I am such a geek...

Like most transit riders, I try to keep a VERY low profile... y'know, book in front of me, headphones in, don't make eye contact type...

Well, the "bus-geek gene" took over after work on Tuesday and I ended up running from one window (near me) to the other... tripping and generally causing mayhem in the process...

Why?

One word...

ROUTEMASTER.

Routemaster

Yup, I saw a wonderful old closed-top Routemaster (like the one above) making it's way North along the street I travel South on... and yup, I "jockeyed" for a better look to see more of it as I didn't recognise it...

Oddly enough... or not-so-oddly enough... I'm pretty familiar with all the old double-deckers running about in Toronto, but this one was a mystery...

It was shining red and surprisingly moving swiftly (for an over-height vehicle in this city)...

When I worked "downtown" in the core, the site of the old buses wasn't too unusual... but now I work in the 'burbs which makes the sighting a unique event... speaking of it being a unique event...

Somewhere, out there, there's now a few people who are wondering WHY that "big guy" tried to get a window view whilst tripping on bags and legs saying, I'm sorry... 'Scuse me... Pardon me... Dreadfully sorry... whilst trying to be "coy" and "stealthy".

Yup, I still *tried* to be gentle and unassuming... which, in all honesty, resembled more something like rutting bull moose trying to be gentle and unassuming in a Royal Dalton Figurine museum.

Hopefully, tomorrow, when it's unlikely that an old Routemaster will pass by, they won't remember the big goof who (with major apologies) stumbled over them in his busly-sighting quest...

Granted, I've made a mental note and I will attempt to ensure I do have the "correct" seating location should the old girl make another drive-by!

Hey! Be thankful! This really seems to be, more or less, the extent of my "issues" as far as what some might consider a slight mental problem where I kinda sometimes get a little worked up...

...it could be worse...

Hello People...

Yeah, those voices stopped hours ago!

Talk About Curbside Appeal

Talk about having curbside appeal! I just love the mailbox featured in the image above. It definitely would give a touch of class to most any front yard, and is featured at an affordable price on the Mailboxixchange.com website.

This one just happens to be my own personal fave because I like its rather commanding appearance, however Mailboxixchange.com has over 1500 different mailboxes, and other decorative products for your yard/curb that you can choose from. All are high quality, and all are competitively priced.

I was surfing through their residential mailboxes listings, but this company also carries commercial mailboxes in a variety of sizes that would be suitable for any sized business establishment. You can surf on over, and check these out by clicking on any one of the links in this entry.

Before I close off though, if you are like us, and looking for a good affiliate program Mailboxixchange.com has one that you might want to take the time to look at, and consider. They are currently offering $20.00 at the point of signing up. How cool is that! B)

"Do You Know Who We Are?"

DUCK!

Trish recently pointed out that this blog and, by proxy, "us" (being the family and me,) had a bit of a fan following...

The stats and feedback seem to show this to be true... and WE DO THANK YOU...

Also, with Lexis Eldorado of So Many Blogs, So Little Time predicting that by "year's end", someone's going to realise that "we" are a human interest story... means... POSSIBLY MORE MEDIA!

CAVEAT: I'm about to relate a good story... a true story, but a good one none-the-less... and it's going to SEEM like WE HATE ALL MEDIA. This is NOT true. We have had good experiences... but let's face it... the bad ones make better "copy".

...and to be honest, they are more common for us.

Sue and I have "done" media before... and will continue to do it... for our paranormal group... but honestly, we really, Really, REALLY don't like doing it... Whereas many people ASSUME being "on TV" or "in the paper" is cool and whatnot, we take our studies and work pretty seriously... and more often than not, the media wants us to pose with The Ghostbusters symbol over our heads, dancing in a fog machine, playing with machines that go "ping".

We say things like, We just read the most fantastic report on near-death experiences by a doctor in Sweden that we're following up on...

...and they cut us off with something like, Yes, yes... But have you seen the ghost of Elvis? Have you seen anything that made you wet your pants? Do you have a picture of yourself all Gothed-out with wet pants? Can we photograph you standing in a puddle of your own urine at a really creepy cemetery? ...and can you get Elvis' ghost to show up for the shoot?

You might think I'm kidding, but I'm not...

Getting "recognised" after doing media, so far, has not been negative for us... either people DON'T quite remember where they have seen us before (usually assuming we went to school with them,) or they absolutely NEED to tell us all about their visitation from their dead Grandmother... the latter, usually loudly on public transport while we're heading for a dinner-date.

ANYWAY... allow me to share a TRUE story about a media run-in with our paranormal work... it was a lesson that taught us something about ourselves... and that is that one sure-fire way for a media outlet to impress us is to pull the old Do You Know Who I Am?? routine. Unless you're the Dali Lama, Queen Elizabeth II, or any of several deceased historical figures, this is likely to get you NOWHERE.

A few years back... early 2000's if memory serves... some producers for a Fox Television program had tapped us to do an "on-site" documentary about a haunted building we'd investigated. I was excited, not so much about being on TV, but getting back into a truly interesting building!

I told them I'd be happy to do "something" with them provided I got to pick my team and we had time and space to do what was needed while they did their schtick.

We nixed things like "under-chin wearable cameras" and assorted other stupid things the producers THOUGHT would make for better television... but the stupidity kept coming... and the more they asked, the more I kept saying to myself, "It was Fox television!!! What were you THINKING agreeing to this!?!"

The last straw was when we had a conference call with four of the investigators involved (Sue, two other "staffers", and myself) and the producers... who decided, right there and then, that they only wanted two people... myself and this girl who was not-quite up to the task... but probably the only one who would have "screamed on cue".

Yup, they didn't even want Sue. (She'll probably tell her side of that story in a Sunday Smackdown on the Paranormal Blog someday... let's just say she DARED to be... to be... HONEST!)

At that point, hearing this load of codswallop, I refused to do the show.

"So, you're telling us that you'd turn down national exposure over this?" they said...

Yup! I replied.

"You're telling me you don't want people in New York to know your name??" they crowed even more annoyed...

I'm based in Toronto? What good would being known in New York do me?

"Do you know how much money this could mean to you?" they tried... although, as a documentary show, they weren't paying me... they figured it would be like advertising revenue.

We're non-profit... and we don't charge for our stuff... so I'd personally see none of it!

...then they broke it out... and I was ready...

"DO YOU KNOW WHO WE ARE!?!"

"Yes," I replied somewhere between cheery and matter-of-fact, "You're Fox Television, the same people that brought me Temptation Islands and The Glutton Bowl."

Needless to say, I didn't hear back from them.

Darn, eh?

With these images in my mind, I do wonder... no, not wonder... WORRY about WHAT IF the media wants to do something about us and the bus?

Can we get a picture of you and Sue and the dogs, cats, and you kid... standing in a puddle of your own urine with the ghost of Liberace between you and the bus?

Um, if you're from the media and read the above thinking it is a great idea, let me spare you some time... NO.

More Than Just The Eiffel Tower

When most people outside of France think of this country they immediately conjure up images within their own minds of the Eiffel Tower. In fact the tower could be safely called a global icon of France, and yearly thousands of tourists flock to it. I even know of at least one couple that purposefully booked a Paris Hotel room in order to be in close proximity to it!

However, France is so much more than just the Eiffel Tower, The Louvre, or The Lido as seasoned, and discriminating travellers know. In fact when we go our plans including Hotels in Paris will be based around it's historic sites of interest something that was unfortunately missed out on during previous trips, such as the catacombs!

The Catacombs of Paris are a famous burial place in Paris that according to fellow historians, and friends are an absolute must-see as there is no other place like them in the world!

We will plan our other accommodations or Hotels in France with an equal consideration to historic, and cultural sites of relevance to us. As Canadians whose families both served proudly during WWII it is our joint dream to stand at the site of the Vimy Ridge monument something all Canadians travelling to France would be remiss to not see in our opinion.

The Current Time in Toronto is...

One Old Green Bus

This blog was started in April of 2006... its original itent was really twofold. One was to be a "sounding board" for it's author... and the other... well...

At the time we started this, your humble author was unemployed and going through the usual crisis situations that arise from being jobless.

We (my wife, stepdaughter, and I,) used to "amuse" ourselves (read: Take our minds off our troubles) by more-or-less fantasizing as a family about what we'd do when things "turned around". Along this route, we discussed going to England on a vacation... and in that, alighted on "double-decker buses".

We kind of adopted one bus... Regent Low Height 3... as Our Bus... and we used to talk about what we'd do with "our bus" if we got it... from fixing it up to the trips we'd take on it.

Along the way, we became students of the history of this bus which HONESTLY seemd it was truly for us... trouble was, we couldn't afford the bus and weren't in a position to work towards the bus... so we had a couple of options...

Since the bus' position was sketchy (there's a chance she might be sold for scrap or "carved up" in other ways,) we could forget about her and pretend she didn't exist...

...or we could TRY... ask for help... put our dream of owning and saving "One Old Green Bus" into the universe and see what happens...

As of February, 2008, we knew that there was a perspective buyer for the bus (not us, obviously,) and made some difficult decisions... The first was that we wouldn't "beg" for help anymore and give the little money we received to a few different charities both online and off... and the second was simply hope that either we find a corporate sponsor (for an "ad" idea we have, click here to about read that,) or even a patron who see's the value in a silly family's dream...

But, if the bus is about to be purchased by someone who's planning on restoring it and they "get there first", we wish them well and are glad that at least Our One Old Green Bus is in a safe place being looked after.

For now, though, we are still hoping WE might be the ones to get our One Old Green Bus and see a family dream come true...

Regardless, this blog WILL continue... and we will still "go for" a bus of our own... but this blog will ALWAYS be dedicated to our own One Old Green Bus.
