List-er-ino Fridays: Five Places That You Can Only Find in Canada

My home country, like all countries, has it's share of unique and different place names... at least, I think the five I've selected are unique to Canada... although who knows...

It's Not What You Think

Granted, names and making fun of names in GOOD humour is normal... after all, there's a town named "Cold Water" here in Ontario... and a fellow by the name of Richard Shrivels purposely moved there just to have business cards that said "DICK SHRIVELS in Cold Water". (This is true and Sue already blogged about it here!) To the best of my knowledge, Dick Shrivels STILL in Cold Water...

Of course, there's also Beeton, Ontario... and driving instructions would never be complete without suggesting one take the highway and use the Beeton Off-Ramp... and there is a Beeton Wives Club.

...but I digress...

Here's FIVE place that (again, to the best of my knowledge) are only in Canada...

Punkeydoodles Corners

Nestled near Kitchener, Ontario is Punkeydoodles Corners... It was a stagecoach stop in the nineteenth-century run by a German immigrant who may have inadvertently given it its unusual name when he'd belt out the tune "Yankee Doodle" and murder the original lyrics... which, considering the popularity of the Americans in nineteenth-century Canada, was probably beloved by all.

Of course, this is only ONE possibility, the other is that "punkeydoodle" was a Victorian-aged nursery-slang word for "frittering about" and wasting time.

Which is the origin of the town? Your guess is as good as the next!

Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump

A wonderful park in the Province of Alberta, it's unique name is based on a method of hunting bison that the natives used... basically, you "heard" them up a hill with a cliff and... well, you get the idea. Needless to say, the park name is from such hunting done there way back when... and yes, there is a ten-meter cliff.

It's a UNESCO World Heritage Site!

Swastika

Okay, we ALL know that the "broken cross" known as the Swastika was around long before some maniacal home decorator with an odd little moustache adopted it for his political party in Germany that led to a little spat known as WWII... and a lot of other horrible things.

In fact, Swastika, Ontario had that name as of 1908!

James and William Dusty were miners who set up shop there when miners were streaming in to Ontario's North.

Needless to say, there were calls to "change the name" during World War II, but the town stood it's ground and claimed, "To hell with Hitler! We had it first!" and the name remains the same.

Of note, "Berlin, Ontario" did cave in WWI and became "Kitchener"... so we're not all so solid here in Canada as the residents of Swastika!

Ochiichagwebabigoining

Okay, it's also known as Dalles, Ontario... but it's traditional name (and still used by the local First Nations groups,) is Ochiichagwebabigoining.

How does one pronounce this? You got me!

It's up near Kenora, if that helps! :)

Dildo

I'm making this up, aren't I?

Nope!

As any GOOD Canadian knows, Dildo is in the lovely Maritime province of Newfoundland... NewFOUNDLand... Newfundland... NewFoundLund... however you wish to pronounce it... but no mistaking Dildo's pronounciation.

No, it is not named after an "adult toy", apparently it's also the name of an old glass cylander... an "arm of water"... and is found in the refrain of many songs that go "Hey Nonny-Nonny" in their original form.

At least, according to the book Sue bought me for my birthday, Cassleman's Canadian Words.

You have to wonder though... with a province that support Dildo, Conception Bay, and Come-By-Chance, what's REALLY on the mind of those folks out East... or "Down Home" as they prefer...

I won't do them the injustice of calling the "Newfies".

...and with a hey-nonny-nonny, I think I'll end this list!

Oh, and I know there's other places I've missed... and many outside Canada... and I ask you all to perhaps share some of the ones you know in the ol' comments section...

Yeah, I miss it...

*Sigh*

Everyday, I walk past my scarlet tunic hanging mournfully on the door hanger... and my green jacket... and my white jacket...

*Sigh*

I told the fellows three years ago that chances are, I wouldn't be in the field until I drove there in my bus... and sadly, that's probably more true than I'd care to think about.

(I love this one above... aside from the drummers, the words of a child asking if they can sit on the black towel now really sum up these events in many ways... long story...)

What's worse for me in some ways is doing the webwork for one of my regiments... The Incorporated Militia of Upper Canada... or "eye-muck" for short... I have a standing invitation with them to join in, but the new job, some lingering financial concerns, and lack of a decent vehicle make it impossible.

*Sigh*

One day, perhaps...

Besides, at these events, thanks to the time it takes and the expense, it's an "older fellows thing"... meaning I'm one of the YOUNGER folks out there when I go... and at forty, that's a rare thing!

Oh, the battle in the videos... The Battle of Stoney Creek... it's one of the five or six "biggies" during the Summer that happen... and yes, it did really happen long ago and the re-enactment is done on the actual site...

...and almost no Canadians know the name Billy Green... and I can't help but think if he was American, there'd be a couple of towns and a holiday named after him!

...and don't even get me started on another participant in that battle that few but historians and hard-core enthusiasts know, Fitzgibbon!

*Double-Sigh*

Oh! The Bus! (A Bad Poem)

One Old Green Bus

Do you believe that someone suggested to us,
That I write down a poem or verse about the bus.

To do up a stanza or two about our dream,
that perhaps will not go sight-unseen.

They suggested something clever would set people agog,
and perhaps they may copy it to their own blog!

Quite personally, for all my tries and intent,
my abilities at verse are quite non-existent.

My rhyming's absurd leaves much to be desired.
My timing is horrendous and rhythm uninspired.

In short, if you really must know,
I'll give it a small tiny go...

We were very poor and needed distraction,
from the woes of having a life of dissatisfaction.

While bored and online, I came upon a picture of an old bus,
and as fate would have it, it became a "thing" for all of us!

So we talked about our plans if we had such a vehicle,
vacations, road-trips, and many things adorable!

Well, things have improved for us with money,
a job, bills paid, a land of milk and honey!

But the bus is in peril of being sold for scrap,
or worse being carved up beyond repair, OH SNAP!

So here we are, asking for help with our quest,
to own our old bus, and ensure it's not messed!

Yes, we could save up ourselves for the ride,
but it would take a few years, and time is not on our side.

So yes, we are begging for any help you can give or share,
support, gifts, publicity, anything you can spare.

Save the old bus, and make a dream come true!
If you can help, then God bless you!

So there, I've fulfilled my poetic agreement,
I'm sure that as of now, you'll understand my bereavement...

My poetry skills are right up there with James McIntyre,
and on that note, this prose I retire!

The Current Time in Toronto is...

One Old Green Bus

This blog was started in April of 2006... its original itent was really twofold. One was to be a "sounding board" for it's author... and the other... well...

At the time we started this, your humble author was unemployed and going through the usual crisis situations that arise from being jobless.

We (my wife, stepdaughter, and I,) used to "amuse" ourselves (read: Take our minds off our troubles) by more-or-less fantasizing as a family about what we'd do when things "turned around". Along this route, we discussed going to England on a vacation... and in that, alighted on "double-decker buses".

We kind of adopted one bus... Regent Low Height 3... as Our Bus... and we used to talk about what we'd do with "our bus" if we got it... from fixing it up to the trips we'd take on it.

Along the way, we became students of the history of this bus which HONESTLY seemd it was truly for us... trouble was, we couldn't afford the bus and weren't in a position to work towards the bus... so we had a couple of options...

Since the bus' position was sketchy (there's a chance she might be sold for scrap or "carved up" in other ways,) we could forget about her and pretend she didn't exist...

...or we could TRY... ask for help... put our dream of owning and saving "One Old Green Bus" into the universe and see what happens...

As of February, 2008, we knew that there was a perspective buyer for the bus (not us, obviously,) and made some difficult decisions... The first was that we wouldn't "beg" for help anymore and give the little money we received to a few different charities both online and off... and the second was simply hope that either we find a corporate sponsor (for an "ad" idea we have, click here to about read that,) or even a patron who see's the value in a silly family's dream...

But, if the bus is about to be purchased by someone who's planning on restoring it and they "get there first", we wish them well and are glad that at least Our One Old Green Bus is in a safe place being looked after.

For now, though, we are still hoping WE might be the ones to get our One Old Green Bus and see a family dream come true...

Regardless, this blog WILL continue... and we will still "go for" a bus of our own... but this blog will ALWAYS be dedicated to our own One Old Green Bus.
