Okay, back to work...

I tell you, it's been rough. I've REALLY, REALLY wanted to get more multi-media going, work harder at finding "catches" to get more traffic to the blog... do what I know it takes to get more readers and more help and eventually, by the grace of God, make the family dream come true.

Egads!

I know that since I'm not willing to post nude pictures of myself... and knowing that if I did, I might get a lot of money to STOP posting nude pictures of myself... I need to get the name/blog/URL/dream out there... to get the readers to either find our "White Knight(s)" or to find the help we need... but every time I sit down to do anything that may require a little silence and perhaps more than fifteen minutes uninterrupted work, I'll be danged if the "life" thing doesn't keep getting in the way.

It really makes me wonder how some people do it... how do they produce inventions, artwork, or anything if they have family and pets?

This ISN'T to say I don't want my family or pets... FAR FROM IT... it's just how does one managed to burn that candle on one end, let alone both?

I still have a learning curve to overcome too... as much as, indeed, my career is in high-tech, it has NOT been in media presentation and creation... in fact, due to the corporate nature of my longest job, it's been on suppressing the abilities of others to enjoy media playing on their computers! (Not a good thing in an office environment for the masses...)

So, how to/when to knuckle down and start?

Heck, aside from that, I have a feeling that should a major news agency even do a half-piece on this dream, it would have a MUCH stronger chance at "getting over" and succeeding... but how to get them to notice us?

Our press releases (two of which done by budding publicists) have failed... despite the large readership of this here blog, we've gone unnoticed... and I have a feeling I could purchase a megaphone, stand on the second or third tallest building in the city and SCREAM about this blog and our dream... and we'd still not make any headway... save a headline... Loon stands on roof of TD Centre/First Canadian Place and Screams - Torontonians Indifferent

Realistically, a "YouTube" video or a fun-flash thingy would go much further...

...but in my perfect world, I'd have both... good press and something snazzy for the peeps to look at.

Time is SO not on our side...

I 'spose I have some chances this week in the evening to TRY and work on things... provided dogs aren't freaking out, the building is quiet, a kid goes to bed without hassle, and all is quiet in the world...

...but man, that seems like such a pipe dream.

So a PLEA...

Pretty-Please?

HEY MEDIA-TYPES!!! C'mon now, you need a "puff piece" for your newscast, don't you? You need a good story to take up space? Sure, you COULD go with a water-skiing squirrel or perhaps a seventy-year-old paper boy, but how about the dream of a whacky family? Bonus is, the two adults are paranormal investigators of some note...? C'mon, what's NOT to love!?! We've been trying/hoping/dreaming of help for over a YEAR! We've written thousands of pages of original text! We've bled into this thing... NOTICE US! After all, with your help, we could see our dream come true! So c'mon! Give us a chance! Write about us! Please...?

Lotto!

Well, if that doesn't help... I still have been playing the lottery and something's weird in Canada...

The "big one" (Lotto 6/49) has been HUGE the last few draws... $30million, then $35million, then $37million... now $40million!

What's odd is that there HAVE been winners.

I thought the "jackpots" had to accumulate?

Well, we didn't win previously (obviously) but we'll try again on Wednesday for the forty-million!

...oh, and why didn't we win previously? Well, we KNEW other people were playing... and we liked them so ALTHOUGH we WERE going to play the winning numbers, we "threw the game", so to speak... Yup, we INTENTIONALLY let them win!

...so, if any of them are reading this and would care to maybe throw $25k (Canadian... it's $20k USD to do it... but the Canadian dollar is still a little weaker than the US "greenback" so we need a little extra in Canadian funds...) at us to make the dream come true as a gift for us not only throwing the game, but indeed, ROOTING for you to win, we'd be very grateful! Who knows, perhaps we'll do the same Wednesday if we feel so inclined... and then the winner there can consider the same thing!

Do you think if any of the winners mentioned above read this it would work...?

Well, it was worth a try!

Well, no promises on when I'll have the movies and/or Shockwave thingies will be ready... but I'm gonna try...

Student Loan Consolidation

Student Loans, and Student Loan Consolidation are a hot topic in many households around the country as college students prepare to graduate, and high school students look towards their own futures. This is true in our household as well, as our middle child will begin her higher education in another year, and the time to consider loans, and finances is just around the corner.

It was with much interest earlier this afternoon that I spent some time surfing around the NextStudent website, and reading through the extensive information they have posted to their website.

For instance, did you know that Student Loan Consolidation through NextStudent can actually save you A LOT of money? By combing your federal loans they can offer you a much cheaper rate at a savings of as much as sixty percent! Now that is an impressive amount of money that can be diverted to much better uses in my opinion.

If you are wondering what their fees are for this service, and I did check that out on their website, they list it as absolutely free. Yep, they charge no fees for consolidating your loans through them.

Now if you are in our position with a kid just starting out at college or if that kid is you I also recommend that you have a look at their section on Private Student Loans. These loans offer a few advantages, such as a quick application process, monies up to your full expenses, (read more on this, and terms etc on their site) no payments required until after graduation, and the money is sent right to you as opposed to the school.

There are several good reasons to have a look at what NextStudent is offering, and you can do just that by clicking through on any one of the links in this entry.

My Spidey-Sense was Tingling...

So I've dropped out of the "Blogging to Fame" contest... sorry to those who supported me and NOT TO WORRY.

Shhh!

Basically, a little bird gave me some information that really said it wasn't for me... nothing "dangerous" or terribly troublesome, just not for the dream and the Old Green Bus blog.

I have to admit, I had my doubts at the beginning... and if you read that post, you'll see I mentioned that it seemed too good to be true but figured what's the harm?

Well, honestly, there's no harm I'm aware of... but one of the telling and public signs of things was when they decreased the "first prize" award to $25k from $100k without any official notice or reason... and yeah, the site and blog looking after the contest are... well...

I'm not a "spelling" or "grammar" stickler... but when you're trying to run a bizness or commercial venture which, in the long run, one has to assume the contest is, you're going to ensure your spelling and grammar are top notch... and the SQL errors when trying to post comments, information, or anything were also a bit telling...

So, combined with some internal insight that I don't wish to share, I'm cutting my losses, not putting stock into this avenue helping us with our dream (wasting energy and resources on something I cannot believe in,) and yup, we're out.

So, I'm going to TRY and concentrate on the old, slow, but steady methods... gain the blog new readers, hope for help from the media to get the word out there (so far, that's been a bust,) and yeah, pray for a "White Knight" to help us make our dream come true...

Saviours?

...because honestly, I don't think that contest would have done it.

Eating Well While On The Road

Tis' the season for road trips, and being in southern Ontario, a road trip down south of the border often means travelling through the lovely state of Ohio! If you are going to be road tripping through Ohio this year, and find yourself anywhere near the historic Chillicothe, then you have got to treat yourself by stopping in at Pizza Chef Gourmet Pizza. Do yourself a favour, and bookmark the page I have linked to. They serve up the best pizza in the state, and at very goodly prices!

I found the business on MerchantCircle.com. This is an online directory for companies in the USA, and it's really handy for look-ups. You can search by categories, and states, which will bring up a listing for you to check out. The site has a good design, and it's user friendly! Check it out for individual coupons that you can use that are posted by the businesses that are listed.

BlogTalkers: Super-Secret Privacy Issues

BlogTalkers!

This week's question/request...

What are your opinions on the subject of giving personal information out in your blog entries? Do you use the real names of the people you blog about? Have you ever had a bad experience with someone getting ‘too much information’? I’d like to know: Do the people that you blog about ever complain that you are blogging about them?

It's a secret!

Ooo! A Goody!

I'm not too hung up on privacy... perhaps to my detriment...

I'm not one of those people that care if my local pharmacy knows how much toothpaste and what brand I buy in a given week... or my bank is watching what bills are being paid... or my phone company watches my long distance call times and amounts...

I do draw the line at generic folks knowing my bank account numbers (save my bank) or my passwords to retrieve e-mail... and I'd be upset if I found out they were reading my personal messages or monitoring my phone calls... but not as much as some, perhaps, as I really have zip to hide and if, and so far, fingers crossed I haven't, I had something to say/communicate to someone that I wished to be absolutely private, I'd do it face-to-face.

I am all for a criminal DNA bank... but I would be a little off-put with giving my DNA as a "non-criminal" to anyone in fear that the information about my health might be leaked to insurance companies... such as, imagine if the gene that shows a predisposition to cancer was found and the insurance company found out... and said, "Oh, sorry... we can't insure you EVER!"... but if I break a law (save a misdemeanour or a traffic violation,) I feel I would have given up certain rights... including privacy... and therefore, yeah, I'd give up a DNA profile then and accept it as part of my punishment.

...but this is about blogging... so if I may...

I have no issues with people knowing my name, my "situation", my thoughts and feelings... but I draw the line at my exact address, my phone number, and yes, CERTAIN names.

I've heard one too many people losing jobs because they blogged about their work... I actually LIKE my job, so that's not a real issue... but why risk it?

I do have ONE little paranoia... my steplings names and a pinpoint location of where we are.

Sadly, on the internet, there are a LOT of "bad people"... and they are bored and, if they so chose, they COULD look at a picture, remember a name and a photo, and then COULD go to a school and say, "Hello, So-and-so, your mommy and step-father sent me to pick you up."

I know, sounds bad... but I live in a city where things like this have happened a little too often.

Granted, regardless of this, one MIGHT figure it out, but our kids have been grilled, trained, and are probably more than capable of doing the right thing... but why invite it?

I worry about my venting my spleen (and my heart) here giving out too much information... but so far, fingers crossed, I've not suffered anything bad because of it. Granted, those uncomfortable with the amount of personal feeling thrown into this blog usually just won't continue to read it, I hope... Why read something if it annoys you? Also, if you're here because you're forced to thanks to a blog-hit utility like BlogSoldiers, BlogMad, or
BlogExplosion, then do what you'd do with ANY blog you started to dislike and came across... wait your "X" number of seconds and move on... I'm not about to change things because apparently a minority doesn't like it.

As for the last part of this question, have people complained because I've blogged about them? Well, I've had more complaints because I haven't blogged about certain folks than complaints because I did!

Granted, this is also because if you want me to write a nasty missive about YOU here, you've REALLY got to push my buttons... I don't believe in talking about anyone (on a personal level) that REALLY annoys me and giving them any attention. Why send them an "audience"? Why let my enemies (if they existed) accumulate and know who their comrades in the trenches are?

To be honest, the TOTAL of bloggers I sincerely blogged negatively about since starting this is two. That's it!

...and only one felt that they needed to "retaliate" in any way with a long and nasty missive on their blog.

Funny enough, they are otherwise so loathed in the "blogging community" that their rant against me and this blog actually garnered me hits, links, and even a few small donations!

Hey, as far as I'm concerned, I wish this person would hate me MORE!!!

So, I think that answers this question in detail... as usual, a lot of detail, but it's a lengthy question!

I liked this question today as I'm sure it will spur a few thoughts and comments... if not here, on other blogs...

Now lets talk about our other websites... Long, long ago, I made a decision (because I hate talking on the phone... funny for someone who desperately would love to be a radio person,) not to ever give my phone number out online in relation to my paranormal studies.

Without knowing it, I stemmed a rather bad problem that can occur...

Some (thankfully not all) folks assume that my studies are so engrossing that I don't have any sort of private life nor do I sleep, eat, or even go to the toilet... I only eat-sleep-breath ghosts and hauntings... (and history...)

Also, in that group above, witnesses and other people interested in the study assume I'm at their beckon call... that THEIR interest and THEIR story are so vital that I must be able to facilitate a personal visit and/or a phone call twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week.

Ergo: It's not unusual to have people try to get my personal contact information and feel the absolute need to try and contact me or even see me at any time or date.

This was borne out one night when a fellow, using my name and whatnot and a little sleuthing through Bell Canada, showed up at my home (pre-Sue) in the wee hours knocking at the door.

His reason? He had heard a noise in his home, "knew" it was a ghost, and wanted me to come and look.

Rule One of Ghost Investigation: Never meet face-to-face until you've sussed out the person you're meeting SAFELY. This is true with any sort of meeting, but with people that have or feel they've experienced something odd, they need support... sometimes, it's far more support than anyone can give them save living with them and holding their hand 24 x 7... and they get irate if you deem something more important than them.

THAT I've experienced... and with this fellow, it was obviously the case...

Luckily, I "talked him down", explained that the hour was bad, that I worked a day job for a living, and that chances are, by the time "we" arrived in his home, it would not be happening. I used the logic of having him keep a log... time, date, what happened, where... and that would be sufficient for any decent investigator... and then we could look for patterns and build a visit, if necessary, based on that.

This placated him... but it very easily could not have worked.

...and I know a story where two good investigators were hounded in the wee hours with phone call after phone call by another investigator incensed that they did not want to come on an investigation with him... he asked them (via phone) at 11pm and then barraged them with calls until 3am... and the place he was going was a "well known haunt" that they had been to countless times and he had no "special" reason for going this night.

So, I do keep my address, phone number, and workplace secret... this is more for those people that just don't understand that although it's a 24 x 7 world, but not everyone is a 24 x 7 person.

In my eyes, this is what e-mail is for.

Online Shopping With Coupons

My mother was a coupon clipper, and I guess that growing up her own thriftiness has rubbed off on me. I like to save money at all my fave online shops by using coupons or coupon codes.

Right now I'm getting ready to stock up on summer reading materials, and I am checking out the Amazon coupons, and deals that are currently available through Coupon Chief. If you like shopping at Amazon just click on the link to obtain coupon codes to use at the checkout. They also have over a thousand other merchants listed so even if you are not into Amazon, you'll definitely find money saving codes on other products, and services you do enjoy!

Coupon Chief has also added some "how-to" screen shots to help out newer users.

Cool eh!

My Disclosure Policy For Sponsored Posts

The Current Time in Toronto is...

One Old Green Bus

This blog was started in April of 2006... its original itent was really twofold. One was to be a "sounding board" for it's author... and the other... well...

At the time we started this, your humble author was unemployed and going through the usual crisis situations that arise from being jobless.

We (my wife, stepdaughter, and I,) used to "amuse" ourselves (read: Take our minds off our troubles) by more-or-less fantasizing as a family about what we'd do when things "turned around". Along this route, we discussed going to England on a vacation... and in that, alighted on "double-decker buses".

We kind of adopted one bus... Regent Low Height 3... as Our Bus... and we used to talk about what we'd do with "our bus" if we got it... from fixing it up to the trips we'd take on it.

Along the way, we became students of the history of this bus which HONESTLY seemd it was truly for us... trouble was, we couldn't afford the bus and weren't in a position to work towards the bus... so we had a couple of options...

Since the bus' position was sketchy (there's a chance she might be sold for scrap or "carved up" in other ways,) we could forget about her and pretend she didn't exist...

...or we could TRY... ask for help... put our dream of owning and saving "One Old Green Bus" into the universe and see what happens...

As of February, 2008, we knew that there was a perspective buyer for the bus (not us, obviously,) and made some difficult decisions... The first was that we wouldn't "beg" for help anymore and give the little money we received to a few different charities both online and off... and the second was simply hope that either we find a corporate sponsor (for an "ad" idea we have, click here to about read that,) or even a patron who see's the value in a silly family's dream...

But, if the bus is about to be purchased by someone who's planning on restoring it and they "get there first", we wish them well and are glad that at least Our One Old Green Bus is in a safe place being looked after.

For now, though, we are still hoping WE might be the ones to get our One Old Green Bus and see a family dream come true...

Regardless, this blog WILL continue... and we will still "go for" a bus of our own... but this blog will ALWAYS be dedicated to our own One Old Green Bus.
