Goodbye London, Hello World! - Part Deux

In a blistering fast situation, my copy of the ITV documentary, Goodbye London, Hello World! arrived... and Sue and I sat down to enjoy it... and did we ever! What a FANTASTIC documentary that ANYONE (even non-bus enthusiasts) can enjoy...

Skating the fine line of Canadian copyright legislation (and hoping the producers and ITV won't be offended by my previews here), I can share SOME of the program with you here... but not all of it... and I'd HONESTLY recommend this documentary very highly...

It starts with a kind of condemnation of Ken Livingston (London's mayor) for being... well... a hypocrite.

For those not-in-the-know, London scrapped thousands of working buses... most of them with recently (mid-1990's) upgraded environmentally better Scania engines...

Now, the reason for this is a decent one... sorta...

The old Routemasters, despite being icons of London, are not wheelchair friendly... and yeah, I'll admit as a bus enthusiast, they needed to be scaled back.

Sadly, The Disability Rights Commission in England threatened to sue the city of London for it's egregious breach of their "Rights of the Disabled" laws... they demanded (and are demanding) that ALL Routemasters be removed from the roads... even the scant few that were running on "Tourist" routes which were far more heavily serviced by the new "bendi-buses" (articulate, single-deck buses).

From the BBC...

Many Londoners remember fondly (of the Routemaster bus) how they used to hop on and off them and pull the string to ring the bell.

But a Disability Rights Commission spokesman says it is "a bashed-up old relic from a bygone age" and the fact that it is still running on two central London heritage routes is "a disappointment".

"We've stated to Transport for London that we're not happy about the heritage routes," says Disability Rights Commission spokesman Patrick Edwards.

He stresses that in 2017 it will be illegal to have public transport that is inaccessible and "TfL (Transport for London) are opening themselves to legal action".

I've spilt enough virtual ink on this issue... which was summed up in this blog post (click here.)

Let's just say I ain't impressed with the reasoning behind removing London's famed and iconic double-deckers from EVERY route...

...and neither are many other people.

The documentary centred around a few Routemasters still running around the world, including my new hero, Ralph Weibel of Switzerland, who took his Routemaster to Le Mans...

Mr. Weibel, perhaps more than anyone else, would probably understand our dream of owning RLH 3 more than anyone else. Mr. Weibel, if you EVER read this, you REALLY impressed both myself and my wife for your love of these old buses... and your understanding of the importance of them. I hope you and RML 2650 have a long and happy journey together!

The documentary also featured one that I know will be an automatic favourite of many of you... especially Sandy Carlson on a hunch...

How can you watch the above and NOT feel a connection to these wonderful old buses in some way?

Sadly, the VAST majority of Routemasters will end up in a different place...

...which is awful, but sadly understandable.

Being Canadian, I saved what I think is the "best" for last...

After watching the whole documentary, Sue is now REALLY on my case to get back to Niagara to visit a good friend or two... and now to take a ride with Mark Beckham... who, when you watch the documentary, you'll see the SCARY thing about Mr. Beckham and ourselves when it comes to the bus...

Let's just say that his wife said something that sent a wee shiver up Sue's and my back... about their relationship having room for three... herself, her fella, and the bus.

These snips I'm sharing DO NOT DO JUSTICE to the whole piece... especially Mr. Weibel... so RUN, don't walk to your local cool video store that rents documentaries... OR watch for it on your local cooler-than-normal television station to air... Goodbye London, Hello World! was a wonderful program deserving of attention for Anglophiles, bus enthusiasts, and people who just appreciate the kooky things in life a lot!

Before I go for today, again, if Mr. Weibel ever reads this, do you have one of these...?

Yup, it's a Routemaster phone! If you don't, you really SHOULD! You probably would appreciate it far more than I do! if it was an RLH phone... :)

Thanks for calling my attention to this one, Matthew! Wow. I am at work right now and can't listen to the clips, but I could follow the story line of Teardrop Relief! Leave it to the Buddhists to remind us that everything is sacred!

I'm going to share this post with a friend whom I think will also enjoy it.

Hey SandyCarlson... The audio helps... the monks blessed the bus because of the happiness it had brought the orphans. It's a touching thing to see... I'm glad you liked it!

Hey Cindy... They will be missed... I do hope that SOMEONE in London comes to their senses and fights to keep the Heritage Routes operating.

Should we go back to concentrating on and letting folks know how things are going with our bus? (Kinda back to the good ol' days?)
