No Opportunity Gained..

I am a pop-culture idiot... I assume...

There was an article in yesterdays Metro newspaper in Toronto about a new show coming up on the CBC called "No Opportunity Wasted"... which is a transplanted show from the united states based on a book (and the show is hosted by) Phil Keoghan best known right now as the host for The Amazing Race.

Phil Keoghan

Now, why I'm a pop-culture idiot is, without cable, I've never seen the show before... and reading about it in the newspaper, it sounded like this...

  • Make a list of the accomplishments you wish to see in your life
  • If the show likes you, we'll give you seventy-two hours to accomplish them (or one) and furnish what you need to make it happen.

Now, I read this and then read how this Canadian version would be "auditioning people" for the show in Toronto... where we live.

I was ecstatic! I thought, THIS would be perfect! Yup, this would be a possibility to make our dream come true...

Sadly, though, on the day they are doing auditions, I have to work... so I went to the website... the American one first sadly... and saw the e-mail address to send your dream list into!

I read through some of the lists posted... and thought, Our dream and goal is surely worthy... I'll send it in with the other goals I have too just in case!

Now, as a rule, I have a whopping fifteen minutes between getting in the door and my work-day beginning at the office... usually, I start working right away, but I am always cognisant that this is my time... so today, I used it for me...

I popped in my personal memory stick (USB Flash Drive) to my computer at work and started up my personal copy of Firefox Mobile and began typing... my eleven biggest goals and wishes... the ones that are a little less "mundane" as these things go, but are important...

Then, before sending it off, I thought, Hmmm... best check the Canadian site - if there is one - and send a copy there too...

Well, as you can see by the link at the top, there is a Canadian site... and I read through it and lo and behold, it is not a show about dreams and goals... unless that dream or goal is to overcome a fear.

In fact, the Canadian one is quite explicit (moreso than the American site,) that this is the case...

...and although I do qualify in every department to be on their show otherwise, I can't say any of my goals and dreams were based around losing a fear.

So, I kaibashed it.

Still, I thought you all might want to see/read my eleven things... they are a bit different than the ones I did for a meme sent to me by Ms. Demmie because, well, they're a little more about "dreams" than "goals"... so here they are in the e-mail I was going to send into the show...

It's sad, really... I'd love a chance to "audition" for the program and I'm in Toronto, Ontario, Canada... but I just started a new job that needs me this Saturday (The day of the auditions) and cannot take time out from it... I suppose that although dreams and goals are VERY important, reality and security must take precedence so I will have to miss out on this opportunity.

None-the-less, I thought I'd share my dreams and goals anyway...

1. Successfully rescue/own Regent Low Height 3 (and old double-decker bus in Santa Rosa, California that means a great deal to my whole family.)

2. Visit England - Reason One - My wife and I are "common law", we have always dreamed about being married (properly) in a small, ancient church somewhere in the English countryside with my three step-daughters (eleven, seventeen, and twenty) in attendance.

3. Visit England - Reason Two - My wife and I are both paranormal investigators... there are MANY places we'd like to do some work across the pond looking into ghostly phenomena... like Muncaster Castle, Longleat House, and the ruins of Berry Pomeroy Castle.

4. Visit England - Reason Three - My wife and I are also involved in historical re-enactments (War of 1812) and have made many friends who do Napoleonic re-enactments in Britain and France... most notably The Connaught Rangers group. It would be fantastic to talk with them and here stories about re-enacting the same period but in Europe.

5. Visit England - Reason Four - Through "blogging", we've made several very good "online" friends in England and would love to visit them "in real life"... most notably Andy from "The Spicy Cauldron" and Nicola from "Life at the Edge".

6. Visit England - Reason Five - Both my wife and I are historians... and my wife is a HUGE "Tudor Era" fan... and to visit the sites important to Henry VIII and Elizabeth I would be a dream come true for her... and therefore, a dream come true for me.

7: Visit England - Reason Six - My wife is also an amateur genealogist and we discovered in my family some fascinating characters... and we both would like to visit their old stomping grounds... look into my roots, so to speak.

8. Visit England - Final Reason - We would love to meet and talk with Mr. Ewen Pring who is probably the authority on the type of bus mentioned at the top of the list... To visit his shop, see his buses, and find out more (first hand) of the challenges of owning/restoring one of these vehicles would not only be prudent, but extremely helpful should we achieve the first part of this list.

9. Obtain my drivers license. This seems odd for someone so wound up on getting an old double-decker bus, but I've always lived in an urban environment and never needed one before thanks to public transit. In some ways, this SHOULD come before everything else, but I still live in an urban environment and still use public transportation for getting about... and if we do succeed in the first goal, it'll be some time before the bus is ready to roll on it's own power. Time is on my side with this, but it's still a goal.

10. Acquire some equipment to make our hobby of paranormal investigation a little better... like a thermal cam, portable digital disc recorder, and a few other sundry items... we aren't out to prove that ghosts are real, but we are out to try and answer some questions... and those "toys" would be invaluable to our cause.

11. Take my wife and I to a spa/inn somewhere in a historic part of Ontario to enjoy a three-day weekend where our only concern should be where we will go and explore next.

So, there you have it... take it for what it's worth... I doubt seventy-two hours would do it though...

Hey, at least you no know what would be happening if we win a lottery or come into a BIG windfall!

One wonders, however... perhaps I should have said that my "goal and dream was to bungee jump off the roof of RLH 3 while it was parked next to the Don River...

...that might have qualified and made the grade! :)

The standard last note on the old blog... PLEASE SUPPORT THE DREAM!

This blog is here to help promote a dream that an entire family shares... that dream is to rescue an old London Double-Decker bus.

What a shame you didn't live just over the border! (For this particular exercise!)

Hey MsDemmie... I have a feeling it's the same show on both sides of the border... just the "sample lists" were amusing to the producers.

Agree with MsDemmie there. Also, never heard of mobile Firefox until I read the above and following the link to find out more as I have a USB stick and it'd be handy to put on there.

D and I would love to see you. We'd really like to come over to Canada and do some exploring. x

Hello Andy... Yeah, "Mobile Firefox" is GREAT! You have to love open-source browsers! The nice thing about it is being able to port it with all my passwords to various locations knowing it's safe since I run it off my flash drive. Very handy little thing indeed!

We'd LOVE to see you guys on this side of the pond... sadly, most folks from your neck of the woods want to see the "wilds" here (and they do exist) and we live in the big city, but I'm sure we can find a way to get out to the country should you come!

The Current Time in Toronto is...

One Old Green Bus

This blog is (more or less) about the attempts to acquire a dusty, old, double-decker bus...restore, and refurbish her...for use as a camper/RV, and day tripper for fun, and travel

The bus is a Regent Low Height (to be exact, RLH 3) in Santa Rosa, California... To purchase and ship it to our home in Toronto, Ontario, Canada will require a minimum of $20k in US dollars to achieve...

As goofy as it may seem, owning this old, dusty, non-running, needs a tonne of work bus would be a dream come true for our family.
