Quick Missives on a Wednesday Morning...

Ahhh... one of my infamous "double post" days... but I had to get some of this out in pixels...

Surgery

Penis Woes...

In today's 24hrs newspaper, a freebie they give out here in Toronto, there was the following quick article...

Penis Woes Surgeons in China who said they performed the first successful penis transplant had to remove the donated organ because of the severe psychological problems it caused the to the recipient and his wife. The 44-year old man's penis had been damaged in a traumatic accident.
- 24 hours news service

Okay, let's examine this...

#1: "Traumatic Accident"... I think this goes without saying. Any accident that results in even considering having to replace damaged... um... well... private bits would have to be considered traumatic at best, I believe... this seems like kinda a gimme.

#2: Do we want to know what kind of accident it was? I have visions... and they aren't too nice... about what might cause massive damage to one's John Thomas and yet (apparently) leave the rest of your organs in decent enough shape to consider this operation.

#3: "Severe Psychological Problems" is an interesting thing to consider... "Doing it" with someone else's unit... having a (more likely than not) dead man's package attached to yourself and... well...

Would this be considered cheating of a sort?

Either way, I'm still kinda stuck on the "Traumatic Accident" line...

IBM PC

An Open Letter To My New Friend at IBM...

No, this isn't a "computer gripe" or any other office equipment complaint... in my office tower (where I work,) IBM (or "It's Better Manually",) has offices on a couple of floors... and although I know they can "swipe" their "security card" to gain access to their floors through the stairs, they INSIST on taking the elevator up and down ONE SINGLE FLOOR AT A TIME... thus slowing down the progress of others.

This morning, one "employee" decided not only to use the elevator to go down one lousy floor, but HELD THE DOOR OPEN when she was getting in to finish a conversation... and then held it open on her one floor while she finished reading a news item on the little television monitors they have in our elevators... meaning that she made the journey of ONE WHOLE FLOOR of a building in about seven minutes... including getting frustrated at the elevator's alarm for being held open too long... and didn't think to apologise to the two people waiting "patiently" to get to their destination.

I think I mentioned it once here before that one of my favourite "work moments" was watching a woman take the elevator up a single floor... and then, later that day, I saw her with her gym bag and gear heading to work out... think about that...

So, to this IBM (or "I Bought Macintosh") employee... you're my second FOAD post... because, dear God woman, that was unnecessary, uncalled for, and just genuinely inconsiderate.

May your current desktop system be replace with a PS/2 model 25!

(To an old-tyme IBM employee, this is a frightening thought!)

Bliss!

There! I feel better already! Those two items were burning brain cells and I needed to get them out...

Oh, don't forget, the post below (about BlogMad credits and "cars") is new also... please give a read if you have time!

The standard last note on the old blog... PLEASE SUPPORT THE DREAM!

This blog is here to help promote a dream that an entire family shares... that dream is to rescue an old London Double-Decker bus.

RLH 3

Please, if you have a few minutes, take some time to find out more about this bus and the kooky dream by clicking here.

This bus is VERY special to myself and the whole family, and any help any person can lend us would be most gratefully accepted.

If you or someone you know might be interested, there's our pixel ad site, HelpCoverTheBus.Com and a PayPal donation button (see the upper-right hand side of the blog) and, of course, a Cafe Press shop for T-Shirts and shtuff!
(...and who doesn't need some shtuff!)

Please help us make this dream a reality and save a piece of history!

We thank you for your support!

Please Note: We are also hoping for help from a public relations/marketing standpoint... If you might be able to assist OR know someone who might be willing to, please click here and read this entry...

WHAT!?!?! THE BUS GUY (and his wife) DON'T OWN A CAR!?!?!

Quick Update: 07:38 EDT If you read this blog regularly through BlogMad, please note... the current "slurping" of credits (usually over a hundred per day) have made it impossible to keep up... so I'm going to be letting them slide... basically, I'll grab credits as I can... but chances are, I'll run out more often than not... So, if you're one of those rare birds that enjoys this blog and only views it through BlogMad and you notice I've dropped from rotation now and again... this is why.

Nothing against the fine folks at BlogMad, just that I have precious little time to surf and build credits!

WHAT!?!?! THE BUS GUY (and his wife) DON'T OWN A CAR!?!?!

General Lee

It's true! It's true!

I have lived all my life in "The Big City"... and due to this, I've never needed one. Public transit has always been my mode of travel.

Perhaps that's where the love of buses comes from...

Nah... if anything, our beloved Toronto Transit Commision's buses would turn most people off buses for life!!!

Kidding... to a degree...

The buses are fine, the drivers are great... but they are not the most expeditious way to travel... and other passengers can be... well... troublesome... but that's another blog entry.

...and it's the greener way to go for the environment... but that too is another blog entry...

...anyway...

It amazes me how many people are literally STUNNED that I've never held a driver's license for a car (I have had a motorcycle license for a while... I owned a Vespa P-200E Scooter in high school... pretty much like the one below...) and, stranger yet, that I don't own a car... and never have.

Vespa P-200E

My favourite moment came once from the captain of one of my re-enactment groups... We were in a car and he asked, "So, when are you getting your license back?"

I was kind of taken aback...

"I've never lost it." I explained, "I've always lived in Toronto and haven't really ever needed one."

He had "assumed" I had lost my license in some "nasty incident"... after all, how many (almost) forty-year olds do you know who don't drive?

Well, now you know one... or at least, one more.

He didn't know any... until then...

Munster Mobiles

Here's a weird one... Last night, my barber (who's shop is literally across the street) buzzed up to my apartment... he needed a "boost" for his dead battery.

It took me about ten minutes to convey to him that no, I don't own a car and therefore, no, I don't have jumper cables.

...and don't get me started about how often I'm asked for my "driver's license" as identification... and the odd looks I get when I report back, "I don't own one."

The Love Bug

You see, here's the dilemma...

As much as getting my license and owning a car would be GREAT, there's some pretty rough drawbacks for us...

#1: Parking We live more-or-less close to downtown. Parking is at a PREMIUM and a parking spot around here (even outdoors) runs around a minimum of $200 per month. Quite the expense!

#2: Insurance Since neither Sue nor I have driven with a full license before, (only learner's permits,) we were told to expect to pay about $400 or more per month for insurance.

#3: Gas Prices Although lately falling, it's still about a buck-a-litre here...

Yellow Rolls Royce

Now, a TTC "pass" is all of $100.00 per adult per month... and we don't have insurance, parking, or gas to worry about...

So therefore, even with a sudden "injection of money", I'm unlikely to say, "Hey! Let's get a car!"

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang

Spacer

So, those faithful readers who are regulars... you may be asking yourself... Then Why The Heck Do You Guys Want This Bus???

Well, first of all, I would get my license for it... heck, I have even been studying the "Bus Driver's Handbook" from the Ontario Ministry of Transportation... just in case... and considering the work that WOULD need to be done on it, it'll be sitting in my wallet for a long while waiting for repairs to be completed.

Secondly, we've already organized storage for the bus... (Thankfully, we have our choice of THREE locations to store her and fix her in...) therefore parking isn't an issue.

Thirdly, being a bus, it's not like we're planning on driving it to the office Monday through Friday... it would be conserved for weekends only... and even then, not every weekend...

Fourthly, believe it or not, due to our "usage", the age of the bus, and our ages, insurance on it should be less than a car!!! (I've spoken to three brokers and, provided we get the appropriate licenses AND "stay out of trouble" for a year, we should get a deal!)

...and lastly and most importantly, we all have a wee love affair with good ol' RLH 3 and don't wish to see her scrapped or carved up.

So, there you have it...

No, I don't own a car... I don't have a license (yet)... and I'm in no rush... unless, of course, by some miracle, we get the funds we need for good ol' RLH 3... and we think she's worth it!

...but oddly enough, a Buick Skylark isn't for us. :)

...nothing against Skylarks, of course!

...although I bet I'm gonna hear from Sue she want's the Munster Mobiles, Chitty-Chitty-Bang-Bang, and The Yellow Rolls Royce after seeing the above photos! :)

Spacer

Oh, as a kid... I did have a "dream car" and you can thank James Bond for that one too...

No, not the Aston Martin... although they were all damned fine cars!

It was a Lotus Esprit...

Lotus Esprit

The first Bond film I saw in the theatre was Moonraker which featured a Lotus Esprit... and as a mere lad of only twelve, I was smitten... I was massively in love with the car... and it's a love that holds out to this day...

On the rare occasion I see one, I kind of have a "moment", if you will... like being young again and seeing that girl you had a crush on in high school...

So, I guess if I ever win a BIG lottery or something, it'll be RLH 3 and a Lotus Esprit...

*Sigh!*

Sure, the Lotus does not have the same affect as seeing a fine double-decker... but it's VERY close! :)

Ahhh... youth.
