Blog Your Blessings Sundays: People that just do things 'cuz they can...

Blog yer Blessings

Folks that do things "Just 'Cuz They Can" is a double-edged sword sometimes, but I'm talking about the more altruistic types...

I hope we've all heard the stories about people that make a bunch of sandwiches and then hand them out to the homeless and/or hungry... or the folks that decide to suddenly clean a park to the best of their ability...

These are done not for a "brownie point" or for recognition most times... but they are done just 'cuz.

Now, here's the other edge of that sword... this week, we were hacked not once, but twice.

The SQL Databases on the blogs were hacked to stop allowing people to comment... OR we could release all "spam killers" and then comments would work. Chances are, this wasn't a "hack just 'cuz", but the spammers working to earn their daily bread.

...but the second hack WAS a "just 'cuz" situation...

Someone found an exploit on our main paranormal server... a piece of nasty software that we'd long stopped using, but neglected to delete... and this gave the hackers a "back-door" in... and they deleted the entire contents of our server leaving only a message that we had been hacked.

They were also nice enough in that message to let us know who "they" were and where to find them online... and why did they delete a decades worth or work by a group of people working in a non-profit situation?

The comment on their message board was Go look at this! ROTFLMAO!

Thankfully, we do relatively constant backups, but we did lose a day-and-a-half's worth of work... and the enterprise cost us $15 in a "restore fee" on our server.

Again, nothing like finding your hard work deleted so someone could ROTFLMAO., we SHOULD be cursing and feel cursed... but you know what...

#1: The fellow that built the original "spam killer" which was working so wonderfully on this blog built a new and better one for the "newer" version of the blog software... so we updated and are using it with 100% effectiveness.

Total Cost to us for This Man's Work? Nothing. He gives the thing away.

#2: The software that we use for our backups worked brilliantly and saved us from probably a living nightmare of losing a tonne of work.

Total Cost to us for This Package Which Probably Took Months to Perfect? Nada. It's freeware.

That's online two situations...

I look through my computer and see dozens and dozens of "free" software things I use... and much of our blogware and whatnot are free... and our message boards... and many, many other things.

...and why do these people GIVE their efforts in building this software away? Just 'cuz.

Sure, they ask occasionally for donations (although the "spam killer" and the backup software we use doesn't) but these folks KNOW that their efforts helped save us... and countless others... so they just do it...

"Just 'Cuz."

Come to think about it... see that thermometer on the sidebar? Sure, it's not gone up a whole lot... and still has a ways to go... but why has it moved at all? It's because people that could, did... and they did it "Just 'Cuz"... and we appreciate it as their "Just 'Cuz" may make an entire family's dream come true... how great is that?

So my blessing for today is a shout-out to ALL those who do GOOD things just because they can... without 'em, we here would have been sunk.

Bless you folks... I will return the karmic favour in some way to someone, I assure you.

Oh, and don't forget... if you tried to comment here earlier and couldn't, we are fixed up! Comment away! ...oh, and DO let me know if the blog "looks weird" or "doesn't work"... it is a new upgrade and basically a new installation... if there's a bug to fix, I'll fix it ASAP!

The standard last note on the old blog... PLEASE SUPPORT THE DREAM!

This blog is here to help promote a dream that an entire family shares... that dream is to rescue an old London Double-Decker bus.

Please, if you have a few minutes, take some time to find out more about this bus and the kooky dream by clicking here.

This bus is VERY special to myself and the whole family, and any help any person can lend us would be most gratefully accepted.

If you or someone you know might be interested, there's our tiny banner site, HelpCoverTheBus.Com and a PayPal donation button (see the upper-right hand side of the blog) and, of course, a Cafe Press shop for T-Shirts and shtuff!
(...and who doesn't need some shtuff!)

Please help us make this dream a reality and save a piece of history!

We thank you for your support!

Please Note: We are also hoping for help from a public relations/marketing standpoint... If you might be able to assist OR know someone who might be willing to, please click here and read this entry...

You are blessed in many ways. I am glad you did not have to learn about backup and restoration the hard way.

Were you able to determine the IP address of the hacker or any information that might help you?

I hate being hacked.

What a great post.. It's always a wonderful thing when you can look past the awful mean people and see the wonderful nice folks that cancel them out and make life in this strange world worth living.

Hey MsDemmie... Just responding 'cuz I can! :)

Hi CyberCelt... They actually left their URL to the message board they frequent. Sadly, there's little anyone can do legally and little anyone can do to stop them... save ensure that all exploits are gone. We've done a "decent" job now... I hope.

Hello Marilyn... I try to make lemonade out of life's lemons... and realistically, I still believe that there is more "good" on the planet than "bad"... just the "bad" is more noticeable. When you think we managed several years without a major hack, we've done well... so we got whacked bad this past weekend... all is right with the world now. :)

I like the new blog. I have never been able to figure out hackers . . . what pleasure can be had from ruining someone else's work/life? It baffles me.

Hey JHS... You got me... I 'spose their 15 minutes of pixelated fame to a very small group of people. Reading their message board was between perplexing and agonizing... one day, one hopes, they'll be in the "hack-ees" position... then I betcha they don't find it as amusing.
