#6 - High Five Fridays

"High Five Fridays" is a GREAT meme... and was started by bloggers who deal in "erotica" and therefore, certain links may be of a more "Adult" variety... If you see the dreaded "NSFW" (Not Safe for Work) or "NWS" (Not Work Safe) and you're of a more delicate constitution, please do not click on those links. That said, this new "meme" is a great idea... and I am glad it exists and plan on using it to it's fullest potential!

So, without further adieu...

My Sixth High-Five Friday...

#5: Y'know, I haven't really thanked (here on the HFF post) Ewen Pring of the RLH Information Centre Website... he's been a tonne of help with information and even his own documentation on Regent Low Height buses... if our "dream" does come true, Mr. Pring has been most helpful in preparing us as best he can... and if it does not, he's still the one who will make sure that, if possible, RLH 3, our "One Old Green Bus", will eventually find a good home.

#4: I gotta mention... no, wait... I can't mention him... he MUST remain "He Who Cannot Be Named"... because, statistically for some odd reason, I mention his name and WHAMMO! Hits go down by about a third... it's freaky!

None-the-less, "He Who Cannot Be Named" has been a blogger who I can count on for much merriment... many laughs... and the occasional guffaw... and unbeknownst to him (as he's not a regular reader here... despite what he says...) he's someone I can use as a comic foil for when I need to make a smart-alec comment (see below... my "Thursday Thirteen"... #2 and #1...)

Yup, a big high-five to Mr. Fa... er... "He Who Cannot Be Named"!

Oh, and if he reads this, it's obvious you were killed by Canadians who finally just couldn't take your ABUSE anymore.

#3: Trish! Come back to the blogsphere! We miss you muchly!

#2: Bill Blunt tells it like it is! (A great and fun blog deserving of a "High Five" for a man and a blog who's been a friend to our dream!)

#1: Our Numero Uno "High Fiver" though goes to Comedy Plus who bestowed upon me the honour of being mentioned as a blogs that aren't in my blogroll, but I see all over cyberspace.

I actually really appreciated that... it's a nice pat-on-the-back and bears up to the fact that my hits are very, very good... although my success at finding a way to make our dream come true has "bitten". (As I said on Thursday... Good at PR... lousy at everything else.)

So, many, Many, MANY thanks, Sandee of Comedy Plus... not only for the honour, but for the great inspiration for a fun "Thursday Thirteen" that people seem to have really enjoyed! (Yesterday's... scroll down to read...)

Find out how to give your High-Five Fridays here!

Thursday Thirteen #35 - The Larch... er, sorry... THIRTEEN THINGS!

THURSDAY THIRTEEN!

I've got that warm and fuzzy feeling... and no, it's not from urinating while wearing a pair of wool britches.

Nope, it's because yesterday, THIS HERE BLOG was mentioned in a Thursday (read: Wednesday) Thirteen!

If I may quote Comedy Plus...

Thirteen blogs that aren't in my blogroll, but I see all over cyberspace.

Yup, I was the third blog listed!

Now, there is no doubt that this blog... and I'll say it... is somewhat rather popular. Our stats kinda bear this out with literally two-thousand folks per day on average popping by to see wuz 'up...

Yup, although our "success" has been limited... our popularity has been excellent! (In other words, I'm great at PR but not much else...)

Anyway, in honour of this rather interesting honour from Comedy Plus, allow me to list for you TODAY...

THIRTEEN THINGS WE'RE REASONABLY
SURE ARE LESS POPULAR WITH
PEOPLE THAN THIS BLOG!

#13: Toe Jam

Although it may be hard to believe, I sincerely think that if most people had to choose between dealing with (on any level) toe jam or reading our pleading, begging, or whining for our bus... we'd win! (...and no matter what anyone tells you, peanut butter and toe-jam sandwiches are NOT a good idea!)

#12: "Spam" (e-mail, not the meat product)

I know I can thank "spam" (the e-mail, not the canned processed meat made of "Squirrels, Possums, And Mice" - now you know where they got the name,) for letting me know that my "member" is not big enough... and thousands of Russian women want to know me... and that Canadian pharmacies can get me cheap drugs (odd that I was oblivious to that one... being a Canadian and all...) and that I can download all kinds of usable software at bargain prices! ...but I still think MOST people would prefer to read this blog then their spam.

#11: Uninteresting Toll Roads

I'm sure that there is SOMEONE out there who LOVES to pay for a boring, slow, and uninteresting bit of road to drive on... but most people, I think, would prefer to read this blog than pay for their trip on a lonely stretch of highway.

#10: Strep Throat

Mmm... that feeling of not being able to swallow... that loss of voice... that agony in your neck... I believe this blog is indeed better, but it's in the eye of the beholder, I 'spose.

#9: "Montezuma's Revenge"

Although one could enjoy the "cleansing" of one's innards when a bout of loose stool in the extreme, I know that, personally, I'd rather be here reading a screen... then in the loo reading whatever material was left in there to enjoy... for far too long... and usually in pain.

#8: Haemorrhoids

Sitting "funny", walking "funny", and the ever worrisome pooping "funny". Although 'roids are not known as interesting ways to kill time, I'd like to assume that it would be preferable to read this blog then deal with Prep-H and whatnot.

#7: Ebola

What's more fun than having your organs liquefy from a devastating virus that kills about 90% of it's victims horribly within a few days of an outbreak? Well, I think this blog is...

Photo thanks to Wiki

#6: The Rev. Fred Waldron Phelps, Sr.

Okay, I will not assume that there's a possibility that there may be some shenanigans going on with the dear Rev. Phelps and his followers... in the fact that he was a lawyer and that eleven of his thirteen kids have law degrees... and there is a legal office with his name and what appears to be his kin... and there's (I'm certain a spurious) rumour on the 'net that since this might be the case, that The Rev. Phelps and his followers allegedly might bring lawsuits and litigation against anyone who they say tries to restrict their right to free speech and the media that paints them in a bad light (and crosses legal lines) making them a tidy sum... I still have to assume that even if these alleged activities are true and the fact that they do picket military funerals with anti-gay and anti-soldier signs and slogans... that this blog MIGHT be a little more popular then The Rev. and his group are with the masses.

Like I said, however, I would not make the assumptions above... and would remind folks at The Westboro Baptist Church that suing a poor guy in Canada wouldn't be economically prudent. :)

#5: Capital Gains Tax

Is there anything as pleasant as making a big sale of something you used your hard-earned money to invest in... something you then sell and get that big pay-day that you've been waiting for... only to give about 30% of your profits to the government? I'd like to think this blog is more pleasant... well, save maybe for the internal revenue folks.

#4: "The Last Drip" (men only)

As a man who needs to occasionally release liquid body waste (read: pee) I can tell you folks right now... you can shake, shimmy, and dance all you want at a urinal... and no matter what, the "last drip" will not release it's bond on your privy part. I have to assume, therefore, that this blog, for men, is more popular than the "last drip".

#3: "Wind Chill" in February in Canada

When you hear that the wind outside "Freezes exposed skin in 'X' seconds..." this blog seems somewhat better... unless you're reading it outside.

#2: Erectile Dysfunction

NOT THAT I'VE EVER EXPERIENCE THIS... I heard all about it from a leaked e-mail chat between "He Who Shall Not Be Named" and some guy named Adam (HONEST!!!) and it sounds attoricious! Not good for "either party"! Ergo: I'd say this blog is better than losing the lead in one's pencil... so to speak.

#1: Prison - as a prisoner... not a guard or warden... and not if you're "He Who Can Not Be Named" 'cuz he likes that sorta thing.

You gotta start sealing up those e-mail security leaks, Oh "He Who Shall Not Be Named"! Anyway, I can't imagine being cooped up with common criminals and constantly being "on guard" while using your soap-on-a-rope in the shower would be as good as reading this blog... well, at least not for most of us.

Wordless Wednesday: Busly images...

This week's offering came from Ian's Bus Stop... the BEST site for busly photos and information!

RT-3254 looking very jaunty during the St. Albans Running Days this past January.

RT-3254 running at night...

...and again... Great shots, Ian!

Now, normally I won't post a special picture without permission... and Ian from Ian's Bus Stop has already said it's okay to use HIS images... but this one, although on his site, is not "his"... but a chap named Mark Neal... who, sadly, due to time constraints, I was not able to contact before "Wordless Wednesday" had to go up... please read the caption about this image... and why I've jumped the "permission" gun... and I do hope Mr. Neal doesn't mind...

This is RLH 76... the "last of her class" as only 76 RLHs were ever built. (Our "One Old Green Bus" is RLH 3...) She's been in a scrapyard since 1973... and has only recently been "uncovered" during excavations of the yard. I'd seen pictures of her before (click here)... only the top of the bus was visible... but this is what thirty-plus years of scrapyard will do to a vehicle. There is interest, apparently, on trying to restore her... we can only hope the damage isn't as bad as it appears. This image really made me sad today... worrying about our One Old Green Bus...

Blog Your Blessings Sundays: Think Something Busly...

For two weeks, on and off, I've been posting about political things... Although some saw them as "partisan", I didn't... which is what made me rail... but a new week means a new leaf... and perhaps, since I want to get back to the root of this blog (especially while I still can,) I should look into a goodly, busly blessing!

What? Did I hear some of you say What? Matthew!?! While you still can!?!??! Wha happen'?!??!? Well, there's a chance (a good one) that RLH 3, THE "One Old Green Bus" has a buyer... if you want to know more about that, click here... but allow me to move on right now...

Anyway, I was thinking recently about things busly... as was, oddly enough, Sue... and what got us thinking about such things???

PROPERTY PORN!

Sounds lacivious, doesn't it?

Well, for those with a delicate constitution, don't panic... and for those hoping for some sort of new "titallation" that affects things below the waist line, sorry I'm going to disappoint you...

Nope, thanks to our "contact" in the UK, we've been watching a program called Britain's Dream Homes from the Beeb.

One of the show's hosts, Melissa Porter...

Now, the show's concept is simple... they pick a category for a "dream home"... like "Converted Mill", "River Front", "Victorian", or "Mews"... from there, they break choices down into three categories... homes for £250,000 or less, homes for £500,000 or less, and homes for £1,000,000 or less.

Two hosts, with "property backgrounds" (Melissa Porter and Rhodri Owen) select their choices and then show them off... and some of the homes are absolutely breathtaking...

Now, as an interesting side-note, as regular readers know, Sue is currently battling a crippling problem known as Graves' Disease... which is HIGHLY treatable and controllable once she get's to see her specialist (shortly) but has been a difficult road for us all... That said, Melissa Porter also has a thyroid ailment... the opposite of Graves'... hypothyroidism... which bears very similar trademarks. It was kind of nice to show Sue this article after watching the first three shows.

...anyway...

Allow me to share, with those of you who don't have issues with FLV video... which should be most... a sample (below...)

Yup, "Property Porn"... who WOULDN'T want to live in a place like this...

Now, leave it to Sue to point out the one drawback... and where the "busly" thing comes in...

While we were bother salivating over this mill-cottage, she mentioned...

Yeah, it's great... I could literally live and die there! ...but there's no place for a bus!

Without missing a beat, I turned and said, "I'd gladly do without a bus for this home!"

(Besides, there is a lovely chance to have a narrow boat...)

Well, we settled in and watched the rest of the program... granted, I kept thinking... isn't it odd that Sue had to point out to me, the guy who started all the busly nonsense, that a dream home... literally a dream home because we'll most likely never come close to owning it and it's a bit of a commute to my job from it... that the bus wouldn't easily factor in.

She, in essence, (okay, in "fantasy",) appeared to be willing to "shelve" what I think most of you agree is a truly spectacular home for a dream that started of as a "me" thing...

...again, obviously, it isn't just my dream anymore...

...and who knows, maybe there was sufficient parking at the mill? :)

Still, last night, Sue made my blessing... and My blessing this week is being with a thinking, selfless, supportive person who thinks ahead and of me.

Everyone knows a key to a good relationship is trust... next is loyalty... and the other is to be simpatico and adopt and help each other with their hopes and dreams...

Sue is that for me... and again, has adopted that dream... as has the kiddollo... and who could ask for anything more...

...except maybe the converted mill-cottage in the video clip. :)

The Bad Propaganda Poster from WWII Told Me To...

(Image via Wiki...)

Well, recently I've been accused of everything else... so why not listen to a fairly non-politically correct villain of a bygone era used to convince workers at a petro-chemical company to keep workin'...

...well, there was a war going on when this poster was printed... so don't be too hard on it...

...AND WE'RE NOT AT WAR WITH JAPAN ANYMORE so I am listening to "Tojo" above and takin' a day off from the blogsphere.

...even if a questionable, xenophobic, comic-style-caricature version of a WWII Japanese Imperial soldier might take over my blog.

See you when I do my blessing post on Sunday!

Betcha if "Barney" sees this, he'll blog about it.

Addendum: This was funny... in keeping with my new-forced-on-me political stripe (which will end shortly... promise!)

#5 - High Five Fridays

"High Five Fridays" is a GREAT meme... and was started by bloggers who deal in "erotica" and therefore, certain links may be of a more "Adult" variety... If you see the dreaded "NSFW" (Not Safe for Work) or "NWS" (Not Work Safe) and you're of a more delicate constitution, please do not click on those links. That said, this new "meme" is a great idea... and I am glad it exists and plan on using it to it's fullest potential!

So, without further adieu...

My Fifth High-Five Friday...

#5: Okay, this one's almost JUST to irritate "Barney" (a blogger who's seriously missing more than a few points,) and folks like him... but seriously, I've come to greatly respect Warren Kinsella just for ensuring that the good fights keep being fought!

#4: Andy at The Spicy Caudron deserves a "High-Five" for two HUGE reasons this week... firstly, getting Sue and I to watch an enjoyable "pilot" program from the Beeb called "Being Human"... which is a quirky drama... which has major room for laughs... but is still a drama... let me put it this way... um...

Okay, a vampire and a werewolf move into a haunted flat (apartment for those not in the know,) and befriend the resident ghost.

...and yes, it's a drama.

It was good!

Ten'll get you twenty that Hollywood will pick up the show, re-cast it, and it'll be a pale "Buffy" rip-off within two seasons.

Anyway, Andy also introduced us to "The Blobs" which are little animated "creatures" Beeb3 puts in their station liners... sadly, he mentioned them because they are "no more"... see below (which I hope brings you as much silly joy as it brought me...)

Like I said, however... According to Andy, the "Blobs" are no more... which is VERY sad... Click here for details.

Ach! Have another Blobby Video!!!

Well, I liked 'em!

#3: A "High-Five" and "Get Well Soon" to Lance Evers... better known as Lance Storm... from Calgary... Alberta... CANADA. Despite "hanging up the tights" a while back, Storm continues to be a prolific and interesting writer... as well as a heck of a "guest" on a few wraslin' radio programs. Lance is having his knee scoped so, as a fan, this "High Five", as stated, is a "Get Well Soon!" to boot!

If he ever reads this... if he could answer one question... when does he figger Don Callis will start blogging and will he and Callis try to kill the blogsphere???

Please note: Lance also has a great book club on his blog/website... worth the read!

#2: Proof positive that I'm non-partisan in my politics is my next High-Five which goes out to Blandly Urbane at DemediaCratic Nation!

Blandly has supported the dream since pretty much the begining and has been a good friend to the busly thang... this despite his odd spelling of "shtuff"... I believe he spells it "schtuogh" or the like... anyway, a big "High-Five" goes out to him for all his help!

#1: My number ONE high-five WITH A BULLET is someone who has believed in our dream and been most helpful! She's even taking the brunt of "Barney's" bluster (the blogger who's been the catalyst for much stupidity 'round the bus yard,) because she too is a friend to the environement...

So a HUGE honkin' High Five to Cybercelt!

A prolific blogger and a dear friend.

Find out how to give your High-Five Fridays here!

The purpose of this meme is to give high-fives to 5 people, posts, blogs and/or websites you've admired during the week. I will link to everyone who participates and leaves a link to their 5 high-fives on Friday. Trackbacks, pings, linky widgets, comment links accepted!

Thursday Thirteen (Thirty-Four... I got nuthin' funny for 34...) - Thirteen Shots at ME!

THURSDAY THIRTEEN!

THIS IS MY LAST POST ADDRESSING THIS... unless I change my mind... :)

I've done a couple of posts about how I do feel there's something to "global warming"... and although I did NOT buy into the "Worst Case Scenario" of "Doom and Gloom", I did say that the practical upshot of doing SOMETHING about it is cleaning the air... helping cut pollution... which I didn't see as a bad thing.

After posting it, I was subjected to SEVERAL tirades...

So, I tried a new attack... I said that ALTHOUGH I personally believed there was something to climate change, not everyone had to... and at least we could all agree that, in essence, pollution was a bad thing...

Well, this got the attention of several "questionable" conservative bloggers... one fellow (who I now refer to as "Barney",) was apparently very brutally offended by my DARING to suggest that polluting was "bad"... and thanks to him, three other "friends"(?) of his have been mailing, messaging, and generally berating me with rather interesting statements...

It's those statements... comments... and "criticisms" I want to share today...

...BUT...

Before getting started, I know that these three "conservatives" and the two that I originally (apparently) accosted months back do NOT represent the majority of actual conservatives who are capable of good debate and thinking... These are the morons that give the rest of you the nickname "Wingnuts"... still, I need to vent... so here is...

THIRTEEN THINGS I'VE BEEN TOLD
SINCE DOING THE POST ABOUT
POLLUTION BEING A BAD THING...

#13: "You care more about drowning polar bears than you do about babies!"

Okay, as much as I don't want to see ANY creature drown needlessly...

Not to tick off PETA and whatnot... but if my kid was hanging by a ledge next to a polar bear, and I had to save one or the other but not both... well... sorry to say, but it's buh-bye bear.

On the other hand, and I DO NOT SUBSCRIBE TO THE WORST CASE SCENARIO, if all the polar bears DO drown, we will all have a great deal to be concerned about... regardless of age, colour, sex, or anything!

That said, I do believe that there is a balance to be struck... one that maintains our health and living conditions... while we still look after nature.

...and it IS possible to care about more than one thing... but why do some of you INSIST on changing the subject??? It's rather... um... "revealing" about your psyche.

#12: "Have you seen this report by the fellow who's the editor of the British coal industry's journal? It says pollution is good for the environment!"

Do you realise how utterly deranged this report is?

"POLLUTE MORE! BURN MORE COAL! IT'S GREAT FOR PLANTS!"

Um... nonsense.

If the "byproduct" of burning coal was ONLY CO2... then maybe... but it isn't.

Even then, levels of CO2 should be MODERATED (See the paper by Maier-Reimar, Hasselman, Climate Dynamics, 1987) and yes, right now, there's a bit too much See-Oh-Two in the atmosphere!

#11: "You lecture us about pollution and you drive a big honkin' bus!"

Okay, NUMBER ONE, we don't have the bus yet and may never get it... but thanks for accusing us... and not reading thoroughly.

NUMBER TWO, we would not be using it "daily"... or even "weekly"... probably bi-weekly in the Summer only... if that... I still plan on taking the transit as I live in a major centre.

NUMBER THREE is we already have looked into "greening" the bus legitimately... See this post for the details on this accusation.

#10: "Al Gore's a doody-head!" (...or words to that effect.)

What's funny is IF PEOPLE READ my original documents, I feel the SAME WAY!

I hate the fact the Al Gore decided to be the messenger of this thus turning it into a "political debate" between (what I consider) a hypocritical Democrat and a Republican who's family made their wealth in the oil industry.

Thanks for SKEWING this for political reasons!

Al Gore IS a pantload for what he did... and I DO find him hypocritical in his actions.

#9: {Quote Not Needed:} Fill this space in with any version of sexual activity... apparently, this is what I do with Al Gore...

See above... and I don't swing that way... but what an interesting, if incorrect, fantasy life you have.

#8: "Who needs peer review! It's only to silence the truth!"

This was frightening...

To submit a scientific paper to be seen as fact by general academia, it must be submitted for neutral "peer review".

Effectively, this means it must be submitted to a body of neutral peers to look over, replicate any experiments/findings, and generally look for problems in what's been tabled. After this (if it survives the full process,) it is usually published in review journals... and is taken fairly seriously by other people in science.

This ensures that a drug company can't "publish scientific fact" about medications that have NOT been actually tested... or that a propaganda piece from the coal-industry's main journal saying "more pollution is a wonderful environmental thing" is not considered "fact" by anyone with a minor education.

The key word in this process known as "Peer Review" should be NEUTRAL... not skewed... and as such, is a GOOD thing... and keeps scientists honest.

...that said, because there is a lack of credible peer reviewed papers on certain subjects, some people crap on peer review...

...which again, is just dumb, Dumb, DUMB!

Without real peer review, MANY questionable "facts" would be being taught at your schools, practiced by medical staff, and generally utilised as "absolutes" in most engineering like architecture...

Neutral peer review is a good and necessary thing... sorry if it doesn't help your case... that fact doesn't make it a "bad thing".

#7: "You'd send billions of dollars for no reason to China!"

Hunh? What? Oh yeah... USE LESS COAL and send the savings to China? USE LESS GAS and send the contents of your wallet to Beijing? MOVE TO CLEANER ELECTRICAL GENERATION and use the extra dough to buy copies of "Mao's Little Red Book" for everyone?

I see this and I wonder, WHAT THE {blank} IS WRONG WITH YOU FOLKS for saying that nonsense!?!

#6: "You're spreading fear and terror!"

Y'know, this kinda whacks me out... "Weapons of Mass Destruction" was a mistake... but "Cleaner Environment" is evil propaganda.

Oh, and remember folks... I did believe that Saddam was a bad man who had to go... however, I believe the case was there without the WMD and trying to link him to Bin Laden.

Anyway, MY message was I don't buy into the doomsayer's worst case scenario, but think cleaning up the air is a good idea.

I sincerely apologise if my statement scared anyone out there.

#5: "You moonbat!"

Lessee... according to what I can "Google"... a "Moonbat" is an epithet tossed at liberal leaners and is characterized as Someone on the extreme edge of whatever their -ism happens to be.

Let's see... my "ism" and statement was... "Pollution is bad"... maybe it's me, but I just don't see that in my message. Odd.

#4: {Quote Not Needed:} Fill this space in with any version of sexual activity... apparently, this is what I do with (apparently the corpse of) Pierre Trudeau...

I'm tempted to make the joke about necrophilia meaning never having to say you're sorry... but I'll refrain.

Non-Canadian's may not get this reference, but either way, I assure my good readers that I have not "dug up" a good date lately... and again, I don't swing that way... especially with the deceased.

#3: "LEFTY!"

Well, I bat left... I'm a lefty shooting hockey... but I throw right and my writing hand is my right... does this make me a righty lefty?

What's hilarious is that I have MANY friends (and yes, they are FRIENDS,) who think I'm a borderline Fascist because I'm too "right wing" for them... and now, because I dared say, "Pollution is bad", I'm a radical socialist to some...

...and you wonder why I'm confused.

#2: "You've been sucked in by the main-stream media! You know NOTHING and are no better than a SHEEP!"

Y'know, this is the SAME argument put forward by those who feel they've slipped in RFID tags into our Ovaltine and, with these tags, THEY are tracking our spending habits on toothpaste!

I feel about the same when someone tells me I've swallowed the lefty main stream media's garbage about pollution as I do when I'm told I've swallowed the government-controlled main stream media's take on that brain-toxin known as flu vaccinations!

...especially since I don't have cable and almost never watch TV.

...and I'm the "moonbat", eh?

#1: This one I need to quote directly... but edited a touch... you'll get the practical gist of it... I'm substituting the word "FROG" for words I really can't reprint here...
"I hope you FROGing die under your FROGing bus you FROGing lefty piece of FROG!"
It then went on about (apparently) my views on many things... from same-sex marriage to abortion. Basically, I (again apparently) need to FROGing die.

This one speaks for itself.

AGAIN, I know that these five idiots who hurled (or just said) the above to me are a minority... the "bad eggs" that give an entire political spectrum a bad name...

...unlike their American bretheren, they mock the Holocaust, use Nazi images as "jokes", and genuinely show a horrid racist/sexist side of my country I was sorry to ever find out existed... and when "accused" of being extremely off-colour, they insist that the use of these things is "funny" and those insulted are "the politically correct leftists" who "need to have their sense of humour checked."

None the less, I did want to share what I personally have had to deal with of late...

...even if I have let the terrorists win because I'm a socialist/communist supporter of an athiestic nanny-state government who's brainwashing me with TV sitcoms to buy more reusable cloth bags for my grocery shopping.

Back to work... "But it's a short week!"

Okay folks... I know... the glass should be half-full... and you really, honestly, absolutely see the good in everything... count every blessing, so to speak...

...but it's Tuesday after a long weekend... which is more like Monday then most people are willing to admit.

...and what do those glorious, shiny, happy, ridiculously optimistic people say on a day like today???

Well, at least it's a short week!

I hear this... and all that goes through my mind is Yeah, but where could I hide your body, you insuferable cheery sod!

Un-hunh... yup... short week... meaning five days productivity expected to be jammed into four.

...and then, next weekend will seem "shorter".

Y'know, last time I was in an employment agency, I asked... I mean, they said, What kind of job were you hoping for?

I was honest... Man of leisure... Lottery winner... Eccentric tycoon... They all seemed viable to me... still do!

...but they could find me no employment in one of those positions...

So, it's off to the grinder...

Can ya tell I'm just NOT appreciating today so far... Hopefully, things will improve...

Grrrumble... monday... grumble... tuesday... grumble... morning... where'z... ma... coffee...

MONDAY - REPOST - HOLIDAY!!!

Yeah, this is a repost from Saturday (somewhat edited)... but hey, it's a holiday here!

I'm taking Monday off so to speak...
Not just any Monday, however, but a Monday of a LONG WEEKEND!

You see, it's the FAMILY DAY weekend... the first one... and Ontario Holiday mandated by our provincial government!

Personally, I LOVE IT!!!

You see, Canada (well, Ontario,) has been devoid of an official holiday in February... traditionally the coldest and nastiest month of the year 'round these parts... and so, VOILA! We are OFF for the weekend!

Although, there are Canadians and Canadian institutions that are deserving of a holiday that are sadly neglected...

Anyway, in keeping with the thought of "Family Day", I will be spending it with... drum roll please... THE FAMILY!

We have plans of "Museuming" and shopping and a few other things... sadly, "blogging" is not a part of this.

I will have a "blessing" ready for Sunday... but other than that, I'm gonna be online sporadically and enjoying "Family Day"...

*sigh*

What's weird to me is how sarcastic this post sounds (considering I'm using THIS post twice... Saturday and Monday...) and the pics and video probably don't help with this impression...

...BUT it's really NOT sarcasm. I am genuinely looking forward to some quiet, quality time with Sue and the kiddollo... and assorted pets.

HAPPY FAMILY DAY WEEKEND, ONE AND ALL!

"Truthiness" in action!

Quick note on this family day... "That blogger" is now referring to me as "gas guzzlin bus guy"... granted, this was while he was relaying already disreputed studies that he believes means we should all hook a hose from the nearest coal burning electrical generating plant's chimneys to our homes 'cuz the emmisions are oh so good for us. (Can someone hook him up NOW PLEASE!?!?!)

Thanks to Wiki for the image... Thanks to Sheryl Leach as well...

Anyway, I want to quickly cover off the "gas guzzlin bus guy"...

See here (January 12th, 2008) and here (August 4th, 2006).

Most of the "pro-pollution folks" (like this blogger is... he HONESTLY does support MORE POLLUTION and has tried to claim MORE POLLUTION IS GOOD FOR THE ENVIRONMENT...) when I show them the above posts don't get it. I showed that blogger the above posts... and yup, he didn't get it.

I should care that much... he finds the Jewish Holocaust endlessly amusing (using images and whatnot to "make fun" of other things and "boltser points"...) and this is just ONE of the reasons I will not link to him as I do believe he's an embarassment to THINKING Conservatives and Canadians as a whole.

Thanks to Wiki for the image... Thanks to Sheryl Leach as well...

"Barney" (the blogger's new name here...) also doesn't like the fact that QUESTIONS WERE ANSWERED...

...but, of course, sources that don't work for petro-chemical companies, The Energy Lobby (any form of energy lobby in Canada), or were not from the Bush Administration/American government are inadmissable...

...this includes one with a "bad link" that answered one of his challenges... which I bolstered with asking Barney to argue with The British Antarctic Survey of 2006/2007, Dr. Isabella Velicogna’s work with The University of Colorado at Boulder, and the findings of GRACE from The University of Texas at Austin... but as we all know, The University of Texas, University of Colorado, and The Royal Society are all in bed with China. Just ask Barnerrific!

I was done with Barney a while back... but I did want to point out that if Barney still considers us to be hypocrites because of our "gas guzzling" ways, considering Barney SAID they had read the links I show above... well... that makes Barney someone with a tenuous grasp of the "truth" and "facts".

...but then again, according to The Barnster, sucking up the exhaust from your car is just the best darned thing in the world for you and your children!

Way to go, Barney!

Thanks to Wiki for the image... Thanks to Sheryl Leach as well...

You've been a pantload. Go suck a tail-pipe for your health!

Addendum - Feb 19th: Barnster is now whining on his blog that he has ALWAYS known the difference between "pollution" and "CO2"... despite the fact that the study he spewed forth was PRO-burning coal for electrical generation (it was written by the leader of the coal lobby in England,) and when I CLEARLY said that in essence, all I wanted to say was pollution was bad, he did NOT say "Well, you're right... Carbon monoxide and sulfur from burning fossil fuel and coal is bad... but I stand by my feelings on Global Warming!"... which is what I was TRYING to get him (and others) to do... nope... he attacked, attacked, attacked... and ignored... and mocked... and proved his lack of literacy... but like I said, he couldn't "hate" a moderate... and he NEEDED to hate.

Must remind self: This moron (Barnacle) is an embarasment to thinking Canadian Conservatives and pretty much every Canadian in general... they are NOT indicative of the ACTUAL "Right"... they are truly "marginal" in all aspects.

Blog Your Blessings Sundays: Indiana Jones has his hat...

Indiana Jones has his hat... as does John Steed... Sharpe has his "green jacket"... Matthew Didier has his old, worn out, distressed, black-leather motorcycle jacket... and he used to have his boots.

Size 11... or 11 1/2... "E" or "EE" width... black... square toe or "snipped"...

*Le Sigh...*

From the age of seventeen to the age of thirty, "HH Brown" made my footwear exclusively... and I never varied from the path.

I would go to a place called "Hercules Sales" in Toronto... a former army surplus store with "hiking" and other fashion "things"... and buy my boots.

Once home, I would daub them with liquid, leather-safe silicone sealant... let them dry for an hour... spray them with silicone sealer... dry for four hours... then coat them heavily in "Dubbin"... let them sit overnight... wipe the excess Dubbin off, polish with black polish and shine to a close-mirror shine (usually a two-hour affair involving polish, clothes, and brushes...) and I was ready to go.

Because of this "treatment", on average a pair would last about a decade... and I'm a heavy walker... both in weight and in amount of foot-work I do.

I would "break in" the boots and refer to them as my "slippers"... because they would be extremely comfortable to me...

I literally wore them all year long... with extra-socks in winter, light socks in summer... extra polish for "formal" affairs... extra Dubbin for "informal" hikes.

Then, round about thirty... my last pair died... a noble death... for they had been through two long-term girlfriends, several road-trips to haunted locations around Southern Ontario, England, France, The United States... I almost wanted to give them a deserved Viking funeral...

...but by that time, Hercules Sales was gone (closed down and now a "sex shop" on Yonge Street,) and I had decided that "boots" weren't my thing anymore... despite being recognised almost all my life for my boots... and never looked back. I had grown up... or so I thought... at least, I thought that abandoning my trademark boots was "growing up"...

...until...

This winter has been bad for snow... Very bad.

I did have a pair of winter boots that I paid a small amount for at a discount store in Toronto... and they literally fell apart in two months.

Sue, really worrying about my cold tootsies, was on me to buy new boots... which I really wasn't interested in... until she suggested, Why not try to get a pair like your old ones?

It was an almost magical... almost religious moment...

My love... my wife... was not only giving me permission, but ENTHUSIASTIC about me "reclaiming" a bit of my youth in these boots!

Off to the "HH Brown" website Saturday night to find out...

...they don't make that type of boot anymore...

CRUSHING~!

Not to be detered, I simply looked up to see if anyone else had something similar... something that would be as good as my boots...

...and I did... but MAN, they were expensive... or "only available" in the States...

I was starting to give up hope...

I found Sage Men's Model 4771 Motorcycle Boots, Chippewa model 27868, Corcoran Harness boots, Boulet Men's Model 6082 Motorcycle Boots, and Durango Men's Model DB510 Motorcycle Boots... they were all reasonable "substitutions" for my beloved "HH Browns"... but I was not having any success... it wasn't Sue's fault, but it was depressing...

...then...

Voila!

With Sue's permission... and a pre-paid Mastercard... I HAVE BOOTS COMING!

Now, it may shock you that something SO small could make such a big difference... but I really, Really, REALLY missed my "slippers"...

My Blessing This Week is My Boots and Sue Suggeting I Get Them!

Comfort, security, and REALLY HAPPY nostalgia... and proof of Sue's genius and love for me...

...and her genuine concern for my footsies!

It sounds weird, but I am SO looking forward to (later this week) daubing silicone, spraying silicone, and rubbing on the Dubbin followed by the polishing...

...followed, no doubt, by me strutting about like a peacock in my new slippers.

A minor thing, but a WONDERFUL thing... especially for my psyche!

#4 - High-Five Fridays!

My Fourth High-Five Friday...

Saskboy comes in first just because of this marvellous post about the animosity of political bloggers... and their fierceness... and he's another "Pollution is Bad and NOT a Political Philosophy" types like myself!

Oddly enough, Saskboy kinda offended my next "high-five" blogger, Canadian Cynic, who gets a "High Five" from me this week because it is a breath of fresh air for this moderate to find someone OTHER than a hard-right-wing blogger out there... or at least, it seems that the uber-right make up the lion's share of the blogsphere... so it was GREAT to read some rants on the OTHER side of the fence for a change.

Granted, in all honesty, "CC" wouldn't like me very much on a hunch... I swing to the right on a lot of issues... and I do believe that paranormal events actually are experienced by people (I believe "CC" is a humanist... or atheist... but I could be wrong).

Anyway, should "CC" read this, please DO note that we have an EXCELLENT working relationship with the fine folks at Skeptics(sic) Canada... they tolerate us... and haven't slammed us... honest! We've had the current and former chairs over for coffee at our place even! (This probably won't help my cause with "CC"... but he still gets a "High-Five"!)

Dancing Rainbows Tie-Dye gets a High-Five for the excellent work on the shirts... and for the great e-mails sent our way... and because she's a fellow bus-enthusiast (and former Double Decker driver!!!) Winning combination! She gotta write a book one day.

The Good Reverend Anaglyph almost made milk come out of my nose with this post on his blog, Tethered Cow Ahead. That deserves a high-five... and a hanky for my keyboard...

And a BIG HIGH-FIVE to Nicholas at A Gentleman's Domain for TWO BIG WEEKS IN A ROW of "Thursday Thirteens" that were NOT trying to sell DVDs or books from Amazon! {Grins!} Seriously, his is a fine blog and well worth the visit!

Visiting fellow High-Fivers is encouraged! If you participate, leave the link to your High-Fives in others comments (please note if NSFW - Not Safe for Work).

We Interrupt This Thursday for An Important Message...

First off, this is NOT my "Thursday Thirteen"... that's below this post...

_____________________________________________________

This here is a "Time Stamped Post" scheduled to launch at about the same time as I arrive home from work... about 6pm EST...

You see, it's come to my attention that today, being February 14th, is St. Valentine's Day... a day that we are supposed to honour those whom we love... and although there are many people in my life whom I can safely say that I love, there is one special person above all I feel the need to make a PUBLIC declaration to about my affection.

I wish I could do more than a lousy blog post... and I assure my reader I will be doing more later... but recent events stopped me from being able to "shop" or do something a little more... um... "Commercial", shall we say... (and she knows what I mean.)

So without further adieu...

TO MY SUE!

...and although I'm sure there's some folks out there who just don't get it... trust me, Sue will appreciate this very, Very, VERY much!

FOR SUE: Je t'aime, mon cher! Happy Valentine's Day... I love you VERY muchly indeed... and I will always be your busman. XOXOXOX

Thursday Thirteen (What's 3 x 11?) - Thirteen Propsed Reality Shows Had The Writers Strike Gone On Longer...

THURSDAY THIRTEEN!

So, the writer's strike is over... and the hits on blogs and websites goes down as everyone's favourite TV shows start trickling back onto the tube with new episodes... and the collective IQ of the North American public drops by about 25% if not more.

Still, we should be thankful... as I managed to get lists of shows that WERE going to start production if the writer's strike HAD gone on for any longer than necessary...

So let me share this list with you... now, I can't reveal my sources... and I have a hunch some may NOT be true... but here's...

Thirteen Reality Shows
That Would Have Happened Had
The Writers' Strike Continued...

#13: Fudd Me, Baby!

In this fun-filled romp, seven backelors are given a mansion and a yacht and sent out to hunt skwewy wabbits. Hillarity insues!

#12: FABulous Times!

A reality show featuring he who cannot be named (If you're wondering, if I "name" him, my hits honestly DO go down by about 25 to 30%,) going through a normal(!?!) week of his life... segments include 101 Fun Things to do with Sculpey... #79 of which SHOULD NOT be viewed by children, those with a delicate constitution, and people with weak hearts or coronary health issues... not to mention hemmeroid sufferers.

#11: BLOGSPHERE~!

An intimate portrait of the people that have blogs with regular posts. Their exciting life and times! SPECIAL: Today, Thursday Thirteeners talk about VALENTINES DAY!!!

#10: Joe Thousandaire

With budgets slashed, the hit show "Joe Millionaire" transforms from a fellow "pretending" to have a load of cash to tempt a trophy wife from a selection of six gold-digging bimbos to a guy who pretends to have thousands... and is utterly ignored by everyone.

#9: Geography 105

Follow a junior high-school (grade seven) intermediate class of geography students through the highs and the lows of studying the globe! Passion, rommance, intrigue... all these things are missing from these 45 minute classes revolving around the basic understanding of longitude and lattitude! (Oddly enough, even though filming hadn't started, this program won seventeen different awards for excellence from the Parents Television Council.)

#8: Survivor: The Mall!

Will a band of six castaways survive living in a shopping mall in Columbus, Ohio for a couple of days AFTER WE TAKE THEIR CREDIT CARDS AWAY! Tune in!

#7: Train 48

Intrigue and drama on a short-line commuter train through the Greater Toronto Area... oh crap, that show DID exist! Damn!

#6: Paint Drying/Grass Growing/Hair Growing

A three-part series... in which one can watch paint drying, grass growing, and hair growing on a person's head IN REAL TIME! Gotta be better than Train 48 though...

#5: Thank You For Calling Microsoft Technical Support

Watch as countless people place folks on hold for hours, tell folks their copies of "X" are pirated so they can't support it, tell people that because they have "non-Microsoft products" installed they are SOL, tell people to pay $100.00 per hour for "escalated support, tell them to re-install their operating system, or re-route their call to the new call centre overseas! Exciting and educational television!

#4: Hell's Greasy Spoon Kitchen

Four guys with more hair on their arms than on their heads try to become the head short-order cook at a run-down bar and grill near the waterfront. Like "America's Next Top Model" but with more bacon grease...

#3: Home Decorating with Carrot Top!

Okay, this was just an excuse to put another Carrot Top photo on the blog to ick people out.

#2: Whiney Bus Dude

Missing an opportunity to do a DECENT program using Sue and myself as we're paranormal investigators with a decent reputation, some ignorant TV producer straps a damned camera on our chest looking up our noses while we whine about the fact we might lose our dream bus and are asked to run about and scream on cue... Dreck. ...and we STILL won't get the bus... and they'll STILL ask us to dance to the Ghostbusters theme... and the last show will feature Sue and myself kicking the director repeatedly in the nads.

#1: Guitar Hero Groupies

The game that's become more than a game, but a lifestyle... watch as we follow two gals and a guy as they mark out for game players who enjoy virtual air-guitar on screen and act like three ten-year old girls who've just won tickets to "High School The Musical On Ice". Sad, sad people...

Super-Quick Update...

THIS IS NOT MY WORDLESS WEDNESDAY POST... that's just below this one...

------------------------------------------

Got an e-mail asking about a bus we mentioned here and it's fate...

Above is Barton 512... a 1948 Leyland PD-1A that not too long ago, the owner was quite forthright about... he either sold it (by month's end in December) or scrapped it.

We publicized it as much as we could on the blog in hopes of finding a home for it...

Whether we succeeded or whatever, a glance at The British Bus Club has confirmed that it has been sold.

We don't know to whom... but at least it (apparently) is safe from the wreckers.

If we find out more, we'll let people know.

Wordless Wednesday: Busly eBay!

Here's a collection of images stolen borrowed images from eBay auctions that are in my usual "busly" way...

Here's some old "London Transport Magazine" covers... the mags are on sale through eBay...

...and here's the "toy" RLH (now on eBay) that, sadly, eluded me so far... and I can't afford right now... but soonly... one will be mine...

I stay stoopid, k?

Folks, if a politician you like... or even a good friend... heck, if your mother tells you that standing in front of a high-speed truck won't hurt you... you should question that statement REGARDLESS of who delivers it.

About two years ago, I started this blog... and vowed I would not voice "strong opinions" too often on it. I knew pretty much from the start that it would be a sounding board of sorts along with the original intention of it's genesis.

The original intent? Well, since I was (at the time) chronically unemployed and getting more redundant in my field of information technologies by the day, as well as trying to hold together a legitimately starving family was to throw out a family dream into the universe to see what would happen... would people help make something come true that otherwise would not... or would it be what it was... not much of anything.

Well, the answer was half-and-half. We had help... the blog caught on... and although it's looking more and more like we're really not going to see the dream come true, I enjoy the sounding board... and by MOST accounts, what I write here is reasonably entertaining.

...and for those keeping track, employment improved, money improved, and there's been some changes... but hey, read the blog to find out about 'em!

Now, a LONG while back, I did do a post about pollution... and how I'd heard way back when that "acid rain" was a myth, that cleaning it up would bankrupt provinces and states and ruin the economy, and that it was all nothing more than "doomsayers" saying it was the end of the world... such pish and posh!

Well, I pointed out that I was a kid who had a family cottage... my mother named the family "spread" Turtle Island because of the abundance of turtles... as well as minows and frogs... and they all started to dissapear... and then I pointed out, in the city, we lived near a cemetery... and I literally watched the limestone tombs crumble because of the "myth" of acid in the rain...

I also pointed out that it WAS controlled and no, life didn't end as we knew it.

I correlated this to the recent cry of "Climate Change"... I pointed out that the "evidence" to say it wasn't happening was not compelling to me... and that the evidence that something was up WAS compelling to me... and I surmised this... then former vice-president Al Gore made it a political agenda... and now, if you're TRULY a "Right Winger", you MUST deny the science and grasp at straws to disprove it... if you're a "Left Winger", you must embrace the worst-case scenario and ban all cars.

Well, I am and always have been a moderate... disliked by the left 'cuz I'm too conservative... hated by the right because I'm too liberal.

That said, I simply said...

Regardless of your political stripe, you have to admit that pollution, regardless, is bad... and cleaning things up is a good idea. We don't have to do anything drastic, and we can look at alternatives... heck, we can even decide that "Global Warming" is bunk... but cleaning the air is a good thing. Heck, North America's economy has been based on coming up with new ideas through research and devlopment and then outsourcing them into a free economy... so why not put some Research and Development into cleaner solutions?

To be honest, how was I to know that this translated directly into...

COMRADES! You will BEND to my LIBERAL LEANINGS AND FEAR MONGERING! You will GIVE UP YOUR FACTORIES! You will GIVE UP YOUR CARS! You will no longer be able to do ANYTHING!!!! Now, I'm going to get in my new suped up bus that burns more fuel than a coal plant in Pennsylvania and run over some babies! SEND YOUR PAYCHEQUE TO CHINA!!!

Apparently, at least according to one blogger, that is what I said... and I already blogged about it in a "blessing" post... believe it or not.

Granted, that blogger still thinks burning coal and car exhaust is GOOD for the environment... and he makes light of the Holocaust... but I've had enough of that blogger.

Folks, this is not and has not been a "political blog"... and I'm sorry if me saying that I do personally believe in the concept that we're polluting our planet and should TRY to make things better is offensive to you...

...but this blog was and SHOULD BE entertaining... and I'm going back to that after this post.

To this "blogger" and those of his ilk, I leave one thing to ponder...

You ask me to "back up" my personal beliefs... and I do... and then shoot down my information as being "leftist propaganda"... and then present your own stuff... which is PROVEN to be driven by skewed sources... but it's "unarguable"...

...and I'm the bad guy.

Oh well, then I'm the bad guy... and I am obviously far more ignorant than you... I mean, when I see a Geography Professor discussing refuting climatological finds using astronomy spearheaded by a non-astronomer who's openly in bed with a lobby group that is funded by the coal producing companies using data that historically could not exist, I know you're obviously in the right.

Now, if YOU feel you've won the argument... that's great... because to me, no you haven't. You haven't changed my mind... you haven't REALLY silenced me... and simply saying, Your sources are lefty propaganda! does not make them lies... If a "lefty" told you that it DOES hurt to stand in front of a fast-moving truck, would you?

Allow me to state a fact then...

IT DOES HURT TO STAND IN THE PATH OF A FAST MOVING TRUCK.

Please, feel free to prove my "lefty propaganda" on this one wrong.

Folks, I am about to admit something...

I will VOICE my opinion about pollution in general. It's bad. Period. We should always work towards making things better. If I may impart more Lefty Propaganda on you... Sucking on the exhaust pipe of your car will not, REPEAT, will not make you healthier. Emissions from coal plants is not, REPEAT, not good for plants.

That said, I will NOT be drawn in to voicing my opinion on other things as people wish to try and sus out my political (and religious???) stripe on ALL levels... in fact, most of the other things have zip to do with my politics... they have more to do with my understanding of science and the universe... not because one person or a "party" of people "proclaimed" something... or grasp at straws to validate things.

This blog will continue... and if that blogger wishes to claim victory because I did not find a right-wing, petro-chemical company scientist who said something other than their "party line", then victory is his. {{Commence au Festivale!}}

I'll stick to my ignorance... because I didn't believe that acid rain was a myth... and smoking being bad for you was a myth... and PCPs, lead in paint, and CFCs being toxic was a myth.

I believe that corporate studies (or studies funded by corporate interests... or studies started by political agendas...) are skewed.

...my mind won't change on that.

So, there's my last word... If that blogger feels he has won... let him... I'm going to... 'cuz that's not why I'm here on the blogsphere...

'nuff said and I'm moving on... Really... SERIOUSLY...

...oh, and pollution is bad.

...and standing in front of a speeding truck is unhealthy.

...and using Nazi imagery to "throw home a point" on ANYONE other than the WWII German "government" is beyond dumb... it's obscene.

Oh, and true to form... to quote myself...

(b) We've always written about "greening" and the bus... See this link if you doubt this. Granted, it seems to confuse the right wingnuts... they want me SO badly to be an extremist and because I'm moderate, they can't get a grip on it... so the usual argument "against" the post of the truly "green" bus is that they don't get it.

I know you'll be shocked to hear... the blogger didn't get it.

Addendum: As an admitted conservative on many points, I do have to keep reminding myself of the BAD track record Canadian conservatives have when it comes to new technology, research and development, and new industry... and it's something that I will never forgive them for.

Yet Another Addendum: Thanks, SaskBoy... Canadian Cynic might not appreciate you, but I do... GREAT post!

And The Last Addendum...

"The poor fXcker..."

SUCH LANGUAGE! You have come to expect better of your humble correspondent, I know... but the unedited version of the title of this post, "The poor fXcker..." was about all I could say last night...

Sue and I settled in to watch some documentaries... about ancient Egypt mostly... and one the programs we'd save for this night was about the deciphering of "The Rosetta Stone" which led to our understanding of ancient Egyptian languages... especially hieroglyphs.

Well, the show starts of in the year 1822 with a re-enactment of the fellow in Paris who "cracked the code", so to speak... and at the pivotal moment (you'll see at the end of the video below,) Sue and I laughed nervously... and yes, I kept saying, "The poor fXcker..."

You see, since Sue and I are both sorta on a hunt to crack our own studies, (see here and here,) we could see ourselves in his position... finding the "answer"... running to show someone who cared... and at the moment of revelation to the masses...

Hence, we both laughed nervously... and yes, I said "The poor fXcker..."

Now, in our defence, we didn't know the story of Jean-François Champollion so for us, the above seemed... well... sadly familiar to what could be our own future...

To give away the ending, he did survive this illness... and lived to publish his findings... in fact, he made it for another ten years after his "fall". (Let's face it... probably a mild heart attack or stroke...)

...and yeah, he did "decipher" the hieroglyphs... so for a forty-one year old who still passed before his time, he did leave his mark on this world for the better.

...but still, watching that video... "The poor fXcker..."

Another reason "low bridge" model buses are better...

From The BBC...

Six hurt as roof ripped from bus

Six people were injured when a double decker bus crashed into a railway bridge in north London.

The bus had been diverted along Prince of Wales Road because of a major fire at Camden market on Saturday.

A police spokesperson said one man suffered serious head injuries when the roof was pulled off the vehicle.

The route 24 bus between Hampstead Heath and Pimlico normally goes through Chalk Farm Road. Drivers have been asked to avoid the crash site.

The crash happened near the junction with Talacre Road at about 0900 GMT.

A Transport for London (TfL) spokesperson said buses had been using the route under the arched bridge safely for 24 hours before the crash happened.

He said: "The route is a recognised diversion route and drivers know to drive straight through the middle."

Rail workers were the first on the scene and managed to help many passengers off the bus.

Richard, a passenger on the bus behind, watched the crash from the upper deck.

He said: "There were road markings on the bridge and on the road telling drivers to keep to the middle, but I saw the bus go into the wall.

"All the windows popped out and the roof just peeled back about half way.

"The people at the back had time to duck and were protected by the chairs."

Councillor Matt Sanders, the Haverstock representative for Camden Borough, was travelling on another bus behind the crash.

He said: "The first I knew about it was when we ground to a halt and then saw the emergency services arrive."

Buses and overground rail services have been disrupted, and tickets are being accepted on London Underground.

An investigation into the crash has been launched by TfL and the bus operator, London General.

Saturday night's fire caused serious damage to the area's famous market.

Storage buildings for the market and the nearby Hawley Arms pub were also damaged and local residents had to leave their homes.

Police warned that main roads could remain closed for up to four days.

The emergency centre set up at Talacre Sports Centre to help people evacuated during the fire was reopened for bus passengers, but was not needed.

Several people were treated for shock by paramedics.

Very frightening... and we here at "One Old Green Bus" do hope those hurt come out okay... our thoughts are with them and their families and friends.

...but this is why the dream has always been about "low height" or "low bridge" buses... RLH = Regent Low Height...

...and then there was Hooper. Roy Scheider passes...

I have a "normal" post today (below)... but I have to post this up as I just read it...

One of Sue's favourite movies is Jaws... so she will be saddened (as many are) to hear the Roy Scheider passed away Sunday night at the age of seventy-five.

From the left - Robert Shaw (Quint), Roy Scheider(Police Chief Martin Brody), and Richard Dreyfuss(Matt Hooper)

Although I enjoyed Jaws, for me, he'll always be Buddy Russo in The French Connection... and the other one I'll remember him for (because of a good family memory seeing a movie with the parental units,) Frank Murphy from Blue Thunder.

He will be missed by fans... and our thoughts are with his family and friends at this time...

CBC Article on Roy Scheider's Passing.

Categories: Kooky Schemes - What's happening/Being Suggested

Straightening out loose ends... Call this a "State of the Bus Address"...

As you may (or may not) have seen, we removed the thermometer and the "PayPal" buttons from the blog... This does not mean we've "given up" yet...

Granted, if you hadn't read about this yet... allow me to recap...

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

I was contacted by the fellow that runs the RLH Information Centre asking for the contact information that I'd accumulated for the fellow in Santa Rosa who is the current "caretaker" (owner) of RLH 3 (or "The One Old Green Bus" that this blog is about.)

He wanted it as he has a prospective buyer who would restore her... (he also, apparently, wants a "red" RLH too...)

He was VERY tactful and since he knew what the bus meant to us and why, and he did give me the option to "keep the information to myself" and possibly increase our chances of getting the bus...

If you don't know why THIS bus is so special to me and the whole family, I am BEGGING you to read the post at this link (click here). If nothing else, it might explain the "mania" about the bus...

Anyway, I didn't hesitate... I gave up the information. Better it be bought and preserved by someone soon as it's fate was in genuine question... better it "lives" without us than gets scrapped waiting for us.

Our fundraising to see our dream of owning "our" bus come true had been disastrous... and although things are steadily improving on our own finances, we were probably a year or even two away from being able to shoulder the expense of purchasing and then shipping "our" bus.

Therefore, as much as it genuinely pained me... and it does mean "giving up" on a large part of our dream... I had to put reality ahead of a dream.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

NOW, this (as stated,) does not mean we're COMPLETELY giving up... the sale of RLH 3 (or "our bus"... or "The One Old Green Bus"...) has not been completed by this other person yet (to the best of our knowledge,) and there's still a SMALL chance that we MIGHT find $20,000.00 in some odd way and "beat" the buyer to the punch... but this would not be accomplished with the "PayPal" and begging routine that offended so many...

So, those things are now gone.

The $391.00 collected was basically (after a little "discussion",) divided and given out equally to a few different local charities... no, none to our paranormal hobby stuff... (The "extra dollar" went to an online charity to help feed the hungry who are only asking for "One Dollar" in donations per browser... that helped even things out... and thanks to PayPal for linking to it!)... and all the graphics on the side bar removed.

I'm certain that this is giving those people who hated our efforts MUCH joy.

We are, however, hoping that maybe a corporate sponsor or the like might see our "ad" idea or perhaps some sort of patron who appreciates and will help a family and it's kooky vision... the dream may live...

...but that's about it.

IF we fail, the blog will STILL be called "One Old Green Bus" and will feature Regent Low Height 3 as a "motif"... but obviously the slant will be different.

We WILL still be trying to get an old bus for our "big plans" (day tripper,) but we WON'T be schilling on the blog for your "personal help" anymore... basically, if we get a "corporate sponsor" or even a kind "patron" who appreciates the family dream, we would be eternally grateful... but no more schilling...

In our eyes, if it happens, it happens.

Also, although there is a STRONG connection between our family and Regent Low Height 3 and it is our bus (or better phrasing, the bus that SEEMS to be for us,) if she is sold, I would now put some effort into seeing if maybe RLH 39 in Lake Havasu City, Arizona is available... or even another bus if one came up...

It is sad that the dream might die... and we tried hard to keep it going...

...but I told each and every one of our regular readers...

If we hadn't tried, we would never succeed... and we would constantly wonder if we could have achieved success.

...and I prefer knowing.

Besides, if this has been a "failure", it's had it's good moments... and it has been fun... and we have met some GREAT people in the process...

So it seems "hardly" a failure...

...and right now, who knows... perhaps there won't be a sale... perhaps we will "beat" the other buyer somehow...

Nil Desperandum...

...and this blog WILL carry on... 'cuz I enjoy blogging and sharing...

SO, TO SUM UP... No, our "dream bus" is not gone yet... but it's not looking too good... but we ain't pullin' the plug yet.

The small amount of money we collected has been donated to charities because, honestly, without a miracle, we are gonna have to give up and to be honest, $391.00 wasn't gonna make a lot of difference... whereas the smaller sums we divided it into will help others.

If we do lose our bus, the blog continues! We WILL leave up the idea of corporate or patronage help (especially if we set our sights on Arizona!) but we have already "pulled" our PayPal donate buttons and won't be "schilling" as much from our regular readers... in fact, you may have noticed we've already backed off a bit on that.

WHEN or IF Regent Low Height 3 sells or we must give up, OF COURSE I will announce it here... and I will not be TOO sad... as there will be a bus somehow in some way...

...and besides, my #1 priority for the next few months is getting my Sue back to full health... and sadly, not buses anyway.

So there you have it! Hang in there friends... the adventure AIN'T over yet... and even if the dream must go, it'll just be a change of direction, not a cancellation of the journey!

Oh, and to prove people LOVE a train-wreck... Since announcing that things don't look so hot with our bus, our hits have gone... well... insane.

I used to get about 1000 to 1200 unique hits per day...

RUBBER NECKERS!!!

Blog Your Blessings Sundays: Cuddle-Up Sunday

Blog yer Blessings

First off, I'm a heathen... that is to say, I don't go to church. I am a non-practising agnostic. is the line I give people when they ask my religion... and I have fairly good claims to Catholic, Protestant, Anglican, and Jewish roots.

Yet, I'm kinda with Albert Einstein who said his sense of God was his sense of wonder about the universe... and therefore, I don't practise any sort of dogmatic rituals... well, in terms of a formed religion.

That said, and I hope I didn't offend anyone, I wanted to say that this is why, save for formal affairs, I am not a church goer... or, realistically, not a "regular service" attend-er.

However, I can absolutely appreciate and note a blessing.

...and one of those blessings is why I was late posting today...

My blessing is lazy, 'slothy', cuddled-up Sundays.

You see, it's very, Very, VERY cold outside today... (Winter has returned to Toronto...) and Sue's okay... but not doing TOO well (see this link,) so she needs a little extra TLC type attention...

So, it's under some blankets, cuddled up on the couch... and a goodly DVD in the player for the day... perhaps some hot cocoa, popcorn... and a goofy lunch like Kraft Dinner...

To be able to enjoy such a day... that's a TRUE blessing...

In Answer of Tuesday's Blog...

I wuz TAGGED on Tuesday... but I went original! It was the old "Seven Weird Things About You" meme tag... and instead, I did fourteen... seven were true, seven were fake... only one person publicly played along... two people played by e-mail... and four people played by other messages... but I have HELD OFF giving the answers UNTIL NOW!!!

So, without further adieu...

#1: I have shaken hands with Prince Philip (Queen Elizabeth's husband) by accident.

TRUE! It was during a trip the royal couple made to Toronto in the late 1990's... and I was on a walk and ended up at a church where they were attending services. I had heard on the radio that their visit to the church and service had ended about an hour before I arrived, but I noticed a crowd and some members of The 48th Highlanders in formal dress uniform outside the church. I assumed they were getting ready to be dismissed and the crowd was watching the soldiers, so I jockeyed for a better place to see them as I know a fellow in the regiment. Well, imagine my surprise when, about a minute or less after arriving and finding my spot to try and see my old friend, a hand was suddenly thrust towards me which I shook instinctively... which was a good thing as, indeed, it was The Duke of Edinburgh's... The Queen and him were late leaving the church so the crowd WAS for them and not the 48th lads... and I've often wondered who I might have "nudged" out of the way when I had assumed the royal couple had already left... and how mad they were that I got a handshake and they didn't.

#2: I have kinda webbed toes... my doctors have all "noted" them which makes me uneasy.

FALSE! It sounded good though... so I included it. I did know two people who genuinely seemed to have webbed toes... and for some reason, while typing this, they came to mind so "Voila!"

#3: I have never broken a limb or even a major bone to this point in my life.

TRUE! (Touch wood...)

#4: I was trained as a marksman (in riflery) and am still a darned good shot!

TRUE! I've received a couple of awards for my marksmanship... and yet, I am an advocate of gun control.

#5: I have, unwittingly, participated in a "Legalise Pot" march.

FALSE! I'm not against decriminalization... but I'm not for legalization.

#6: I once had to pay for Keanu Reeves' donut at a Tim Horton's in downtown Toronto.

FALSE! I've never met the man... much less at a Tim Horton's.

#7: My birth was announced in the paper as my parents "completing their centennial project".

TRUE! It was 1967 which is Canada's centennial... and apparently, in a kind of sarcastic (but not so much) play on the amount of announcements in the paper about *this* centennial project and *that* centennial project, they announced my birth as such.

#8: I never completed university.

TRUE! I did attend to continue my education as an adult (I did go to college and completed high-school through a college program,) I couldn't afford to maintain my university education... so, I lasted about a year and a half before folding it up to join the "real" workforce full time.

#9: I had terrible acne as a teenager and was on antibiotics through many of those years.

FALSE! The Gods chose to ensure I was not prone to acne. I did have the odd "zit", but nothing major.

#10: I was born, raised in, and still live in (metropolitan) Toronto, Ontario, Canada... I've never lived elsewhere.

TRUE! Yup, I'm a minority in this city of three-plus million souls... Born, raised, and still living in Toronto.

#11: I have had a book dedicated to me by a Canadian author of some note.

TRUE! It's the book pictured above... "True Canadian Ghost Stories" by John Robert Colombo... Quite an honour!

#12: I was in a childrens' "talent show" on TV in Toronto as a very young fellow playing piano... I lost.

FALSE! I did take piano lessons as a kid... and my mother played (and still plays) piano... but I was never on TV for it... which is good 'cuz I was rotten. Granted, quitting lessons was easily one of the worst mistakes I think I ever made in my life.

#13: No matter what, I find it impossible to throw away old pill bottles when I finish a prescription.

FALSE! Sue might argue, as I do like to keep a couple of empty bottles around (for travel and whatnot,) but no, I'm not hoarding empty pill bottles.

#14: I can't stand the taste of any sort of fish.

FALSE! I love fish and chips... and even the occasional bit of salmon and even tuna. It's not my fave, but I don't hate it.

#3 - High-Five Fridays!

My Third High-Five Friday...

#5: If you HAVE to lose an award (in spectacular fashion,) it should always be to a blog like Live From Waterloo! (This ain't sarcasm, it's a great blog and Gabriel is a fine, fine person!)

My personal variation of the award as awarded to me...

#4: Speaking of the award, I would like to say "Congrats" to the other bloggers who were in the running for "Best Blog Post Series" with me! All of them top-notch blogs and I honestly was honoured to be in that group!

#3: If you wanna see people REALLY doing their homework in terms of the environment, I have nothing but admiration for The DeSmog Blog which is an excellent information source on all things climatic!

#2: (Not a paid endorsement...) The Mad Gringo deserves a big high-five... just 'cuz! (Go slow, folks!) The Mad Gringo rocks. Period. Yeah~!

#1: I haven't been paying enough to an old blogging friend... and that's Threecollie at Northview Diary. From pretty much DAY ONE Threecollie has been a friend to us on the blogsphere and like me, is good for almost daily updates! I will be by shortly, Threecollie... and sorry I've been so silent of late!

Nota Bella: I won't be doing a "Busly Saturday" tomorrow... instead, I'll be answering the big question(s) posed on my Tuesday "Tagged" Post... Stay TUNED!

Thursday Thirteen (32...1, 0, blast off!) - Thirteen Excuses... er, Reasons! Yeah! Reasons!!!

THURSDAY THIRTEEN!

Oh no he d'int! Yup, he, being me, has fallen back on the "excuse list"... to be honest, it's been a hard time at Chez Didier/Darroch and I'm exhausted and burnt out... and trying to think of something witty or engaging is just a little too difficult at the moment...

However...

Never let it be said I didn't give you VALUE for your browsing buck! Allow me to list...

Thirteen Excuses Reasons
(Some True, Some Not...) Why
I'm Not Doing a Super-Kick-Butt
Thursday Thirteen This Week!

...of which, some are true... and the others are not-so-true... You're job, figure out which excuse reasons are TRUE!

#13: You seen the movie Cloverfield? Well, it's not dramatic fiction, but kinda a documentary... and I've spent the last few hours single-handedly fighting a huge monster back into Lake Ontario and thus saving the city... of course, I was discreet so as not to bother anyone, so no one noticed... What can I tell you, I'm not one for praise and heaps of awards... I was just glad to save my city.

#12: Thanks to an UNSCHEDULED visit by Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II and HRH Prince Philip, I've been bogged down entertaining at the apartment closet palatial Didier/Darroch compound... Oh well, time to get more pigs in a blanket ready for the Duke... and the corgis have made ANOTHER mess on the carpet...

#11: Alien abduction. 'Nuff said.

#10: I was a victim of spontaneous human combustion. Luckily, it only took part of my left-foot's baby toe, but what with smoke detectors going off, fire extinguishers, and all... it's been a little busy.

#9: I'm too busy planning to take over the planet... all I need is an Armenian circus midget, two pounds of ground turkey, and a ten-pound lead weight and all will be ready!

#8: I'd sit down... try to be creative... but they kept calling me... over and over... they were relentless... organize us... Matthew, you must organize us!!!... and so, I kept going back and sorting my sock drawer at my sock's request. It's not so bad really, save when they tell me that the robotic monkeys are stealing my luggage.

#7: I was chasing robotic monkeys who were stealing my luggage.

#6: I kept being text message from some guy named Sam Lutfi who says he wants to "represent" me... The bugger just won't leave me alone!

#5: I am currently building the world's largest scale model of the world... at a one-to-one scale. It's taking longer than I thought.

#4: I came up with a perfect peace-plan for the Middle-East that had acclaim from some prominent diplomats on all sides and promised to ease tensions in the area... but I forgot to back-up the Word document and my danged computer crashed... the recovery document only said Hello, my name is Mat which I don't think will be enough to quell the issues.

#3: I had managed to produce a perfect "Grand Unifying Theory"... which would have blown away even Professor Stephen Hawking... but then I noticed I forgot to carry a two in the main equation of the formula and... well... then there was a Dukes of Hazard marathon on TV...

#2: I got called up to finally play in the National Hockey League... MY BIG BREAK!!! Sure, I'd be a forty-year old rooky... but what Canadian kid DOESN'T dream of being at centre ice for a face-off in the NHL!!! Then I found out it was the Toronto Maple Leafs who called... so I stayed home and re-sorted my sock drawer... again.

#1: There I was, thinking, "What harm could come! I'll just go to the donut store near the local Weight Watcher's joint and grab a dozen and come home to share 'em with Sue and the kid... I remember leaving the store when a seminar must have gotten out... and when I regained consciousness...

CANADIAN BLOG AWARDS!!! - I lost...

HAMMERED! (...and not in a good way.) Oh well, we tried... and we tied for LAST PLACE in the category for "Best Blog Post Series" at The Canadian Blog Awards... My losing streak continues... and a loser is me.

Granted, I tweren't whistling Dixie when I said that, looking at the other contestants, I was pretty honoured to be in the running... and I'm certainly glad that Live from Waterloo took the prize. (It was a GREAT series that I enjoyed very much.)

That said, my unbeaten streak of NOT winning awards continues! I believe I'm like zero for dozens...

I will now curl up in the foetal position and weep openly...

Wordless Wednesday: Revisiting the past...

This Wednesday, I tapped "The London Transport Museum Collection" again from their poster collection this time... Unknown to many people outside London, London Transport often commissioned some amazing artists to do artwork for their posters... Click here to view more than the few I've included below... if you like art, it's WELL worth the click!

...and just for some fun...

Although one could "hop" on a bus, I'd recommend using both feet.

...we can relate to the above one right now...

Sure, THIS bus is free... well, for a day...

A modern poster saying "Keep it green by using public transport"? Nope... it's from 1961!!!

...and the last one's for Sue... specially commissioned by London General (the bus company that would become London Transport) to aid in tourism...

Sue's Queen...

WRETCHEDLY TAGGED!!!

With Apologies to Gary Larson...

TAGGED! ...and by the woman I love no less! Oh the humanity!

I honestly don't mind memes... provided I pick and choose 'em, but when being FORCED into it as a tag!?!??!

Worse yet, it's one I've already done... TWICE! It's the old "Seven Weird Things" meme... So, how to improve on a theme... and make this meme a little different...

Well, I'm going to list FOURTEEN things... twice as many... some will be truth, other's will be not-so-truthful... your job, if you so choose, is to figure out which weird thing is accurate and true and which is a load of crappola.

So, if you want to play along, simply use the "Comments" area, note the numbers and which one's you suspect of being TRUE and which are FALSE!

The prize? Well, how about the feeling that indeed, you are a superior detective and saw through my VEIL O' LIES!

I'll post the "answers" on Saturday...

So, without further adieu...

#1: I have shaken hands with Prince Philip (Queen Elizabeth's husband) by accident.

#2: I have kinda webbed toes... my doctors have all "noted" them which makes me uneasy.

#3: I have never broken a limb or even a major bone to this point in my life.

#4: I was trained as a marksman (in riflery) and am still a darned good shot!

#5: I have, unwittingly, participated in a "Legalise Pot" march.

#6: I once had to pay for Keanu Reeves' donut at a Tim Horton's in downtown Toronto.

#7: My birth was announced in the paper as my parents "completing their centennial project".

#8: I never completed university.

#9: I had terrible acne as a teenager and was on antibiotics through many of those years.

#10: I was born, raised in, and still live in (metropolitan) Toronto, Ontario, Canada... I've never lived elsewhere.

#11: I have had a book dedicated to me by a Canadian author of some note.

#12: I was in a childrens' "talent show" on TV in Toronto as a very young fellow playing piano... I lost.

#13: No matter what, I find it impossible to throw away old pill bottles when I finish a prescription.

#14: I can't stand the taste of any sort of fish.

Now, I'm not gonna tag anyone back... if you wish to do THIS sort of meme, PLEASE FEEL FREE! ...but it's strictly a volunteer thing.

Again, I'll post the answers on Saturday this week...

Holy Positive E-Mails, Batman!

You do a rant when you're supposed to do a blessing, you expect a little negativity... but nope, that's not how it's played out...

My post yesterday which was in frustration over the "climate change deniers" was a touch vitriolic... but instead of garnering negative attention, my overall feedback has been shockingly positive!

I do remind those who are using my post for various things (like their own posts) to try and ensure you credit the links I gave more than my own ranting please...

Speaking of exciting "props" for my efforts, I will know how I did in The Canadian Blog Awards on Thursday morning. (They will announce on Wednesday, but they usually do it VERY late in the evening in Toronto and I'm usually in bed when they post!)

That's about all I have for this Monday morning so far... but I did want to address one comment/question which was e-mailed to me about my post yesterday...

The comment was about my obvious "Lefty" stance and my admiration (in apparently "carnal" terms,) of Al Gore...

What can I say... you read between the lines and found The Truth! Even though I did say I was angry about the politicization of the issue and that Al Gore has done science no favours, you saw THE TRUTH behind my intricate tangle of lies!

Since we're on the topic of things that MUST be true, allow me to save this person some time reading between the lines...

  • Tinky-Winky really WAS/IS gay and we WERE/ARE subverting your children.
  • If you play "Greensleeves" in the traditional 16th century arrangement backwards, it plays "Seveelsneerg" which is a former Soviet Communist propaganda sing-song number!
  • "One Old Green Bus" is a secret code to certain operatives that says, The Oprah/Obama is about to be deployed... Eliminate the Pregnant Chad now, now, NOW!
  • The Oompah-Loompahs (from the first, scarier movie... not the newer one with Johnny Depp) are indeed coming to get you!
  • In 1993, I (personally) was responsible for the cancellation of Hee-Haw.
  • I have videos of you line dancing poorly.
  • I HAVE HUGGED A TREE!!!!
  • Svend Robinson has been casing your home for valuables on OUR orders!

Okay, enough fun...

NOWHERE did I say that I did believe in the "Worst Case Scenario" when it comes to my stand on Climate Change... in fact, I did mention my anger at the politicization of the whole thing and how "science" should not be "politics"... but you prove (along with others) that this cannot be true... that OBVIOUSLY politics and science go hand-in-hand...

...but call me a goof, but if my political leader told me that there was a euphoric sense of well being and no penalty in terms of my health to standing on a highway in the winter in my altogether at night... I don't think I'll do it and I'll DOUBT my political leader...

ANYWAY, I've wasted enough good venom on this subject... my last post on Sunday had links to resources... wanna attack these things, attack them at their source. Wanna attack me? You won't change my mind... I still think pollution is bad... and I have covered the whole "bus" thing already in terms of that.

THIS IS AND ALWAYS HAS BEEN ABOUT POLLUTION for me... not politics... not religion... not other issues...

Saying things like You care more about a drowning polar bear then the children is beyond asinine. First of all, I'm a father... step-father albeit, but none-the-less... Second, I have never said I believed in the "worst case scenario" in terms of Global Warming, but if every polar bear DOES drown, I'll be worried, as will you, with getting my kids to higher ground and finding them drinking water. Now, I doubt this would happen... but you brought it up.

Y'know, I worry about crime, I worry about fire, I worry about carbon monoxide poisoning, I'm worried about my colon, heart, blood pressure, and cholesterol. I worry about the fate of some African countries, I worry about terrorist attacks, I worry about cancer, I worry about child abductions, I worry about nuclear weapons (but not nuclear power), I worry about the homeless, I worry about abandoned and cruelly-treated animals, I worry about man's inhumanity to man...

Do these concerns mean I am a horrible person that does not pay enough attention to YOUR causes? Because I have not devoted my life to YOUR cause, I'm evil?

If I am... what can I say...

Here I come! (...and I'll save you a bench!)

Remember: If you NEED to e-mail or comment about my stance on pollution or even the dreaded "global warming", click here, visit the links and argue with THEM. You change their minds, then let me know and I'll re-examine things at that point... but I will not be responding to things about this topic anymore... sorry, but I gots other things to do than argue with folks about pollution. You like it? That's fine... I'm not a fan of pollution... leave it at that.

Blog Your Blessings Sundays: THIS IS A RANT - and a "negative" blessing in a way... but stay with me here...

I apologise to each and every one of you coming by today... as this is a lengthy post that does not seem like much of a "blessing"... and I'm going to be honest with you, my blessing is that this one fellow who got under my skin is in the minority...

The post is about "climate change"... and although I am a believer in the fact that human-based pollution has caused issues, I'm not a "worst-case scenario" person and do not believe that we need to make extreme and radical changes ASAP... but to do nothing, in my eyes, is ignorant... because even if things aren't as bad as most of the scientists are saying, cleaning up our planet is something we should all strive to do... and to have this fellow and his ilk try to convince me that pollution is GOOD for the planet was too much to swallow...

So, my blessing of him being in a very tiny minority is accurate and stands... because this planet is all our blessing... and these idiots would ruin it because their political philosophy told them to.

Blog yer Blessings

I've done "negative blessings" in the past, and I'm not a fan of them, but this one takes that cake...

A while back I wrote an almost apologetic blog saying If you need to hate global warming... if you need to hate Al Gore... that's fine... but please, acknowledge ONE thing... "Pollution is Bad" and we should work to control it.

Seemed simple enough... and considering research and development are a huge part of the economy, it seemed to answer everyone's concerns...

We clean up and make some dough doing it!

Now, I admit... I'm a fan of the Kyoto protocols, but I'm also a realist and would like to have seen them brought in over a longer period of time... and perhaps even tempered slightly.

I also admit that I do not believe the ultimate "Worst Case Scenarios" with Manhattan under water in ten years and the like...

Don't even get me started on those people who think farm animals are to blame... or that we MUST get rid of EVERY car on the road... I don't buy that for a second.

...but...

I'm a VERY regular reader of things like New Scientist, Popular Science, and even Scientific American... heck, I'll still toss in Live Science for good measure... and therefore I can honestly say that in MY OPINION based on the STUDIES PRESENTED...

This planet's environment is getting overall warmer... and yes, at a greater rate than ever before... and yes, WE'RE adding to it.

I do NOT believe the scientists who are spearheading the "anti-climate change" groups (who are in a minority within real science... but saying this apparently is indicative that I have a "hive" mentality,) and although I'm not ignorant to think they are all "on the payroll of big oil companies", I am smart enough to source out the leaders/spokespeople of their side... and it REALLY doesn't look good.

Let's take the "big two"... one in Britain and one in America...

In America, we have a gentleman named Marc Morano. Marc is THE communications director for The U.S. Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works. Marc's claim to fame is the 400 Environmental Scientists claim... yup, he found 400 who said "Climate Change" was bunk... sure, he couldn't name them all, but he found them! You'll also notice Marc does not have the letters "D" and "R" in front of his name... this is because Marc is not a scientist... no, Marc's previous "position" was Rush Limbaugh's 'Man in Washington,' as he was a reporter and producer for the Rush Limbaugh Television Show. Obviously, this is a man who should talk to us about science!

Then, in Britain a fellow (and shockingly enough, he's one of the 400 scientists mentioned above,) by the name of Dr. Richard S. Courtney. Now, Dr. Courtney says it's all garbage... the climate change is nonsense... and he's also Technical Editor for CoalTrans International (journal of the international coal trading industry) and was a Senior Material Scientist of the National Coal Board (also known as British Coal) and a Science and Technology spokesman of the British Association of Colliery Management. Now, when it comes to learning about the harm within the realm of burning fuels, I know I trust a man who's daily bread is earned speaking on behalf of the coal industry!

What's weird is the amount of discredited and skewed scientists on the "denial" side vs. the amount on the "it's happening" side... it's a lopsided thing to be sure in favour of "it's happening"... I've done a quick bit of my own research (Google is a wonderful thing sometimes,) using Canadian sources (counting published papers from people with ANY university degrees in ANY discipline who say there is NOTHING to climate change or, climate change presents positive results for the planet vs. those with actual degrees in climatology or related disciplines only that say there is something to climate change,) and the number in Canada seems to be about One Denier to Twenty "Something's Happening" papers...
1:20 roughly in favour of man-assisted climate change...

See this link for someone else's study in the same vein...

Anyway, these two (Morano and Courtney) are a tip of the iceberg... so to jest.

Hey, don't feel bad... there's still medical doctors, lab technicians, and even (yes,) scientists who put out things like this... and I don't buy that either... and neither do the majority of doctors, lab technicians and even (yes,) scientists... and I assure you, my disbelief is not just to cripple our tobacco farmers... honest.

This is why "Peer Review" must stand...

For a scientific paper or even idea to stand, it must be reviewed by a body of peers... Sadly, not many anti-climate change papers can withstand peer review... but I'm told this is collusion, "the hive mentality", and a host of other things...

So, neutral science is biased... and biased science is correct.

Unhunh...

Hey, even the anti-climate change folks HAVE finally accepted the idea that to be taken seriously, they need to be peer reviewed... if only they understood that it must be a neutral review...

I also jumped up and SCREAMED that stepping outside one's door and saying, "It's cold out here! See!?! NO global warming!" was the equivalent of me stepping outside my door in spring of 2005 and saying, "See? No hurricane! There's obviously no such thing as Katrina hitting New Orleans!" and that when dealing with these issues, we need to look into ocean currents and the like... not simply how much snow someone needed to shovel in Sudbury, Ontario yesterday.

ANYWAY... allow me to continue...

Realistically, I know that because an American politician made this a cause celebre... and the current opposite number is a man who's family made all it's rather considerable fortune in oil... that those who supported the oil man's side would SCREAM from the mountaintops that the other side must be wrong... and yup, that's what happened...

...so, I said, "Fine! If your political philosophy is not capable of looking at all the data from a neutral source, then just admit this please... Pollution = Bad. You can hate Al Gore... You can say Climate Change is Bunk... you can still be very, Very, VERY "right"... but PLEASE say perhaps we should work on conserving fuel and cleaning up our piece of the Earth. Heck, you can even hate Kyoto... but why not clean what we can within reason?"

Seemed like decent logic to me...

They could STILL decry and deny climate change... but the mutual understanding (from both sides of the argument) of the benefits of reducing pollutants would be understood... it would come down to these points...

Do we need to do a lot RIGHT NOW or work slowly and methodically?

Do we work with the protocols at hand?

In other words, we need to do SOMETHING... not "nothing" or worse, adding to the issue.

This was my post... and although I presented half my case, I thought it was moderate... and I assumed that those on the anti-climate change might acquiesce at least on the concept that pollution was not a good thing.

Enter a blogger.

Oh, this blogger told me that C02 was FOOD FOR PLANTS (which is true in moderation... but he was directly indicating CO2 from burning fuels and coal... I did check...) and MORE (pollution from burning fossil fuels and coal) WAS BETTER... the blogger also took GREAT pains to say that they were not "right wing" so their denial was not based on political philosophy...

You'll notice the name "Tim Ball" bandied about in the small text above here... I'll give you folks some links to chew on at the end of this post about Dr. Ball the Climatologist!

Lies and half-truths.

Their blog reads like one of the the most skewed (to the right) source of information online... their "cause celebres" are all, oddly enough, pro right-wing agenda.

Now, before I go further... I have a "confession" to make which SHOULDN'T be a confession... but in North America, these morons have made it so it indeed is... I lean to the right on many, many issues... but unlike the "Conservatives" out there, I don't continence sexism or racism, and I most certainly do NOT ignore scientific data when "my party" tells me to. I do not base my political and social-philosophical views on my religious beliefs (mostly perhaps because I am an agnostic,) and I'm horrified when ANY other's do. In other words, I'm a Canadian Progressive Conservative... fiscally conservative... fiercely proud of my history and heritage... a monarchist... but with a mind to a greater social conscious... or, as the blogger I'm speaking of would say, I'm a Socialist-Communist who wants to give the entire Canadian GDP to China!

I'm sure you folks see this, right?

This blogger made the arguments...

It's cold outside!
I have a scientific report that says things!
The Antarctic Ice Sheet is Growing!
There's permafrost in Scandinavia where there wasn't any long ago!

...but the killer for me was that, in their eyes, Exhaust from burning coal and fuels is GOOD for the planet!

Although it's true, C02 is not toxic and in reasonable quantities, is good for plants and the Earth's biomass in general (Maier-Reimar, Hasselman, Climate Dynamics, 1987)... too much IS a bad thing... and MY complaint in my blog posts have been about the soot and other byproducts of burning coal and fossil fuels (which, oddly enough, are also tackled by Maier-Reimar, Hasselman, Climate Dynamics, 1987 as a problem... but again, that's inconvenient to this blogger...)

Simple test of my issue... go to your local store that sells live plants... buy one.

Take it to your home (preferably in Summer or Spring) and place the plant under the tailpipe of your car and run it for a few days...

Has the plant's health "improved"?

Hmmm... what do you mean it didn't??? Surely this blogger and TWO flawed scientific articles released by the "Clean Coal" people couldn't be wrong, could they???

Now, how is this blogger and their little hive of political myopics a blessing? Well, I have to remember... they are in the minority of thinking people... and will not really change what little movement and work that is underway to help clean our planet... and won't affect the future probably either.

Now, I'm CERTAIN this will be attributed to my "hive mentality"... but it isn't... it's based on my having children... and knowing what so called "mythical" (yet scientifically proven) political "pollution" will do. Click here to read that post... and Click here to read about how our "politically unsound/scientifically sound" efforts have worked on these issues.

This blogger, despite the links to a scientific publication that is (obviously) peer-reviewed proclaimed I had not "won" my argument that pollution is bad and should be cleaned up... nope... they honestly DO want to do MORE in terms of polluting our air (I kid you not!) as it's ever so good for us... apparently... Oh yeah, again, so is this.

...and of course, when they are trying to scream "YOU STINK!", they toss in the bus thing... despite the fact that...

(a) We're almost in a position of having to give up on the bus.

Well, hey now! I don't get how you figure polluting is a good thing, so we're even!

AGAIN... let me stress that I'm for debate... and I don't mind people saying "Global Warming/Schmobal Schmarming" and even using their sources regardless of origin... but PLEASE include that the ideas of conservation and research and development towards cleaner alternatives is a GOOD idea...

I would hope we all know that pollution is bad... but it's sad that some refuse to learn...

...but it IS a blessing they are in the minority...

As Max Planc said, Funeral by funeral, science progresses.

Before I take off... this new bit is scary...

Here's some other links for the peeps...

Notes on the book Cool it!- The Skeptical Environmentalist´s Guide to Global Warming by Bjørn Lomborg

Fraser Institute Fact Sheet shaky stuff...

We're a NEW EPOCH!

New Scientist's Global Warming Myths

(For the record, my sources above were called "biased lefty" by the blogger I mentioned... but remember, they aren't a "Right-Winger"... so it must be true!)

Oh, and since the blogger in question reads this...

Tim Ball!
Tim Ball!
Tim Ball!
Tim Ball!

...and if you still think "pollution is good", I entreat you to wrap your lips around a tail-pipe and breath deeply for your own health... and more realistically, ours.

Granted, I'm glad you made sure I knew you weren't a conservative right-winger... although, if you were, you'd have a proud heritage in Canada of acknowledging, encouraging, and generally helping scientific achievement and progress! (...and this coming from a fiscal conservative, monarchist, capitalist... with a strong connection to our military.)

#2 - High-Five Fridays!

Before I get started today... after the week we've had, I'm kinda HALF taking a day off tomorrow. There will be a post tomorrow... a small one... one that will have you SINGING and DANCING, I'm certain... but I'll be honest, I put it up with a "time stamp" last night and am taking a day to the kid and Sue... That said...

__________________________________________________________

"High Five Fridays" is a a GREAT mem in my estimation... and was started by bloggers who deal in "erotica" and therefore, certain links may be of a more "Adult" variety... If you see the dreaded "NSFW" (Not Safe for Work) or "NWS" (Not Work Safe) and you're of a more delicate constitution, please do not click on those links. That said, this new "meme" has a lot of potential... and I am glad it exists and plan on using it to it's fullest potential!

So, without further adieu...

My Second High-Five Friday...

#5: I have to give a "high-five" and a general "shout-out" to one of my favourite blogs, The Yellow Dog Granny, who has yet to fail to put a smile on my face! I mean, thanks to her I'm often caught saying "F*ckety-f*ck-f*ck!" and you gotta love anyone who names their cat "Little A$$hole".

#4: One to MsDemmie who always knows the right thing to say to cheer me and Sue up!

#3: The Canadian Blog Awards... At the time of writing this, I'm not sure if I'm a "winner" yet... but it's looking good... and I have looked at the competition and WOW! It really IS an honour just to be in the running!!!

#2: Speaking of the blog awards, thanks to James Bow for the vote of confidence! It's always good to hear of another person passionate with Canada's history!

...and number one this week...

#1: Seems like a cop-out and everyone pretty much knows them, but DEAR GOD don't most of us owe a smile or dozen to I Can Haz Cheezburger? One of the most-sung (and deservedly so!) blogs/websites out there... and it's a RARE day I don't find something wonderful on it!

Visiting fellow High-Fivers is encouraged! If you participate, leave the link to your High-Fives in others comments (please note if NSFW - Not Safe for Work).
