"Get your priorities right."

I was listening to a "nationally syndicated" radio show and heard from a guest on the program, a rather "famed" fellow, that he had answered many e-mails for help and tried to assist people in finding a path to succeed.

I don't wish to say "who", but I won't lie... I was dubious of his past and was giving it some real thought... should I contact him asking for ideas/advice on what we're trying to do here?

Realistically, the fellow is known to me from being on television frequently and, as he considers himself to be a "psychic" and "mentalist", I am always a little doubtful...

After all, I'm a true sceptic... and as a TRUE sceptic, I doubt (but do not deny...)

There was a chance, the offer was put into the ether... so why not?

I gave him a brief run down about our bus... why it's important to us as a family, and what we're trying to do.

I told him I was NOT looking for money through him, but advice on what I could do...

He responded...

Hi Matt, yes I have a suggestion, go and visit a children hospital, go to the cancer ward look around and get your priorities right, I believe that if you spend your spare time helping sick kids you will be feeling more satisfaction in what you do,

(Of note: This e-mail did NOT come with a signature caveat about reproduction... the next two from him did... which is why I've done the verbatim quote above.)

For those wondering, I completely agree with his sentiments.

He's right.

Regular readers of this blog know that I struggled with this idea long and hard before committing it to "pixels".

I do, however, have to note the irony of his response... it came on the evening that this post was on top of the ol' blog... and you'll note the two top graphics in the upper-right of the blog...

I think I may need to re-iterate a few things here...

The bus is not our life.

We try to make that clear... although it is very important to us, we understand what it means in the grand scheme of the planet and those who know us well... and even regular readers here know this... we have many irons in the fire.

This blog is about a dream... a weird dream that sadly, due to other priorities which ARE more important, we can't see through.

The bus has many levels of importance to us... but I can't help pointing out the following...

Oh, please click the links below... they'll open a new browser window...

If you're in a position that you are debating helping us save the bus... or donating to a local children's hospital, give to the children's hospital PLEASE. We know how important this is and our greatest blessing is because of the fine work done in them.

If you're debating giving to a charity to defeat diseases, feed the hungry, help those in trouble... or help us... do the former please. As for defeating disease, I would love to see heart disease go down and on the Torontoghosts site, my pride and joy, you'll notice on the main page requests to give to The Canadian Cancer Society and The Crohns and Colitis Foundation... two illnesses that have affected my life horribly by affecting others I care about... and as for feeding the hungry, sadly, I have personal experience on this too.

I think we've made these points fairly clear over the last year and a bit... we've even, despite not having much ourselves, given to help where we could.

Now, if you read through our dream... understood it... see value* in it... and it was us or buying something on eBay on a whim or just want to know you helped make a small dream come true, than yes, PLEASE, help us out.

* - Value?

What value is there to saving an old stupid bus, right?

Well, it's a dream... in a nutshell, we went through over a year of extremely hard times and we "used" the bus to concentrate on... a "fantasy" to forget things like empty bellies and eviction notices... this family stayed together because of hope... and that dumb old dusty green bus was a focus of that hope.

Now, OBVIOUSLY "hope" and "fantasy" wasn't all of our life... as I am now re-employed in my field and things are steadily improving... there's evidence to the contrary there.

...but we need to clear up "back bills"... and whatnot... we're even still getting out from under back rent! (Although by Summer's end, that should be done too.)

We sat down, did our budget, and realised that we COULD save this icon ourselves now without help... but it would take AT LEAST two years... and in that time, the bus will be scrapped. This is why we're here.

If you haven't read this already, click here and read why it's so important even recently... (Opens a new browser.)

Now, I'm VERY willing to accept defeat in this... I'm willing to say, "Oh well we didn't get the bus that meant so much to us..."

...but I refuse, as with all my work, to do so without an effort... even if that effort is begging for help.

Is that wrong?

To some, including this person, it is...

...but...

Do you think this is all we're about? A "bus"?

No.

In fact, that's the point I believe...

Regular readers here KNOW this to be true.

It's simply a dream... an important dream, but a dream... and we HAD to try.

Are there more important things? YES!

There are even more important things to this family...

We just didn't want to abandon it.

If this is wrong, then that's an opinion.

Here's a question some of you (including this fellow) might have... when I wake up in the morning, and look at myself in the mirror... do I feel I've done enough "good" on the planet? No... I can always do more...

Do I feel I've put more energy into doing better things for the planet and it's inhabitants than I have into begging for the bus?

Yes.

I don't break my shoulder patting myself on the back about it... but I do what I can, where I can, how I can... as does Sue.

We ARE okay with the thought of failing with this dream... it's not a "happy" thought, but we'll be okay... and we will be able to say we tried...

...but we are still VERY blessed in many ways... and are VERY thankful for what we have. (Again, regular readers I know are aware of this too...) We try to give back for what we have... despite sometimes that only being words, perhaps efforts, and what money we can afford.

To sum up, I do not believe we should "give up"... despite what this fellow had to say.

If you believe that this is so awful... if you believe it is such a waste of energy and time... then please feel free to pass us by.

We do HOPE... and yeah, PRAY... that we will find the person (or persons) who CAN help and will... and if it's not you, that's fine...

There's much more here than "the bus" so we hope we haven't wasted your bandwidth... and you've found something of value in our efforts...

In many ways, we have...

I hope this has made things a touch more clear... especially to (perhaps) this person who wrote to me.

As a parting shot... but the truth... the man who wrote to me is, as I said, a psychic/mentalist who's done very well for himself... I can't help but notice that he hasn't invested ALL of his time into helping others from the bottom of his heart based on nothing but goodwill as he suggested I do... in fact, my request was not for money, but for advice... and he really didn't even do a good job with that if you think about it.

Hmmm...

Isn't it amazing how people like this refer to their talents as "gifts" and yet profit from them so heavily... isn't a gift meant to be free?

...just a thought...

Great Promotional & Gift Idea!

I was checking out the Custom Ink.com website earlier this afternoon. They are a company, and site that allows you to create your very own custom t-shirts, hats, and more!

I thought to myself this might be a great promotional idea for our own project, and perhaps even a fun gift idea. There is no minimum number to order for purchase, so I was thinking this might just be a great way for anyone to produce a very unique item to give as a present.

They have several different sizes, and style of apparel to choose from, and the sky is really the limit as to what you might be able to create with them. Just let your imagination run loose for a bit.

Say you are throwing a birthday party, anniversary, or some other celebratory event, you could do up custom t-shirts with a photo, and perhaps a date to mark the occasion. What a neat give-away eh!

The best part is that US, and Canadian destinations get free shipping! How cool is that! B)

If you are planning an event or looking for an original gift go have a look at what they are offering. Just click on one of the links provided in this entry.

BlogTalkers: Yo! Doofus! Get off yer butt!

BlogTalkers!

This week's question/request...

If you could go back in time, what one piece advice would you give yourself?

Shut up you old fart!

Pre-1993: "Invest heavily in Microsoft."

Hmmm... well, it would depend on how far back... and if I'd listen.

As much as heading back to me between the ages of birth and probably eleven might do the most benefit, I doubt I'd listen to myself.

Between the ages of twelve and eighteen, I'd listen intently, but be waiting for my "future self" to either talk about the apocalypse or what gadgets from "Star Trek" were finally developed in real life.

Between the ages of 19 through thirty though... aye, then I'd be interested and hang on my every word...

So let's say twenty-one...

Matthew, if you're unhappy and you know it and things aren't changing, don't be a fool... change them yourself with a change of life. Don't hold on to bad things because, in vain, you hope they will get better... they won't... they'll get worse. Go out, find better and in the process, better yourself. You damn well know you can do it... so do it. In being happier and more energized, you'll help more people and do better things than wallowing in a lot you've set yourself up in.

That would be enough... I hope...

It sounds "cryptic", but it isn't... it's because back then (and for a few years to come,) I was in a bad place that, to be honest, cost me dearly in many, many ways....

So, that or Invest heavily in Microsoft would be it.

Blog Your Blessings Sundays: Friends

Blog yer Blessings

Buddies

There's an old joke...

A friend helps you through tough times... a real friend will help you hide the bodies... a loyal friend will be sitting next to you on the bench in the jail and say, Boy, did we screw up this time!

There's truth to this joke... okay, hopefully not in the hiding of bodies and prison sentence, but a true friend is nothing to sneeze at and rarer than a perfect-red diamond.

My breakdown is as follows...

A good acquaintance will simply walk away if people are bad mouthing you and not be a part of that.

A friend will defend you if people are bad mouthing you... but not to the point of harming themselves in any way.

A good friend will defend you is people are bad mouthing you and be damned the consequences to themselves.

A loyal friend will immediately defend you, walk away from - and never again speak to the idiots saying stupid things about you and help you plot their demise later in a laboratory filled with really cool gadgets they helped you build.

Hmmm... let me try that again...

A good acquaintance will send you good wishes on an upcoming move.

A friend will offer to pick up some cleaning supplies and attend a house-warming party (with a gift!)

A good friend will help you move as best they can.

A loyal friend is the one hiking your grand piano up the stairs for you.

That's a good one...

A good acquaintance will listen to an opinion of yours and basically nod and say little.

A friend will join in on a discussion and gently counter-point you... maybe.

A good friend will discuss and point-counter-point with you on things.

A loyal friend will outright argue with you, granted in good nature, and not be worried about you suddenly despising them... or vice-versa.

There's one I bet some folks never thought about... but it's true.

The best form of friendship is a friend who's willing to buck against you with an idea, thought, or concept if they see an error or problem within it... and that same loyal friend will "work" with you to hone that idea, thought, or concept until it works without issue... not abandon the thing, but get it perfect from their point of view as well as your own.

For those not-in-the-know, Sue and I run a fairly large organization of paranormal investigators and researchers... and one thing I ask for is that people argue with me... not for the sake of argument, but to show me any errors in my ways. To allow me to learn and see things from another point of view.

Without divergence, we will never be able to learn... we will never progress... so therefore, a loyal friend for me will help me understand something from all possible viewpoints and help me sharpen my own arguments and points.

I'm fortunate... and it's why it's my blessing today...

My blessing is loyal friends....

...and why my blessing is all the more sweet is that my loyalist and best friend is Sue... my wife.

Before we were a couple, we were friends for several years... and the friendship transitioned to a perfect situation.

In my opinion, you should ALWAYS be concerned with a "friend" who always agrees with you on anything... think about that. The proverbial "Yes-Man". Is that a friend? Is that a trusted ally?

A trusted ally should ALWAYS have your best interest in their heart... even if you may disagree with their concerns.

Think of all the "drinking and driving" adverts you've seen where a friend takes the keys from another friend who THINKS they are "okay" to drive... now that's a true friend and no, they didn't agree and acquiesce to their buddy's will.

So here's to best and loyal friends... we all need 'em... some of us are lucky to have 'em... and some of us, like me, were lucky enough to look forward to spending the rest of our lives with 'em!

The Current Time in Toronto is...

One Old Green Bus

This blog was started in April of 2006... its original itent was really twofold. One was to be a "sounding board" for it's author... and the other... well...

At the time we started this, your humble author was unemployed and going through the usual crisis situations that arise from being jobless.

We (my wife, stepdaughter, and I,) used to "amuse" ourselves (read: Take our minds off our troubles) by more-or-less fantasizing as a family about what we'd do when things "turned around". Along this route, we discussed going to England on a vacation... and in that, alighted on "double-decker buses".

We kind of adopted one bus... Regent Low Height 3... as Our Bus... and we used to talk about what we'd do with "our bus" if we got it... from fixing it up to the trips we'd take on it.

Along the way, we became students of the history of this bus which HONESTLY seemd it was truly for us... trouble was, we couldn't afford the bus and weren't in a position to work towards the bus... so we had a couple of options...

Since the bus' position was sketchy (there's a chance she might be sold for scrap or "carved up" in other ways,) we could forget about her and pretend she didn't exist...

...or we could TRY... ask for help... put our dream of owning and saving "One Old Green Bus" into the universe and see what happens...

As of February, 2008, we knew that there was a perspective buyer for the bus (not us, obviously,) and made some difficult decisions... The first was that we wouldn't "beg" for help anymore and give the little money we received to a few different charities both online and off... and the second was simply hope that either we find a corporate sponsor (for an "ad" idea we have, click here to about read that,) or even a patron who see's the value in a silly family's dream...

But, if the bus is about to be purchased by someone who's planning on restoring it and they "get there first", we wish them well and are glad that at least Our One Old Green Bus is in a safe place being looked after.

For now, though, we are still hoping WE might be the ones to get our One Old Green Bus and see a family dream come true...

Regardless, this blog WILL continue... and we will still "go for" a bus of our own... but this blog will ALWAYS be dedicated to our own One Old Green Bus.
