Rorschach and the Paranormal...

Probably not what you think

So there I am on the Coast to Coast AM website and saw the above...

Now, there is a chance there's a "sniff" of the unknown to it... simply because it qualifies under one of my usual questions when presented with things like this... Is this image the only thing that might be considered unusual that has happened at the site?

The reason is that, the reality is that the above image is simply a very interesting splotch of something on concrete... nothing more.

This is true of so many photos presented as "paranormal" in nature. I often say to people that if you look hard enough for something, you'll find it... even if it wasn't there in the first place.

For example... have a look below...

Look Carefully

This is from Sue's site, ParaResearchers...

It's an obvious(?) face in a window... or is it?

Look carefully... and you'll notice it was just a chance location of some branches and leaves... a very cool one in some ways, but that's all...

It's called pareidolia and it's normal... in fact, it's pretty much the same thing as when we see "shapes in the clouds".

The human brain is built to find patterns and familiar shapes in otherwise chaotic images... and although the above doesn't qualify truly "chaotic" or even "busy", it's the same... it's a Rorschach test and we will look for things... and in the two cases above, it's pretty easy... but I've seen things like the image below...

Look Carefully...

Now, look... and see if you can see the faces in the image above... do you see them? Do you see the figure? Look carefully...

If you did... sorry, there are none that I know of in the image above... it's just a picture of a wooded reserve in the states that I "borrowed" from their website.

When I think of some of the more "interesting" paranormal images...

Ghostly Pics
Ghostly Pics
Ghostly Pics
Ghostly Pics

...you'll notice they aren't too hard to notice... and they resemble "people"... not smudges that if you squint just right, tilt your head twenty-two degrees to the left, and concentrate on "X" part of the picture... and...

Now this is not to say "we" (hopefully respectable) paranormal investigators will ONLY accept perfect(?) images, I do get a little upset that when people send me images of sand, rocks, forest leaves, smoke, and tell me of the "obvious" face or whatever... but only if the lighting is "just right" and my eyes are half-closed, and I'm shaking my head slightly up and down...

Sound funny?

It isn't... I get LOTS of photos sent my way like this...

...and BOY of BOY do people NOT want to hear my HONEST take on things.

I've gotten to the point where I couch my words perfectly... and ask a very important question...

Is this photo the only thing...?

Because, sometimes other things are happening, and like the neat concrete stain above, something else happened that led to an interesting(?) photo...

Then comes warning number two... and this is something people REALLY hate...

When someone snaps something really interesting and it can be explained by "normal" or "natural" means, and it came from some place (or time) that COULD lend itself to something unusual, then I ask the following question...

If you were at a haunted place, and were taking a picture and a cat jumped into the frame, would the cat then be a ghost?

It's a bit harsh... but sometimes, those people that need "proof" for whatever reason... validation of an experience is common... sadly, so it "thrill seeking" and "attention seeking"... need to be reminded...

There ARE things that are truly unexplainable... and those are important to our study... and everything is important and bears examination... but examination can also lead to answers that we may not want to hear.

I'd like to say that one day, I'd share some of the abuse comments I've received from people that have sent me images that I've been honest about... and in many cases, even showed evidence of why I said what I said... but I can't as we do promise absolute confidentiality.

Still this doesn't preclude... the image at the top of the concrete... kinda neat!

Before the would be intelligenti comment about the debunking of any of the images I posted as being "interesting" above... like The Brown Lady of Raynham Hall image... is a fraud, fake, or hoax... PLEASE cite who made this determination... and remember, a doctorate (emeritus) in English doth not a "photographic expert" (or even analyst) make.

Memo to Paris Hilton:

MEMO: I just read your interview with Barbara Walters... and if I may... please remember this little motto...

Deeds, not words.

If you think this is glib or mean, it was better than my original memo to you which was only going to read I'll believe it when I see it.

'Nuff said.

La Musée du Hyperbole...

I'm about to take a half-shot... at a website I like.

The Museum of Hoaxes is a FINE, fine site... and I only recently picked up the book written by the "curator" of the site...

It's not bad, but I got to a bit about a CBC "fake" interview between Michael Enright and Jimmy Carter... well, not really... it was a "jape" with the usually collected Enright ending up in a bickering match with "Carter"... which wasn't Carter, but an actor friend of Enright.

Well, the Museum of hoaxes commented on this...

...the controversy reached even larger proportions when both the Globe and the Mail reported the interview as fact on their front pages. The editor of the Globe later explained he hadn't realized the interview was a hoax...

Now, this seems reasonable... and shows that everyone should double-check their facts...

...just like the fellow from the Museum of Hoaxes should have.

The Globe... and the Mail...

...and no, at the time, they weren't "two different" papers...

...and I doubt they had two different editors, but you never know...

Otherwise, I enjoy the website and I'm enjoying the book... but like all true elitists, I revel in finding telling mistakes! :)

God knows I make enough of 'em!

Big Money At Pay Per Post!

Pay Per Post made a huge, and I mean HUGE announcement via a press release this morning, the contents of which I'm going to post up below. This news left me gobsmacked!

Pay Per Post this very morning has received seven million dollars in funding!!!! That is right seven million big ones!!! Seven million!!!! I just like saying it .. :D

And what is the first thing Pay Per Post has done with some of it you may be wondering??? They are doing what they always do by launching their seven day Lucky 7's promotion - sharing the love with their posties!!!!

Between right now, and over the course of the next seven days they will be releasing opportunities that any postie can grab for $10.77, $70.00, and a whopping $700.00 bux US!!! And when I say any postie, I mean anyone no matter how popular your blog is or what it's ranking in the search engines. How cool is that!!!!

If you want to make some extra money through blogging now is definitely the time to get hooked up with Pay Per Post, and get yourself into their newly released blogger directory. It's a means for advertisers to check out your writing directly, and make offers based on what you think your writing is worth.

Here is a copy of the press release in it's entirety:

The PayPerPost Revolution Accelerates, Sponsored
Blogging Marketplace Secures $7 Million Series B

Draper Fisher Jurvetson leads round and joins Board of Directors

ORLANDO, FL – (June 12, 2007) – PayPerPost, the leading marketplace for advertisers to reach bloggers and other consumer content creators, today announced it has completed a $7 million second round investment led by Draper Fisher Jurvetson, an investor in the company's Series A and one of the world’s leading high-technology venture capital firms. The financing brings the total amount of capital raised by PayPerPost to over $10 million, giving the company considerable resources for further development as the industry’s leading Consumer Generated Advertising marketplace. Additional participants in the round include existing investors Inflexion Partners and Village Ventures as well as new investor DFJ Gotham. With this investment, DFJ Managing Director Josh Stein also joins PayPerPost’s Board of Directors.

“PayPerPost created this exciting new advertising space and has established itself as the industry leader,” said Ted Murphy, chief executive officer of PayPerPost. “Although we’ve only used a portion of our first round capital, this added support from investors unlocks significant growth potential. Our content creator and advertiser ROI metrics clearly demonstrate the upside for PayPerPost’s model. We intend to use this capital to build the infrastructure, visibility and professional expertise necessary to reach and retain a greater network of advertisers and content creators than ever before.”

Since its founding in June of 2006, PayPerPost has signed more than 6,500 advertisers to its groundbreaking service, which has enabled Consumer Content Creators to be compensated for their efforts discussing specific companies, products or services via blogs, videos or other media. The content creators are required to disclose relationships with advertisers on their blog, providing transparency for the end reader. Over 125,000 Internet postings, most in the form of blogs, have already earned money for their creators through PayPerPost’s innovative marketplace. PayPerPost recently released PayPerPost Direct, a disruptive new service that allows advertisers to contract and negotiate directly with individual bloggers they identify through a safe, managed system.

“PayPerPost has laid a strong foundation for the future,” noted Tim Draper, founder and managing director of Draper Fisher Jurvetson. “It continues to attract a critical mass of participants from both the advertising and blogging communities. Analogous to Overture’s sponsored search model, we believe PayPerPost’s business model holds disruptive potential and will enable the company to thrive in the evolving paid-content arena.”

To mark the $7 million dollar funding, PayPerPost has launched a new website detailing the company’s service offering at http://www.payperpost.com. Bloggers and advertisers can easily sign up at the site and begin leveraging the self service marketplace.

Now I could offer my own suggestions as to what they should do with this huge amount of money, but n'yeah they are already doing a fantastic job without my help .. :p

Whatever they do I do know it's going to be great, and that it is going to mean even greater things for us posties in the future!

CONGRATULATIONS PAY PER POST!!!!!!

The Current Time in Toronto is...

One Old Green Bus

This blog was started in April of 2006... its original itent was really twofold. One was to be a "sounding board" for it's author... and the other... well...

At the time we started this, your humble author was unemployed and going through the usual crisis situations that arise from being jobless.

We (my wife, stepdaughter, and I,) used to "amuse" ourselves (read: Take our minds off our troubles) by more-or-less fantasizing as a family about what we'd do when things "turned around". Along this route, we discussed going to England on a vacation... and in that, alighted on "double-decker buses".

We kind of adopted one bus... Regent Low Height 3... as Our Bus... and we used to talk about what we'd do with "our bus" if we got it... from fixing it up to the trips we'd take on it.

Along the way, we became students of the history of this bus which HONESTLY seemd it was truly for us... trouble was, we couldn't afford the bus and weren't in a position to work towards the bus... so we had a couple of options...

Since the bus' position was sketchy (there's a chance she might be sold for scrap or "carved up" in other ways,) we could forget about her and pretend she didn't exist...

...or we could TRY... ask for help... put our dream of owning and saving "One Old Green Bus" into the universe and see what happens...

As of February, 2008, we knew that there was a perspective buyer for the bus (not us, obviously,) and made some difficult decisions... The first was that we wouldn't "beg" for help anymore and give the little money we received to a few different charities both online and off... and the second was simply hope that either we find a corporate sponsor (for an "ad" idea we have, click here to about read that,) or even a patron who see's the value in a silly family's dream...

But, if the bus is about to be purchased by someone who's planning on restoring it and they "get there first", we wish them well and are glad that at least Our One Old Green Bus is in a safe place being looked after.

For now, though, we are still hoping WE might be the ones to get our One Old Green Bus and see a family dream come true...

Regardless, this blog WILL continue... and we will still "go for" a bus of our own... but this blog will ALWAYS be dedicated to our own One Old Green Bus.
