"News of my arrival spread like wildfire, the church bells rang out..."

Great Uncle Ernest

You gotta love someone with a good sense of humour...

Such was my great uncle Ernest who I wrote about at the begining of the month.

He hasn't been with us for many years now, and to be truthful, I never met nor corresponded with the man... but he did take the time to write out all he knew and could remember about that branch (Maternal-Grandfather's) side of the family.

...and it was a joy to read as he "punched it up" with wonderful asides and yes, a touch of humour.

Let me share with you his take on his birth...

The next to arrive was myself, Ernest St Clair, on the 22nd January 1893, at number 19 King Street. News of my arrival spread like wildfire, the church bells rang out. The chorus was taken up from Waterloo to the surrounding villages and towns, then gradually all over the country the church bells rang out. That same year, the Liverpool overhead railway company opened their new electric railway from Dingle to Seaforth Sand, at that time of course the nearest dock were Canada docks. Mark you, the fact that it was Sunday morning, when I was born, might have had something to do with the church bells ringing! doesn't stop there... apparently, there was an ounce of guilt over his coming as he hints it may have caused something to happen that wasn't "a happy", as they say...

There was a sequel, however; news travelled fairly slowly in those days you know and on my eighth birthday, 22nd January 1901, the news of my arrival had reached Windsor Castle and Queen Victoria passed away.

Yes, apparently, my dear great-uncle blamed the news of his birth (eight years past, mind you,) in hastening Queen Victoria's demise.

...and again, my mother wonder's where we "get it" from.

Y'know, when/if the time comes that I must write about my arrival into this plane of existance, I'd have to note the following...

#1: My one sister immediately said, "TAKE IT BACK!" and the other simply said, "But I wanted a sister!"

#2: My parents listed my birth in the paper as "E.P. and John Didier have completed their Centenial Project." as I was born in 1967... Canada's 100th birthday year.

#3: Due to my parents being Anglican/Protestant (maternal) and Catholic (paternal), there was some disagreement of what should "become of me" after birth in relation to a church... neither parent was strongly religious and therefore didn't feel the need to "push" one over the other... although the grandparents felt somewhat strongly... Anyway, while pretty much deciding what to do if anything with me, my old pediatrician (Dr. Martosh) came in to alert my mother there was a Rabbi in the hospital acting as a moil... and well... let's just say it might be appropriate to wish me a Happy Chanukah after all... all done with full regalia, Torah, and drop-of-wine... L'chaim!

...really, I'm still goy, but don't spoil it for others... it's all meshugas and to be kvetching over my spirituality is as needed as a loch in kopp! I'm hopefully just a good agnostic mensch... nothing more.

#4: I am reasonably sure there was a horrible mix-up at the hospital and my REAL name is either Rockefeller, Thompson, Trump, Gates, or Buffett. I used to think it might be Black, but since the lawsuits and freezing of assets... er, I mean... I don't think it's likely.

I do have one thing that makes me KINDA giggle... one possible day WAY in the future, some poor long-lost relation will look me up and find that I was a paranormal investigator... which they will either think is REALLY cool... or will embarass them to no measure.

Either way, it'll make me smile! :)

I was looking on the net, researching my name, and I came upon your comment about my father...very amusing, as is sounds completely like something my father would have done. Thanks for giving me another happy memory of my dear departed dad...cheers David Martosh

Hello David... It's GREAT to hear from you! I still have vivid and fond memories of your dad (he was mine and both sister's doctor when we were young.) I'm sorry to hear of his passing, but I know that he always seemed to be a happy man who, if memory serves, was practising into his twilight years!

I ended up moving back into Willowdale in the early 1990's and was surprised to see his name still on the board in the medical offices at Fairview Mall!

Thanks for stopping by... and I'm glad we both share good memories of your dad.

The Current Time in Toronto is...

One Old Green Bus

This blog was started in April of 2006... its original itent was really twofold. One was to be a "sounding board" for it's author... and the other... well...

At the time we started this, your humble author was unemployed and going through the usual crisis situations that arise from being jobless.

We (my wife, stepdaughter, and I,) used to "amuse" ourselves (read: Take our minds off our troubles) by more-or-less fantasizing as a family about what we'd do when things "turned around". Along this route, we discussed going to England on a vacation... and in that, alighted on "double-decker buses".

We kind of adopted one bus... Regent Low Height 3... as Our Bus... and we used to talk about what we'd do with "our bus" if we got it... from fixing it up to the trips we'd take on it.

Along the way, we became students of the history of this bus which HONESTLY seemd it was truly for us... trouble was, we couldn't afford the bus and weren't in a position to work towards the bus... so we had a couple of options...

Since the bus' position was sketchy (there's a chance she might be sold for scrap or "carved up" in other ways,) we could forget about her and pretend she didn't exist...

...or we could TRY... ask for help... put our dream of owning and saving "One Old Green Bus" into the universe and see what happens...

As of February, 2008, we knew that there was a perspective buyer for the bus (not us, obviously,) and made some difficult decisions... The first was that we wouldn't "beg" for help anymore and give the little money we received to a few different charities both online and off... and the second was simply hope that either we find a corporate sponsor (for an "ad" idea we have, click here to about read that,) or even a patron who see's the value in a silly family's dream...

But, if the bus is about to be purchased by someone who's planning on restoring it and they "get there first", we wish them well and are glad that at least Our One Old Green Bus is in a safe place being looked after.

For now, though, we are still hoping WE might be the ones to get our One Old Green Bus and see a family dream come true...

Regardless, this blog WILL continue... and we will still "go for" a bus of our own... but this blog will ALWAYS be dedicated to our own One Old Green Bus.
