Thursday Thirteen (Parte Deux of Parte the Fourth): Thirteen Random Musings...

THURSDAY THIRTEEN!

My first Thursday Thirteen (below... under the sponsored post...) was too lengthy. If you have time, GREAT! Read it, please!

...but if you're like most other blog-surfers and time is of the essence, here's a MUCH SHORTER Thursday Thirteen (yup, TWO in one day!) for you to peruse... This one is simply "Thirteen Random Thoughts and Musings"...

1 Last weekend, I learned what a "butter face" was... I didn't know before...
They say that all knowledge is wealth, but I'm not sure I'm wealthier for this knowledge.

2 The person that explained it to me didn't know what the word etymology was until I explained it to her. I'm pretty sure that although one might expect she's wealthier for this knowledge, she isn't. After all, how often does the word etymology come up in casual conversation?

3 David Blaine has on his website a musing that says, The most courageous thing a man can do is cry. I disagree, crying's easy... consoling another man who is crying is difficult.

4 I'm still trying to figure out why everyone calls it the blogosphere when they are not weblogos nor is the world in a osphere shape.

5 In my eyes, the worst thing you can say to a human being is "Who Cares". The second worse thing is "I'm disappointed in you".

6 I'm still not feeling the cowbell thing.

7 If the universe, after the big bang, is effectively spherical in nature, then, like travelling North on a globe, is there a destination point at which you will circumnavigate and be coming back the same way you just came?

8 How did "funky" get to mean what it does... also considering it's original meaning?

9 If a ghost haunts in a forest and no one is there to witness it, does it still haunt?

10 It's surprising to me that there is such a thing on the market called "plastic wood".

11 It's also surprising that we have so many "edible oil products". Has 10W-30 ever looked appealing to you? Even if it was "dressed up" to resemble something else, does this even somewhat sound appealing when you think about it?

12 "Nerd" and "Spooge" are both words that Dr. Seuss invented.

13 Do people truly remember that the traditional definition of "geek" is a side-show freak who bit the heads of live animals when they call people that work on computers "geeks"?

REMEMBER: There IS another "Thursday Thirteen" below this one that was posted TODAY... if you'd like, scroll down and have a read!

Hey Nicole... Yup, that's the truth... so next time you see a "geek", think to yourself... are they REALLY a geek... and if so, should I contact PETA?

Hello Ann... TTing is a new and great thing for me! I'm lovin' it!

Hi thebluestbutterfly... A lot of the younger fellows at my office kept using the term to describe various young women... and finally, my eldest stepling clued me in... "Everything about her is smoking hot BUTTER FACE." (But Her) Yeah, like I said, I'm not really better for knowing as of now.

Hiya Miss Profeq... Thanks for the comment... the thought is from the heart.

Hi Perri Nelson... I can only assume one has to be either Wil Ferrel or Christopher Walken to truly "feel it".

I don't have teenaged boys and I still don't know what butter face is! It sounds like I'm just as well off for not knowing! lol

I didn't know Dr. Seuss invented the word "nerd".

I knew what a geek was orginally. Yuck. I wonder why in the world they awarded computer fanatics this title?

Hi Lori ... Nope, not but daughters... and if I do say so myself, not a SINGLE "Butter Face" in the house!

Hey hazel... Up above in the comments, I 'splained it... but in a nutshell, everything about her is great but her face. ("Butter Face")

Hello Titania... As a professional computer person, I can tell you, the only living creature who's head I've ever bitten off is the occasional instance of a nosey or micro-managing boss.

Hiya Trish... The concept of a "desert treat" built at a refinery still kinda makes me shiver... that, and what is oil? A viscous liquid made from rotting plant and biological matter... Oh yeah, let's order some o' that for dinner!

Hey Alasandra... Everything about her rocks, butter face. Yeah, I'm a better human being for knowing this. :P

Hi Suni... I thought so... regardless of where. It's a "guy" thing, but it's also an empathy thing. Men, as a rule, aren't good with emotions nor empathy.

I still very clearly remember the day my father happily called me a geek at lunch and then was surprised when I was upset. He was all "But I read in the newspaper this morning that geeks and nerds are 'in'!" He'd been so pleased with himself. It was 1996 and I was working as an underpaid programmer.

Have you ever read "Geek Love" by Katherine Dunn? It's fantastic.

Terrific TT list...wonderful!

I don't like the ice cream on ice cream trucks or MacDonalds because it's edible oil. Yuck...but if you've ever read my posts on corn, you'll know that we even use oil to grow vegetables...it takes ahalf gallon of oil (for fertilizer) to grwo a bushel of corn...so how does a biodeisel made from corn help us?

The photos of the place on Vancouver Island buses are fantastic. I haven't seen them (I grew up on the island...) but have seen many of the tourist buses in Victoria...

here is my TT list...I'm slowly making my rounds this week..

Hey J. Lynne... Are you, as yet, an overpaid developer? (...and does such a thing TRULY exist?)

Hi Nicole... Agreed! and you're VERY welcome! I enjoyed your list VERY much!

Hiya Candy Minx... I haven't read that... but I'll look into it! As for biodiesel, it will be better eventually... before too long, someone WILL do away with petroleum based fertilizer. On my way to read your TT!

Re. "geek" and "butter face", my new favorite site is www.urbandictionary.com. The best thing about English for me is its endless inventiveness.
Cheers and best wishes,

Hey Jean Marie Ward... Yeah, I've cited the Urban Dictionary a few times here... but when I don't feel the "need to know" (like certain epithets), I almost avoid it! :)

One Old Green Bus

Allow me to start with we do not own nor are we selling a bus. Just had to get that out...

This blog was started in April of 2006... during a very bad time for me and my family when money was very tight and life was very hard.

We maintained a happier outlook on life by fantasizing... talking about what we would do when times were better... and as Sue and myself are Anglophiles, England factored greatly into our "plans".

During these bad times, while looking at news items which, at the time included items about London removing their venerable old Routemasters, I came across one photo of an old green bus... and somehow, my whole family adopted it. It became very much "our bus". (Details about "our bus" are available by clicking here.)

Like most of you, I'd heard about the fellow who'd made a million dollars selling tiny ads online... and the fellow who did trades and turned a paper clip into a house... so I thought, since we couldn't make our bus actually into "our bus" (well beyond our means,) I'd try an "online" appeal... to make the focused item of our hopes into a tangible thing in our lives...

More specifically, in a burst of adult/juvenile optimism, I had hoped to show the youngest member of the family, who at the time was still very youthful and impressionable, that dreams really could become reality if you hope and, more importantly, try.

Well, I'm pretty sure you figured it out... we had limited succes in this venture... and the youngest has now reached an age where she is more traditionally "teenaged" cynical than much else about the world, which isn't a dreadful thing... but there's a "good news" portion to this... our personal situation with money is better, life has improved, and some people really liked my rambling here... so, I decided to keep things going... Yes, I will "give up" on asking for help on a bus... and have to give up on even trying as hard to get the bus through online means... and yes, be far more realistic... but I don't mind this "turn" of things as I actually enjoy venting, trying my hand at humour, and generally keeping on online presence outside my usual things.

Thanks to those who were/are "Busly Dream" enthusiasts... I suppose that our buses for now will be single-deck with the letters "TTC" emblazoned on them... but this blog will live as does our dream! (It's just a little quieter on that latter bit...)
