You may or may not have noticed that there is an e-mail link to me directly on the side-bar... well, some have noticed it... and one in particular.
On commenting on my Wednesday post of news snippets from last week, one person was most offended that I had the unmitigated gall to question the brilliance of Ms. Ann Coulter, the media pundit.
The person, to be honest, wrote to me Friday night... and I did respond on Saturday... and asked if I could re-print their comments... I received no answer... so since perhaps a few people think I've been a touch unfair, allow me to post a "non-descript" (as dealing with the e-mail comment) response as to why I said those things... that really, were far less venomous than what I truly feel...
I have to look at Ms. Coulter's dating record... no, not to be salacious, but as to whom she's keeping council with... Bill Maher, Bob Guccione Jr., an "unnamed" Democratic Senate staffer...
Now, consider this...
"Liberals love America like O.J. loved Nicole." is a famed Coulter missive... but she dates 'em anyway.
Liberals "...are always accusing us of repressing their speech. I say let's do it. Let's repress them. ... Frankly, I'm not a big fan of the First Amendment." Hmmm... I 'spose unless you're romantically linked to them?
"A central component of liberal hate speech is to make paranoid accusations based on their own neurotic impulses, such as calling Republicans angry, hate-filled, and mean."... and with such issues, sharing a dinner and drinks after is cool.
Hmmm...
Also, I gotta be honest with you...
I also look at Ann Coulter like I look at rush-hour drivers... if those who are caught in the traffic gridlocks were like they are in their cars 24x7, they'd be arrested... or at least, sent to psychiatric counselling.
The difference is, the drivers get out of their cars, the urge to kill and maim dissipates, and they lead normal lives.
Those saying that Ann Coulter "speaks what's on the mind of most Republicans" (yeah, I know... I said I wasn't going to quote the e-mail,) is like saying the road-raged drivers are really homicidal maniacs who'd snap your neck like a toothpick if political correctness wasn't holding them back.
Quite frankly, if this is true, I'm certainly GLAD it's being held back... I like my neck unbroken.
For this next part, I'm afraid I'm going to have to be a touch unpleasant... in all honesty, if you're like me and have a bad constitution for being upset or sad over things, you may wish to skip the blog for today... I need to punch home a point with a very sad image...
That said...
Another of Coulter's comments...
"My only regret with Timothy McVeigh is he did not go to the New York Times Building."
I can't help but wonder if Ms. Coulter saw the photo below...
How can you say you love your country and make light of a horrible event like the Oklahoma City bombing? How can you look at the photo of a firefighter with the deceased infant... a victim of the blast... and make a statement like that?
You're telling me this wonderfully educated and witty person couldn't make a better comment?
Now, if this was a "one-off", I might be more lenient... but...
About the 911 Widows... "These broads are millionaires, lionized on TV and in articles about them, reveling in their status as celebrities and stalked by grief-arazzis. These self-obsessed women seemed genuinely unaware that 9/11 was an attack on our nation and acted as if the terrorist attacks happened only to them... I've never seen people enjoying their husbands' deaths so much... the Democrat ratpack gals endorsed John Kerry for president... cutting campaign commercials... how do we know their husbands weren't planning to divorce these harpies? Now that their shelf life is dwindling, they'd better hurry up and appear in Playboy."
Please tell me that the VAST majority of American Republicans also find fault with this statement.
I mean, you can dislike their politics, but to take a swipe like this?
This is reminds me very much of a couple of Canadian Conservative party foul-ups... that ended up costing them support.
One was way back (1993) when they released a television commercial mocking then Liberal leader Jean Chretien's face, asking if people trusted it... focusing on the fact that Mr. Chretien has partial paralysis on the left side of his face after a bout of Bell's palsy.
Above is an actual still from the ad in question...
The ad, meant to "mock" the leader, only made Canadians seethe with anger over what amounted to a bully making fun of the disability of another kid in the school yard.
Another wonderful "ad campaign" in Canada was a Conservative press release prior to the election that started off with the headline "Paul Martin Supports Child Pornography". This was MEANT to say that the Conservatives wanted to bring in tougher laws on child pornography if elected... but in the process, seemingly made then Liberal leader and prime minister out to be a child porn dealer. An accusation that didn't sit well with pretty much anyone on either side... except the nitwit that wrote it and now (minority) prime minister and leader of the Tory party, Stephen Harper.
The "remark" was eventually retracted by the Tories (Conservatives), but it did cost them votes... they are a minority government.
Don't even get me started on the "evil reptilian kitten-eater from another planet" comment from ousted Ontario premier Ernie Eves about now super-popular Liberal premier Dalton McGuinty during the last election. It's said that comment, and his unwillingness to apologise for it, cost him the election... I'd say there's about a 15% truth to that...
There are many such situations in politics... all around the world...
...but Ann Coulter is a walking, breathing, "thinking"(?) dynamo of these little bombs... and THINK ABOUT IT...
Look at the picture above... think about grieving widows... think about what she says...
Is she helping the Republican cause? Has her wisdom swung any voters over? Has her verbiage gained any support...?
Or has her outrageous, borderline obscene commentary hurt the cause?
Both Rudy Giuliani and John McCain feel she's hurting the cause... what does that tell you?
I am not an American... and I do not TRULY feel that I am either politically "left-leaning" or "right-leaning"... both have their good points, and their bad points... but I am a human being... and I know a rude, mean, unthinking, uncaring, stupid person who shoots out comments without a thought of who they effect or how they may be received...?
I'm not one for ABSOLUTE political correctness, but even before the term was developed, most people knew that you didn't mock widows, dead infants, or horrible losses of life... it was something else back then... it was called decency... and yet, this wisdom seems to have bypassed Ms. Coulter.
So, all this said, I stick to my point... either she's the worst thing to ever try to help the Republican cause in America (...and with her kind of help, who needs Democrats!)... or she's an amazing and brave plant set to do horrendous damage by the Libertarians.
This is where I must end it... as there's no doubt her prime agenda is selling books and making money on speaking tours... she is a media person... and there is no such thing as bad publicity for those types... so I'm done drawing attention to her.
WHEN she sticks her foot back in her mouth again, if anyone asks, I'm just pointing to this post... 'cuz I'm through with giving any spotlight to someone who is either a horridly stupid woman... or a brilliant sabotage artist working from the almost-inside...
...and I still can't really tell which she is.
I do know this much... if she is a comedian, she ain't funny. If she's a true political pundit, she ain't helping her cause...
That's enough to wish she would go away and shut the hell up.
...and what's scary is I know the leaders of the party she reports to venerate agree with me...
Question: If 90% of the party you support and 100% of the current leadership hopefuls don't like you and want you to clam-up... and your occupation and (supposed) passion are helping these folks... where does that leave you... and more importantly, why?
Ann Coulture on McCarhyism...
"The myth of 'McCarthyism' is the greatest Orwellian fraud of our times. Liberals are fanatical liars, then as now. The portrayal of Sen. Joe McCarthy as a wild-eyed demagogue destroying innocent lives is sheer liberal hobgoblinism. Liberals weren't hiding under the bed during the McCarthy era. They were systematically undermining the nation's ability to defend itself, while waging a bellicose campaign of lies to blacken McCarthy's name."

Above is a flyer for one of the much maligned (according to Coulter) pro-Senator McCarthy organizations.

The Current Time in Toronto is...

Allow me to start with we do not own nor are we selling a bus. Just had to get that out...
This blog was started in April of 2006... during a very bad time for me and my family when money was very tight and life was very hard.
We maintained a happier outlook on life by fantasizing... talking about what we would do when times were better... and as Sue and myself are Anglophiles, England factored greatly into our "plans".
During these bad times, while looking at news items which, at the time included items about London removing their venerable old Routemasters, I came across one photo of an old green bus... and somehow, my whole family adopted it. It became very much "our bus". (Details about "our bus" are available by clicking here.)
Like most of you, I'd heard about the fellow who'd made a million dollars selling tiny ads online... and the fellow who did trades and turned a paper clip into a house... so I thought, since we couldn't make our bus actually into "our bus" (well beyond our means,) I'd try an "online" appeal... to make the focused item of our hopes into a tangible thing in our lives...
More specifically, in a burst of adult/juvenile optimism, I had hoped to show the youngest member of the family, who at the time was still very youthful and impressionable, that dreams really could become reality if you hope and, more importantly, try.
Well, I'm pretty sure you figured it out... we had limited succes in this venture... and the youngest has now reached an age where she is more traditionally "teenaged" cynical than much else about the world, which isn't a dreadful thing... but there's a "good news" portion to this... our personal situation with money is better, life has improved, and some people really liked my rambling here... so, I decided to keep things going... Yes, I will "give up" on asking for help on a bus... and have to give up on even trying as hard to get the bus through online means... and yes, be far more realistic... but I don't mind this "turn" of things as I actually enjoy venting, trying my hand at humour, and generally keeping on online presence outside my usual things.
Thanks to those who were/are "Busly Dream" enthusiasts... I suppose that our buses for now will be single-deck with the letters "TTC" emblazoned on them... but this blog will live as does our dream! (It's just a little quieter on that latter bit...)
