Before I get started, I noticed this question was submitted by Sue... and that frightens me... You see, normally I can be a little tongue-in-cheek or possibly consider answering in a more comedic sense... and I don't feel the icey sting of the questions author on me... but this time, the questions author is sitting four feet away from me... ((shiver))
This week's question/request...
If you could, would you add or subtract the number of hours in a day, and how would your decision impact your daily life?
Okay, what a silly question. (Well, there goes my night...)
Seriously, it depends on the day...
Let's take yesterday for example...
The weather was wonderful, there was a community yard/lawn/garage sale, the kid was in a good mood and hangin' with friends while the community events were going on which gave Sue and I a little privacy for a few hours... then she was off for a sleep-over/birthday part in an area of our neighbourhood where the homes average at over $1million-plus to buy which we just like walking through to sorta-gaze at the lovely architecture... which we walked her to with our puppies... then we came home, snuggled up together, had a LATE dinner, and watched a bad-but-not-awful film (From Hell with Johnny Depp) before discussing the Ripper murder case at length and then heading for bed.
That day could have stood to be a good ten-hours longer.
Now, let's examine Thursday...
Woke up in an absolute haze not wanting to get out of bed. The kid woke up a little late in a FOUL humour. The temperature outside was scorching. Work was very, VERY busy. The subway was packed on the commute back and forth, on getting home, the kid was in a weird mood as plans to go to an amusement park two-weekends away had been kaibashed by her BFF's ("Best Friend Forever") birthday party... so she was roller-coastering happy for a part, miserable because she wanted to go on the trip to Wonderland. My stomach was a bit "off" so I passed on dinner... and to be honest, I just wanted to go RIGHT to bed.
That day should have been cut by at least four hours.
Ergo: In answer to the question, I wish we could have "variable length days" depending on the situation...
Imagine...
"Hey, boss-fella... It's been hectic and my back's a bit achey... I'd rather be home so can I shave two-hours from the day and head out?"
"Hey, boss-fella... Today's been very productive and I've got a couple of systems I really want to finish to make tomorrow a lot better. Mind if I extend the day by an hour and a half to finish up these boxes?"
"Family - You guys have been whacky today... and not in a good way... and work really drained me. I'm gonna cut this day short by two hours... Little-one, off to bed. Dogs, get sleepy. Sue, let's head for the covers ourself rapidly."
"Family - It's been really, really fun being home tonight! You guys make me glad to be around... Let's extend the day by three hours... there's popcorn to be eaten and probably a good movie to watch... or maybe a walk in a local park with the boys."
Yup, that would be the ticket.
I think those that say, "There aren't enough hours in the day." forget that, in essence, they'd probably be happier more often than not if there were LESS hours in a day sometimes, and many more hours in a day at others...
In terms of "time placement", think this way...
- Time spent in a dentist chair...
- Time spent on vacation...
If you'd like to prolong the former... either you're a dentist and you're billing for that time and not actually sitting IN the chair... or you have a bit of a weird kink that only Bill Murray's character shared with you in the movie Little Shop of Horrors.
If it's the latter, then I have a sneaking suspicion you're in the majority.
'Nuff said.

THANKS kindly to my friends and regular readers... and as you'll note, I am still loitering in the blogsphere... and I'm still online... and I honestly haven't given up hope that we will get our dream bus one day! (We've just gotten REALLY quiet about it...)
