Quick Question to the Masses: What would you do with a Christmas gift request like this one?

On occasion, I often wonder if my wife TRULY knew what she was getting into with me...

Now, the double-decker bus has become a dream of the family, but this is not what I asked for as a Christmas gift from her... mostly because I'm reasonably sure that she doesn't have $20,000.00 for Christmas gifts... at least, not this year.

Nope, her significant other has asked for...

...a weapon.

Pattern 1796 Heavy Cavalry Sword

A Pattern 1796 Heavy Cavalry Sword. Yup... I want this sword.

Granted, I want it... but I would hope to have Sue engrave something on the blade for me...

Oh, if you're a new reader... do remember I'm a War of 1812 re-enactor... but it's not like I'd EVER get to use this sword with those events... to be honest, I ain't an officer (I WORK FOR MY MONEY!) and they're pretty strict about "edged weapons" on the field.

That said, I told Sue if not 1796 Heavy Cavalry Sword, I'd be thrilled to get...

1803 Pattern British Infantry Sabre

...an 1803 Pattern British Infantry Sabre.

C'mon now... it's purdy...

To be honest, I'd prefer this for my "special gift", but there's just SOMETHING about the Heavy Cavalry that I like... but this is the one I want for Christmas...

Of course, there is...

1796 Pattern British Infantry Sword

The 1796 Pattern British Infantry Sword... which is nice... but the two above are eventual "musts".

Granted, I won't really be able to go back in the field until I get my firearm back...

Baker Rifle

*Sigh*... I used to own the above... a Baker Rifle... To be honest, much as my commanding officer (Norfolk Militia) would KILL me for getting the short Baker, I've found providence of them being in Upper Canada in 1813... meaning it IS accurate to the period... but they'd prefer me to have...

Brown Bess

The Short Land Pattern "Brown Bess" musket.

This is really the "staple" weapon for British re-enactors... but I do miss my Baker... stupid poverty forcing me to sell it!

I mean, check out the Baker Bayonet!

Baker Rifle Sword Bayonet

A mini-sword!

...and yes, I had the rifle, the bayonet, and the appropriate slings.

To be honest, however, I think I managed to fire exactly five cartridges with it before being forced to sell the whole thing. Perhaps this is why I miss it so much.

Hey, it's not like Sue isn't completely into this... she's "kitted out" as a red-coat soldier!

...to be honest, though, she has a thing about wanting to play a femal guerilla... she has an empire dress and has "hinted" that she'd like... well...

Naval Pistol

...or...

Light Dragoon Pistol

Yup, she wants to be "armed"... sometimes, I don't know if that's such a good idea... even if it is a flintlock pistol.

In some cases, if the shot didn't carry, hit the target, or more likely, she had a misfire, she's the type that would decide "hand-to-hand" would be fine...

...do I want to unleash this on one of the fields?

Well, for myself, one day I hope to own the Pattern 1796 Heavy Cavalry Sword, the 1803 Pattern British Infantry Sabre, a Baker Rifle with bayonet, and out of necessity, a Brown Bess.

...but for now, the 1803 sabre is the one I want ASAP...

(HINT! HINT! FOR DECEMBER 25TH, SUE!!!)

Sue, of course, will eventually have one (or more) of her pistols... so don't tick her off! After all, with a misfire rate of about 70%, accuracy only assured at about ten yards maybe, and taking about twenty or thirty seconds to load... she'd be moderately possibly dangerous... after all, when the damned thing doesn't work, she'll probably toss that little bugger right at your noggin and they're heavy!

*Sigh* I need to get back into the field... My swash is in desperate need of buckling!

Did I mention that I hope Sue noted the subtle, gentle hint about the 1803 Pattern British Infantry Sabre as a Christmas gift idea?

...just keepin' it subtle.

Oh, and here's a link to where it can be purchased...

Hello!

Check out loyalist arms.....my bess kit from them is AWESOME!!

The muskets I have bought from military heritage ALL required major work to shoot reliably and look good,AND THEY ARE NOT REALLY INTO CUSTOMER SERVICE......

Loyalist arms are a class act!

anyhow cheers!

Hey Robert! Yes, I've heard VERY good things about Loyalist Arms... when the time comes to get the Bess (which must come before replacing my Baker), I'll probably be hitting up the chaps in IMUC for what might be available gently used... then Loyalist Arms for sure... although, if I can find a pre-2004 Pedersoli...

As for the Baker, I'd love to go to Loyalist... but expense prevents it. My Baker was a DiscGen special from India and, to be honest, despite being looked after by Robin Upton and whatnot, was nothing but issues for me... bad dogget screw, frizzen needing hardening, poor boring... still, the Baker would be for fun and show... the Bess for actual field duties!

Granted, I'll be happy with the DiscGen for the sabre (HINT HINT SUE! CHRISTMAS IS COMING!!!)

Thanks again!

Oh, and remember... don't be dissin' the DiscGen! The General hisself may find out! :)

One Old Green Bus

Allow me to start with we do not own nor are we selling a bus. Just had to get that out...

This blog was started in April of 2006... during a very bad time for me and my family when money was very tight and life was very hard.

We maintained a happier outlook on life by fantasizing... talking about what we would do when times were better... and as Sue and myself are Anglophiles, England factored greatly into our "plans".

During these bad times, while looking at news items which, at the time included items about London removing their venerable old Routemasters, I came across one photo of an old green bus... and somehow, my whole family adopted it. It became very much "our bus". (Details about "our bus" are available by clicking here.)

Like most of you, I'd heard about the fellow who'd made a million dollars selling tiny ads online... and the fellow who did trades and turned a paper clip into a house... so I thought, since we couldn't make our bus actually into "our bus" (well beyond our means,) I'd try an "online" appeal... to make the focused item of our hopes into a tangible thing in our lives...

More specifically, in a burst of adult/juvenile optimism, I had hoped to show the youngest member of the family, who at the time was still very youthful and impressionable, that dreams really could become reality if you hope and, more importantly, try.

Well, I'm pretty sure you figured it out... we had limited succes in this venture... and the youngest has now reached an age where she is more traditionally "teenaged" cynical than much else about the world, which isn't a dreadful thing... but there's a "good news" portion to this... our personal situation with money is better, life has improved, and some people really liked my rambling here... so, I decided to keep things going... Yes, I will "give up" on asking for help on a bus... and have to give up on even trying as hard to get the bus through online means... and yes, be far more realistic... but I don't mind this "turn" of things as I actually enjoy venting, trying my hand at humour, and generally keeping on online presence outside my usual things.

Thanks to those who were/are "Busly Dream" enthusiasts... I suppose that our buses for now will be single-deck with the letters "TTC" emblazoned on them... but this blog will live as does our dream! (It's just a little quieter on that latter bit...)
