Blog Your Blessings Sundays: Portable Music

You may remember me posting a while back that I'd picked up a cheap portable MP4 video and music player for my commute to and fro work... Well, it was good while it lasted, after a few tumbles, the video component works... but eats the battery at an alarming rate... so I've switched back to music.

...and I forgot how wonderful the trip becomes when it has a soundtrack.

It's interesting... and I find myself selecting music to be "time released" (barring delays) for the trip...

Dance music from the door to the subway to get me moving. "Techno" during the subway ride to coordinate with the lights and human traffic of the ride. Old school "goth" (Siouxsie and whatnot) for the bus ride... and finally classical during my walk into the office... then, something "energetic" for the walk from the front door to my office inside to give me a wee bit of "pep" to start the day.

On the way home, classical to the bus to sooth my nerves, classic rock on the bus to make me feel like I'm finally "away from work", lounge and jazz on the subway to relax and get my "intellect" going, and a classic Sinatra tune from subway to the front door just for fun.

I find an odd sense of "accomplishment" when I've got the mix "just right"... and love continuously tweaking my playlist and adding new music and shuffling old tunes away.

I plug in... and I'm not simply "commuting" to and from work... I'm at a nightclub dancing... I'm at a concert... I'm conducting a symphony... I'm within myself, lost in music... free of the world around me as much as I can be as I let the notes and sounds carry me.

I am of an age where I do remember transistor radios... then walkmans... now iPods and other MP3 players... and the whole idea of setting one's day and life to music is still so appealing.

My blessing this week is portable music...

All my life, there's been something around playing a tune, picking me up, seeing the world and nature set to a beat... and although I do enjoy the sounds of silence... or the sounds of true nature... I can't imagine life without music with me at all times.

My world has a soundtrack... and in my own headphones, I get to call that tune.

It's great to be your own personal DJ! My husband will walk for hours listening to the podcasts he downloads. He comes back a scholar with plenty to talk about.

I like the mix that makes your day!

Hey SandyCarlson... Podcasts keep me going to with the music... on almost every topic. An area of the magic MP3 player I neglected in my blessing! Perhaps next week... :)

I envy you and your blessing. I bought a little Shuffle over a year ago and I can't get any tunes to load on it. Had a friend's teen try it and they say it works. Maybe my computer has the problem? Anyway, that sounds like a blessing to me because there is always music in your heart and even f you didn't listen to it one day, the tunes would still be there in exact order of how you need them!

How khool that you have your music so arranged! I have two players, and both of them are just playlists, and I rather like being surprised at what comes next! But that's just me--loving a bit of chaos and surprise is my way. :-)

Happy BYB Sunday and mahalo for the visit. My new Blessings is now up....I'm usually late for putting it up as I'm out here in the middle of the Pacific, and by now, you're probably listening to classical music as your day winds down.

I love the blessing of music and the fact we can carry it with us anywhere now is an awesome thing. Papa Bear has an MP3 player for work, and once we get moved I am getting one for when I go out for my walks. I like to choreograph the music for that.

Hey Paulie... It's worth getting it going! It makes long walks (and commutes) that much better!

Hello Kuanyin... Oh, I know you're doin' the PST thing... and I should pop by your blog later... it's just on my sched, I tend to be a morning person... I'm en route now...

Hi Penelope Anne... Choreographing your walks and losing yourself in the music is the best! Your "tagged meme" will be up tomorrow, you tagger you!

When I used to walk to work, I lived for my CD player and rechargeable batteries. I must have looked (and sounded) like a fool singing along as I walked.

It's been a long time since I set any part of my life to music. Sounds like a great way to start and finish the day.

Should we go back to concentrating on and letting folks know how things are going with our bus? (Kinda back to the good ol' days?)
