, will raise your blood pressure over the request to suspend disbelief... other than that...

Interesting to mention "Grey's Anatomy" here... when introducing the eighteen-year-old to our aforementioned sci-fi/drama programm it started off being "not as good" as Grey's Anatomy... then "almost as good" by her third show... then she stayed up to finish the whole first and second season in a sitting... and the next day, watched the third. I asked, "So, is it now better than Grey's Anatomy?"... she didn't answer... but absconded with all of the mentioned episodes we had of our fave sci-fi/drama program and the two current seasons of Torchwood to boot!

So, this is out viewing habits... and why, indeed, although we're fans of one sci-fi/drama program and not the other's most people talk about...

...at least, so far.

P.S. - I know, I haven't mentioned Heroes either in this post... someone gave us the first two seasons and again, no time to watch it... but we will... promise!

NEW TOY!!!

Sue is so gonna kill me... maybe... but I'm gonna try and flog it as a belated super-birthday gift.

Yup, I'm gettin' a wee case of THE WIND!

MSI Wind

Yup, that's right... an MSI Wind notebook! (...and reading this, you'd wonder if I worked for MSI... which I don't... honest!)

The notebook/laptop/whatever is wee. Very wee. Impossibly wee...

...but it's getting very good reviews.

Basically, it's MSI's answer to the Asus Eee PC which I did want at one point, but the MSI is, in my estimation and after reading reviews and specs, a better unit.

So, I caved in... and under my company's "purchase plan" (read: Comes off the ol' paycheque a little at a time,) I'm investing a touch over $400.00 Canadian to get the Linux version of the unit to play with test on a personal level to see if it's appropriate for use with my company's sales force on the road.

I know you're shocked, but I'm getting the black one... mostly because, as stated, black is my colour of choice, but also a touch easier to keep clean and "scuff" free.

...I know, you figgered I'd be going for the pink... but no, have to be practical about this. I just don't have any good reds or whites that pink wouldn't clash with!

Here's one link about these toys notebooks... and another...

So, will my new toy notebook live up to it's potential... or will I break Wind?

Either way... I won't see it for another couple of weeks (they haven't shipped yet,) but I'm really excited... for it will be I who has seen (and used) the Wind!

Why do I NEED such a toy tool in my technical arsenal? Well, first of all, "tech" is what pays my bills... and damnit, I need to be able to blog on my commute!

Thursday Thirteen: I steal from that Avitable fellow...

THURSDAY THIRTEEN!

This weeks Thursday Thirteen has been inspired by the letter "Q" and Avitable... who I'm reasonably sure is in league with that fellow who cannot be named here... to what degree, I'm not sure... but nothing would surprise me.

I don't know Avitable really at all... I've commented a few times on his blog... I think he MIGHT have commented once here... that said, I felt I knew him well enough to utterly rip him off.

Basically, I noted a LENGTHY "meme" on his blog and, like I did with Sue on what many considered my comic-gold Thursday Thirteen Post from last week, I totally ripped him off just so I could present...

MY THIRTEEN RESPONSES TO
A MEME I FOUND ON AVITABLE'S
BLOG

#13: Who are you? I am Napoleon Bonepart. I own a mansion and a yacht. Why is there a duck over there who is pointing at me with one hand and a flag with a flat-head wood screw crossing a baseball on it with the other?

This part of the Thursday Thirteen has been presented by old Warner Brothers' Cartoons.

#12: First thoughts in the morning... Like most people, I believe it's Must Pee Now followed by Coffee... where'z coffee...?

#11: Your thoughts on Life... I was more a Monopoly man myself.

#11: Your thoughts on Death... A lovely fellow... had a chat with us about the salmon mousse.

This entry of Thursday Thirteen brought to you by Monty Python.

#10: What is your favorite music lyric... Oh, that's a new one... well, a new one for me...

I can't decide
Whether you should live or die
Oh, you'll probably go to heaven
Please don't hang your head and cry
No wonder why
My heart feels dead inside
It's cold and hard and petrified
Lock the doors and close the blinds
We're going for a ride

Oh I could throw you in the lake
Or feed you poisoned birthday cake
I won't deny I'm gonna miss you when you're gone
Oh I could bury you alive
But you might crawl out with a knife
And kill me when I'm sleeping
That's why... (repeat chorus...)

Such a happy, happy tune!

Credit where credit is most assuredly due.

#9: What is your favorite Movie quote...

That's our Hitler! (Must be uttered by Zero Mostel.)

#8 What would be the best job in the world? Lottery winner... man of leisure... early and wealthy retiree... any of those.

#7: And the worst job would be? Public relations officer for any sub-prime lender? Literacy trainer for George W. Bush? The guy who cleans out porta-potties...? They'd all suck.

#6: What is your biggest accomplishment to date? I have not killed any of the multitude of incurably stupid people I've had the misfortune of running into... yet.

#5: What do you wish to accomplish in the next 5 years? Okay, a BIG part of me wants to answer this seriously and say GET THE BUS... but this hasn't been all too serious so far (or has it?) so I'm gonna say... find a good place to hide the bodies of those I mentioned above when I finally crack.

#4: If you die tomorrow who will speak at your funeral? I'm thinking about hiring a comedian... of the like of Don Rickles... I like the idea of someone insulting all the mourners and calling my earthly remains in my casket, a hockey puck.

#3: What would you like your eulogy to say? He was an incredibly wealthy guy! Loads of dough! Tonnes of moolah! He's laughing at what you suckers will be trying to do with his will, you lucky vultures you!

#2: How would you hope to leave this world? I'm thinking a Galaxy Class Starship... or a TARDIS.

This post brought to you by Star Trek: The Next Generation and Doctor Who.

#1: Upon arriving at the pearly gates...what would God say to you? Dude! You are SO screwed!

BONUS: And finally..Your famous last words? I'm sorry! I didn't know she was your wife/daughter/girlfriend! I mean, you wouldn't shoot a ninety-eight year old man, would you... now put down that g...

Helping Hand Thursday - Baby Shower Gifts

If you are new to our "Helping Hand Thursday" feature let me take a moment to explain it to you. Each Thursday on One Old Green Bus a website or blog is reviewed that you our readers might find of interest or helpful or offers a handy product or service to online customers like us.

This week I am going to have a look at an online shop where you can get some great ideas for baby shower gifts, and purchase products for both parents, and kids.

Discount Kid Store.com offers a handy way for Moms, and Dads to make all their purchases in one convenient, and secured stop. If you are looking for baby furnishings, bedding, clothing and/or toys this company supplies great quality merchandise at highly competitive prices. Some of the brand names they supply include Fisher-Price, Barbie, Hot Wheels, and Leap Frog to name a few. If you have a look via the linky I have added in for you above you will see that Discount Kid Store.com not only has a huge selection for shoppers to choose from, but will also save you big bux.

This very cool fire-truck toddler bed is just one of the products I had a look at over on their website. What little boy would not be thrilled to have this as his bed...and it is on for a very good price. B)

The site is easy to navigate, and products are grouped together in subsections to make them very easy to compare. This includes baby gift baskets for those looking for a ready to give shower present.

You might also want to sign-up for their free newsletter so you never have to miss out on any discounts, and sales or new product listings.

Thank you to my sponsor.

Kinda Wordless Wednesday: Back to basics...

Oddly enough, there's been a "resurgence" of interest in our dream... people asking about buses and asking about our bus and how things are going in particular... Truth to tell, there's been no change since this last update... but in keeping with this blog's original intent and content, allow me to share some busly goodness this Wordless (kinda) Wednesday...

An old RT making it's way along...

RLH 50 looking "spiffy" in Australia!

A Routemaster Coach... or RMC... see the "closing doors" on the back instead of the platform?

An old "desktop" of mine... showing a bunch o' buses!

TUESDAYS are BACK on One Old Green Bus...

What with the new "Doctor Who Mondays" (see below) which will be the ONLY deliberate "Who" mentions per week here (hope that makes some folks happy,) I'm back to posting willy-nilly (and other odd words,) on Tuesdays!

I know, I know... release the doves, set-free the balloons, commence au festivale! Seven days o' official posting here ARE BACK!

Just a quick catch-up for today really...

Well, I'm forty-one officially now... and no, sadly, didn't manage to squeak out the other gifts I tagged as prospected birthday gifts a couple of Saturday's ago... though Sue did wonderful with every other toy I asked for! (Whee~!)

...and no bus... yet.

I was tinkin' doh... some of you may remember my "issue with Oprah" and how, even now, I'm pretty sure her site-admins dislike me a bit...

Well, now she's got that new show... and I gots to that tinkin' thing...

Call it a hunch, but I'm reckoning that there are a lot of folks who aren't fond of the shows... or their host... and if you REALLY wanted to frost the pumpkin of the internet staff of said production team, why not enter it... and look into getting an old green bus for a family who's been trying for a few years now to make any headway with their quest/dream?

C'mon now! It'd be fun!

Anyone?

Bueller?

Oh well, can't blame a guy for trying.

I think I've burned enough pixels for one day... so I'm going to call it a Tuesday for now... and be back on Wordless Wednesday.

Oh, before taking off though... if you AREN'T a fan of Doctor Who and blew past yesterday's post... check out the "Addendum" about Exxon and the Sontarans... it's... well... spooky.

Whenever something like this comes to my attention, I like to post it because a lot of people "popping by here" through search engines are usually looking to buy a bus... and are probably not too happy when the come here and find out we're trying to do the same thing... Anyway, there's an old RT double-decker bus for sale on eBay right now for those looking to buy...

...click the image above for details. :)

Categories: Doctor Who Fandom, Doctor Who Mondays - To get it out of my system...

THE FIRST DOCTOR WHO MONDAY!

WELCOME TO MY FIRST DOCTOR WHO MONDAY! ...and a rather lame one it will be... but first, BEAR WITH ME and allow me to 'splain the concept...

First off, let me promise fans... NO (intentional) SPOILERS will be found here. I'll do my best to give news and whatnot... without giving away anything that might spoil things.

That said...

I'm a fan of this show. Period. Problem was, I was beginning to post about it here a little too much... so I've purposely scheduled ONE DAY to get the "Who-Fever" out of my system... yup, Mondays will be (from now on) my "Doctor Who" posting days...

...which means, for those that got grumpy, I will *not* be posting about the show at any other time... just Mondays...

Although I will allow myself the ODD reference when appropriate... like breaking out a "Dalek Bob" comment or post... (remember: "Bad Bloke" is an anagram of "Dalek Bob"!)

This will happen when I need to punctuate something with a homicidal, genocidal killing machine... sort of like, I'm so mad at the guys that tend to my servers that I'm going to send Dalek Bob to sort them out!

Anyway, this also means I will begin posting on Tuesdays again... so much for my short-lived "one-day-off-scheduled" break... Ach, if it means more readers and more chances of someone helping us with our dream, I'll do the extra post per week!

...besides, I have a feeling the Monday post will be compiled from notes throughout the week... so it'll KINDA write itself...

Anyway, the reason today's "premier post" on Doctor Who Monday is lame is because I've gotten everything ready in advance... because of a busy weekend, this post was readied a few days ago and published with a "time stamp" to appear today! This will certainly not always be the case, but it was my heckie burpday on Saturday so I wanted some time to myself... a break... so prepare the blog fodder in advance.

So, did The Doctor really get close to Prof. River Song? Was there a terrible book in the library about Harriet Jones? Do shadows do nasty things to people?

...at the time of writing this, I did not know... because I had yet to watch the latest episode... and I won't be doing spoilers anyway... well, not TOO many spoilers... a little bird told me that The Doctor WILL be making a mention of spoilers on this latest show... and he's not a fan of 'em.

Anyway, never let is be said I left you high and dry... here's an "Easter Egg" for you!

Addendum: (Fresh Stuff) So, we did watch the latest flavour... "Silence in the Library" and allow me to precurse my notes here... I'd been reading about what a boffo, stunning, amazing, frightening episode it SHOULD be... and perhaps, because of that, I was a little bit disappointed. DON'T GET ME WRONG, I certainly thought it was a very good episode... and I did enjoy it... but it didn't blow my socks off... Fair play to all though, the consensus online is that in this case, I know not of what I'm talking about... Ergo: Please make your own decision when you watch it.

...and yeah, "Who turned out the lights?" will never quite be the same statement again for me either.

Oh yeah, see this... that led to us finding this... which Sue read and all we could both say was SONTAR-HA!

For reference...

Getting A Cash Advance Online

It has been awhile since I have done a helping hand kind of post so I thought I would start the week off with a blog entry on a Personal Loan website that I had the opportunity to check out.

Have you ever needed a Cash Advance? In the bad old days we did on more than a few occasions, and they can be a life saver!

The Complete Loan Source is a handy online resource for those needing a cash advance no matter what their current credit rating or credit history is. If you need some cash fast, check out their site, I found it to be very easy to use.

I think we have all been in a position before where a service like this can be very helpful, and buy us some peace of mind.

Blog Your Blessings Sundays: Enjoying teh funny...

I beg forgiveness... I have pre-written and time-stamped this BYB Sunday as yesterday was a bit busy... and I wanted to make sure I had a BYB Sunday post ready... so if you're wondering about a lack of information on how my heppy burpday went, this is why... oh, and remember... tomorrow is "Doctor Who Monday" so I may not have "new news" until Tuesday... but there will be NEW CONTENT through until then (even if it is pre-posted!)

Amuse me! I think most of us feel that way online...

Sure, there's the informational aspect of teh intertubes, but most of us after we've had our fill of news, information, and catching up with friends want to find teh funny... something to amuse us online.

Actually, allow me to backtrack a little... like most people, teh funny is only one source of amusement and occasionally I like amusing myself by finding out new information or factoids... but really, most of the time, who doesn't like a good laugh?

It occurred to me the other day about how many "funny" sites are out there... and are absolutely free to view. Sure, they make the odd bit of coin advertising on their sites, but otherwise, it's just teh funny for the sake of teh funny...

For example, there's He Who Cannot Be Named and Avitable representing the bloggers... and who could leave out I Can Has Cheezburger for comedy goodness...

I'm quite fond of Gizmodo and Fark which are often intentionally... and sometimes unintentionally funny...

...and what's the "membership fee" for these sites? What is my personal cost?

...just my bandwidth.

Yup, I can usually find a smile, grin, or genuine laugh online pretty much anytime for one reason... many people share their humour "just 'cuz".

My blessing today is finding humour online to brighten a day.

Everyone "shares jokes"... but in this day and age, it's nice to know there's mass published humour for all out there... and I love it.

H/T to I Can Has Cheezburger
