I have a young friend who's quest is to be "famous".
Actually, I've seen MANY people in the "blogsphere" who say that they want to be famous... heck, I know many people outside the blogsphere that have this same want.
The optics of this quest seem to be okay... the "gliterati" and whatnot... but I dunno... I've always been reminded of a quote from the late Erma Bombeck... which, in more recent times, I must paraphrase to get the point across...
Don't confuse fame with success. Paris Hilton is one, Helen Keller is the other.
I guess what it's always come down to for me is which would you rather have your name immortalized on...
- The Front Cover of People Magazine
- A Library
It's always been the latter for me.
I've always seen "fame" as like a firework... it burns brightly, and then it's gone... whereas a succesful person's legacy will always travel after them
I guess, to be a bit morbid, is how do you wish to be remembered and what for?
Years from now, provided she doesn't "shape up", how will Lindsay Lohan be remembered? How about Paris Hilton... or the aforementioned Nicole Richey? What legacy can they pass to future generations? How... pardon me, WILL they be remembered years from now?
Call me odd, but if I must aspire, I'm aiming for a Nobel Prize, not the front cover of the National Enquirer under the letters "WTF!?!"
After all, a Nobel Prize is history... the front page of the Enquirer, for the most part, will end up being a pet's toilet in short order.
Success isn't easy... and although some who crave fame think fame is difficult too, they are wrong. To be famous is easy.
Simply "stand out". Be seen, but offer nothing of relevance other than mild amusument to those walking by and you will be noted and remembered... for a little while.
...but man that really seems like setting the bar low.
Why be "interesting" and "mildly amusing" when, with a touch of effort, you can be "outstanding" and offer something to the planet?
You don't have to be Jonas Salk... just not aim to be "the best partier who EVERYBODY knows!"
Think Lindsay Lohan will ever be thought of like Jessica Tandy?
Britney Spears be considered in the same league as Joni Mitchell?
50 Cent be mentioned in the same tomes as Bob Marley?
Dr. Phil vs. Sigmund Freud?
Why aim to simply be known? Aim to be good... then great.
After all, where the firework may garner the most attention for the short term, it'll be the slow-burning, long lasting fire that warms people for lengthy times that would be most missed should it ever burn out.
The standard last note on the old blog... PLEASE SUPPORT THE DREAM!
This blog is here to help promote a dream that an entire family shares... that dream is to rescue an old London Double-Decker bus.
Please, if you have a few minutes, take some time to find out more about this bus and the kooky dream by clicking here.
This bus is VERY special to myself and the whole family, and any help any person can lend us would be most gratefully accepted.
If you or someone you know might be interested, there's our tiny banner site, HelpCoverTheBus.Com and a PayPal donation button (see the upper-right hand side of the blog) and, of course, a Cafe Press shop for T-Shirts and shtuff!
(...and who doesn't need some shtuff!)
Please help us make this dream a reality and save a piece of history!
We thank you for your support!
Please Note: We are also hoping for help from a public relations/marketing standpoint... If you might be able to assist OR know someone who might be willing to, please click here and read this entry...
See the "latest post" on the left here... I've decided to concentrate on other work so this blog is kinda done for me... THANKS kindly to my friends and regular readers... and as you'll note, I am still loitering in the blogsphere... and I'm still online... and I honestly haven't given up hope that we will get our dream bus one day! (We've just gotten REALLY quiet about it...)
