Fly-By Thoughts for the Day...

I'm still battling my cold... which has thoughtfully lodged itself into my chest and has become bronchitis... on this note, I'm just gonna dash off a couple of quick notes, and then do what I've spent my whole long weekend doing... sleeping...

Thank you, North Korea and Kim Jong-il!

Fun! Fun! Fun!

Y'know, I spent my entire childhood and most of my teenaged years living under the cold war with the only thing that I knew of that was keeping me from becoming a quick bit of vapour and a salt outline was "mutually assured destruction"... and there I was, thinking that now the "super powers" were trying to get along, the only threat I had to me and my family was terrorist threats.

Well, you sure proved us wrong!

Granted, in Toronto at the moment, we don't have too much to fear... but Japan must be nervous.

Weird, isn't it... Japan was the only country to suffer an atomic strike in hostility at the end of WWII... and now they're at ground zero again.

Anyway, my thanks go out to those whacky leaders of North Korea and to Kim Jong-il in particular! It's nice to know that my kids will have the same fears and paranoya as we did... well, accept unlike the former Soviets, I really, REALLY don't trust you guys.

Speaking of all this, it reminds me that "punk" in some ways was an anti-nuke thing. Yup, some folks believed that the punk "look" was an anti-war statement of sorts... and anti-cold war statement, if you will.

Y'know, the whole mutant/survivalist/death thing?

Anyway, in the lengthy post I did (and deleted), I whined about "activism" within the "punk" movements (nothing made me chuckle harder than the "Anarchists Conventions" that were put together... Who headed these up, d'you suppose? Who organised the anarchists?) and how "goths" had to re-adopt new ones when the Soviet Union collapsed... and how the masses of them chose animal rights. Most of this was pre-PETA and mostly based on the lyrics and whatnot of the goth-industrial band Skinny Puppy.

Now, DON'T GET ME WRONG HERE... I'm dead against cosmetic and "consumer product" testing on animals... I believe in this day and age it's wrong to do that.

I also firmly believe that medical and scientific studies should be under tight controls... but... hate me if you must... I do believe that until we have an alternative, medicinal arts do have to progress in any way they can and lives will be saved (ultimately) through those ways.

BUT HERE'S THE THING...

Let me tell you of two people... and why one is my "animal rights hero" and the other is not.

Person A is an animal rights activist. They throw red paint at woman wearing furs, picket outside labs, break windows at KFC, threaten the students and lab workers at medical companies, and they either have or would like to blow up the occasional lab as well.

Person B is a researcher and lab worker in Japan who, in 1993, discovered a way to grow rabbit eye cultures through a sort-of cloning process. In doing so, they saved thousands of rabbits as one "eye" could spawn thousands of cultures to test on.

Okay, who do you think did more for animals?

It's cool to say that "X" must be STOPPED and must be DISCONTINUED... but then ensure there's a process or something involved to substitute for what you're removing.

Animal cruelty makes me ill... but I also understand, much as I do wish I could be "totally against it", that medical and scientific testing must continue.

...and one HAS to wonder... if the money that now funds PETA went into funding those like the researcher in Japan, might we make more progress in all directions?

Just a thought...

Oh, and before anyone asks, yes, I'm an omnivore... and yes, I like real leather.

I know, I'm scum... but perhaps the next time I'm ill, we can go through that too. :)

The Name Game Continues!

No Name Yet

ARRGH!

It's still narrowed to three... Kipling, Loki, Satchmo...

...AND HE'S COMING HOME THURSDAY EVENING!!!

Okay, folks... the REAL holdout is a ten-year-old... there's nothing more capricious or mercurial than a pre-adolescent trying to choose her new dog's name.

Space! The Final Frontier!

PUPPY UPDATE!!!! After much gnashing of teeth and whatnot, everyone has agreed...

He is... KIPLING!

Now, this is NOT (sadly) for Kipling, Sasketchewan (where Kyle MacDonald of One Red Paperclip fame is now in,) or the author Rudyard Kipling, but for the subway stop I had to take to see him for the first time.

Should we go back to concentrating on and letting folks know how things are going with our bus? (Kinda back to the good ol' days?)
