Random Tag - Dang that Blandly Urbane Guy!

Ouch!

With sincere apologies to Gary Larson...

That bugger! I tagged him and what did he do...??? TAGGED ME RIGHT BACK!

Yup, another dreaded meme... by way of DeMediaCratic Nation...

The deal is, apparently...

Here are some questions and answers. The questions can be changed (Matthew's Note: I'm not changing them...) when you "tag" some other blogger. If you’re tagged, answer the questions on your Blog.

Well, since I tagged people earlier, I'm only tagging THREE people this time... so here's the questions...

1) Name your favoUrite band and singer. (The singer can’t be from the band)

My favourite band would be The Clash and my favourite singer is Diana Krall... although Frank is a VERY close competitor... it depends on my mood.

Heck, somedays my favourite band is any fife and drum band and my favourite singer is Nivek Ogre... so it's a tough call.

...then there's Tom Waits...

OF COURSE, however, Lionel Jeffries is a GOD always.

2) FavoUrite historical politician (domestic)? (Historical = Dead)

William Lyon Mackenzie

3) FavoUrite historical politician (International)?

Ooo... hmm... probably Abraham Lincoln.

4) You’re giving a Hollywood pitch (25 words or less) about your Blog — GO

Two paranormal investigators and their kid have a dream... to get and restore a dusty old green bus which means a lot to them on many levels.

5) Other than where you live now, what city do you like?

London, England.

...although I could add DOZENS of great cities aside London... London is my fave.

6) FavoUrite modern politician? (In office now)

BELIEVE IT OR NOT, because she's a "New Democrat" (NDP) candidate, my local member of Provincial Parliament is now a Goddess in my eyes... and this coming from someone who considers themselves a "Red Tory" or more aptly, a "Blue Liberal"... Cheri DiNovo ran a good, clean campaign, actually gives a damn about her constituency, and the latest thing totally won me over...

Recently, our MPPs gave themselves a little raise... a HEFTY raise in fact. Some, like Cheri, didn't like this as it was money better spent elsewhere.

Well, an old movie theatre nearby was being sold as it's owners shut down the business... and it was snatched up by two investors who know NOTHING about running a movie theatre, but realised the old place was a landmark. They held a meeting and fifty people showed up... they were looking for investors and Cheri invested her entire "raise" to get the theatre back up and running.

She wins right now... even if I'm not too fond of all her party's platforms.

7) Are you a Wilsonian Idealist or Nixonian Realist in foreign policy?

Neither... but this is also because I'm Canadian.

I'm a Trudeau-ist in that Canada is "cool"... a Pearson-ist in that Canada should try to remain the strong, intelligent, silent type that's respected... and other than that, I'm okay with our current policies SO FAR...

8) Favorite (change spelling in honoUr of my favoUrite American) obscure movie?

This is a tough one... because your definition of "obscure" and mine could be different...

Not Seen By Many but Mainstream*: Dirty Rotten Scoundrels

Not Seen By Many but Mainstream*: My Favourite Year

* - Not a "blockbuster".

Independent Film: Bubba Ho-Tep

Foreign (Not North-American, Aussie/Kiwi or British) Film: La Cage au Folles (GET THE SUBTITLED VERSION!)

(I would have said "Das Boot" for the above, but most folks have seen it... and if you haven't GET the subtitled version to rent!!!)

Now... to choose my three victims tagged folks...

Well, of course Sue... and I haven't pestered ThreeCollie in a while... and lastly, I'll snag Candy Minx...

Now, I admit... the last two posts you see were "time stamped"... while sick last night, I wrote them up and "post-dated" them for when you've seen them... so I will be by later (once I recover enough) to comment and alert the TWO victims tagged bloggers to let them know that I've ruined any "blogging-roll" they may be on with a DREADED meme tag!

Oh, and Blandly... you MUST learn more about French Taunters sir...

List-er-ino Fridays: Not-So Great Moments in Science...

Mad?

"If the world should blow itself up, the last audible voice would be that of an expert saying it can't be done." - Peter Ustinov

You know he was right...

I've always liked the definition of an "expert" as being someone who knows more and more about less...

Below are some hand-picked scientific notes from people that knew more than their audience did... and proved that scientists and learned men are sometime complete horses patoots.

#7: "...The demonstration that no possible combination of known substances, known forms of machinery, and known forms of force, can be united in a practical machine by which man shall fly long distance through the air, seems to the writer as complete as it is possible for the demonstration of any physical fact to be."

- Simon Newcomb, Sidelights of Astronomy published in 1906 - three years after The Wright Brothers took their maiden flight.

#6: "There has been a great deal said about a 3,000-mile high-angle rocket. In my opinion, such a thing is impossible and will be impossible for many years... I don't think anybody in the world knows how to do such a thing and I feel confident it will not be done for a very long period of time to come."

- Dr. Vannevar Bush to the U.S. senate Special Committee on Atomic Energy, 1945 (Dr. Bush was FDR's Special Science Advisor...)

#5: "That is the biggest fool thing we have ever done....The bomb will never go off, and I speak as an expert in explosives."

- Admiral William Leahy to President Harry Truman, 1945

#4 AND #3 - a DOUBLE!

"Men might as well project a voyage to the Moon as attempt to employ steam navigation against the stormy North Atlantic Ocean."

"Rail travel at high speed is not possible because passengers, unable to breathe, would die of asphyxia."

- Dr. Dionysus Lardner 1830(?)

#2: "When the Paris Exhibition closes electric light will close with it and no more be heard of."

- Prof. Erasmus Wilson 1878

#1: "Heavier-than-air flying machines are impossible."

- British Scientist Lord Kelvin 1895

I had a brilliant post today...

Yup, it was a thing of beauty... for the Friday List-Er-Ino... I typed it Thursday night after dinner... and once finished, my computer crashed.

No worries! I thought... I'll just use the restore feature in Mozzilla and bring it back! It's saved my bacon countless times!

...but as I rebooted, I started talking to Sue... and without thinking, when prompted, I clicked "Start New Session" instead of "Restore".

ARRRGH!!!!!!

I hate that...

...a lot.

Sadly, because of an outlandish workweek (LOADS of work,) and also being violently ill late last night (and taking a sick day today because of it)... I'm afraid that this is now an unscheduled "Live Morning" off from posting for me... Yup, the next three posts are "time stamp specials" written EARLY this morning... like 1am through 3am...

My post was perfect...and it had French taunters... and made fun of certain types of mouth wash... had comments about pets... how to reconcile all the issues in the Middle-East without violence... a possible cure for the common cold... a brilliant treatment of quantum string-theory physics in relation to the time-space mesh theory of relative dimensions... information and how to find the evidence on who really killed Elvis Presley... a plan that would, if used properly, develop a perfect energy system that would save the earth's environment while giving everyone in the world free power... and I even talked about Häagen-Dazs and how Kawartha Dairy is better... and mentioned that I don't work for them, have no family working for them, and no, Kawartha Dairy did NOT sponsor the post...

...all in less than 800 words.

...but 'tis all in vein thanks to my old, nasty, stinky, rotten, needs-to-be-replaced, still-running-Windows-'98 laptop.

Sue? PLEASE!!! I need a new 'puter!!!!

..dangit, that was an award winning post too that was GUARANTEED to get so many hits and comments as to assure us of help to get our bus...

Rats!

The Kid Is Going To Be 12

Yes, that right, the baby is going to be turning 12 years old in a couple of months, and party preparations have already begun. To me 12 is a milestone. It is the last year of real childhood before the teenage years kick in, and therefore I want to make this year's party extra special.

I was looking through the the Candy Under Cover.com website, and I really liked some of their birthday party favors. They are an online company that specialise in personalized candy bars, and other scrumptious favors.

If you are planning a party of any sort you really should go have a look at some of their products like their unique candy bar wrappers, which could also serve as a neat way to help celebrate an event like graduation day. The wrapper itself would make for a great keepsake that could be tucked away in my opinion. They also supply personalized mint tins.

My Disclosure Policy For Sponsored Posts

The Current Time in Toronto is...

One Old Green Bus

This blog was started in April of 2006... its original itent was really twofold. One was to be a "sounding board" for it's author... and the other... well...

At the time we started this, your humble author was unemployed and going through the usual crisis situations that arise from being jobless.

We (my wife, stepdaughter, and I,) used to "amuse" ourselves (read: Take our minds off our troubles) by more-or-less fantasizing as a family about what we'd do when things "turned around". Along this route, we discussed going to England on a vacation... and in that, alighted on "double-decker buses".

We kind of adopted one bus... Regent Low Height 3... as Our Bus... and we used to talk about what we'd do with "our bus" if we got it... from fixing it up to the trips we'd take on it.

Along the way, we became students of the history of this bus which HONESTLY seemd it was truly for us... trouble was, we couldn't afford the bus and weren't in a position to work towards the bus... so we had a couple of options...

Since the bus' position was sketchy (there's a chance she might be sold for scrap or "carved up" in other ways,) we could forget about her and pretend she didn't exist...

...or we could TRY... ask for help... put our dream of owning and saving "One Old Green Bus" into the universe and see what happens...

As of February, 2008, we knew that there was a perspective buyer for the bus (not us, obviously,) and made some difficult decisions... The first was that we wouldn't "beg" for help anymore and give the little money we received to a few different charities both online and off... and the second was simply hope that either we find a corporate sponsor (for an "ad" idea we have, click here to about read that,) or even a patron who see's the value in a silly family's dream...

But, if the bus is about to be purchased by someone who's planning on restoring it and they "get there first", we wish them well and are glad that at least Our One Old Green Bus is in a safe place being looked after.

For now, though, we are still hoping WE might be the ones to get our One Old Green Bus and see a family dream come true...

Regardless, this blog WILL continue... and we will still "go for" a bus of our own... but this blog will ALWAYS be dedicated to our own One Old Green Bus.
