BlogTalkers: Everybody talks about it, but no one does anything about it...

This week's question/request...

Why are people obsessed with the weather? And if you watch the Weather Channel, why?

Sam Clemmens

Everybody talks about the weather, but nobody does anything about it.

Hmmm... I wonder if Rob, who put forward this question, is hoping to hear from one of those folks who sit and watch the "Weather Channels" for hours and hours... of which, I was never one of them.

Actually, we don't even have cable or satellite so we get our weather information via radio or through the online offerings...

...but I can safely say the only time we obsess about the weather is when we're in the midst of or are facing an oncoming storm.

Other than that, we're in an urban setting and the weather doesn't HAVE to affect us a whole lot...

(...granted, we live in an old building who's power system doesn't allow for air-conditioning so...)

Still, to my mind, save those I knew who either made their daily bread through means affected by the weather and therefore HAD to keep an eye on things and meteorologists, why would I think people obsess with weather...

Well, here's two reasons I can think of...

Space! The Final Frontier!
Space! The Final Frontier!

#1: Someone who's been listening to Art Bell a little too much.

For those not in the know, Art Bell is the part-time (former full-time) host of a radio program known as Coast to Coast AM which is about the paranormal, conspiracy theories, and other such things.

Art is also an author... he co-authored a book called The Coming Global Superstorm as he is a firm believer in the inevitable disaster that awaits the planet from combinations of cyclical weather patterns, pole shifts, and of course, global warming.

To be blunt, if you feel Al Gore presented "The Worst Case Scenario" with his documentary "An Inconvenient Truth", Bell thinks Gore's an optimist.

...don't even get me started on HAARP and all this...

Ergo: Many people are watching for the slightest thing to "panic" about... to "worry" about... to get all in a knot about.

Now, I've given the strongest situation using Art Bell... but I have met people that are able to tell me every major "concern" weather-wise that's coming our way in the next "X" days... perhaps they're glued to the Weather Channel?

Space! The Final Frontier!
Space! The Final Frontier!

...this next one is a little salacious... but I did know ONE person like this...

#2: Someone's got a crush on the weather-person!

Don't laugh... and NO, it wasn't me... but I did have a friend many years back who watched the weather channel at a particular time here in Canada because at one point, they had a former actress (a very pretty blond woman) doing the hosting during one of the "shifts"... and he was quite content to watch and watch... be honest, it was more than a little creepy. Kind of a gentle form of stalking...

Actually, to be more legit, he'd have the station on in the background... not "glued" to it... but still... I found it tantamount to those who watched Baywatch with the sound off... but with less reason... if that makes sense.

Either way, it's a possibility as to a reason people watch.

Space! The Final Frontier!
Space! The Final Frontier!

Now, since I don't have cable or satellite and can only speak of things a few years back, I know that the Canadian weather channel often showed three-minute "filler" documentaries that would sometimes hook me into leaving it on the station for a bit while channel surfing... mostly docs about small towns and cities in the country... mini-travelogues... they also occasionally did a "science news" bit... but since these weren't "scheduled", it was hit or miss and I alway found them while flying up the dial towards other stations.

Space! The Final Frontier!

...but as for those that can stay amused, entertained, and whatnot for hours and hours just watching the weather channel... you got me... but I'll be the first to admit that perhaps I'm missing something... so I'll be looking forward to reading the other responses.

The standard last note on the old blog... PLEASE SUPPORT THE DREAM!

This blog is here to help promote a dream that an entire family shares... that dream is to rescue an old London Double-Decker bus.

Please, if you have a few minutes, take some time to find out more about this bus and the kooky dream by clicking here.

This bus is VERY special to myself and the whole family, and any help any person can lend us would be most gratefully accepted.

If you or someone you know might be interested, there's our tiny banner site, HelpCoverTheBus.Com and a PayPal donation button (see the upper-right hand side of the blog) and, of course, a Cafe Press shop for T-Shirts and shtuff!
(...and who doesn't need some shtuff!)

Please help us make this dream a reality and save a piece of history!

We thank you for your support!

Please Note: We are also hoping for help from a public relations/marketing standpoint... If you might be able to assist OR know someone who might be willing to, please click here and read this entry...

I can understand the second answer - I watch some news programmes for the same reasons! ;-)

Great answer

Hey Rob... Yeah, I admit, there's a few local news cuties that are worthy of a glance! Still, my one friend was almost obsessed with the weather channel being on between 'X' and 'X' because she was on... I admit, I'm not THAT bad about the news-cuties!

Should we go back to concentrating on and letting folks know how things are going with our bus? (Kinda back to the good ol' days?)
