RANT - Apparently, I do worship at a church... and I wasn't even aware of it!

I've gotta unload here... as usual...

Not a myth

Arctic scientists have reported that there's 10% less "sea ice" this year so far... and we still have one more month of "thaw season" to go. Forty-four people in America are dead from heat. England and Texas are swimming in extreme rains. Romania, Europe... heck, everyone is experiencing a terribly hot Summer...

...but as usual, I'm told this is ALL natural! Nothing to be concerned about... and if you are, well then you're just one of those reactionary-types that love Al Gore and gladly drink his Kool-Aid!

PROBLEM: I'm Canadian... and scientist David Suzuki has been on about this LONG before Al Gore thought, "Maybe I should make a film!"

Are these weather patterns "normal", even when comparing to past history through geological studies? Nope. They're not. They are more extreme.

This all COULD be "normal", but please, all those who still believe that Al Gore has some kind of mandate to frighten people into voting Democrat, READ and LOOK... WE ARE PUSHING THINGS ALONG. The simple fact is...

Pollution = Bad

It's not a political viewpoint. It's not an economic viewpoint. It's FACT.

If you decide that bullets CAN NOT hurt you, I don't think all the denial in the world will help you when they give you the last cigarette and put the blindfold over your head while you're against the wall.

NOW, here's where I part from the more "ardent" environmentalists... We do not need to suddenly ban all cars. We do not need to close all the factories tomorrow. We do not need to radically make HUGE changes RIGHT AWAY.

We do, however, need to convince some people to see their proctologists and have their heads removed from their lower colons... and start making minor changes... and move towards making things better over time. BUT THIS CANNOT BE ACCOMPLISHED BY YOUR CHILDREN AND GRANDCHILDREN... It's gotta be us.

Perhaps start small... replace old incandescent light bulbs with more efficient fluorescent bulbs. We've done this and honestly, no difference in the lighting. I was wary at first assuming they'd be small, twisty versions of the awful lighting at the office... but they really aren't.

Then, perhaps, when you can, leave the car at home! Introduce your kids to the concept of a "good walk" or a "bike ride". Something too many urban kids are not familiar with. Face facts, considering the complaints about obesity and the known benefits from exercise, this should be done ASAP.

How about re-using shopping bags or using cloth bags? Think it might hurt?

Look, what's made me re-post about this is not, oddly enough, the sad state of my continent and Europe and the people dropping because of the heat... it's not the concern that Manhattan will be under water by Halloween... it's not some "tree hugging hippy" trying to save the whales...

It's a guy who is FED THE HECK UP with being told he's "wrong" and listening to "lies"... when the evidence is mounting that, indeed, he's not.

...and I am now fed up at the NEWEST stupidity... being told I worship at the "Church of Al Gore".

Get a grip, morons... do you REALLY believe the WORLD has seen his movie? For the record, I HAVE NOT SEEN IT YET.

My church is the church of healthy agnosticism... and scepticism... this means I doubt, but do not deny... I wait until the facts are in to make an educated decision on my standpoint... and guess what folks, the FACTS are IN and you may think Al Gore is a big poo-poo head... and even that David Suzuki is a big poo-poo head... and that 90% of the scientific community are a collectively a huge poo-poo head... but they ain't wrong.

I have yet to see a neutral, peer-reviewed paper from a non-partisan scientific group that says that "Global Warming" doesn't exist and that our tossing carbons into the air isn't doing a darned thing.

Again, I point out that those papers that DO say this are usually funded by... OIL COMPANIES!

...and remember, cigarette and tobacco companies had medical doctors proclaim the health BENEFITS of smoking up until the late seventies and a bit beyond!

So, please take your "Nananana Bozo - Al Gore's a Doody-Head" antics and comments and head down to Memphis... wearing a sweater and heavy jeans... because, after all, it ain't happening, right?

...just remember, if you have to travel TOO far, you may fall off the edge of the world... and that would be tragic.

I dunno why I let this get to me... perhaps it's because I think of myself as a learned person... a person of legit science...

...or maybe it's because I have kids.

Hey, I link to The DeSmog Blog for a reason.

Hey, what an outstanding rant! You have nailed it. It is very sad to see a cynical propaganda machine again starting to win the "hearts" and "minds" of quite a few people. It has always been possible to fool people into feeling like they are "clever" because they are told that they "know more than" those know-it-all scientists (creationism being but one excellent example), but perhaps never have the consequences of willful blindness been so dire.

I think Martin Durkin has single-handedly doomed my children to a much more difficult life than I have had to lead, and for that I sort of hope he burns in hell. I totally agree with all the small personal steps you've set forth. We've done them and it hasn't been painful at all. It's actually incredibly pleasant. Things are good.

But we also need to be politically involved to some extent to at least express the need for large-scale institutional changes that only government can create the incentive structure for. I think that is really important as well.

Great post! I really enjoyed reading it.

I too enjoyed reading this post!

Hey MoZe... The politicization is what's causing certain people to try and ignore the problem. Truth is, India and China are the worst offenders as far as polluting the globe, but I can't change their ways... I can only change my own... and perhaps it's a small part, but it's a start... I'm also going to and HOPE that the populace of those countries will pressure their folks to do the same. We're all crew on spaceship Earth, as McLuhan would say, and we all breath the same air... let's hope EVERYONE (regardless of location and political stripe) realises we all need to help each other with this one.

Hiya Sue... This is one area people seem to be so confused about... that, somehow, if we try to crack down on local polluters, it will hurt the economy... granted, didn't we hear that when they cleaned up acid rain? I must have missed the mass depression and massive shut-downs when the filters and protective measures WERE enacted to help stop acid rain... and the same goes for leaded paints and gas... and pretty much ANY changes industry has made.

Calm down, we're with you. Al Gore is the opposite of reactionary, and anyone who talks about his 'kool-aid' is clearly living in another dimension and should be ignored. If we had some actual political leadership around this issue in the US, it would be easy to nudge things forward. People are ready. It's the politicians who aren't.

Hey snowdahlia... I'm not really all that riled up... in fact, posting is my catharticism... my spleen venting. I dunno, I know you can't educate the world, but I hope we keep trying... after all, don't all truths go through the same three processes?

First it is ridiculed.
Secondly, it is violently opposed.
Third, it is accepted as self-evident.

At least, so sayeth Schopenhauer!

The Current Time in Toronto is...

One Old Green Bus

This blog was started in April of 2006... its original itent was really twofold. One was to be a "sounding board" for it's author... and the other... well...

At the time we started this, your humble author was unemployed and going through the usual crisis situations that arise from being jobless.

We (my wife, stepdaughter, and I,) used to "amuse" ourselves (read: Take our minds off our troubles) by more-or-less fantasizing as a family about what we'd do when things "turned around". Along this route, we discussed going to England on a vacation... and in that, alighted on "double-decker buses".

We kind of adopted one bus... Regent Low Height 3... as Our Bus... and we used to talk about what we'd do with "our bus" if we got it... from fixing it up to the trips we'd take on it.

Along the way, we became students of the history of this bus which HONESTLY seemd it was truly for us... trouble was, we couldn't afford the bus and weren't in a position to work towards the bus... so we had a couple of options...

Since the bus' position was sketchy (there's a chance she might be sold for scrap or "carved up" in other ways,) we could forget about her and pretend she didn't exist...

...or we could TRY... ask for help... put our dream of owning and saving "One Old Green Bus" into the universe and see what happens...

As of February, 2008, we knew that there was a perspective buyer for the bus (not us, obviously,) and made some difficult decisions... The first was that we wouldn't "beg" for help anymore and give the little money we received to a few different charities both online and off... and the second was simply hope that either we find a corporate sponsor (for an "ad" idea we have, click here to about read that,) or even a patron who see's the value in a silly family's dream...

But, if the bus is about to be purchased by someone who's planning on restoring it and they "get there first", we wish them well and are glad that at least Our One Old Green Bus is in a safe place being looked after.

For now, though, we are still hoping WE might be the ones to get our One Old Green Bus and see a family dream come true...

Regardless, this blog WILL continue... and we will still "go for" a bus of our own... but this blog will ALWAYS be dedicated to our own One Old Green Bus.
