My definition of the words "Let Down"...

In terms of being self deluded and then let down, Thursday last week tops my days.

Regent Low Height 3

You see, ever since setting up this site and the blog, we've always thought/hoped that with the family dream of rescuing the old bus, someone out there online or who knows would help us out... Somewhere, out there, some businessperson would say, "Hey! That advertising potential is perfect and I'll help out this family too!" or someone with enough money who appreciates our work/efforts either here or with our paranormal work or possibly just someone who appreciates the historical aspect of saving the old bus would help us out... therefore, it's always been a "phone call" or "e-mail" away... unless our lottery luck changed!

Well, it's been almost a year and our luck has not been too good.

That said, Sue sent me an e-mail on Thursday afternoon...

Call Mr. (blank) from New York from the website (blank) about the bus. He called and wants to speak to you about it.

I'm not going to lie... 99% of me said, "Could it be? Perhaps this is it? Will the dream come true?" at the same time the "other voice in my head" was saying, "Dude, you've been here before... don't hold your breath... it's probably another person that wants you to pay and get the glory for them..."

Money Man

...but none-the-less, I was optimistic as always... I was thinking, "Okay, assuming this is a done deal now, who do I contact? How do I set up the sale of the bus? How do I nail down absolute ownership to someone in Santa Rosa or wherever? What were my contacts for shipping from California to Toronto? How long will it take to get everything ready for storage in Toronto?"

I put in my last few hours at work... on pins and needles...

Was Mr. (blank) the answer to our prayers? If so, was this fellow an internet mogul of the better dot-com days? Perhaps he's one of the new entrepreneurs who wants the advertising?

Little by little, I was more and more anticipating the call... and working away quietly deep in my thoughts and hopes at the office...

Finally, it was time to head for home...

Once there, I didn't want to get overly excited... I even waited until after 6pm to call Mr. (blank) to find out what, if any news he had for us or the bus...

I called and Mr. (blank)'s company and he, himself, was the one who picked up the phone... and promptly tried to sell me on using "Pop-Under" ads on the website and blog.

Argh!

No mention of the dream. No mention of the website. Just effectively a sales pitch... and not a terribly "lucrative" one for this site, the blog, or anything.

...besides, I would *NEVER* do "Pop-Unders"... I hate them and regardless of the coin would NEVER subject my readers to them.

So, once again, big high and thinking Our Dream Has Come True only to be dropped from that great height.

By this point, you'd assume my personal cynicism would have kicked in with a vengeance... but apparently it hasn't... and who knows... maybe I shouldn't completely give up on my cock-eyed optimism...

I know that even Sue looked sad when I told her how the call went... luckily, my cynicism (based on past experience) was good enough that we didn't share the initial call with our little one who would have taken it much worse than we did.

Another day, another chance... perhaps one day we’ll be able to tell you about the dream coming true... but right now, not yet...

The only thing we can do is keep hoping that somewhere, out in the ether of the internet or wherever, someone will help us... and most importantly, we gotta keep dreaming.

The standard last note on the old blog... PLEASE SUPPORT THE DREAM!

This blog is here to help promote a dream that an entire family shares... that dream is to rescue an old London Double-Decker bus.

Please, if you have a few minutes, take some time to find out more about this bus and the kooky dream by clicking here.

This bus is VERY special to myself and the whole family, and any help any person can lend us would be most gratefully accepted.

If you or someone you know might be interested, there's our pixel ad site, HelpCoverTheBus.Com and a PayPal donation button (see the upper-right hand side of the blog) and, of course, a Cafe Press shop for T-Shirts and shtuff!
(...and who doesn't need some shtuff!)

Please help us make this dream a reality and save a piece of history!

We thank you for your support!

Please Note: We are also hoping for help from a public relations/marketing standpoint... If you might be able to assist OR know someone who might be willing to, please click here and read this entry...

Dude!!!!!! That's agonizing!! I know how you feel - I do that with potential clients - some drops me a line with little actual info and inside I start seeing the next nike online campaign and it winds up being someone either trying to sell something or wanting something for very very little!

Thanks Lee... Well, like you, we're used to it to a degree... it's only happened once before when a "new internet" company sent me an e-mail "expressing interest" in us getting the bus... We were SOOOOO excited... and when I called, they more-or-less said, "When you get it, we'd like to take shots of you with the bus for the site..." and I replied, "Great, so when and how do you want to proceed?"

After some MAJOR confusion, it ended up they wanted me (with no help) to buy the bus, ship it, and effectively the only thing THEY wanted to do was make a "news story" out of it for their website... nothing else, no help from them for anything... nothing.

Typical media thing... they ALL seem to think EVERYONE wants to be on TV or have their "name in lights" or whatever... and we (my family and me) really don't. The work and the idea of the dream is important... we aren't.

In the case I mentioned above, however, they effectively ASSUMED (in other words, they didn't read...) that we had the $20k and we "needed" publicity (Why they assumed this? I have no idea...) and were JUST WAITING for them to make us an advertising feature for their website... with no benefit to us except that "we" would have our pictures on their webpage! (Wheee.)

Yes, we could be ADVERTISING STARS on their website... with no benefit to ourselves other than being "STARS"!

Ugh.

NEVER let the dream die...I can only imagine the agony of disappointment, but this is such a cool thing you are doing; I don't have enough money to help you out, but you're on my list should something change. :-)

Peace out,
K.

Hey ariadneK... Don't worry... the dream isn't dead... but I'd be lying if I didn't say that moments like these that do add to the general cynicism... the kind of thing that makes me go, "Y'know... this is kind of stupid... there's better things to spend energy on and for people to even think about giving money towards..."... but then my little one or Sue talk to me and I do realise the importance to us... and possibly as a sort-of emblem to others not to allow cynicism to kill a dream.

...and that's what it is, y'know... the physical embodiment of a dream... something that kept us sane and together... and to bail on it would be silly.

Perhaps, one day, we'll write about how people should NEVER abandon their dreams as ours came true... and words like your's do make that easier to believe and continue working towards.

Thanks for the support and kind words.

One Old Green Bus

Allow me to start with we do not own nor are we selling a bus. Just had to get that out...

This blog was started in April of 2006... during a very bad time for me and my family when money was very tight and life was very hard.

We maintained a happier outlook on life by fantasizing... talking about what we would do when times were better... and as Sue and myself are Anglophiles, England factored greatly into our "plans".

During these bad times, while looking at news items which, at the time included items about London removing their venerable old Routemasters, I came across one photo of an old green bus... and somehow, my whole family adopted it. It became very much "our bus". (Details about "our bus" are available by clicking here.)

Like most of you, I'd heard about the fellow who'd made a million dollars selling tiny ads online... and the fellow who did trades and turned a paper clip into a house... so I thought, since we couldn't make our bus actually into "our bus" (well beyond our means,) I'd try an "online" appeal... to make the focused item of our hopes into a tangible thing in our lives...

More specifically, in a burst of adult/juvenile optimism, I had hoped to show the youngest member of the family, who at the time was still very youthful and impressionable, that dreams really could become reality if you hope and, more importantly, try.

Well, I'm pretty sure you figured it out... we had limited succes in this venture... and the youngest has now reached an age where she is more traditionally "teenaged" cynical than much else about the world, which isn't a dreadful thing... but there's a "good news" portion to this... our personal situation with money is better, life has improved, and some people really liked my rambling here... so, I decided to keep things going... Yes, I will "give up" on asking for help on a bus... and have to give up on even trying as hard to get the bus through online means... and yes, be far more realistic... but I don't mind this "turn" of things as I actually enjoy venting, trying my hand at humour, and generally keeping on online presence outside my usual things.

Thanks to those who were/are "Busly Dream" enthusiasts... I suppose that our buses for now will be single-deck with the letters "TTC" emblazoned on them... but this blog will live as does our dream! (It's just a little quieter on that latter bit...)
