Update 17:57 EST We'd like to thank Andrea at Ghost Stories for being a PERFECT Halloween renter... but it's time for us to find... ANOTHER RENTER! Please, click here if you'd like to rent with The Old Green Bus Blog here... and have Sue do a boffo job of pimpin' your blog!
Meet the Professor... real name was James Hughes from Lancashire. Apparently, he was a major entertainer in his day... and the inventor of the bicycle-cab.
I only found out about him (and saw this flyer) Saturday last.
His son, James Jr., was my grandfather.
My grand-uncle also had a "storied" past...
(You can click the pictures above to see the whole articles/flyers.)
My Biggus Sissus (eldest sister) is the family geneologist and sent this on to me... and Sue, almost more than myself, is now pouring over literally hundreds of pages of information... some dating back to the mid-1400's!
The big things that I've discovered are...
- My family have been in North America since 1604 (in New Amsterdam).
- My family (my direct blood) stayed loyal to England and the crown during the revolution and settled in Prince Edward County, Owen Sound, and The Niagara Area... one of which building the first framed home in Sophiasburgh.
- We trace directly back to the Carlisle (and de Carlisle) family in Scotland/North England.
There's whackloads more... plenty of pioneering spirit, engineering and scientific stuff, even some peerage for good measure.
I always knew there was "something" about my family... after all, even recently I felt we were somewhat "storied"...
My Grandpere (father's side) was head (executive) chef of the Royal York hotel for many years and cooked for Her Majesty on several occasions. He also served aboard the HMCS Haida (formerly dry-docked at Ontario Place) during the time HMCS Athabaska tragedy. (In fact, the only time I ever saw him get weepy other than at my father's funeral, was when talking about that terrible event.)
My late Uncle Frank (maternal) was an architect... who designed the suspended walkways at Ontario Place as well as some other landmarks in and around Toronto and Southern Ontario. (Most notably to older Torontonians, the "castle-like" entrance to The Hudson's Bay store at Fairview Mall... before they re-built the whole place.)
My Uncle Gord (paternal) was a Toronto Fire Captain... and a hockey player of some note in his youth.
My Great Grandfather on my Paternal Grandmother's side was Toronto's first and only street gas-lamp lighter... and a painter who painted the words "Gooderham and Worts" on the brick building (once VERY visible from The Gardiner Expressway... but now hidden behind an advertising for condos...) in what is now called "The Distillery District" in Toronto... interestingly enough, he was illiterate and "copied" the letters from a piece of paper.

...anyway, Sue's been REALLY pouring over Biggus Sissus' notes as Sue's a historian (like me) but also she's a genealogist.
It's VERY cool to know that members of both my paternal and maternal family have been in North America since the late 1600's... and in Ontario since the mid-1700's... but weirdly enough, the English bits (and Scots) of both sides were within spitting distance of each other "in the old country) in Cumbria and Lancashire for many generations before coming together here in Canada last century.
The one thing we've found seems to be a family of industrious, inventive, showy, proud, verbose, adventuring people that always seem to make sure that they made some impact around them in society.
...but we both really like "The Professor"... and his "enchanted casket" and "funny folk".
...and my mother STILL wonders where we "get it from"! ![]()
The standard last note on the old blog... PLEASE SUPPORT THE DREAM!
This blog is here to help promote a dream that an entire family shares... that dream is to rescue an old London Double-Decker bus.
Please, if you have a few minutes, take some time to find out more about this bus and the kooky dream by clicking here.
This bus is VERY special to myself and the whole family, and any help any person can lend us would be most gratefully accepted.
If you or someone you know might be interested, there's our pixel ad site, HelpCoverTheBus.Com and a PayPal donation button (see the upper-right hand side of the blog) and, of course, a Cafe Press shop for T-Shirts and shtuff!
(...and who doesn't need some shtuff!)
Please help us make this dream a reality and save a piece of history!
We thank you for your support!
Please Note: We are also hoping for help from a public relations/marketing standpoint... If you might be able to assist OR know someone who might be willing to, please click here and read this entry...

Due to a LARGE amount of projects which are mostly "offline", I will only be "blogging" Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays unless something REALLY begs me to blog about it.
Thanks for your understanding in this and be back to "full time blogging mode" come January 7th!

Allow me to start with we do not own nor are we selling a bus. Just had to get that out...
This blog was started in April of 2006... during a very bad time for me and my family when money was very tight and life was very hard.
We maintained a happier outlook on life by fantasizing... talking about what we would do when times were better... and as Sue and myself are Anglophiles, England factored greatly into our "plans".
During these bad times, while looking at news items which, at the time included items about London removing their venerable old Routemasters, I came across one photo of an old green bus... and somehow, my whole family adopted it. It became very much "our bus". (Details about "our bus" are available by clicking here.)
Like most of you, I'd heard about the fellow who'd made a million dollars selling tiny ads online... and the fellow who did trades and turned a paper clip into a house... so I thought, since we couldn't make our bus actually into "our bus" (well beyond our means,) I'd try an "online" appeal... to make the focused item of our hopes into a tangible thing in our lives...
More specifically, in a burst of adult/juvenile optimism, I had hoped to show the youngest member of the family, who at the time was still very youthful and impressionable, that dreams really could become reality if you hope and, more importantly, try.
Well, I'm pretty sure you figured it out... we had limited succes in this venture... and the youngest has now reached an age where she is more traditionally "teenaged" cynical than much else about the world, which isn't a dreadful thing... but there's a "good news" portion to this... our personal situation with money is better, life has improved, and some people really liked my rambling here... so, I decided to keep things going... Yes, I will "give up" on asking for help on a bus... and have to give up on even trying as hard to get the bus through online means... and yes, be far more realistic... but I don't mind this "turn" of things as I actually enjoy venting, trying my hand at humour, and generally keeping on online presence outside my usual things.
Thanks to those who were/are "Busly Dream" enthusiasts... I suppose that our buses for now will be single-deck with the letters "TTC" emblazoned on them... but this blog will live as does our dream! (It's just a little quieter on that latter bit...)
