Happy New Year's Eve!

Happy end of 2007 folks! As I've said in previous posts, it's been an okay year... kinda an odd holiday season, but overall, pretty good.

I do have my usual complaint at this time of year...

Yup... honours list comes out... and I ain't on it AGAIN. No OBE for 2007.

I can hear the SAME tired excuses already... Oh! Matthew! Well, we MEANT to put you on the list, but wouldn't you know it, the pen we were using ran out of ink! or something like Well, we would have, but things got caught up in the mail and... well... you know how it is!

I'm beginning to think the household is AVOIDING me...?

I mean, Sue SHOULD become "Lady Didier", don't you think???

...and I promise not to make everyone call me "Sir Matthew" (for the most part...)

Anyway...

Sue and I have a GREAT night planned... and we're gonna party like it's New Year's Eve 1999!!!!

On that note, I am taking tomorrow "off blogging" most likely... to celebrate being away from the office one last time for a long while... and spend some goofy time with Sue and the kidollo... maybe walk der puppies...

...granted, saying that (like last time,) means SOMETHING will come up and I'll be FORCED into blogging... so perhaps I'll say it THIS way...

Currently, I'm not planning on posting a new blog tomorrow, January first, two-aught-aught-eight, but this could change without notice.

There. That works!

From The Didier/Darroch Clan,
The Happiest of New Years and Best Wishes
for a Prosperous and Healthy 2008!
...
From us to you!

Blog Your Blessings Sundays: 2007's Best

TIME IS RUNNING SHORT FOR ONE OLD RED BUS! Sure, we're still holding a family dream about our own One Old Green Bus, but we're very concerned over the fate of Barton Transport #512. It's not far from Chicago and $2,200.00 and some love will save it from being scrapped. Please consider saving this wonderful bus. Click here for details...

Blog yer Blessings

Fast away the old year passes... as the song says...

See?

Anyway, I decided to go through all my old BYB posts for the last year and pick my favourites... five that I will link to... and one I'm re-posting...

So without further adieu, here's my "Top Six" starting with numbers 6 through 2 links...

#6: Time with my Sue...

#5: Loving Touches...

#4: Logic, Respect, and Common Sense...

#3: Peter Gzowski...

#2: Life...

...and #1...

All I want is a room somewhere, Far away from the cold night air.

I went grocery shopping on my lunch break at work on Wednesday... there's a large "upscale" grocery store not too far from the office and Sue asked me, despite the extra expense, to pick some things up for home... and in front of me, walking along Wellington Street were two women. Both were dressed rather nicely and warmly (it's been unseasonably cold in Toronto right now)... it was obvious by their lack of hurry and their conversation (which was clearly audible) that they had come from a lunch date with one of the women's husbands and were heading back to their car... probably to head home.

Unfortunately, my clothing is not-so-nice... but that's as much a factor of time constraints and personal taste (where to shop) as it is not having enough money to buy a new jacket, so since I was not dressed for the weather like them and rather cold, I breezed past them in order to shorten my trip. This is a fairly easy trick on the wide sidewalks downtown and didn't ruffle their feathers.

At the corner of Wellington and Yonge sat a young woman bundled up in ragged clothes and a sleeping bag. She was obviously homeless... or at least, not doing too well... she was dirty from the city's soot and smog and was shivering by a lamp standard with an old paper coffee cup in front of her with a couple of coins in it... she was hoping for spare change from passers by.

I reached into my pocket and dropped about $2.50 into her cup... not much, but it's what I can afford right now... I don't know if she thanked me or even noticed... really, that wasn't important... she wasn't openly soliciting for spare change save the cup with a few dimes in it and seemed far more concerned with staying warm than the activities or inactivities of passers by.

Once across the busy street, the two women were now on my heels after being able to catch up with me at the traffic light, they started in with what could only be described as a "stage conversation" for my benefit after they saw me toss my money into the cup...

"You know that she's strung out on something." one said.
"Giving them money only encourages them." said the other.

What neither of these two women could know is that the man in front of them who so foolishly parted with his coins was once almost in her position...

My mother and father had been married for many, many years... and I was, to say the least, a "problem child"... "troubled teen" perhaps would be better.

Either way, when my father suddenly passed away when I was seventeen, after some rough few months where my mother was in serious doubts about her future (which wasn't really too shaky as our father had provided well for us... he was an insurance executive after all,) I was given "the boot".

"I've done kids." were the last words I heard before heading out with the clothes on my back and really, little else.

I managed to "couch surf" with a friend for a few days... but ended up not being terribly welcome with his parents... and although it was foolish, I ended up lying when I knew my presence was becoming unwanted and saying I had a place to go... when I didn't... and yes, spent some time sleeping in parks.

Weirdly enough, I had too much pride to admit I needed a home and help from people and preferred self-imposed homelessness to being a burden.

I never panhandled during that time... I tried to earn what food I found by doing "odd jobs" or by offering to do help where I could in exchange for food... mow lawns, help move furniture, even carrying groceries for people.

Luckily, my "homelessness" didn't last too long (just a few weeks in the Summer,) and soon I was living with one of my sisters in her apartment...

After "settling in" with the sister, I managed to find my way back into school, a decent job, and eventually even start a career.

...but I will never forget how close I came...

...nor how much a small amount of money (even $2.50) would have meant to me during some of the colder and leaner days...

I won't lie to you... there ARE homeless folks who HAVE chosen that path for various reasons ranging from not wanting to live by certain rules to "habits" and "addictions" that led them there. There are some who didn't choose that path, but due to usually mental illness, there they are.

...more importantly, I found out that although a minority, there were a good number like me... roof over their head and food in their belly one day and through a twist of fate or something else, they are on the streets the next day.

I don't know what this girl's story was... I had to rush to accomplish my tasks and get back to my office and couldn't chat even had she wanted to... but I know that a lousy $2.50 is enough for a hot coffee and a small snack inside a nice, warm donut shop... and a respite from the lamp standard for a few brief minutes until the staff or management would kick her back out onto the street.

All those years ago, when I was in the park, I was dirty... cold... tired. I heard people comment when I was forced to be somewhat near them (I tried to avoid people until I could get to the public washroom and clean up a little)... and the words stung. "Get a job" was something I heard a couple of times... even though I hadn't elicited any "conversation". The folks who said it felt I was "benefiting" from their helpful advice, I 'spose... though both times, the words were not said as much spitted out with venom.

Get a job... with no bus fare, no clean clothes, dirty hair and body, empty stomach, little or no sleep, damp from dew... yeah, perfect conditions to apply for any position.

Oh, and how to contact me if they had an opening? Please find me in between Allens Gardens and Serena Gundy Park... on a hill, behind a few large birch trees that affords me some weak form of privacy and security when I'm sleeping. Oddly enough, being the 1980's, I didn't have a cell phone nor Wi-Fi internet access...

Granted, how many homeless folks have you seen nowadays with a laptop and flip-phone?

These two women I started talking about have the blessing which I'm about to mention... and don't realise it... I guarantee it. The young lady doesn't have my blessing... yet... I hope she finds it some day soon and I'm certain that, like me, she most likely won't take it for granted.

My blessing is the roof over my head and food in the fridge. I'm thankful to not be truly hungry... and to know that tonight, there's a warm home, warm family, warm pets... and a comfortable, if small place to lay my head.

I won't lie... I wasn't handed these things... I worked for them. I earned them... but if not for a bed-couch in an apartment with my sister, would I be where I am today?

I don't think those around me know how much these blessings of warmth and comfort mean to me... I was fortunate, I only stared into the eyes of the beast for a few scant moments... many don't have siblings or friends or anyone to rescue them and are stuck with their lot until someone gives them one ounce of stability to work from.

Maybe I was wrong... maybe my coins would be used for booze or drugs... maybe I'm encouraging to poor girl to stay in the street...

...or maybe, with that quarter change after her coffee and donut, she'll make a call to someone to help her out...

...or maybe she won't make a call, but will have a little food and warmth for a short time...

I'd like to think it will be one of the two latter choices... but who knows.

One thing though, after my own experiences and working since then when possible helping others in similar situations, (of course I've volunteered at homeless shelters and food banks,) it's the best thing I could do on that spot at that time to share my blessings.

One wonders what "blessing" the two women coming from their lunch shared that Wednesday and with whom? My only thought about them was, You have no idea... and honestly, I hope you never have to find out first hand.

...another thought occurred about the women too... I wonder if either of them have daughters... because that girl was someone's baby once... and is most likely still someone's daughter...

...and I don't know if I could stand knowing that one of my kids was in that position... but it they were, I hope someone would drop in that $2.50 for them.

Spacer

For the record, my nasty story happened over twenty-years ago now... and I managed to finish college and soon I'll be announcing some goodly news about my current career*... and my mom and I mended fences long ago... but that's a story for another time...

* - Editor's Note: After publishing this, I announced my new (current) job.

Stolen 2008 Survey! (No one asked, but what the heck!)

I know... I could... I SHOULD do a "Busly Saturday" post and catch everyone up... but if you scroll down you'll see that I kinda did that yesterday... so in an epic moment of originality failure sorry, I mean to say in lieu of doing something actually worthy on the blog no, that's not right... AH! In an inspired moments thanks to my new blogger friend at exhausticated.com, here is...

THE
2007 SURVEY

...which may or may not be flying around FaceBook.

Now, the wonderful lass at exhausticated.com and her friends are no doubt a touch younger than Sue and I at the advanced and crippling age of forty, so this may seem a little stilted... and I apologise in advance.

So without further adieu, as I know you're waiting on pins and needles, here's the SURVEY!

___________________________________________________

DRINKING BUDDY OF THE YEAR

Geez, I'm (mostly) a teetotaler... so this is difficult. I 'spose I could qualify coffee... but I only drink one cup in the morning... that's it.

So, all things considered equal, I have to pick the person I most like spending time with... which, and it sounds like a cop-out, but it's true, is Sue!

___________________________________________________

LIFETIME SERVICE AWARD (longest friend)

Part of me wants to poke a little fun and say it's either my old buddy Nancy N., another old and dear friend Jennifer S. because they are both rather "long" friends being over six-foot tall... but I have a feeling this is NOT what is being looked for as an answer here...

Using Sue again would be a cop-out for sure... but really, she is my closest friend (amongst many other things) and we've known each other for a long time...

Life has tossed many curve balls at me and for various reasons, I am not the best person at "old friendships" and keeping up with folks... and in some cases that's very sad... in other's, it's probably a big blessing... so I'm going to list someone who, oddly enough, I haven't seen in a couple of years... mostly because, I know that WHEN we do see each other, we both "bounce" off each other and our dynamic is funny, happy, and mirthful! So, I'm going to say a chap named Wolfgang B. wins.

Anyone who hasn't seen me in two years that is GUARANTEED to refer to me as leipschen and I to him as dahling has to win.

...that, and I will always admire him for coming up with THE BEST pen name ever... "Vandura Schpankwagon".

___________________________________________________

NEWCOMER AWARD

It's been more than a year, and he probably doesn't know how much I appreciate his counsel and efforts, but Chris L. by his efforts has been a true friend to both Sue and myself...

___________________________________________________

HIGH POINT OF THE YEAR?

Da new job. Back in my field with a better income!

___________________________________________________

LOW POINT OF THE YEAR?

Probably anytime we had to re-do a budget in the early parts of the year...

___________________________________________________

BEST HOLIDAY?

I really enjoyed Halloween... and for all the weirdest reasons. Basically, it's a family thing.

___________________________________________________

YOUR SONG FOR 2007?

Oooo... tough one... possibly the theme to Dexter... or The Ghosts of Motley Hall... but because it was stuck in Sue's head for much of the year, Blue Oyster Cult's Godzilla wins.

___________________________________________________

MOVIE FOR 2007?

NOT a new release (shocking, I know...) but a purchase we made EARLY THIS YEAR from the local "Bargain DVD Bin"... The Court Jester... because, as we all know, the pellet with the poison's in the vessel with the pestle. The chalice from the palace has the brew that is true!

...or was it the pellet with the poison's in the flagon with the dragon, the vessel with the pestle had the brew that was true?

How about "Biggest Let Down" movie...

Hearing that a re-make of "The Omega Man" was done with Will Smith, I got purdy excited... I mean, Mathias and Lisa legitimately frightened me and yeah, I admit... I like Will Smith...

Well, we raced out and watched I Am Legend and it started off cool... and then fell off a cliff.

Instead of a cult of bizarre flesh-eating psychopathic zombies, we got "Night of the Living Dumb" zombies in poor CG with all the psychological fear that one gets from todays torture-porn horror flicks... yawn.

The ending of the original was so cheesey, it was fabulous... the ending of this one was just cheese. Not even good cheese. I was very let down... and I missed Mathias and his followers outside Chuck Heston's window calling to Lisa.

...oh, and speaking of Chuck... if you didn't know already, Soylent Green is made of people.

___________________________________________________

WHO DID YOU SPEND VALENTINES WITH?

SUE!

...and our assorted animals and the kidollo.

Romantic, no... loving, yes.

I owe Sue SEVERAL romantic getaways... and mean to pay that debt with glee!

___________________________________________________

BEST RELATIONSHIP?

MAX AND KIPLING!

...kidding, of course it's Sue.

___________________________________________________

WHAT WERE YOU FOR HALLOWEEN?

A tired, broken-down, media-weary paranormal researcher/investigator and computer technician.

The crying shame is, as a War of 1812 re-enactor, I have SEVERAL sets of period clothing that would be a superb costume... but as the kidollo does NOT like being upstaged, these are usually left at home. :(

___________________________________________________

RESTAURANT OF THE YEAR?

Gosh, I can hear the gentle strains of Nat King Cole telling me that we Don't Get Around Much, Anymore... but that is changing.

For various reasons, I'm going to pick St. Louis Bar and Grill on Bloor in Toronto.

___________________________________________________

BOOK OF THE YEAR?

I could tell a VERY funny and at the time, seemingly tragic tale of Christmas Book Woe... but I won't... instead, I'm going RETRO and saying that THE best book I picked up this year was THE ORIGINAL (hardcover, first-edition from 1976) BOOK OF LISTS which I bought for ONE DOLLAR at a very cool used book store on Bathurst just South of Bloor. They have a "jumbled basement" that Sue and I picked through where all books found in it are a buck. We were in heaven!

The real downer for me this year was after THOROUGHLY enjoying reading the first two Dexter books (which, if you're a fan of the show, you SHOULD read,) I read the third one, and in my eyes, it blew... it REALLY blew... it REALLY BLEW chunks. It sucked.

I believe the words I would use would be "dreadful", "wretched", and "horrible"... and for all the WRONG reasons.

I honestly believe that Jeff Lindsay purposely sabotaged the character in this book to spite the TV show...

___________________________________________________

BEST DECISION MADE THIS YEAR?

We quit smoking in September and have stayed "weed free".

___________________________________________________

WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS FOR NEXT YEAR?

Romantic vacation(s) with Sue. Clear debts. Acquire and Fix bus. :)

___________________________________________________

MOST STUPID IDEA WHEN DRUNK?

Well, again... I'm a teetotaler... but I still had my share of really DUMB ideas...

...in many ways, I regret this blog.

Frightening, eh?

When I really got rockin' with my paranormal research and investigation in 1997, I had a person ask me if I REALLY wanted to be remembered as the "whacko" who looked into "spooks and goblins"... because, and he was right, probably 75% of the general population laugh at these things as being imaginary or stuff to scare little children. I go into this in detail in this rather oddly popular post according to my stats...

Basically, I now have to accept that I'm known as the goofy guy with the ghost thing... and now, in some circles, the "cyberbegger" at worst, the "dreamer" at best. The former is honestly much less personally stigmatizing than the two latters in some ways.

Still, I do know I really only had two choices... maintain my dignity and guarantee failure letting down Sue and kid with the "C'mon now! That's only a pipe dream!" logic... or swallow a bit of pride and try and have a chance for success... obviously, I chose the latter... but because of that stigma, I do often regret this rather blatant dropping of my drawers in the blog here.

Realistically, I do like the outlet, and probably would "blog" regardless... but every so often, something bites me on the butt about this venture... and yeah, I occasionally feel ashamed.

___________________________________________________

TV SHOW OF THE YEAR?

Dexter Season II didn't fail to impressed... but we also got in the "care package" of British documentaries... including some David Starkey, Tony Robinson, and James Burke things... all of which were EXCELLENT!!!!!!!

___________________________________________________

MOST LOYAL FRIEND?

Sorry if you think it's a cop-out, but Sue hands down.

___________________________________________________

BIGGEST CHANGE OF THE YEAR?

New Employment!

___________________________________________________

BIGGEST PAIN IN THE NECK AWARD?

Toss up... but related... The media with our studies... and the person who LOVES the media who thinks he's in our studies... and is pretty obviously to us a little... um... well...

No... that's not right... when a train is wrecked, it doesn't charge people money to do dumb things and it doesn't make people laugh at other, more secure and "proper" trains.

___________________________________________________

KISS OF THE YEAR?

Anytime with Sue.

___________________________________________________

BIGGEST D****BAG AWARD?

See BIGGEST PAIN IN THE NECK AWARD above and the related link on the words "The Media".

___________________________________________________

NEW YEARS RESOLUTION?

Spend WAY more loving and quality time with Sue.

___________________________________________________

There were another FORTY-ONE things to comment on... but I'll stop here.

I believe, like most people, the year had it's ups and downs... but honestly, mostly ups... and that made 2007 a good year that will be remembered by this weirdo as being a pretty damned good year, all things considered equal...

Now, off to the great unknown... what will 2008 hold??? Will it hold the bus? Will I get over my inferiority complex about the quest? Will Sue wise up and run away with a cabana boy? Will the return of John Cena to the WWE mix be all it should? Will Kipling stop peeing on my dirty clothes when he's angry? Will the kidollo learn that Apple products really AREN'T the best???

It all remains to be seen!

We're skating to year's end...

You can always tell when the end of December is upon us with several naturally occurring phenomena... The days start (thankfully) getting longer... and colder with the approach of REAL winter here in Canada... there's less wildlife flittering about... snow is more common... and the buzz is all about awards shows and "Year End Perspectives".

I really only intend to do ONE bloggish "re-hash" in the foreseeable future (I'm going through to pick out my favourite "Blog Your Blessing" to re-do this Sunday,) but looking about the interwebs, I can't help but notice so many of the large websites and news sites already popping up with their "TOP" (this or that) "OF 2007" bits and pieces... allowing us all to get that lovely nostalgic feeling about the last twelve months.

I don't want to re-link or re-hash too much about what's happened here... because like the getting way too repetitive tagline that WAS going on almost all my "Busly Saturday" posts, there's just not a whole lot to talk about when it comes to matters busly on this here blog.

This COULD be seen as a bit of a bummer... but I don't think it is... realistically, I really did like it when Sharon said our dream was an anticipated adventure and yeah, in some ways, getting there may indeed be half the fun.

Actually, I am looking forward to one day telling you all about our work on restoration... our travels... and all the REAL goodly stuff that should happen once we have a bus... but for now, we are enjoying this odd ride... if for nothing else, for the creative juices it's managed to have flow.

One thing that SHOULD be seen within the next little while here is an idea to raise funds that is a kinda hybrid from a suggestion by Candy Minx that I think might fly VERY well and be actually VERY good for not only us, but those who participate in the venture. It's requiring a lot of server-side work first, though... so it's under wraps until launch-time.

...but I go through the posts of this year... starting out with the horrid and low paying gig I had to do until April... and where I am now... and where I believe we will be within the next twelve months... and all I can say about 2007 is was an improvement from 2006... and 2008 looks to be an improvement on this year.

That's pretty positive stuff.

Will 2008 be "The Year of The Bus"?

I'll be 120% honest with you... with the exception of a few momentary bits of blindingly optimistic light, I knew that 2007 would NOT really be the year that the dream came true...

I am, however, VERY optimistic about 2008... but I get the feeling it won't be the year of THE bus... but the year of "A" bus... in other words, not our beloved RLH 3 which is THE "Old Green Bus"... but we'll end up with another one.

This MIGHT sound depressing or defeatist... but here's my two lines of thinking...

  • It's more of a fiscal reality to find another bus... closer to home and not as expensive in either initial purchase or repairs.
  • Right now, although RLH 3 is undeniably special to us, the real goal is now proving something to our kids... that a whacky dream, tossed into the universe, might come true... and as much as Sue and myself hold RLH 3 VERY dear to our hearts, it's more important to make sure that the larger picture is seen... and that an old double-decker arrives to prove to the young'uns that, indeed, anything is possible. Truth to tell, they will only see the old bus... it wouldn't compute that it isn't "THE" bus to them... and they will see it as a perfect victory.

So, on those thoughts, we will STILL hope for RLH 3 and it will still be the main "thrust", we will also keep those options open.

I guess the other sad thing I have to admit is that the older kids know we're a bit looney... the youngest one has an inkling, but still finds our... um... "eccentricities" appealing... and at the age of twelve, I have probably only one year to either make her believe in miracles a little... or, as they say on these interwebs... show nothing more than this endeavour of ours as an...

Okay, I was just looking for a way to work that image in...

I doubt it will be THAT traumatic, but hey, it would be great to ignite a little magic...

Anyway, we will maintain... and for the here and now, 2008 will start off pretty much like 2007... but we maintain hope.

Who knows? Maybe we WILL get "Our" Old Green Bus... it's out in the universe... let's see what happens this coming year!

Don't hate me 'cuz I'm cleanin' up...

I can hear the knives sharpening from some quarters... 'cuz yes, I'm cleaning up my linky love on the old sidebar from heck.

It has come to my attention... oh, that's a bit of a lie... it has ALWAYS been an issue I've been aware of, but indeed, it WAS brought to my attention by a recent viewer that MANY of my links on the sidebar are to long neglected blogs... and it's time to do sumthin' about that.

Basically, I'm going to visit EACH and EVERY blog and roll through it with a fine-tooth comb. If there's been NO updates within the last 90 days, I'm nuking the link.

This is NOT a "shot at" these blogs or bloggers... or even some form of disrespect... it's basically to ensure that readers here who DO use the links will find active blogs with newer content for their online time... It's also going to kill some links I "reciprocated" with that were obviously more interested in an attempt to improve Google page ranks and the lot with zero effort.

_______________________________________________________

Also, I have dropped a few links already to some blogs that ARE still active... this is because I've decided that if your blog is either blatantly racist, homophobic, or nothing but cynical name-calling on a level of a poor man's schoolyard bully... I really don't want to give you any traffic.

Masking racism, sexism, or any type of intolerance as a "political philosophy" OR stating that you have the right to "hate" with little discrimination lest you be labeled "Politically Correct" is dumb, stupid, vapid, and ignorant. You can have strong views... and I often agree to disagree with people... but if you pushed the envelope in my eyes, I nuked you. I cannot "promote" people who genuinely seem to be only able to hate.

If you recognise yourself in the above statements, chances are you've mistaken "Political Correctness" for "Common Courtesy and Understanding" in my eyes and yup, somewhere in your blog, you crossed a line and I had enough.

Thursday Thirteen (26 in a series of NEVER ENDING LISTS!!!) - Lessons in Horror...

THURSDAY THIRTEEN!

Twas the Thursday after Christmas, and all through the Palatial Didier/Darroch West-End Compound... Nah, I gotta MOVE ON from the Christmas-y stuff and into something more generic... like my Thursday Thirteen this week...

Thirteen Lessons We Must All Learn from Horror Movies

Did I throw you a curve there?

NOT SANTA CLAUS!

Okay, what brought THIS topic up is Sue's and my Christmas this year. Being that all three steplings celebrated with their dad (who we get along with well... it was an amicable split between Sue and he so it's all okay if anyone was worried...) Sue settled in for one of her favourite past times... watching horror flicks.

This, oddly enough, is NOT as odd as it would sound on Christmas as, indeed, Victorian Christmases often revolved around "spooky stories" and loads of ghostly lore... because Halloween, as it's celebrated now, was NOT celebrated until the 1930's in North America... and not until VERY recently in other places... so ghosties and ghoulies and things that went "bump" in the night were saved for Christmas. The most famous "pupose written" ghost story for Christmas was Dickens' A Christmas Carol or "Scrooge" to most now-a-days... but if you look back, you'll find MANY scary stories published during the Edwardian and Victorian age for Christmas time.

So, in Sue's eyes, she's just carrying on a time-honoured Canadian tradition.

Without Further Adieu...

Lesson One: If you feel you are being drawn to a small town by unseen forces or you're just being compelled to the town for no seemingly good reason, DON'T GO TO THE TOWN! In fact, avoid the town like the black death.

Lesson Two: Picking up hitchhikers is not a good idea.

Lesson Three: Cell phones are your friend. If you're driving through a dark spot, make sure you HAVE a good cell signal and that your battery is charged. If you have a breakdown at night, STAY IN THE CAR and wait until morning.

Lesson Four: Stay away from... um... uh... people of "easy virtue"... unless you can run faster than them and won't mind having bits of their brain matter or blood spray hit you.

Lesson Five: Before buying a home, if the real estate agent even HINTS that the house might be "stigmatized" by a past crime or death, and when you're looking around, something kinda freaks you out like a door closing on it's own or "whispering voices", DON'T BUY THE HOUSE.

Lesson Six: If Karen Black, Adrienne Barbeau, Sarah Michelle Geller Prinze, or Rob Zombie live anywhere near you, MOVE IMMEDIATELY.

Lesson Seven: If you see blood ANYWHERE in your home in larger quantities than one might expect from a paper-cut, LEAVE THE HOUSE IMMEDIATELY AND CALL THE POLICE. Let them go in to the house alone, too... and stay WELL back while they look.

Lesson Eight: If you have successfully fended off a killer and he/she/it appears to be "dead", the French have this wonderful thing called a "Coup De Grâce". Click here to learn more about it... and USE IT if you're in that situation.

Lesson Nine: If you have administered the Coup De Grâce, don't be a moron... MOVE AWAY to a VERY safe distance just in case... and NEVER turn your back to the killer.

Lesson Ten: Heels on boots or shoes = Bad. Chances are, if you're in heels, you WILL survive a horror movie (provided you don't screw up the rule below,) but you WILL hurt your leg or ankle and end up "limping" away from the killer or "bad guy" and that's no fun.

Lesson Eleven: No matter what, DO NOT smoke drugs, drink excessively, do something "cool and illegal", or have sex if you are in a horror movie. These are sure-fire ways to ensure a rapid but painful demise.

Lesson Twelve: If you find yourself in a place where an excessively creepy kid keeps talking at you in seemingly weird jumbles... things like...
One of you for one of them...
...or...
He's coming... again...
...over and over... it's a VERY good time to leave. FAST!

Lesson Thirteen: Many comedians point this out, but it's SO true! If you're in the "haunted house" or whatever and you see something weird or hear a weird sound, this is NOT the time to split up and search for ANYTHING.

Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II - On YouTube!

I am actually a monarchist and therefore I am FIGHTING the urge to work in the infamous "Chris Crocker/Leave Brittney Alone" video on YouTube into this post about The Queen's Christmas Address being online with the rest of the YouTubers... and I apologise for the disrespect of even squeezing it in with the above line...

That said, I am glad that the household and indeed, her Majesty has embraced technology and YouTubed the annual Christmas message... Allow me to share...

It is a somewhat tradition here in our home to listen to or watch the Queen's Christmas message... which continues, but has moved "online"!

So, since this is a "tradition"... but now it's on the dread interwebs... and I feel REALLY weird about calling anything "internet related" a "tradition" because, c'mon now... the internet is a pretty "new" thing... what does one call this?

I'll have to give this some thought...

It was not an "Apple" Christmas for us...

WORDLESS WEDNESDAY BELOW... This post is just me venting my spleen at "pop-culture consumerism".

TIME IS RUNNING SHORT FOR ONE OLD RED BUS! Sure, we're still holding a family dream about our own One Old Green Bus, but we're very concerned over the fate of Barton Transport #512. Don't get me wrong... everyone had a fine holiday here at the homestead, but after having the PRAISES of a certain computer companies product sung as if the employees of said company can do no wrong, have nothing but brilliant ideas that never fail, and who's farts, apparently, issue no odour... I needed to see this... even those it's a bit old...

For the record, Macs are FINE... and Vista DOES suck... but realistically, as someone who's been in the field as a professional technician for almost fifteen years, realistically, I'd still prefer a PC over a Mac...

...now, to address those "products" from Apple...

  • Leopard sucks and is almost as buggy as Windows Vista.
  • iPhone is a beta-product that gives the original manufacturer WAY too much control in the aftermarket... ask anyone who now owns an "iBrick".
  • iPods are not BAD... but they are expensive for what they are... and I dislike the "non-changeable battery".
  • Upgrading an iBook or indeed, any Mac, is about as easy as neutering a wild Bengal tiger without anaesthetic.

Sorry, but I had to get that out of my system.

Last week, I did London Transport image of wintery scenes... with Christmas now behind us, here's some "Christmas Themed" bus images... You have NO idea how hard it is to find "Christmas Themed Bus Images"!!!!
:)

I did my best...

Wish this was hangin' from our tree... sadly, it wasn't.

Close-up of another ornament... not too shabby!

Wooden Bus - Made by elves, no doubt!

You'd think die-cast toys were "elven" as well, but no... many seem to be made by DOGS!!! Who knew Corgi's were so good with metal???

Uh... Wha... Are you here? What gives? It's Christmas!

TIME IS RUNNING SHORT FOR ONE OLD RED BUS! Sure, we're still holding a family Christmas wish for our own One Old Green Bus, but we're very concerned over the fate of Barton Transport #512. It's not far from Chicago and $2,200.00 and some love will save it from being scrapped. Please consider saving this wonderful bus. Click here for details...

Oh... that's right... if you're here on the 25th, this is indicative of one of four possibilities...

#1: You're online wishing "online friends" Season's Greetings...

#2: You don't celebrate Christmas...

#3: You're bored and killing time on Christmas until the next bit of "festive stuff" starts...

#4: You are THAT addicted to the Internet.

If it's number four... I can't help you... and as a technician, I do feel for you and wish I could do something more than scream "GO OUTSIDE AND PLAY!!! REAL LIFE IS AN OPTION YOU KNOW!!!" and otherwise give you the same song and dance that probably all your family and friends give you when they notice you haven't slept or eaten properly in days.

If it's number one, and you're here wish us a Merry Christmas, we thank you kindly and wish you and your's a very Merry Christmas and the Happiest of New Years!

If it's the second option above, we still wish you a Merry Christmas with NO disrespect intended (see my post yesterday and this will make sense,) or, if this is troublesome, a Happy December 25th... or how about simply a "Nice Day"? - Granted, when someone tells me to "Have a Nice Day", I usually respond by asking, Great! Where can I get one? or No, I'm sorry... I've made other plans. - but hey, I'm a cynic.

If it's number three above... well, I know I just wasted a FEW minutes for you... and hope it was at least SOMEWHAT entertaining... but allow me to possibly point you in some directions to "kill time" I suggested last year at this time... Oh heck, let me link to the old post... it DID have some reasonable suggestions to kill time if you're looking 'round the 'net today... CLICK HERE for my suggestions...

So, again, to everyone who fit's into categories #1, #3, and #4 above... Sue and I and everyone wishes you the Merriest of Christmases... and for the folks who are in category 2, I hope the day finds you happy, healthy, and well.

Oh, and if you're wondering, no, there was no bus under the tree at the time of writing this... I guess it was a bit big for Santa to lug about...
:)

Honestly, all the best of the day to one and all...

Yes, the above is a picture of our Christmas Tree...

Only the United States Military could make this so complicated...

Click "Play" Above...

Don't forget, NORAD tracks Santa...

...and despite opposition and general concerns about security, the Department of Homeland Security have promised they will not send out a military "Seek and Destroy" team should Santa fly over U.S. Territory... they will only do this if he tries to land anywhere without giving applicable tariffs and taxes to U.S. Customs on his "gifts" and allowing them to be searched for possible weapons, contraband goods, and of course, explosives. Also, as Santa is not an America citizen, he will have to go through a rigorous check via the USCIS in accordance with IMMACT and IIRIRA to ensure that America is safe from an illegal immigrant working within their borders... as anything other than household staff for a politician.

In suit, the Canadian government has also raised it's security status for this possible "invasion"... and will place one extra RCMP officer outside 24 Sussex Drive this evening.

Oh, and our Prime Minister has already put out his Christmas message...

Now, TO BE POLITICALLY INCORRECT, allow me to wish each and everyone who comes by today a very Merry Christmas and a joyous and prosperous New Year.

Now, in reality, this is NOT really all that politically incorrect as I'm actually a devout Agnostic.

...but allow me to quote my oft quoted bit about this from a previous blog post (this will be the reader's digest version)...

I am somewhat of a politically correct guy... I try to consider all people's thoughts, beliefs, and traditions and not supersede my own in any way.

I do believe that all people, regardless of sex, spirituality, gender preference, race, or what have you should only be judged, if necessary, on their character and contributions to society as a whole... and I respect and enjoy other cultures and philosophies that aren't necessarily my own and try to learn from them and take what is good... and learn what I feel is bad (and why) and continue to educate myself.

That said, 'round the end of December, I will be wishing friends, co-workers, and anyone a "Merry Christmas".

This, oddly enough, for me is not a case of jamming my religion down anyone's throat... far from it.

I was actually raised in an "agnostic" household... one that actually never preached to me about religion or religious beliefs... and I was allowed and actually somewhat encouraged to learn about as many faiths and spiritualities as I could... and decide what, if any, were best for me.

That said, as a kid, we did have a Christmas tree and did exchange gifts and had a large dinner with friends and family on that day... actually, it was not unusual to celebrate from December 24th through the 26th with the big "Family Feast" being more on Boxing Day here in Canada.

Sadly to some, for us the "Christ" in Christmas was more part of the word than anything else... we were aware and told of the religious significance of the time and the celebration of the birth of Christ, but we were mostly told that, if anything, it was a time to celebrate family and being together... a "fete" of simply being one with everyone else.

This was "Christmas" to me... and still is.

I liken it very much to Halloween. Although there was some significance in All Hallow's Eve, not to "satanism", but to ancient Pagan rituals, but for most folks Halloween is simply a time to "dress up", hear spooky stories, and go trick-or-treating for candy... the origins are there, but so thoroughly mixed in with the modern trappings that for most, it's simply a time to have fun... with no dogmatic issues attached... and the vast majority of people in and around where I live understand this... and kids and adults "celebrate" simply being able to be a little silly... nothing else.

As another thought in the same vein, I still call the months July and August... but don't venerate ancient Roman emperors as Gods during those months...

So, when I say "Merry Christmas!" to someone, I'm NOT thinking, "Merry time of the birth of Jesus Christ upon this world and I hope you're celebrating this day for this lest you be a heathen-scum!" mostly because, to many devote Christians, my whole bit above about the "Christ" in Christmas simply being part of the word makes me a "heathen scum" to them!

Nope, when I say "Merry Christmas!", I'm thinking of a time honoured tradition of gift giving, family gatherings, trappings of an ancient (and not-so-ancient) type that bring the joy of the season... even if you're possibly "sampling" and that season isn't for you and your faith.

My "Merry Christmas!" makes me think of old paintings of children playing in the snow... opening presents... a family eating a big meal... decorating a home... lights... songs...

Sure, some of that does have a religious connection... but what's wrong with the FEELING of what I described?

The warm glow of giving... the warmth of being surrounded by family... the feeling that on one lousy day, there's a sense of peace and togetherness...

Do the origins of this bother you?

I'm an agnostic... and it doesn't bother me a bit.

In fact, I'd be honoured to be wished a happy Ramadan... and I have been wished a Happy Chanukah and felt the spirit in which it was said...

...and yes, I do accept and occasionally wish people a Happy Hogomanay and Happy Saturnalia...

...and even more oddly to some, with the above said, I wouldn't be and am not at all insulted by these "alternative" greetings to my own faith and belief... again, I'm honoured to be included and that I was thought of.

Just because there's a "spiritual" or religious background to something doesn't make it "bad" or "wrong" or even "ethno-centric" to enjoy it...

It will be Christmas...

...and I'll be wishing you, and everyone, MY version of Christmas... and hoping yours will be a merry one when the time comes.

Sure, Happy Holidays covers it all, but please, when the time comes, accept my wish of a Merry Christmas... as I'm wishing you the joys that I experienced during this time... and I'm not trying to force anything on you except my most heartfelt glad tidings.

I hope this makes sense to most people reading this...

...and doesn't offend anyone...

December 25th, according to my Calendar is called "Christmas"... and much as an atheist friend of mine retorted once, Well, there's fifty-two days as a rule called Monday on your calendar. Would you wish me a Happy Monday? and, I'm sure no one's shocked, I said, YES! I would!

...I'd wish him a Happy Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday... Yup, I'd wish him "Happy" all those days.

I don't like Wednesdays so piffle on that.

So again, MERRY CHRISTMAS ONE AND ALL... and hope that this day finds you all well, happy, and enjoying the season.

Yes, the above is a picture of our Christmas Tree...

Her enthusiasm, and energy really shines through in this video, and certainly brightened up my early morning Christmas Eve. :D Go ahead and give the video a watch and you too will soon be singing along at your PC and tapping your feet. You really cannot help it, plus it is a lot of fun!

Blog Your Blessings Sundays: Why didn't I think of this before?

TIME IS RUNNING SHORT FOR ONE OLD RED BUS! Sure, we're still holding a family Christmas wish for our own One Old Green Bus, but we're very concerned over the fate of Barton Transport #512. It's not far from Chicago and $2,200.00 and some love will save it from being scrapped. Please consider saving this wonderful bus. Click here for details...

Blog yer Blessings

I have been somewhat agonizing over my "Blog Your Blessing" today... mostly because I know 90% of the people that BYB will do a "Christmas" blessing of some sort which is fine and understandable... but I like to TRY and be a little different.

I suppose I could say that my blessing is being unique... but that would seem almost like this is an entire joke, which it isn't.

Then Sue said to me, Why don't you go through the year's blessings in the archives and pick one as the year's best? which, to be honest, I was going to do next week... but it did spur a rather simple thought... something SO simple, I'm shocked I haven't done this before...

I got to thinking... I have done 43 weeks of "Blog Your Blessings"... never missed a week... and out of the "memes" I've done, it's usually the one that I have (oddly enough) the least amount of trouble blogging about.

Yup, I've had a LOT of blessings....

A lot of blessings...

I'm a pretty blessed guy!

Bingo!

Y'know, I have a loving wife, a happy and healthy kid, wonderful pets, a roof over my head, a warm meal, I've managed to quit smoking, I've got a new job which is SLOWLY helping us regain our footing...

...and, even though we have not succeeded (yet?) we have our dream still... it hasn't gone away... and everyone has a sense of excitement about it too... Sharon said our dream was an anticipated adventure and that, in itself, is a blessing.

My health has improved in general... as has Sue's...

...and our "debtload" that we ended up with after the employment dry-spell is going down every week.

...then there's all the wonderful friends we've made from blogging...

Like I said, many blessings...

My blessing today is ALL my blessings!

Sounds like a cop-out in a way, but it isn't... I seriously thought about it and overall, Sue and myself... our whole family... have MUCH to be thankful for... and we are.

Well, except the kid... who's miserable as she fears she WON'T be getting what she wants for Christmas... what's funny is, and I can write it here 'cuz she doesn't read this... she IS getting the gift she was most hoping for... but I'll let her brood in her tweenage way a little bit longer... say to the morning of the 25th.
:)

For those of you who won't be popping by One Old Green Bus between Monday and Wednesday, please accept Sue's and my wishes of the MERRIEST of CHRISTMASES and the BEST of the SEASON!

Oh, and if anyone is wondering why I am wishing a "Merry Christmas" instead of the more generic "Happy Holidays"... considering the my religion is "Devout Agnostic"... Click here to read my views on this greeting. Forgive me for not being terribly "traditional" and "religious" about the festive times... but hey, points for honesty!

So again, MERRY CHRISTMAS to all and see you next Sunday!

Ho! Ho! Ho! I am in the spirit! - TEN GIFTLY THINGS

Quick Note: I'm taking Saturday off from blogging for wrapping and other assorted Christmas type stuff... I will return with my "Blessing" on Sunday though... and will reply to comments and whatnot... just no big post for Saturday.

Before Starting This Post: There's Now Only Two! One bus has sold on eBay... but we need help for one of the others or VERY shortly or it will be scrapped... and we're still hoping for our own One Old Green Bus. Click here and read about the buses... and if you can help in ANY way, please consider it... Thanks...

Via The Hot Dog Truck with thanks to The Wall Street Journal...

I love the above "cartoon" for a number of reasons... not the least of which is that in Canada, anyone who charges for any sort of "psychical" business (no matter what it is,) MUST make it expressly clear that they are For Entertainment Purposes Only. Granted, I believe this is proper and right, but I still find that and the above funny. I know it's "stand alone" funny... but my own mind adds a bit to it with the psychical stuff. :)

Anyway, although many people did this for their Thursday Thirteen list, mine this week was a rant (scroll down to see it,) so I did not list my perfect dream Christmas gifts...

So, allow me to do this now... My Dream Christmas Gifts... plus what I honestly think my chances of seeing them on December 25th...

Gift Number One: Our One Old Green Bus
Estimated Chances of Seeing it on December 25th: 1%

Although I'll keep trying, I don't think this is The Christmas of the Bus... We will keep going, but honestly, I figure we have about a 1% chance of getting good news about our bus. It's a dream... it may come true... but reality says only "maybe".

Gift Number Two: Barton Transport #512
Estimated Chances of Seeing it on December 25th: 2%

This is the bus we're hoping to save... but it doesn't have to be "ours"... it could be anyone who saves her from the scrappers... I believe that after the end of the month, it will be a fait accompli that it will be scrapped... Hopefully, someone with $2,200.00 will save her... and YEAH, of course we'd LOVE her as a personal project... which is why she's so high on my list. Click here for details on this bus... Another long shot... and getting her would allow me to kinda prove to the kids that kooky dreams CAN come true... but like I said, it WOULD be a gift to hear she's been saved from the scrapyard.

Gift Number Three: Trip for Two To England - Min. 15 days...
Estimated Chances of Seeing it on December 25th: 1%

To say Sue and I are chomping at the bit to visit is a ridiculous understatement. I do believe the chances of this trip in the next couple of years is 100%... but for Christmas, it's not as likely. (...and yes, I know I said "England" and then used an image of Tower Bridge which is a London icon... but we would do a little bit of everyplace and London, as tourists, would be a likely "launchpad"!)

Gift Number Four: A bigger home.
Estimated Chances of Seeing it on December 25th: 0%

Well, credit for honesty! Chances of us moving to a bigger home within the next three years, 100%.

Gift Number Five: One Baker Rifle (with Bayonet)
Estimated Chances of Seeing it on December 25th: 1%

The musket I used to use for re-enacting... and had to sell in a "fire sale" to make up rent. I will get another... and never let it go. I miss being in the field... and I miss looking after it as it was a black-powder antique replica. *Sigh*.

Out of all the things I had to give up during the hard times, this was the most difficult.

Gift Number Six: Some Goodly Books!
Estimated Chances of Seeing it on December 25th: 80%

"The things I want to know are in books; my best friend is the man who'll get me a book I ain't read." - Abraham Lincoln

Titles aren't all that important... as long as I enjoy them!

Gift Number Seven: A (or some) Comfy Sweater(s)
Estimated Chances of Seeing it on December 25th: 10%

DON'T LAUGH! (...and don't think ill of Sue...) The reason I won't get them is because I admit I'm VERY fussy... so although it's unlikely I got any sweaters under the tree, I'm certain I will have some after the boxing day sales. :)

Gift Number Eight: A (or some) Time Off from Work (Guilt Free)
Estimated Chances of Seeing it on December 25th: 0%

Sadly, I have a better chance of inhaling a Chevy Malibu through a straw then I do of having my office say, Go on! Take a week or two off! We'll be fine and don't need you! This is a good thing as I'm very secure in my position... but I'm awfully tired as the only time I've had off was when I was "unwell". :(

Gift Number Nine: A peaceful and relaxing evening
Estimated Chances of Seeing it on December 25th: 25%

The puppies and whanot will probably thwart that to a degree, but I know we'll try...

The Most Important Two Gifts...

Gift Number Ten "A": A hug from my steplings...
Estimated Chances of Seeing it on December 25th: 0%

Sadly, they'll all be with their dad... so I miss out... but there's always the next time they visit to retrieve their gifts... so don't feel TOO bad for me over this... my hugs WILL come... just later... and no doubt, Sue and I will have a loving and romantic Christmas. :)

Gift Number Ten "B": Hugs, Kisses, Loving, and Warmth from My Sue
Estimated Chances of Seeing it on December 25th: 100%

...and that, my friends, is why no matter what, it will be a GREAT Christmas!

Well, there's the dream Christmas list... and provided "Ten A" and "Ten B" come true, like I said, it will be a GREAT Christmas at Chez Didier/Darroch!

For the records, R.D. Reynolds is a freakin' genius at comedic writing style. (Although his "spoken word" stuff... via his podcast... not so much to be honest. Yeah, I'm a fan... but...) ANYWAY...

The poor man probably doesn't know I've abused his stuff for a past Thursday Thirteen... and here it is, Christmas Time, and I've got to send his MAGNIFICENT website, WrestleCrap.Com even more linky love...

NOT for the mat sports and grapplin' this time... but for his CHRISTMAS HOLIDAY CRAPPY CLASSICS!

Click here for the main page... but BE WARNED... R.D. tends to leave things up only for a BRIEF time...

Let me save you some time and say simply...

Click Here and click here and click here...

...but MOST IMPORTANTLY, PLEASE CLICK HERE and prepare to laugh hard.

His "treatment" of the "Star Wars Christmas Special" is a thing of beauty and a joy for... well... the season.

George Lucas, FOR SHAME! :)

Kinda makes the one scene from Weird Al's "White and Nerdy" mean so much more...

Thursday Thirteen (Edition Quarter - That's Twenty Five...) - Abominations, baby!

Thanks...

Gonna keep the above-line chatter at a minimum as my TT is a bit of a read this week... and a bit of a rant too!

Thirteen Personal Abominations

PLEASE REMEMBER: These are PERSONAL rants... you may not agree with them, and that's cool... but if you wish to dispute anything, please dispute the facts and data, not the personalities.

#13: Decaffeinated Coffee

Why? WHY!?! I mean, too many times, I, a caffeine fan, have been offered coffee... which I prefer to be NATURAL! Removing the caffeine takes away a large part of why I even DRINK coffee! I know, some people attribute caffeine in coffee to their migraines... some attribute the caffeine to exasperating other health issues... then my suggestion would be DON'T DRINK COFFEE! Spare the rest of us the occasional mistakes! I understand that this SEEMS selfish... but as an example, I really, Really, REALLY love shellfish... and it really, Really, REALLY hates me... so I don't eat it. I'm not going to demand "Allergy Free Shellfish" be developed so I can partake... I'll simply acknowledge my limitations!

#12: "Light" Cigarettes

What did people expect smoking these??? Cancer light??? Lighting something on fire and sucking the smoke into your lungs, not matter WHAT the something is, is bad for you. Period. As a former smoker, I understood this back when I did smoke... I understand it now... but there they are, like the HEALTHY alternative. IT AIN'T!

#11: People who think mixed martial arts are still no-holds barred fighting and are super-dangerous blood sports.

Okay, NEWSFLASH... MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) like UFC and the former Pride DO have rules and referees... and there ARE illegal moves... and they really are there to showcase martial arts. It comes from people saying Gee. If a Karate black-belt fought a Brazilian Jujitsu fighter... and a Judo guy took on a wrestler... who would win? So, they combined the styles, MADE RULES and Voila! MMA! Sure, it's a "cage fight" and that IS part of the marketing... but to date, in North America, there has been ONE fatality in the sport... in almost twenty years, ONE... this means college, semi-pro, and even pro football is more "deadly". To be totally honest, boxing is often more violent and far more aggressive then MMA... as MMA does allow wins by submission. You put your opponent in a hold that hurts too much, they tap, victory... unlike boxing. This said, and backed up with evidence, there will be AT LEAST several newspaper articles and whatnot decrying that horrible no-holds-barred fighting... with the author not bothering to research the story. Abominable!

#10: Paris, Lindsay, Nicole, Brittney, Et Al...

ARRGH!!! Does the media NEED to fixate on these girls??? Does anyone REALLY care save themselves and Chris Crocker??? Y'know, if Paris, Lindsay, Nicole, and Brittney suddenly fell off the planet, life would go on... for literally ALL of us... and oddly enough, only a few gossip columnists and "hangers on" would be in any strife. It's amazing how many worthy news items get "bumped" to small spaces in favour of crud from one of these girls or their ilk.

#9: CBC's "Greatest Canadian" Travesty.

POP QUIZ - FOR NON-CANADIANS! If you're nation held a poll to find their "Greatest Person", would a celebrity who RENOUNCED their citizenship who is known more for a sex tape and having big fake boobs make the list??? Well, a person matching that description made the TOP FIFTY here in Canada! Yup, Pamela Anderson Lee Mrs. Kid Rock Ex-Whatever the latest guy was... she made the list... and yes, she RENOUNCED her Canadian citizenship about a year BEFORE they started the poll. What's interesting is that she made the top fifty... Wayne Gretzky made the top fifty... oddly enough, only ONE of these people were in the top fifty... two in total in the top 100... Click here to read this abomination... In my opinion, this popularity contest further proved how my fellow countrymen remain ignorant of their own land.

#8: Removing the concept of "Christmas" so as not to be "exclusionary".

A school in Ontario is re-writing carols and Christmas songs for their concert to only be about "The Festive Season" and "Happy Holidays"... because they don't wish to "exclude" those who don't celebrate Christmas. Last year, a judge had a Christmas tree removed from a court house because it might "offend" people that don't celebrate that holiday. The really hilarious thing is MOST of the groups they're most worried about voiced in that they had NO PROBLEMS with the celebration of Christmas... in fact, one Jewish group and the largest Muslim group in the city came out and said they thought the "banning" of Christmas and it's ornaments was dumb and that they enjoyed celebrations of ALL types. It never fails either... the LOUDEST proclaimers of losing traditions based on how they might be viewed by "minorities" tend to be of EUROPEAN JUDEO/CHRISTIAN STOCK! Get over your guilt... and Merry Christmas to you, you abominations!

#7: The Somewhat Extreme Left

I can't say the "Extreme Left" mostly because once someone is ALL the way left, they are either communists or socialists... and usually end up as more of a dictatorship or worse... Anyway, the ones I mean are those that purport to be "socially conscious" and take the idea of political correctness to new heights. The people that have swallowed EVERY worst case scenario and end up taking things to such extremes without realising that "reality" don't work that way... Things like "Disband all armies!"... then who would defend us? "Ban all police violence!"... yup, the criminals would love that! For them, society is to blame for EVERYTHING... which is ludicrous. What's even more annoying is the people that tend to be of this type are usually so insulated from what's really happening, they can't comprehend that many of their "solutions" are worse than what's ailing folks... and that you can't "ban" or "stop" everyone from some things without considering alternatives to what they see as the problem. granted, they're NOTHING compared to the next folks...

#6: The Extreme Right

I'm still trying to figure out when being "Right Wing" or "Conservative" became being a paranoid, isolationist, racist... but it seems to have happened. "If we change things, our society will crumble!" The Hell it will... "It's them foreigners! They're to blame!" Well, being a North American, we're ALL foreigners unless you're an aboriginal... and even then, who made it over the Bering Strait first? Was anyone here before they came? Cloaking racist paranoia as a "political view" and then adding a secular slant to further "justify" intolerant behaviour is really beyond the pale... I find that the "Extreme Right-Wing" are worse than the "Extreme Left-Wing" anymore for slamming down rights and liberties based on fear... and don't get me started on saying valid scientific facts and data CANNOT be because their faith and philosophy say it ain't... Argh! Hey, speaking of that one...

#5: People that ignore "Inconvenient Facts" because they don't jive with their faith and/or philosophies.

Been here, done this... if interested, please read...

#4: People The Slam Our Endeavours With The Bus(es)

I get about two to four e-mails EVERY week to tell me that we're beggars, scammers, crooks, and a list of assorted other things some of which include some strange references to my lineage and my relationship with my mother. Why trolls need to "attack", I'll never understand... but if you READ over the last YEAR AND CHANGE worth of posts, you gotta wonder how ANYONE would think this is a scam or that we're only in it "for the money"... because if this is true, MAN we're failing monumentally... Trolls = Abominations!

#3: The Age of Entitlement

Remember when people STROVE to be the best? Remember that you worked hard or harder to win a game or to get your team to a final? NOT ANYMORE! Nope, EVERYONE gets a prize now! But hey, this isn't ONLY about school and kids stuff... if you're a blogger OR have a web site, you might know what I mean... the AMAZING amount of people that feel they can tell YOU what style of type to use, what colours are "best", and the never ending attacks from the spelling and grammar police! A lot of people assume that WE (all of us) exist to entertain and amuse THEM... and we better get it right! They are abominable!

#2: The Dumbing Down of EVERYONE

I mentioned Paris, Lindsay, Brittney, and all... and how they "bump" real news stories from the papers and whatnot... but lets face it... why are the "Extreme Right" and the "Somewhat Extreme Left" so ignorant? Heck, why are MOST people ignorant??? Because the most important thing to them is that their favourite TV show is on and not preempted and that there's a frosty-cold beverage in their fridge to partake in while they watch said program. The VAST majority of people can tell you the name of Ross' pet monkey from the first episode of Friends... but can't name their local school trustee. There are some who feel that this is a conspiracy to keep the masses stupid... I do not. I believe it's the inbred laziness of the masses to not attempt to be informed about as much as they can. For them, ignorance is bliss... and learning is a chore. It's all rather depressing... and a true abomination.

#1: De-Alcoholised Beer.

...for people that enjoy the bitter taste and frequent urination without the intoxicating effect of alcohol. (...and I'm a teetotaller!)

Happy Happy Joy Joy! Zero Emmision Routemaster!

Thanks...

From The BBC...

Designs which could see the iconic Routemaster bus being returned to regular service have been unveiled.

Plans for an emission-free Routemaster, using a driver and conductor, were outlined by Autocar magazine.

The buses would carry 76 passengers and there would be a ramp for pushchair and wheelchair access.

But London Buses said the design failed to address the issues of safety and accessibility which led to the demise of the fleet.

The majority of the original fleet of Routemaster buses were withdrawn in 2005.

Bus designer Capoco was asked to come up with a design for a new Routemaster by Autocar.

In the plans, electric motors would drive the bus and be powered by battery packs which, in turn, are charged by a hydrogen-fuelled engine and generator.

The bus would carry 48 people on the upper deck and 28 on the lower and be built from lightweight materials.

MP for Henley Boris Johnson, who is the Conservative candidate for London mayor, backed the plan which he said was the "shape of the future".

But Mike Weston, from London Buses, said conductors would have to be re-introduced at a cost of £600m per year and that the costs of a new design would be onerous.

He said London Buses would "continue to progress by using the most efficient, clean and safe technology available, not harking back to a bygone era".

Autocar editor Chas Hallett said: "We approached Capoco to create a new-generation Routemaster bus to our brief.

"Resurrecting the bus conductor would improve security for the public and for the driver."

Routemasters still operate on two tourist routes in London taking passengers past some of the city's top attractions.

That last part about the old Routemasters sadly is only "Until..." if some folks have their way... Click here to see more about that.

Apparently, Mr. Weston shares Mr. Edwards' view of Routemasters... which is sad... but the fact that someone's TRYING to think of ideas to get London's iconic buses back on the streets is heartening... and perhaps narrow-minded folks like Mr. Weston won't be "in charge" too long to kill these kind of ideas.

...and then there were two... but both are VERY important...

This still leaves us with the TWO old double-deckers... Barton Transport #512 which has less than a WEEK before the current owner said it will need to be sent to the scrap yard... so we hope that someone might find $2,200.00 to either own it themselves or donate it to a worthy family who's been SUBTLY hinting... to be honest, EITHER will do, just help us prevent this wonderful vehicle from becoming a scrapper! Click here for details...

...and of course, Our Own One Old Green Bus - RLH 3 which holds a special place in our hearts...

Now, I have received SEVERAL semi-complaints about too much "busly-begging" on the blog, so this post is really just an update on the one bus now sold... and to make it up to those who like to come here and read postings of all different sorts, I'm going to TRY and deviate a little on my Wordless Wednesday tomorrow... so bear with me.

____________________________________________

In other news... we did survive the big snow... and Sue gave me ONE gift early... a cute little MP3/MP4 Video Player Faux Pod or iFraud... and yesterday, when even public transit was horrendously delayed and stalled in bits, what a WONDERFUL toy!

If you're a public transit commuter and DON'T have a nice combo music/video player, GET ONE! I watched an episode of "Time Team" en route to the office and while everyone on the subway/bus was grumbling and generally miserable, I was cocooned watching my wee screen as the guys went to work digging up a little part of England!

So, need to get something for the person that has everything BUT is stuck on trains or buses... consider these as a fantastic gift option!

It's too bad I believe that "He Who Shall Not Be Named" drives to his place of employment as I'm sure he would get a real kick out of these gizmos...

Granted, would YOU want to sit next to "He Who Shall Not Be Named" if he was "enjoying" the movie from the image above???

For those not in the know, the reason we masked "He Who Shall Not Be Named" is because every time we've linked publicly to him, our hits usually take a 10% beating... meaning upwards of 150 people stop reading... Ergo: We don't share the TRUE identity of "He Who Shall Not Be Named" on this blog...

SNOW DAY! - Scenes from yesterday...

Before Starting This Post: You may have noticed we've reverted back to the original looking blog... This is NOT because we've had any success... it's because the complaints were a bit thick... so we have changed back. We are STILL begging for help though... and there's THREE buses involved... please click here and read about the three buses... and if you can help in ANY way, please consider it... Thanks...

Toronto and most of Southern Ontario had a wee few sprinkles yesterday... and Saturday night too...

I did say we (Sue and I) weren't going out but... we did. Just a walk not far from the palatial compound that is home to finish Christmas shopping and grab some groceries... again, not a long trip...

Oh, let's face it... we WANTED to experience the snowstorm a little... and this way, if it REALLY sucked, we could be home pronto!

So, with the snowy weather in mind, I'm taking a SNOW DAY here on the blog and giving my muse a long weekend... I'll post something a little more substantial tomorrow... promise!

Blog Your Blessings Sundays: Gimme Shelter...

Thanks...

Blog yer Blessings

Oh, the weather outside if frightful... but at least we're looking like stereotypical Canada right now...

The view outside the living room window this morning at the palatial Didier/Darroch compound...

For the last five years, it's usually been a "green" Christmas with days in December being warm enough to go without a winter coat...

...not this year, apparently.

It started snowing last night... and although not a "deep" snow (we supposed to get a maximum of 14" or 36 centimetres...) the wind is whipping it up and causing white-outs... for those not familiar with true wintery-weather goodness, that's like a desert sandstorm... save it's snow.

It's a brisk 12 degrees Fahrenheit or -5 degrees centigrade outside... and the winds are NorEasters... gusting at 33km/h (or 20 mp/h...) Not a big wind, but enough to cause a lot of dry, icey snow about.

It is not a day to be outside... in fact, the television and radio news are telling everyone to stay in because of road conditions.

Yesterday, Sue and I did the lion's share of ALL our Christmas shopping... and then I went out after, when Sue told me "not to pick up too much" and bought about four days worth of groceries... good call.

Another view outside the living room window this morning at the palatial Didier/Darroch compound...

Believe it or not, we're NOT completely staying in... a decision was made this morning to go to a store that is almost literally around the corner to pick up two last gifts... and we are out of salt...

...but days like this remind me of days like this (click here)... and my heart goes out to people who, for whatever reason, do not have a roof over their head... and I'm glad that in Toronto, there's patrols out to literally grab homeless folks and take them to shelters...

Still, there are those who will slip through the cracks... and my prayer is that they will find a way to be safe and sound on days like this.

...and although I do feel a trifle guilty about it, My Blessing Today is Shelter from the Storm.

It will be a nice day to cuddle up with the blogs, some games, a book or two, a documentary, the puppies... all with Sue today...

I hope, wherever you are, you're safe and warm... and that the season is treating you well...

Hang in there for the blessing...

Sorry folks, we've got a small winter storm happening... and it's playing havoc with electrical service and internet...

...so, not wishing to push my luck, I'm going to put up my BYB Sunday post later in the morning... when things SHOULD be in some semblance of order 'round here.

For now, I invite you to read my "rant" yesterday... and check out the comments... because the "commenter/TV Producer" is a VERY strange duck indeed...

REALLY uncomfortable stuff.

ECTOPLASM TONIGHT! - Da-da-da-da-da-daaa...

I sincerely hope that Sue considers copying this post to the Paranormal Blog... It's a reasonable "Sunday Smackdown" of a sort...

I know I promised something more "lighthearted" for today... but instead, this is a demi-rant that some of you will be pleased to hear has NOTHING to do with buses in any way, shape, or form... unless we use the bus in our studies at some point...

Not too long ago, a woman popped up on the PSICAN message board and announced, with much glee, that she was a "TV Producer"...

She posted a poll...

Hello there
I am in the research and development stage of a proposed tv show.
I have joined this, and many other lists so that I may get to know members and learn "through your voices" the current state of what the paranormal is.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

*POLL* - Is the nation ready for an "Entertainment Tonight" style show about the unknown?

[ ] There is not enough evidence to support supernatural "news"

[ ] There is a need to mass profile mediums, investigators, journalists, scientists, and clergy.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

I will drop by now and then, to read posts and archives, and occasionally ask questions. It is a pleasure to meet you all.

Karyn Klaire

The missives and messages after all pretty much echoed what I'm about to reproduce... it is and admitted "Copy/Paste" from the message board as my final response to this... but if you have a look, pretty much everyone said the same thing... I'm just wordier and built in my personal feelings...

More often than not, it occurs to me that my (effective) life's work... all ten-thousand-plus pages of it... are little more than pixels... and that it is all written on ice and a thaw could come at any moment.

Electronic media is always at the capriciousness of many factors... ranging from finances to simple magnetism... at any moment, ten plus years of study, learning, reading, interviewing, visiting... could go *poof*.

Top this off with a serious question that was posed to me by an old workmate... Is this how you wish to be remembered? Is this what you wish to devote your life to? To be mocked as a loon? To be looking into something most normal people think is make-believe?

Curiously negative... but true statements.

Most people do mock and make fun of what I study... and when people say to me that they're friends or whatever are not like that and how awful the people around me must be, I remind them that I'm not talking about my friends and family... I'm talking about the average person who woke up this morning, commuted to their workplace, did a days work, went home, had supper, and watched whichever television program is their favourite.

For centuries, those people, and they make up the lion's share of the population, have been told that "smart" people... people that aren't "fools"... poop on the concept of ghosts and spirits... that it is the domain of Hollywood and weirdos who wear gypsy-like outfits calling themselves "Madame Something-or-Another".

Meanwhile, Sue and myself have lectured at universities... been given acclaim from scientific and historical resources and publications... we even have gotten serious respect and help from everyone from psychics to Canada's national "sceptics" society... heck, we've had both the past and present chairs of Skeptics(sic) Canada at our apartment for coffee...

...and yet, time and time again, we are overshadowed by the worst common denominator of what the internet whelps up as "Ghost Hunters"...

...worst part is, it's not because we're boring.

...or not "telegenic".

It's because we won't sell soap on the backs of those who take this study and the phenomena seriously. We won't add to the "giggle factor" with the masses. We won't allow people to make witnesses feel like they are no better than folks who are best served in a padded cell.

Our experience is that, in one way or another, that is what pretty much EVERY media person/company has done... either out of the gate or eventually with a show or concept.

The other effect this has is that although the more "music video/scary-boo" shows do great at lining the pockets of those people that produce or "star" in the programs... the attention hurts us when we do things like try to convince a university that "paranormal studies" are a worthy course... or a historic site that we will treat their site, their heritage, and their history with respect...

Neither of these often believe us because... well... they've seen "us" on TV. (Read: They've seen other people on TV... but in their eyes, we're all the same.)

In Toronto, there has only been ONE "elective" course on legitimate paranormal studies sanctioned by a non-profit, accredited university... it was taught by one of the worst auto-debunkers and a member of both Skeptics(sic) Canada and (at one time) a fellow of CSICOP (now CSI)... and it was called "Pseudo Science"... and the course was built to show how it's all bunk. From reports we got from those who attended (it's no longer offered,) is that basically the course in it's entirety could have been summed up by having the professor involved give a lecture this brief...

They're all imaging it... it's not real. Don't bother.

This kind of thinking with true academia is understandable with the dirth of shows on the paranormal that don't bother addressing one simple fact... that even the real "sceptics" don't argue with...

Weird things are perceived by people that defy explanation.

Simple fact... swept under the rug so that media can sell the sizzle and no steak... 'cuz they THINK that the steak is boring... or because they have drank the organized non-believer's Kool-Aid of how only idiots and the mentally challenged believe in this nonsense... evidence and data to the contrary... but the best and brightest won't come forward all the way... because of "bad press".

I wrote an open letter to the media years back... it's been reproduced many times by many different groups... and it's precursor is true...

We have been asked to hoax by the media.
We have been asked to "scare" witnesses by the media.

...and yes, I have been asked to "Dance to the Ghostbusters theme" by the media.

A decades hard work... a library of hundreds of books and papers... literally thousands of hours of intensive labour...

...so I could act like a buffoon for the cameras.

The sad and honest truth is that there is some truly wonderful, interesting, and borderline breakthrough things out there... and some are being studied and documented properly...

...the majority are being looked at by the folks who would have gladly danced to the Ghostbusters theme... the same folks who's reading, if there is any - which as a rule, there isn't, is usually limited to things produced in the last fifteen years and in tabloid format... and have not even bothered to really think about what or why they are doing things for.

Until someone says, "Hey! I think people would be interested in a program that takes an intellectual look at the possibilities of the paranormal... and it's far-reaching consequences... and there's some not-too-whacky people that, although not colourful, could perhaps shed light on everything from folklore to spirituality... from history to the concept of life after death... Maybe they should have a voice!" and avoids those who simply want their fifteen minutes of fame... or to sell their latest wares, we remain a touch cynical.

We often talk about Fame vs. Success.

Sue and I often put it down to this...

Would you rather have your name immortalized in People Magazine... or on a library?

We'll take the library.

...although many see People... and Maury... and Montel... and yes, even Entertainment Tonight as the pinnacle.

I'm sure your request has gotten, here, the same reaction as the producers of Dexter would have gotten had they gone into a fourth-year University class on Abnormal Psychology and pitched the concept there.

They would see it as an affront... they would recognize the media as the main source of disinformation about their study... and they would shriek with horror about the entire concept.

...and yet, I like Dexter.

...but it's fiction... and supposed to be such.

We're not.

I hope this sums it up for you... I have no doubt that you will have "takers" and there is a chance of a season or two of success...

We're hoping, despite the capriciousness of electronic media, for a lifetime of success with what we do.

This sounds like a shot... it isn't... for every Handel, Chopin, and Mozart, there needs to be a Vanilla Ice, Deee-lite, and Toni Basil for the masses...

Sure, they won't be around long... but they make a lot of money for those "in the know" in the short term.

The masses need entertainment... but those people (who do make up the lion's share of those who report to be investigating the paranormal) who do it because "it's fun" don't understand that for us, it's like a person who's spent their lives training and working towards being a great distance runner being tripped, by accident, by a bored stockbroker at a marathon... and because the stockbroker dressed in a Santa suit to run the race, our years of effort don't even blip on anyone's radar...

...except in this case, we're looking into possibly things like survival of bodily death... historical and scientific looks at folklore...

...they are looking at being able to call their "best friend forever" on the telephone and scream "LOOK! I'M ON TV!!!"

It goes to reason, for most, that not everyone who picks up a shovel and sifts through dirt is an archaeologist... you need to know what you're looking for... and an episode of Maury will not teach you that.

I can't stress this enough... we here are considered "elitists"... "not friendly"... because, yeah, we're actually trying to work at this and no, none of us suffer fools gladly.

Perhaps, although many would beg to differ, this makes us bad candidates for fifteen minutes of fame.

We want success... We believe there is something more to the things we do than a fifteen-second video-bite... We will achieve AND HAVE achieved things that would make a lot of people excited... on both sides of the "believer's" fence...

...but we still won't dance to the Ghostbusters theme... and we're still not awed at the concept of being able to call our BFF and tell them we've been in the media.

We still have fun... we still laugh and smile... but sorry, we can't "scream on cue" and don't intend to... and cringe when we are forced to watch those who will.

I wish you'd added one thing to your poll... the option to pick, Please - Don't do this show.

A decade of work... summed up in fifteen second soundbites by those who won't read and can't see that there's some pretty far-ranging bits of our studies makes me just a tiny bit more nauseated.

Some days, when I think about how this study is going especially with media folks, I almost wish that big magnet would strike my work down... considering how I've seen it ripped off, misunderstood, and ill-quoted... and usually, turned into something to be laughed at for the masses to amuse themselves with.

Perhaps that's why I stood where I did... and perhaps, at least here, that's why many stand where they do.

We're not here STRICTLY for fun... because we know, there's a lot more to it... and many people need answers... not just a music video.

Please reference:

Y'know what... before I bail on this lengthy missive... PLEASE take some time to read this too...
http://seminars.torontoghosts.org/blog/index.php/2006/11/05/

Personally, I'd be happy to see the media even understand the word "sceptic" (or American spelling, skeptic)... and call out the non-believers who refer to themselves as such.

They won't... because, in their eyes it seems, it's not their job to educate the masses... only to entertain them without substance.

Like Entertainment Tonight, eh?

Wonder if it will be hosted by the "paranormal" equivalent of John Tesh and Mary Hart?

...if there is a "paranormal" equivalent of those two.

ONTARIANS! - First look at the new GO Buses...

First look at the GO double-decker bus...

This is the first of 12 expected Alexander Dennis Enviro 500 buses that will be running the roads in Ontario shortly. Mr. Bateson expects (with some reason,) that GO Transit (Government of Ontario Transit) will be getting a total of 22 buses... meaning they will be running many of GO's routes in and around Toronto by the end of next year... with the first going into service by March of 2008... or apparently sooner! :)

Hard Night...

Thanks...

See that bit above? Man, I tell ya... if I ever meant it more, I don't know when.

I know, I'm reusing this graphic (above) with good reason...

Over the last two days, I invoked a story about when the kiddollo mistook something Sue and I were talking about and thought we'd gotten a bus.

Well, Thursday night we were rolling through that story over dinner... and the kid looks up at me sadly and says, You're not getting the bus, are you?

I kinda recovered... Oh honey! We will get a bus... it's just not coming right now. I'm working on it!

She then said, Yeah, but it's been like years... I don't think we're gonna get it.

I just assured her we would at some point... that somehow, a bus would be in our future...

A little later on, she came over, gave me a big hug and said, I won't be sad if we don't get the bus... but I hope you and mom get one soon. and with that made her exit to go and listen to her Hanna Montana CDs in her room...

Sounds dramatic... don't it...

It was.

*Sigh*

ThinkThinkThink... gotta find a way...

Like I said, I'm scramblin'...

-----------------------------------------------------

If I do have any wealthy relatives or fans out there... I have to say it ONE MORE TIME...

This one is probably our best chance...

...followed by this one (scroll down to the 1948 PD-1)...

I think the "Green Bus", at $20k to start to contemplate the process of getting, may have to wait...

-----------------------------------------------------

Okay... Now I KNOW a few of you are FED RIGHT UP with the begging and whatnot... and I shall reign in again... but I needed to outwardly get this episode communicated... call it a purge of sorts to try and shake the cobwebs... kinda like this old post where I originally put the Simpsons' graphic up...

Tomorrow, instead of the usual "How The Week's Gone" post, I'll do something more entertaining and lighthearted... promise!

...just need a day to reconfigure the thoughts, come up with ideas... and try to find $6,250.00... or $2,200.00... just to prove a point... a VERY important point I think... to a tweenaged girl.

ThinkThinkThink...

Thursday Thirteen Vingt Quatre (Call Jack Bauer!) - Will, Won't, Might...

Thanks...

THURSDAY THIRTEEN!

In a desperate attempt to be original... and a little bit to kinda reign in the pleading of the last few days, I'm doing something kinda odd for my Thursday Thirteen...

Thirteen Things:
Some we will, some we won't, and some MIGHT be!

Basically, these are thirteen things about our quest for the bus...

Read along... you'll get the idea... and I hope you enjoy it.

#13: Will

Should we succeed and get the bus, it's a given we will be overjoyed. I'm betting I personally weep. If When we succeed, I'm sure Sue will get pictures of my weepy-face... and share 'em... dammit...

#12: Won't

We won't be using the bus as a level five containment laboratory for infectious diseases. Sue and I discussed it, and although some people think it would be a great idea, we don't think it's for us.

#11: Might

There's always a chance that we might find our bus is haunted... wouldn't that be a touch cliché! The ghost people have a haunted bus!

In making this statement, you watch... it'll be true and now NO ONE will believe us.

...like many of our friends, when it comes to our studies, believe us now...

#10: Will

To say that the bus will be appreciated by the entire family and our friends is an understatement! We have many people pulling for us... and I know the bus, whichever it may be, will be admired, fawned-over, and generally loved.

#9: Won't

Although it's been suggested, we won't be painting the bus to resemble a red-white-and-blue rocket and trying to jump the bus over the Snake River Canyon as an homage to the late Evel Knievel. Sue looked into the rocket boosters we would need and decided that they were environmentally unsound... not green enough... so we've kaibashed the idea.

#8: Might

We might entertain the notion of putting a bar on board like Ralph Weibel did with his Routemaster (and apparently, his antique Jag)... but that WOULD be for other people to enjoy as Sue and I are honestly teetotallers.

#7: Will

We will be doing our best to fix up our bus... and get it road worthy using our own resources (the begging stops when a bus is in hand!) and we will keep our promise of showing up to a War of 1812 re-enactment in our bus!

#6: Won't

We won't be adding a "spoiler", a five-million watt sound system of nothing by sub-woofers, a chain steering wheel, neon-lights under the body, or any of the other ridiculous things certain (usually young) people do to dress up a car. (I believe they call it "rice"...)

#5: Might

We might, depending on how repairs and such go and how she runs, try to take her for a LONG road trip... perhaps to visit blogging friends in the states... perhaps in Florida... perhaps one's that have THREATENED to do violence to others and run them over... repeatedly... until sculpey bleeds from their innards...

Yeah, we MIGHT do that... :)

#4: Will

If we succeed... we will get good pictures of our little one's face as she finds out.

A while back, she THOUGHT we had succeeded in getting a bus... and I wish ALL of you could have seen her face... it was magic... both Sue and I were agog at how she brightened.

...and it was a terrible shame to have to tell her she was mistaken.

Perhaps next time, we will be telling her good news.

#3: Won't

We won't be installing a disco ball, shag carpeting, or putting large paisley or "flower" designs in the bus. Nope. Won't happen! Sue's promised!

(...Honey? Why was you hand behind you back just then??? You DID promise, right????)

#2: Might

If we got "another" bus other than the real target, if the body was in bad condition or the like, we might paint it green to "honour" our original busly quest... but we're hoping to try and maintain the original bus appearance as much as possible...

#1: Will

In one way or another, we will succeed in our quest! Right now, to make our dream come true, we either need to find $6,250.00 to be REALLY good... in fact, it would pretty much make our lives complete!

...or $20,000.00 to be perfect.

PLEASE, click here and read about the three buses... one (or more) of which we're hoping MIGHT end up with us and why...

Thank you for reading!

Wordless Wednesday: Three Targets...

Just three pics today... but three VERY important pics... These are the THREE buses we're hoping someone will help us with...

Two we'd be thrilled to get PERSONALLY... one we're hoping ANYONE will buy to save it from being scrapped.

I hope you take a few seconds to read the BRIEF blurb I'm going to write under each one...

Regent Low Height 3
The Original One Old Green Bus - RLH 3. This is the bus we've been after since this blog started... it will take $20,000.00 to make this dream a reality. Click here for more details about THIS bus.

Barton Transport #512
This is NOT a "Regent Low Height"... but is in GRAVE danger of being scrapped. It's located very close to Chicago and will be scrapped in about a week or so if a new owner isn't found. We've said we'd LOVE to adopt her as a project, but we'd be happy if ANYONE bought her and spared her from the scrappers... $2,200.00 will buy her... for us, it would also require some extra for shipping as she isn't running... We hope someone will save her... or help us save her. Click here for the information on her... scroll down to the entry on the Leyland PD-1 from 1948 for details...

Someone e-mailed me recently and said, with the now THREE buses in our sites (granted, only two are really "personal", but work with me...) if we expected a "miracle"...

...I responded that it is Christmas time... and there's always hope.

...and we do have our dreams.

...and I've been good Santa, HONEST!

In Addenda: Lots of chatter via e-mail lately...

In answer to a GOOD question...

How long are you going to keep posting about these buses?

Excellent question.

Well, the blog IS about the "One Old Green Bus"... so for it, really, always. GRANTED, through the Christmas season, I have turned it up a notch... This is because we're hoping that things will happen for Christmas to give us a little hope...

As for the other two buses... their longevity is in question.

RLH 62 will most likely be sold through it's auction soon... and I had to try (see above) so when it's gone, it will cease being mentioned.

Barton Transport #512 will either be scrapped or sold before month's end... so when either happens, it will cease to be mentioned.

We are hoping for a Christmas "miracle", if you will... so please, for one more lousy week, indulge us. :)

Thanks folks...

Need Cash Fast?

When we were going through rough times we often relied on cash advances, which are also known as Payday loans. Not all of these loans are created equal though, so if you are planning on taking one out you might just want to click on the link I have added into this entry. The site provides a loan calculator, and will give different quotes so that you can choose to apply for the best one for your own financial circumstances. The website is easy to use, and can help you to get some cash fast.

Thank you to the sponsor.

Regent Low Height 62 on eBay...

SORRY, HAD TO EDIT AND DELETE SOME STUFF... MY APOLOGIES...

Gee whiz! It's e-mail day!!! (See below... this post... for the first bit of e-mail weirdness over the last few hours...)

Okay, another good question...

That said, RLH 3 (the old green bus) holds a special place with us...

...and Barton Transport #512 (the old red bus) would still be a project to ensure it doesn't get scrapped.

BUT SINCE THIS SEEMS TO BE two people's REAL intent to find out, allow me to answer some questions...

- = - = - = -

*IF* we got RLH 3 (One Old Green Bus) we'd still keep the blog going, remove the begs for help with is AND remove the "PayPal" icons and such. That would be mission accomplished. We would still, for the next couple of weeks, be trying to find a saviour for Barton Transport #512 (one old red bus) to keep her from the scrappers... and succeed or fail, after December, we'd stop begging for help with her AND this blog would be about our trials and tribulations with RLH 3...

- = - = - = -

*IF* we got ahold (personally) of Barton Transport #512 (One Old Red Bus) we would STILL be trying to get RLH 3. Basically, RLH 3 is a special bus to us... which is why it's so important on our radar. If you don't know why, click here... but we would be THRILLED to have Barton Transport #512 as a personal project.

- = - = - = -

In essence, for us right now to demonstrate to our kids that a DREAM can come true is the important thing... and they know our dream is an RLH bus... therefore, THAT is the important thing.

Ergo: To get an RLH bus is the mission. The ultimate goal is RLH 3. We'd be happy with any of 'em.

As for the non-RLH (Barton Transport #512), this quest has left us with a love for these buses... all of them... and knowing that she WILL be scrapped without saving is why she's mentioned. "We" don't care if it's us or ANYONE... we just want the bus to be safe from being turned into a 4 x 4 cube of semi-recyclable materials.

If we get her, GREAT! If someone else saves her, FANTASTIC!

...but yeah, RLH 3 is the main goal... and the "mission" is a Regent Low Height.

...and yes, if we achieve our main goal, we WILL stop begging.

If we achieve the mission, we will reign in the begging.

I hope this answers the question for folks.

Tune-Up Day Off... and answering a WEIRD question...

Before Starting This Post: PLEASE HELP! I'm begging... Click here if you don't know what I'm on about... I have about ONE WEEK or the "One Old Red Bus" will be scrapped.

Happy Tuesday, folks... Sorry for the "cryptic" title of the blog post, but here's the skinny...

Today and tonight, I'm working on the "guts" of the blog... trying a few things and streamlining the backups et al... it shouldn't interrupt your reading pleasure, but this is why I feel this post is TRULY a "Half Butt" posting...

---------------------------------------------------------------

That said, got a few e-mails yesterday of "Congratulations"... which were weird...

Allow me to answer some "rumours", I 'spose, that aren't based in reality to my knowledge...

#1: No, we have not gotten any word that we have succeeded in getting our "One Old GREEN Bus"... and, in fact, I'm 99% sure that there has been zero movement of the bus in Santa Rosa... I'd LOVE to say differently... or even entertain that there may be a "surprise" ready for us for Christmas, but a few communications have confirmed that we have NOT obtained our dream (yet?) and that the bus is, indeed, still in it's barn, still being filled with trash... and not making it's way to Toronto.

#2: No, we have not gotten any word that WE are getting the "One Old RED Bus"... in fact, it's far more likely someone else will be purchasing it... which is still GOOD news as we simply don't want it being scrapped... but even "someone else" buying it has NOT been confirmed... or even a "good rumour" that it's being saved by anyone yet.

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

Basically, both buses are still in jeopardy of being scrapped... The Red Bus is in more imminent danger, of course, but both buses are STILL in their original situations from last week. I've checked... and this is the case... sorry.

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

#3: Yes, there's a writer's strike in America by The Writer's Guild of America... and that MAY be good news for Canadian projects (is it?), but we have NOT been contacted about Sue and I doing any projects for the media... bus-wise and/or "ghostly" wise or combinations thereof.

Now, I know that these items (and the flurry of e-mail congratulations) stemmed from a Toronto blogger posting about these things... but sadly, there is NO TRUTH to them whatsoever... I'm keeping my day job, we don't have any plans nor have we spoken to anyone about any "paranormal television" programs, and the buses are still a priority and need saving and are not in our possession or even close (yet?)

The blogger responsible has responded to me via e-mail and deleted the "offending" post... and although they have not divulged their "source" for their information, I cannot stress enough that it is not true... at least, to the best of my knowledge.

The reason this is so important to me to clear this up despite only about a dozen people contacting me is that we STILL NEED HELP... the red bus WILL be scrapped without assistance... and we're still hoping to get our bus... and no one has offered in a big way to help (yet?) so DO NOT ASSUME that, if you read about our "Victory" or whatever, we have saved the buses... or that we are doing any media-related work on ghosties in the near future.

Thanks to those (eleven folks, to be honest,) that sent congratulations... but it's premature... I do hope you WILL be congratulating us in the near future with the buses...

...as for doing a television series, Sue's a stone-cold fox, certainly... but I got a great face for radio.

____________________________________________

Addendum: Since there's interest... the "scuttlebutt" was that due to the writer's strike, American media folks were coming North to buy "properties" to get them through a shortened "regular" schedule. This is PROBABLY true... but in the "list" the blogger compiled was a Reality Paranormal Series featuring Sue and I in "our bus" doing ghostly things...

Again, this is NOT happening... as we don't have a bus (yet) and no one has approached us... and even if they did, I like my day job a LOT... so it would be an unlikely thing to happen.

Three things I strongly disagree with... sorta...

Before Starting This Post: PLEASE HELP! I'm begging... Click here if you don't know what I'm on about... I have about ONE WEEK or the "One Old Red Bus" will be scrapped.

Allow me to share three things that I do not agree with... sorta.

Basically, it's stuff to consider about standing up and being heard...

______________________________________________

#1: Don't agitate!

I forgot where I found it... one of those Weird "X" websites that highlight little known touristy things in a particular area. The site talked about a "folk artist" who had a farm anyone could visit with loads of interesting and odd bits of sculpture made of effectively garbage.

On the side of one barn, he had nailed up nothing but the agitators from washing machines (laundry machines) and their respective parts... he referred to it as "The Wall of Agitators" or something like this...

The man, like me, obviously lived to deliver a punchline.

When someone asked "Why" there was a wall of agitators, he replied...

Without agitation, nothing comes clean.

Something to consider...

When asked by a young follower in 1895, shortly before his death, what the young man could do to further the cause of equal rights, Frederick Douglass replied "Agitate, agitate, agitate."

______________________________________________

#2: Don't stir the pot!

Most people have cooked SOMETHING... and if you have cooked, have you cooked anything in a pot?

..if so, what happens when you STOP stirring?

Stuff burns, sticks to the bottom... and generally the meal is ruined and the pot impossible to clean.

...so, is it REALLY so bad to stir the pot?

______________________________________________

#3: Question Authority!

Don't question authority.

No, this does NOT mean that suddenly, like certain political lemmings, in order to "save face" for a side of the spectrum I'm suggesting that you blindly agree and nod along with bad decisions and poor information from a ruling oligarchy... not at all.

My variation?

Don't question authority, question EVERYONE that would assume authority!

You see, too many times people in the civilized world will rail against some sort of bad leadership or even philosophical stance only to bring in change that is, in essence, exactly the same as that which they had issues with.

I often equate it to living in a house made of rotten timbers... and thinking a new coat of paint will make it better.

Also, you need to question authority too... because not all persons in a leadership position are bad or evil... but they may have 70% reasonable ideas and 30% crapola swimming about in their noodle... and it may behove you NOT to (again) nod along like a toy dog with a spring head in the back of an old Buick riding along a dirt road... but to bring up your ideas and concerns.

Questioning anyone does NOT mean being against them... it means possibly strengthening their stance by giving them alternative feedback.

So don't JUST question authority, question everyone and anyone.

Dating Russian Women

I think that a lot of people are too judgemental when it comes to Russian women dating men from the west. We were pretty sceptical of it ourselves until a co-worker of mine started dating a woman from Belarus. That was ten years ago, and they have since gotten married, and are very genuinely happy. :D

Lovers Planet - Russian Women is a website that offers western men a chance to meet women from Russia, and other Eastern European countries. The site is set up to be user friendly, and easy to navigate. You can check it out if you are interested by clicking on the link I have added into this entry. I should also add that posting a personal ad through the site is absolutely free. Good lucks!

Thank you to the sponsor.

Paddington Bear goes to Gitmo...

Before Starting This Post: PLEASE HELP! I'm begging... Click here if you don't know what I'm on about... I have about ONE WEEK or the "One Old Red Bus" will be scrapped.

PLEASE NOTE: If you're looking for my "Blog Your Blessing Sunday", scroll down... it's below this post.

From the BBC...

Paddington, the bear from Peru, will be arrested and interrogated over his immigration status in a book marking his 50th birthday.

Paddington Here and Now, due to be published in June 2008, is set around the bear's home at 32 Windsor Gardens, Notting Hill, west London.

It will mark the 50th anniversary of his debut in A Bear Called Paddington.

Author Michael Bond, 83, who lives in London, said while the world had changed Paddington remained the same.

This will be the first book about the marmalade-loving bear to be published since Paddington Takes the Test came out in 1979.

Mr Bond, who lives near Paddington in central London, said, "Although the world has changed considerably over the past 30 years, he remains exactly the same - eternally optimistic and ever open to what life has to offer.

"It makes writing the stories a pleasure."

In the new book the bear, who arrived in the country as a stowaway, is interviewed about his right to stay in England.

He has no papers to prove his identity as his Aunt Lucy arranged for him to hide on a ship's lifeboat from Peru when she went to live in the Home for Retired Bears in Lima.

Mr Bond was working as a BBC cameraman when a bear he bought in Selfridges for his wife on Christmas Eve inspired him to write the original novel.

In that book, the bear is adopted by the Brown family when they spot him amid a pile of mailbags at Paddington station.

Say... this new story seems AWFULLY FAMILIAR...

Anyway, I don't know about you folks, but I do see some cynical comedy coming out of this...

When it's realised that Paddington is an illegal immigrant and most likely an illegal animal that was brought in without precautions and quarantine, he is turned over to American agents who quickly realise that he is possibly a South American guerrilla funded by Al Queda interests...

After extensive questioning, (read: "waterboarding",) it is determined that Paddington is a threat to the security of the Western world and that the word "Marmalade" is code that means, I'll kill you all, infidels! Jihad! Jihad!

Neil Patrick Harris comes to rescue him.

Kind of a modern folk tale, eh?

Blog Your Blessings Sundays: Appreciation...

Before Starting This Post: PLEASE HELP! I'm begging... Click here if you don't know what I'm on about... I have about ONE WEEK or the "One Old Red Bus" will be scrapped.

Blog yer Blessings

My mother played piano... often.

She still does.

I know, many mothers (and fathers) do as well, but this set up a mixed blessing of sorts for a while... which I now consider a big blessing.

My mother was classically trained by instructors at The Royal Conservatory of Music and as such, often played classical music... although her tastes were VERY broad...

Still, it wasn't unusual as a kid to be lulled to sleep in my bed with the sounds of Bach, Brahms, Mozart, Handel, or Chopin drifting in from the family room, up the stairs, and into my room ever so faintly.

The reason this was a mixed blessing is that thanks to this early appreciation of classical, I ended up with an early loathing of "pop" music!

Yup, the guy that went on to being a pre-Goth Goth really LOATHED any music churned out as "pop" or "rock"... and don't get me started about "disco"!

Nope, my first few Walkmans played Bach... and the Brandenburg Concertos kept my pace!

(You can all say it now... "GEEK!")

Well, as I became a teen, the alure of "pop" and "rock" and then "alternative" took me... but classical never left. It was soothing... calming... I could literally feel the synapses of my brain firing better listening to it...

I still do... and I always ensure something like "Handel's Water Music" is on my MP3 player (my "FauxPod" or "iFraud") just in case of jangled nerves...

Recently, everyone got gooey over Paul Potts on Britain's Got Talent because although many people have heard at some point some classical stylings... the appreciation of it, as a rule, is not there mostly because it's something FORCED on people when they're young in an attempt to "develop" a taste for the classics in them...

...but in context of separating the drudgery of other things, it spurs... it finds something in the heart... something that being forced to as a kid just cannot find...

My blessing today is my appreciation for classical music.

More than "art", it's my mantra... my centring point. It's home to me... emotions, feelings, and genuine love.

It's memories... and it genuinely sooths my soul.

Busly Saturdays - C'mon, blogsphere! Help save a bus!!!

I'm considering mild bribery... heck, I'm considering ANYTHING... We have about a week to go before the "One Old Red Bus" is off to the scrappers... and yet, things have kinda ground to a halt.

Let me make something kinda clear here...

We don't care WHO saves the bus... We don't need to own it... We are just hoping someone will other than a scrapyard!

For us to adopt it as a happy project (that we'd LOVE to have) would require $5,000.00

If anyone is willing to travel to Illinois, they will sell the bus for $2,200.00

Basically, if they DON'T sell, they lose their storage space and the bus will be scrapped.

So, like I said, if someone wants to give "us" (the whacky family with the bus issue) a $5,000.00 Christmas present, we'd be thrilled!

BUT...

We'd be EQUALLY as thrilled if ANYONE buys the bus for themselves or whatever... to save it from the wreckers.

Bloggers! Please HELP us get the word about THIS old RED bus out there! C'mon... everyone says they're looking for blog fodder... the pictures are cute... and EVERYONE seems to know the "double decker bus blog"... DO A POST ABOUT THE OLD RED BUS!

Time is honestly running out for the old girl...

Please, click here and read through my "Wordless Wednesday" featuring the old bus...

Hate us but you ARE interested in saving the old red bus from her fate? Click here and scroll down to the ad for the 1948 Leyland PD-1 and deal with it's owner directly!

JUST PLEASE, HELP US SAVE HER!!!

The more new readers... maybe even old readers who might return... we get to see this old bus, the better the chances of NOT seeing her scrapped!

For those who visit here and HATE the pleading and begging... and I know you're out there... like I said, I've got about ONE WEEK to either find $5,000.00 or find a buyer... or admit that we failed and the bus get's scrapped.

So, don't fret... we SHOULD return to the standard "One Old Green Bus" blog shortly... one way, or another.

On a "happier" note(?), I did like what Sue suggested on the Friends of One Old Green Bus Facebook group...

Shouldn't this be friends of One Old Green Bus, and its Red Sidekick or something like that???

...One Old Green Bus' Red Sidekick...

I like it! :)

To a select few... and you know who you are...

...if I may paraphrase and quote...

I haven't seen the movie nor will I. I haven't read the book nor will I. I know what the author's beliefs are and therefore intend to kick up such a ruckus that the publicity will be incredible.

...even though I don't honestly have the foggiest about if the ruckus is deserved or not.

Religious and spiritual beliefs are one thing... but when small groups from a religion or faith start dictating "thoughts" or telling you what's bad based on their own "quick glance", you REALLY need to examine your philosophies.

For example, The United States of America, through the government, has systematically ensured that stem cell research has been non-funded... this is because, as the powers that be's reverends and whatnot told them, "Stem Cells Come From Aborted Babies".

...this despite evidence to the contrary... not to mention the recent developments that might had come quicker had the powers that be removed their heads from their rear-ends.

Nope, these folks decided that they MUST stick to their Sun revolving around their flat-Earth facts and NOT grab towards science and learning because they were incapable of looking at the inconvenient facts. Even when people they were supposed to respect suggested they think outside their own myopia, they didn't 'cuz THEY KNOW BETTER!

...and in doing so have probably set back the tools needed to cure and treat thousands of ailments by decades...

Now, in today's world, there is a book.

The book is a WILDLY acclaimed children's book that has been enjoyed by millions... and they've made it into a film.

...then the author was found out to be an atheist. In fact, he DID say that his themes are "anti-religious"...

Well, then this book AND the movie MUST BE BURNED! After all, even AFTER reading the books (not done) and seeing the movie (not done) everyone knows that parents SHOULD NOT be expected to talk with their kids about philosophy and faith. That's not their job, after all, right?

It reminds me all a little too much of the hoo-haw over "The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe" when atheist groups, not nearly as vocal as the other folks, screamed that it was feeding children the story of Christ in metaphor...

Until someone walked me through, step-by-step, showing me this, I wasn't sure...

...and the fact that someone HAD to walk me through, step-by-step to show me PROVES that if it was some sort of overt-yet-subtle "pro-Christianity" story, it was a colossal failure as such.

I am still a devout agnostic... and have read "The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe" AND saw the movie.

Oddly enough, from what I'm to understand, despite millions of people reading this new book and seeing the new movie that stems from the writings of an atheist, millions of people HAVE NOT suddenly dove out of the Christian churches and become card-carrying atheists.

Amazing, but true.

Still, that segment of "Not Reading It/Not Seeing It" population know more about this book then the rest of us, right?

Well, the small segments of spiritual beliefs have always known who was bad for us and said hateful and dumb things... I mean, they protected us from such dangerous folks as Galileo, the teaching of Copernicus, and had they not stepped in and did what they did to Bruno, gosh knows what might have happened to mankind!

LOOK, I'm not a Christian... or Muslim... or Jew... or Pagan... or atheist.

I'm an agnostic.

I have NOTHING against ANY church aside from those that DO preach hatred... be it veiled as something else or overt...

...but I do have troubles with people who feel the need to, without evidence or experience on a personal or at least "neutral-sourced" basis, who crap on things because... well, because someone told them to.

It shows an utter lack of character, a complete disinterest in learning, and proves them to be little more than truly the "flock" they feel they are... although I doubt a "deity" is really their shepard in these cases.

I believe that men, working with less than half-a-clue, wanting to SEEM like they care more about "X" than anyone else DECRIES something because of a wee possible taint... and like a herd of wildebeests, the others in the flock simply run in the same direction assuming it to be correct...

...like the evils of stem-cell research.

Folks, you want to be AGAINST something SO BAD... and in DEFENCE of something AS BAD... ensure you get your REAL facts first. That's all I'm asking... and make sure those facts are NOT from a skewed source.

...and if you "fear" that your children will be wormed-away from their faith and their culture by something like this... now you know how the old-school Muslim's feel in certain parts of the world when their kids initially want to eat at MacDonald's and listen to rock music.

My argument with them is my argument with you... WHY NOT SIMPLY TEACH YOUR KIDS?

...because, believe it or not, they probably WILL meet atheists, agnostics, and other spiritualities when they enter the real world... and how dumb will it be that "YOU" sheltered them to the point of ignorance when that moment happens.

Just a thought...

Either that or, I suppose, this book and movie ARE dangerous... after all, we've all heard that before about certain books that children read.

Your Lesson for Today: Thinking for yourself and finding out things is, apparently, still bad.

It's been a while since I've seen a good book-burning for the "good" of the people to keep us away from strife...

Germany - 1933... Books written by Jewish authors are burned to protect "the faith".

"So, it wasn't a good idea to try and fix my hard drive with 10W40?"

Okay, THESE were funny... and I had to share 'em... but before I do, PLEASE click here and if you're a fellow blogger, PLEASE consider doing a post... ANYTHING to get more people to read about Barton Transport #512 (or "One Old Red Bus"...) We pretty much have ONE week to save her from the scrappers... and I'm hoping that if the right person or people read about it, we can save her from being ripped apart and eventually turned into a 4 x 4 cube of semi-recyclable materials.

Anyway, I read these and got a good giggle... it's a list of "Data Disaster Nightmares" from Australia Computer World from Ontrack's data recovery team...

One woman called to complain that she had "washed all her data away." Her USB stick had been through a cycle in her washing machine and -- surprise! -- she couldn't retrieve any data from it.

A British scientist was fed up with the way his hard drive was squeaking, so he drilled a hole through the casing and poured oil into the mechanics. The squeaking stopped, and so did the hard drive.

A wedding photographer faced the potential wrath of a new bride when he discovered he had overwritten her photos with ones from another event, the photos were recovered before the couple learned of the mistake.

In an effort to test a parachute, a camera (acting as the chute's cargo) was dropped from a plane. Unfortunately, the parachute failed its test and its fragile cargo shattered into several pieces. Ontrack's engineers had to reassemble the camera's memory stick and the video of the parachute's demise was recovered.

But the best recovery of all has to be the ant invasion.

Discovering ants had taken up residence in his external hard drive, a photographer in Thailand took the cover off his computer and sprayed the interior with insect repellent.

The ants didn't make it, and neither did the drive.

Brilliant.

Anyway, I had to share these... and PLEASE, again, if you can, help us publicise the plight of "One Old RED Bus"... like I said, we have about one week to save the old bus...

Too tired this Friday... so here's some Sharpe...

Sorry folks, but I is BEAT! I've had a LONG week and I'm dog tired...

...not to mention the steam really went out of the roll we seemed to be on trying to save Barton Transport #512... there's still time, there's still hope... and if you're unfamiliar with what I'm talking about, PLEASE click here... we need EVERYONE'S help on this one.

Anyway, like I said, Je Suis Beat... so, allow me to share a video I found on YouTube... A few people commented on my Thursday Thirteen that they didn't know my #1 on the list... Richard Sharpe...

Well, here's a video that's a WEE introduction...

Hmm... Wonder why this would appeal to someone like me?

Anyway, if you've NEVER seen the series, it's a bit like a "penny dreadful", but a LOT of fun! Give it a chance... you'll probably like it... if you like history mixed with swash and buckle...

Thursday Thirteen #23 - Kept Me Captivated!

THURSDAY THIRTEEN!

Welcome to the 23rd edition of One Old Green Bus' THURSDAY THIRTEEN... well, until the end of December, this is NOT strictly "One Old Green Bus" but includes "One Old RED Bus"! I promised I wouldn't go into the "why" of that today... save to say that IF you're interested, please scroll down to my Wordless Wednesday post below... PLEASE have a look at it if you have time and PLEASE help us save the bus from the scrappers...

That plea done, my Thursday Thirteen this week is...

Thirteen Fictional Male Characters that Intrigue Me or Kept My Interest...

Here's the first thirteen that popped into my mind...

#13 "Uncle" Matthew Cuthbert

From Anne of Green Gables and my true namesake. Yup, whereas many people are named for saints or family members, I was named after my mother's favourite fictional character. Elderly, shy, and a touch eccentric, he manages to see the "good" in the main character and finds life and a kindred spirit with Anne.

#12 Bond... James Bond.

Who didn't want to be James Bond at some point? Dashing, mysterious, adventurous, and a ready wit... all the time belying a killer who would just get the job done. Before ANYONE starts the arguments, yes, Sean Connery is the "film" bond... but having read the books, I always felt that Roger Moore seemed to be more like the "book bond"... but I'm sure some will argue. Hey, Roger Moore DID manage to turn an old Regent Double-Decker into a single-deck in "Live and Let Die" so he has to get my vote!

#11 Special Agent Frank Lundy

A newer character on the American television program Dexter. I like Lundy (admirably played by Keith Carradine,) as he comes off as a cool, controlled, "Zen-like" law-enforcement guy with an absolute understanding of work and non-working life. A kind-of "I'm Only Here For The Beer" feeling mixed with a HUGE dollop of, "But I'm The Boss And I Know More Than You Do" said with a friendly side. There's something eminently likable about this character and he's a great addition to the cast.

#10 Simon Templar

As a kid, there was something about Simon Templar, "The Saint", that made me want to model my life after him... granted, that could also be more "Roger Moore" love leaking out at a very young age. I admit to never having read any of the books, but being a fan of the television program. There's something about a smarmy and a touch "glib" criminal/hero that just made me want to start doing really bad things for good reasons and leaving "calling cards" about afterwards.

#9 "The Smoking Man" / "Cancer Man"

Creepy with a capital "Creep". For me, he was the BEST character in a show that everyone ASSUMED (incorrectly) that I was an enormous fan of... to be honest, it was a good show... then it became a soap opera... and fell off a cliff. Yup, even "The Smoking Man" jumped the shark really in the land of "The X-Files"... but I always got a kick out of his cool demeanor and the feeling there was EVER so much more going on that he knew about... even more than his own colleagues suspected. An object of fear wrapped up in a package of simply a persona of a little "slimey-ness". (...and he's Canadian too!)

#8 King Arthur (Arthur Pendragon)

I seriously have never believed that there really was a King Arthur... and if there HAD been one, he sure as heck wouldn't have been in the right time period to be dressed in shining armour and all that. That said, there was something about the telling and re-telling of the myth and story that OF COURSE attracted me... especially everything after Sir Thomas Malory's take on things. Yup, I am a total mark for the idea of old fashioned chivilary and all that... and it's a damned fine story... but it IS FICTION PEOPLE! (...even if someone wrote a series of books saying they were the "re-incarnate" of Gwenhyver... or Guinivere... or Guennivere... or any of the other million variations of the spelling.)

#7 Snoopy

GOTCHA! Seriously, what's not to like about Snoopy? From his various incarnations as things like a doctor, writer, and other such stuff... not to mention "Joe Cool"... to my favourite, The World War One Flying Ace... who's Sopwith Camel looked very much like his dog house. Snoopy is, in many ways, the embodiment of all that is imagination and fun.

#6 John Steed

Okay, perhaps this also was an early crush on Diana Rigg... but again, John Steed (admirably played by Patrick MacNee) was someone who always entertained me... well, that and the rather "interesting" writing style of the television program The Avengers. Steed was the right combination of comedy and action... and more than a little "stiff upper lip".

#5 Captain James T. Kirk

Oh how I hated my mother for CONSISTENTLY referring to James Tiberious "Man-Of-Action" Kirk as "Captain Cutey". He was a STARSHIP CAPATIAN, DAMNIT! I hope William Shatner knows that like MILLIONS of kids of my era, he set up a want to be a starship captain... I wonder if this is true of the next fellow...

#4 Captain Jean-Luc Picard

Yeah, Jean-Luc comes ahead of "Captain Cutey" (THANKS MOM)... Picard SEEMED unflappable... and also exhibited the "right stuff" as the captain and leader of any vessel of a quasi-military variety. A combination of "Take Action!" and "Diplomacy". Intelligence metted out with gut instinct. If only my father, who was "follically challenged" (a bullet I've managed to dodge) watched Patrick Stewart become a bit of a sex-symbol AND a "man of action", I'm sure he would have approved most heartilly.

#3 Lennie Briscoe

Another side-bomb for some in this list I'm sure. I became a BIG fan of the series Law and Order back when A&E seemed to be running it CONSTANTLY... and the one detective played by the late Jerry Orbach was a very great character... kind of an old fashioned Film Noir hard-boiled detective melding perfectly into a modern setting... with all the imperfections and grittiness that entails. Law and Order also intrigued me a lot as we didn't REALLY get to know any of the old characters... the show was always plot-driven and rarely strayed into the lives of the main characters with only slight references here and there. Ergo: We knew SOME of Lennie Briscoe's life... but not all of it... and no superfluous nonsense... which allowed us to kinda tag-on what we expected of him to be him. On the show, he kind of represented something we knew was a "Last Of..." kind of thing... the dying breed of the television hard-nosed, dues paid in full, but cool cynical cop. His character could never be replaced.

#2 Dexter Morgan

Another "newbie"... I blogged about this a LONG time ago... the concept of a sociopath as the main character... someone we SHOULDN'T like... but are kind of forced to... and do... and... well, it's complicated. Still, Dexter Morgan is the right combination of emotionless serial-killer and psychopathic/sociopathic persona that SHOULD be everyone's nightmare... and the logical side of your brain is SCREAMING that you shouldn't be rooting for this man and he SHOULD stop doing what he's doing... but you don't want him to... and you certainly don't want him to get caught. The second season WAS being a bit of a disappointment as Dexter started emoting... no good... sociopaths should NOT emote... but it's regaining me in these latter episodes. I find it a little difficult... but I like my wooden terrifying monster to remain a wooden terrifying monster... and that's what keeps me glued to the show. I can't imagine ANYONE pulling off Dexter like Michael C. Hall does...

#1 Richard Sharpe

The man who saved Wellington's life from French calvary... the man who took the Eagle at Talavera... The underdog... and hate me now, but I have read a few of the books, but much prefer the television version of "Dick" Sharpe... a lowly sergeant in Wellington's Invincibles who, though heroism, is raised from the ranks to become an officer... and therefore, an outcast. (Remember, officers back then tended to "purchase" their commissions... being raised from the ranks meant that "rabble" had jumped into the realm of the "gentlemen".) Sharpe faces adversity from ALL angles and always wins thanks to daring do. A perfect meld of "Underdog-Makes-Good" with "Swash-and-Buckle"... and as I've often said, I need to have my swash buckled regularly. In the novels, Sharpe is not exactly "pictured" as the fellow who plays him on TV... Sean Bean... and his sidekick/buddy/friend in the book starts off younger than him, Sergeant Patrick Harper... played on TV by Daragh O'Malley... who, on TV, comes across more as the "wisend vetran" and partner to Sharpe... and Sharpe in the novels is from the South of England... whereas Bean has a decidedly "North Country" accent... To be completely honest, I think Bean as Sharpe is the greatest thing on the planet... if only he would have fought in Upper Canada in The War of 1812, he'd be perfect! Hmmm... perhaps he kinda did...

Not included... but could have been... Hans Gruber, Marvin, Marvin, Sherlock... even Cthulhu... To be truthful, this list could go on and on... but I had to pick thirteen, and for better or worse, the one's above jumped into my cranium first.

Helping Hand Thursday - Lapband Procedure

This "Helping Hand Thursday" edition is an information packed website for people who are looking to learn more about the LapBand procedure, and other weight loss options that are available to people. I found that the Journey Lite website was easy to use, and gave out good info on this topic. They are also user interactive with message boards that people can discuss weight loss through. Have a look at the site by clicking on the link above. :D

Wordless Wednesdays - The One Old Red Bus...

I recently promised NOT to hit people over the head with this one... but indulge me for Wordless Wednesday... because we get a TONNE of visitors today and for our Thursday Thirteen...

I beg you, if you don't know the story behind the addition of ONE OLD RED BUS to our blog, please read below... I've done my best to keep it short.

________________________________________________

During Part of December 2007 Only... We have added to our "quest", so to speak... Below are images of a 1948 Leyland PD-1 double-decker... that will end up in a scrap yard in a couple of weeks without some action. The current owner is asking $2,200.00 for the bus because he is effectively losing his storage space... if he does NOT sell it, he will be forced to scrap the vehicle.

We here at "One Old Green Bus" are therefore hoping to accomplish one of two things...

#1: Find the $5,000.00 we would need to purchase and ship the bus to us to adopt as a project. We would STILL be hoping to get our One Old Green Bus, but this would be a GREAT "Christmas Gift" and would soften the blow if we are not successful in our attempts to get our bus... especially with the kids... and at 1/4 of the cost of our green bus, MIGHT be "do-able". We'd STILL try for the green bus, but this would be another project we'd LOVE to take on... and it's better than seeing it scrapped.

#2: Find an alternative buyer... Although we'd LOVE to have this bus, as long as it does not end up scrapped, we'd be VERY grateful for anyone who'd save this old vehicle!

Details on the sale are available at this website (click here) and scroll down to the bit about the 1948 Leyland PD-1 bus...

I can't say this strongly enough... Although we'd love to have this bus... and $5,000.00 should be a lot easier to "find" than $20,000.00... we welcome ANYONE who might want to purchase this bus for themselves and find it a good home outside a wrecking yard.

I've honestly never felt like I've "begged" before... but to save this bus, I'm begging... if you can't help... if you can't save it for yourself... PLEASE blog about this! Help get some traffic over this way and perhaps someone will read about this and help out...

Thanks... and here's the images...

I promise my Thursday Thirteen will NOT be about this new bus... and I'm hoping you will all help me get the word out before the end of the month...

Thanks in advance...

This could either be really funny... or an utter train wreck... there will be no in between,

Quick Forwarding Notes for December's Posts... Yes, this is STILL the One Old Green Bus blog... but if you read the first bit on the sidebar (below the "About This Blog" section,) you'll see there's a special cause going on for One Old RED Bus... Please take a second to have a look...

I admit to being a forty-year old... This means I tend not to dash out to see movies that look a touch juvenile...

...that said...

I still have never seen Harold and Kumar go to White Castle despite what can only be described as surprisingly good reviews from trusted reviewers.

To be honest, I've put "Harold and Kumar" on my list of movies I won't switch off if they pop-on my TV at some odd moment when I need entertaining.

Well, I may undo a deed... and probably see a "sequel" before going to see the original...

How on EARTH can you miss with the film title...

HAROLD AND KUMAR ESCAPE FROM GUANTANAMO BAY!

I kid you not. Click here...

Bad taste? Perhaps... Funny? Maybe...

...and hate me all you want, but the mere title makes me giggle... and Neil Patrick Harris!!!

NEIL PATRICK HARRIS!!!!

Yup, the original Doogie Howser MD is in this film being... well, judging by the teaser below, more than a little... sinister?

Now, I know... I should be more considerate... more understanding... way above finding this sort of thing amusing... especially considering the horrors of the real situation and the obvious spoofing of stereotypes...

BUT WHAT CAN I TELL YOU???

I'm a bit of a low-brow at heart and yes, this concept amuses me.

Oh, c'mon now... I was pretty honest about my feelings when it came to Hard Gay!

I shall now atone for my sins of low-brow comedy by reading a lovely tome by Proust while listening to a mixed CD of Chopin and Thelonious Monk...

...and I will even suppress my giggles over the thought of what they could do with this movie...

...of course, unless, true to Hollywood, they bollocks it up somehow.

Like the title of this post says, this will either be a BRILLIANT comedy and satire... or a complete and utter train-wreck that, oddly enough, WON'T be worth looking at...

I'm really hoping for the former.

Hmmm... What is going on... Could this end up being "One Old Green Bus"/"One Old Red Bus"?

It certainly seems that, indeed, we may need to rename the blog here... If I may sling Merriam-Webster for a second...

optimism: \ˈäp-tə-ˌmi-zəm\ noun an inclination to put the most favourable construction upon actions and events or to anticipate the best possible outcome.

For the last three days, we've been kinda crowing about another bus... Now, I don't want to bore REGULAR readers (or even those who don't get enough fibre in their diet,) so here's that story in a SMALL nutshell... (if you know the score, just skip the text between the dashed lines.)

-------------------------------------------

Barton Transport 512... a 1948 Leyland PD-1 double-decker bus... is being offered for sale for $2,200.00 and it's in Illinois... much closer than Santa Rosa which is where the Old Green Bus currently is... One fellow and friend of this blog told me that shipping the bus to Toronto would take about $2,500.00... so $2,700.00 to own this bus FOR US.

That said, I brought it to people's attentions because we'd be thrilled to see ANYONE own this bus... because the current owner is losing his storage spot and it's either sell or scrap... and we would hate to see it scrapped.

For details about the bus, click here and scroll down until you see the ad for the 1948 Leyland PD-1.

POINTS:

- No, this is not "our bus", but like I've said, we'd be thrilled to take it on as a project... but we'd keep thumping our drum here for RLH 3, "our bus"... but Barton Transport 512 would be loved and used... and to be honest, would soften the blow with the kids and whatnot SHOULD we fail with "our bus".

- No, we still don't have enough to buy this bus ourselves... and to be honest, we COULD save enough... but we wouldn't see the right amount until probably August... and the current owner is being FORCED to sell within the next couple of weeks.

- Yes, we ARE serious when we see we hope ANYONE might buy this bus and save it from the wreckers... it deserves a better fate... and if anyone DOES buy this bus, please let us know.

-------------------------------------------

Okay, so there it is... and I can now continue with today's post...

As I said yesterday, we've received a TONNE of support and genuine hope that WE get this bus! In fact, it's been kinda weird the overwhelming and unexpected amount of support we've gotten...

Sadly, no one is in a position to help monetarily, but everyone is throwing so much moral support that, to be frank, if there IS anything to "The Secret" and the concept that tossing something mentally out into the universe makes it happen, then I should prepare to change this blog to...

One Old Green Bus - One Old Red Bus

...because it seems that far more people than I would have suspected are pulling for this one HARD!

I just wanted to say, at the get-go and POSSIBLY on the eve of a little success...

THANK YOU!

Thanks to all of you who've written to say you're praying for us... sending best thoughts... sending positive energy... or just genuinely wishing us the best of luck on this one.

To be completely honesty, optimism is not a luxury I afforded myself too much in this quest since starting it well over a year ago... but with Barton Transport 512, I dunno... but there's part of me that feels VERY good that, indeed, it's coming...

...Fingers crossed...

As to not jinx things, I think I'll cease writing about it for now... (I don't want to bore everyone away from the blog here...)and perhaps spend the week on normal topics like teddy bear issues, the WGA (Writer's Guild of America) strike, silly Idols, and the like...

...but hey, if you can help get the word out...

...and not just about OUR intentions...

If you DO know ANYONE in Illinois or nearby that might want to save an old bus... let 'em know.

Blog Your Blessings Sundays: Everyone seems to be pulling for us...

Blog yer Blessings

Now, don't get me wrong... I know that the (literally) thousands of people that come by here each day are rooting for us... well, most of 'em are... but when I mentioned (on Friday and yesterday,) about the 1948 Leyland PD-1 that is Illinois and destined to be scrapped in a couple of weeks unless sold...

...and mentioned that "we" would be thrilled to take on this old bus as a project...

...there's no other word... The "Woodwork" opened up to expose MANY fans and friends... most of them telling us how we should... heck, most of them telling us how we NEED to go after this bus.

Something I don't share is how much my volume of e-mail (not comments, but actual e-mails sent either through the form on this blog or the mail link on the side-bar...) from this venture... to be honest, it's slight... usually five or six e-mails a day... usually one or two "flamers", trolls, or haters a week to tell us how much we "suck" or the like.

Anyway, on Friday... fourteen... Saturday, another "bakers" dozen (thirteen)...

...all the mails have been positive...

...and some from friends and family I didn't THINK were all that interested in our kookery!

All saying, "GET THAT BUS!" and/or words to that effect.

I have to admit... I was gobsmacked by SOME of the folks who are suddenly pulling for us... but there they were!

Sadly, we don't have the $3,809.00 ($2,200.00 to buy, $2,300.00 to ship... thanks to Dave for the info on the latter... minus $391.00 collected already...) I figure it would take to get this bus (above and beyond what we have,) and no one has offered to help us out in that department... so chances are, we won't be getting that bus...

...but what it DID prove is that indeed, many people... including some I wasn't expecting... are pulling for us and our kooky dream.

My blessing for today is the friendship and support of those you hold dear... that sometimes comes from where you least expect it!

Now, I gotta be honest about TWO things...

First of all, EVEN IF we got this old "red" bus in Illinois, we'd still be TRYING to get ahold of our One Old Green Bus here on the blog... granted, we'd be THRILLED about the new acquisition... and it WOULD take the sting out of any failure... especially with our kids... but RLH 3 (the One Old Green Bus) holds a special place for us... and we gotta try.

Second, we REALLY don't want to see this bus scrapped... and the fella who currently owns it is losing his "storage space" and MUST sell or scrap... so if you're in the Illinois area and interested OR you would be willing to save a wonderful old vehicle, it would make us AS HAPPY to know that the bus is safe from the scrappers...

PLEASE Click Here, scroll down to the 1948 Leyland PD-1... and consider buying "One Old RED Bus" (and let us know if you do! She deserves better than the scrap yard.)

World Aids Day - Dec. 1st

Okay, PLEASE go read today's "Busly Saturday" below... but I had to jump in and share this... which I found on Perez Hilton's blog...

It's a video of "American Idol" contestant, Kellie Pickler proving to the universe that NOT ONLY is she NOT "Smarter Than a Fifth Grader"... but chances are a bucket of slop could probably out-think her.

MENSA will not be calling on Ms. Pickler anytime soon.

...and people wonder why the world has such a low opinion of Americans... when this train-wreck ends up being an "Ambassador" for the people of the States and it's understanding of the nations of the world.

As Perez Hilton says, she makes Miss Teen South Carolina look like a freakin’ genius.

Yup.

We now return you to our normally scheduled bloggage...

Busly Saturdays - COUGH! COUGH! COUGH! (Ad Nauseum...)

World Aids Day - Dec. 1st
Please click the image above...

What a freakin' week! I spent MOST of this week coughing my breath away thanks to a BRUTAL chest cough... the doctor gave me an inhaler and some meds and SLOWLY but surely, I'm coming out of breathless haze.

That said, there were SOME things of note this week, aside from my phlegmy existence...

To get the usual over with...

No, there was no fiscal moves with the bus... (No new money has come in.)

No, as far as we know, the bus is STILL in Santa Rosa and is still in it's barn being used as a large garbage can which is still sad.

Okay, now that those two points are out of the way...

Well, to solidify my turning to the EVIL that is known as the "Book" of "Faces", I beseech thee all to consider joining my support group that, indeed, I built...

C'mon and support the whacky bus folks on FaceBook!

In other news, AS REPORTED YESTERDAY, there's ANOTHER bus.

Gosh, that SO sounds like There's another woman!, but as I said in my post yesterday, this does NOT mean we're switching gears from trying to acquire our one old green bus!

The Reader's Digest version of this other bus...

It's in Illinois (which admittedly is MUCH closer than California to us,) and it's owner MUST move it in a couple of weeks... no options... and he can no longer afford it...

That said, $2,200.00 is needed to purchase the bus...

...or it WILL be scrapped.

This isn't a threat, it's the sad reality of the situation. The fellow simply can't do it any longer...

Now, in my post yesterday, I pointed out that it would be a MAGNIFICENT Christmas gift to hear one of two things...

One is that ANYONE with a "good home" and some time bought it to spare it from the wreckers...

The other is, SURE, after talking with Sue, we'd be HAPPY to take this on as a project and try to work with this bus... if someone was so inclined as to get "us" a Christmas gift! :)

Sadly, at $2,200.00 combined with an estimate of about $2,000.00 for shipping and the lot... it's STILL too much for us. Things have improved for us, and perhaps in August I could have the dough... but right now...

Right, now that you're filled in...

Sue and a FEW other people, after seeing the picture, have let us know that THEY feel this bus WILL BE OURS...

Weird... but that's the scuttle-butt.

Considering the condition of the bus (which isn't TERRIBLE... but not good either...click here and scroll down a bit to the 1948 Leyland PD-1 to see more pics...) this one would not be a pure "conservation job"... but a retro-fit...

...but the blog would go on... and we would NOT give up on RLH 3 which is special to us on a few levels...

...but we'd love to tackle this bus anyway and Christmas is here! (Hint-hint!) :)

We've been good... HONEST!

I was shocked... no, freaked out that in a recent survey of over 85,000 blogs... THIS BLOG IS IN THE TOP 20% for traffic and repeat visitors! According to one fellow, I'm internet famous for the combination of this blog and my decade-old ghostly stuff...

...internet famous, eh?

Hmmm...

...and, looking above, some folks wonder where this post came from.

So, aside from the "hack-hacking" mixed with the "cough-coughing"... that's all there is to report for THIS week!

Who knows, perhaps this blog, in the next few weeks, will be RE-titled "One Old Green Bus/One Old Red Bus"!

Should we go back to concentrating on and letting folks know how things are going with our bus? (Kinda back to the good ol' days?)
