Blog Your Blessings Sundays: Sensibilities...

Blog yer Blessings

In my opinion, a "Blog Your Blessing" should never be a rant... but I'm going to have to make an exception here... because what I will be getting to is a genuine blessing... but I must go through the curse first...

I was not raised in a particular faith... I was taught to examine all faiths, and if one appealed to me, I would be supported in my beliefs or studies by my family. (For the record, I am an agnostic.)

I was raised in a "mixed" neighbourhood until grade seven... in fact, on several occasions, the "white" kids in my classroom were in the minority. I learned that colour of one's skin or ethnicity has about as much to do with their internal character as how they lace their shoes.

I was brought-up in an environment of facts and logic... that things happened for reasons... and those reasons needed a basis in hard fact. That all claims require evidence... and that when examining that evidence, you must be neutral and not skew it to your own beliefs.

It was never kept from me that things in life are occasionally "unfair" and "not pretty"... and this was not a reason to deny certain things, but again, to examine them.

My parents and peers taught me to only hate three things... Intolerance, Incompetency, and Ignorance. The latter can be rectified by learning... the middle one with experience and a willingness to learn... but the former is "forever" as a rule.

Politically, I was raised that government was there to serve and help the people... and that no "one stripe" had the perfect answers.

I was taught that no one is perfect... and that all people are flawed in some fashion...

I was taught that I should be wary of people in power that were flawed... especially when they didn't own-up to those flaws or wish to recognise them. People in power wish to stay in power... and will sell any snake-oil that might keep them there if threatened.

In some people's views, I'm VERY Conservative. In other people's views, I'm VERY Liberal...

In actuality, I'm just Matthew.

I don't follow anyone... I don't really have a political stripe... I don't "drink" anyone's "Kool-Aid" without some facts... and I demand support of those facts...

Lately, I've noticed that fear and political leanings are giving people (what they believe is,) carte blanche to espouse racists views and support ignorance of scientific facts... and the most ardent spewers of this nonsense are those who claim "fear" is what sent them to this extreme...

I am reminded of the quote below...

We cannot have free government without elections; and if the rebellion could force us to forego, or postpone a national election, it might fairly claim to have already conquered and ruined us. - Abraham Lincoln

Lincoln realised that the people MUST question their government... must make them accountable... and there should never be a reason for government to not stand up to it's harshest critics... even in times of national crisis.

To announce that there must be no criticism of the President, or that we are to stand by the President right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public. - Theodore Roosevelt

Some people have also forgotten this part too... that, indeed, all people, regardless, must be held to scrutiny.

My Blessing Today is that I was Raised-In and Continue To Live a Life of Logic, Understanding, and Respect for Deeds, Facts, and Cultures Without Taint or Skewing because of "Fear"...

I am vigilant, I am aware... but I will not sell-out my own belief systems for any man, party, group, or stripe... especially out of fear.

...and I consider it the height of cowardice to make a claim that "fear" or "respect for an office" or "person" is your justification for spewing hate or ignorance.

At last check, every major democracy holds high the individual's right to be an individual... yet, so many will put blinders on and a bag over their head because they THINK something is correct because their "stripe" says it is.

This is a great and rich blessings. Rants that are honest and constructive, as yours is, are blessings, too. They clear the thinking!

Great you mentioned Lincoln--yesterday was the birthday of the Emancipation Proclamation.

It is an alarming fact that politics, religion, and bigotry are doing a set dance for the public these days. Thanks for the blessing of something to think about.

Hey SandyCarlson... Thanks... I actually wasn't aware of the emancipation proclamation anniversary... but I'm happy about the synchronicity of the quote!

Great post!

From what you have written, I infer that you had a great childhood in terms of what it taught you. And, it seems, you use what you learn wisely.

Happy BYB Sunday and have a great week ahead.

What a great post. :)

One thing I love about Silicon Valley--and, for that matter, my workplace--is how diverse it is.

Right on, Brother! I am so sick of the administration pulling the "if you do not support us, you are not supporting our troops." It is exactly the opposite. I'll stop now...

Have a great week!

Hey NeoBluePanther... Thanks Neo... that's a big compliment!

Hi MsDemmie... Thanks! Kinda grumpy, but it's from the heart.

Hiya Linda R. Moore... Toronto is too, thank God... I'll be honest, it was three bloggers from South of our border that set me off... and I realise, they ARE the exception, not the rule... but still...

Hello CyberCelt... Kinda my point... and Lincoln's... and Roosevelt's... :)

This blog is called One Old Green Bus. Yup, the bus is green. What colour is the bus?

Nov. 30th 2008 - Jan. 23rd 2009

Due to a LARGE amount of projects which are mostly "offline", I will only be "blogging" Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays unless something REALLY begs me to blog about it.
Thanks for your understanding in this and be back to "full time blogging mode" come January 7th!

One Old Green Bus

Allow me to start with we do not own nor are we selling a bus. Just had to get that out...

This blog was started in April of 2006... during a very bad time for me and my family when money was very tight and life was very hard.

We maintained a happier outlook on life by fantasizing... talking about what we would do when times were better... and as Sue and myself are Anglophiles, England factored greatly into our "plans".

During these bad times, while looking at news items which, at the time included items about London removing their venerable old Routemasters, I came across one photo of an old green bus... and somehow, my whole family adopted it. It became very much "our bus". (Details about "our bus" are available by clicking here.)

Like most of you, I'd heard about the fellow who'd made a million dollars selling tiny ads online... and the fellow who did trades and turned a paper clip into a house... so I thought, since we couldn't make our bus actually into "our bus" (well beyond our means,) I'd try an "online" appeal... to make the focused item of our hopes into a tangible thing in our lives...

More specifically, in a burst of adult/juvenile optimism, I had hoped to show the youngest member of the family, who at the time was still very youthful and impressionable, that dreams really could become reality if you hope and, more importantly, try.

Well, I'm pretty sure you figured it out... we had limited succes in this venture... and the youngest has now reached an age where she is more traditionally "teenaged" cynical than much else about the world, which isn't a dreadful thing... but there's a "good news" portion to this... our personal situation with money is better, life has improved, and some people really liked my rambling here... so, I decided to keep things going... Yes, I will "give up" on asking for help on a bus... and have to give up on even trying as hard to get the bus through online means... and yes, be far more realistic... but I don't mind this "turn" of things as I actually enjoy venting, trying my hand at humour, and generally keeping on online presence outside my usual things.

Thanks to those who were/are "Busly Dream" enthusiasts... I suppose that our buses for now will be single-deck with the letters "TTC" emblazoned on them... but this blog will live as does our dream! (It's just a little quieter on that latter bit...)
