Blame music, video games, clothing... anything...

I will not make light out of what happened in Montreal yesterday.

Two people are dead... one victim... and the killer... one didn't deserve to die... the other... that's up to your interpretation of events.

...either way, a young woman is dead who, yesterday morning, just wanted to be a good student.

Cut to this morning, I was screamed at via the radio about this all being the fault of "goth" culture... that video games and music "made him do it".

Newsflash Folks! Millions and millions of kids listen to music that many people find "questionable". Millions and millions of kids play video games... and yet, millions and millions of kids will not pick up a gun. Will not decide that violence is a good option. Will not feel the need to cause mayhem on that level...

The question is NOT who to blame... or even how to prevent these things from happening as a coverall... (there is no coverall cure for this sort of thing...) the question is why this event happened (again) and why this individual bucked the trend of those millions and millions and thought that his actions were appropriate, necessary, and worth acting out.

I don't know any "kids" over the age of nine who think their PS/2 or GameCube is a "documentary". As a former (though denied) "goth", I can tell you that NONE of my old friends, not even the truly misguided who believed in some whacky stuff, ever was outwardly violent... most of them, at worst, were a touch self-destructive... they thought/think of themselves as "creative" and tend to the artistic...

As a rule, reading Anne Rice by candlelight while listening to depressive music MIGHT make the average person homicidal, it tended to take them in a different direction.

Although this was terrible... now is not the time for blame... or even worry... the "gunman" is dead. There's no immediate threat by him (lest you accept possible copycats). Now is the time to mourn his victim and care for those who were hurt.

...but being human, this morning, I was told how "goths" are all latent killers... How video games were churning out violent offenders...

Bullcrud.

I'd remind this radio personality that Elvis made us all worship "African Devils". How The Beatles made everyone do drugs and drop out. How Disco turned everyone into sex crazed maniacs. How Heavy Metal made us bite the heads off defenceless animals and worship Satan...

...aside from music, don't even get me started on what comic books, Dungeons and Dragons, and what a plethora of other pop-culture goodies would do to us!

...all these things were said... and yet, the vast majority who listened to this music and, as kids, adopted these "styles" in clothing and whatnot managed NOT to do what was "predestined" because of that evil culture they enjoyed so much.

Also, the idiot who killed that woman and hurt the others was twenty-five years old... hardly a kid.

Need a real sad laugh? The radio announcer mentioned that this fellow was wearing a "Kane Mask"... "Kane" being the gimmick of wrestler Glen Jacobs. So guess what? Wrestling got blamed too... actually, it didn't...

He blamed the fact that Jacobs had starred in a horror movie...

So, horror movies are to blame.

You see, this fellow surmised that since this fellow was dressed all in black, was a member of a "funky" web group, and wore a mask that was from a wrestler... He was a goth, lead to violence by the music he listened to, the company he kept, the video games he played, the horror movies he watched..." and, yet again, this isn't born out statistically... but he needed to "blame" someone or something.

...and his flavour of journalism needs to sell fear... fear of people's own children.

"You're kid plays that devil music? Your kid watches horror movies or wrestling? Your kid plays video games? Well then, you have a MURDERER in your midst!"

Poppycock.

Here, allow me as an almost forty-year old man who had a "questionable" teenage-hood - that lasted into his twenties - give his two-cents worth from my personal experience...

If your kid is stockpiling weapons, if your kid denotes that violent behaviour in the real world is acceptable, if your kid openly espouses that "some people" need to die... THEN you have a problem...

How to combat this?

Teach empathy. Teach respect for life. Teach compassion.

Those are the THREE most important things a kid can know...

...and no, having empathy, respect, and compassion is NOT weakness... one can learn these things without giving up their own persona or pride...

Anyway, it doesn't matter... I think of the victims... all of them... the poor woman and the folks who were wounded.

There will be time to find the "reasons" later... the dead criminal isn't going anywhere.

So please, if anything recently has made you think that you should take away your kid's video games, delete their MP3s, and force them into a fashion that's less "issuey"... why not talk to them about their views on life... and the sacred-ness of it.

Something to think about... you can't tell someone to be good to all people... and then espouse turning a part of the world into a "sheet of glass". You need to explain, teach, and learn that the ONLY time we should be violent or wish violence is to someone who, without action, will take other's lives or harm them without thought, compassion, or empathy... and that is not a coverall with some group.

Those who do not respect human life do not deserve the respect OF human life... The police who killed the gunmen perserved life... he was intent on (and successful at) taking lives... and there is an obvious difference.

This gunmen... all "killers"... they don't care. They're apathetic to who they harm... They often say the opposite of love isn't hate, but indifference... and these types of killers are indifferent to their victims. This, in my opinion, is the disconnect.

...anyway...

You can look evil... you can "blow away pixels"... you can even join a "Vampire Web-Group"... and oddly enough, not be a killer... and not be indifferent to your "fellow man"... and care...

...and the rest of us must learn to not blame. We must remember, prevent, and teach.

If all parents taught their children the value of ALL human life, I do believe this would be a better planet... regardless of their fashion and music... and even philosophical choices.

In Addenda: I've just read through the news... Kimveer Gill, the gunman, was described as having a "pale and emotionless face"... meaning, in my eyes, he was not wearing a mask.

Wow. I'm shocked... the media pundit I listened to this morning got it wrong... and "blamed things" using incorrect data.

One would almost wonder if he simply wanted the "most convenient target" a little too much...?

Also: Please take some time to think about the victims... two of which are truly fighting for their lives... Click here to learn more... and say a wee prayer or pass a thought towards Anastasia De Sousa, the 18-year-old woman no longer with us because of this pointless and senseless act. Our thoughts and prayers are with her family and friends... and our best hopes and wishes to those recovering...

Passion... and where to find it.

Passion!

No, this isn't about anything tawdry...

Stump Speech

Is there anything better than listening to someone or reading something from someone who's "stirred" by their topic? The way a good speaker can literally make you emotionally involved with whatever their words are about? The way that, in essence, they can make you care... even when it's something that, perhaps, doesn't warrant a whole lot of your energy or time normally?

To be honest, this is one of the reasons I love pro-wrestling... and anyone who wants to take either public speaking or acting should spend some time watching it too.

Ric Flair

When a wrestler "cuts a promo" (does a speech) they are trying to convince you to watch their show... buy a ticket... otherwise "tune in" to what they're doing.

Now, considering that most of us are aware that the match finishes are pre-determined and, in some cases, we've seen the same men brawl before... they HAVE to make us care. It's part of their bread and butter.

Some might say politicians are in the same game, but I'd disagree... many politicos get their votes because of their particular party alliances or thanks to the leader of their party... they can more or less "just show up" for the most part.

...but wrestlers, and to a degree, actors, need to bring you emotionally to the table... they NEED to make you WANT to see what happens next... to "care".

Kurt Angle

Back during the heady days of the late 1990's and early 2000's when wrasslin' was at an apex in North America, I used to talk to fellow "marks" (fans) at work, and they'd say things like, "God damnit, I friggin' HATE Kurt Angle!" because he annoyed them... and I'd respond with, "Wow! Then he's doing a GREAT job!"

You see, Kurt (back then) was trying to MAKE you hate him... to make you want to part with your money to watch him get his butt handed to him by a "baby face" wrestler (a "good guy"). Kurt was (and hopefully will be again) an excellent "heel" (or "bad guy").

By the same token, certain "faces" (good guys) drew people in by being PASSIONATE about their quest to beat up the "heel"... they invoke images of possibly sympathy... good versus evil... how the "heel" needed a comeuppance... and, many people "cared"... and set aside disbelief to lose themselves in the passion of the moment.

Of course, it's all nonsense... it's scripted... written... and in cases, fully choreographed.

Heck, when a wrassler' can't cut a promo, they send him out with a manager... or a "valet" who (hopefully) can and, through their efforts, make you care about "their" wrestler.

...but you're emotionally involved... you're waiting on baited breath... and yet, you know it's pre-determined.

Arn Anderson

For excellent examples of "ace promo" guys, I'd rank Ric Flair, Paul Heyman, Jim Cornette, Arn Anderson, Mick Foley... and yeah, Vince MacMahon can cut an amazing promo.

Out of the wrestling world, look at your favourite TV shows... the "cliffhangers" at the end of a season... they want you to be emotionally involved... to be waiting on the edge of your seat...

Passion can make you WANT things... and when someone exudes passion, they can and will drag you in gladly...

(Thought you'd go a day without seeing this name, well... sorry... but it's a good fit for this topic.) Think about Steve Irwin, the late "Crocodile Hunter" had passion... let's face it, although many tuned in and watched him for his "stunts", you stayed tune... and listened.

Lincoln Kennedy Churchill Tudor

Imagine if Abraham Lincoln delivered the Gettysburgh Address with all the raw emotion of a day-old donut? Imagine Winston Churchill delivering the, "We'll Fight Them On The Beaches..." speech with the intensity of a bank teller giving you your balance? What if John F. Kennedy said, "Ich Bein Ein Berliner" with the same tone as one orders a Big Mac? What if Queen Elizabeth delivered the Armada speech with the same delivery as a grade five student reciting a book report?

You get the idea...

Passion is what makes it happen.

As I said though, it's not strictly speaking... the written word, when done with passion, can illicit a great response. I know that because, although we haven't "succeeded" in our quest, we have many people reading this blog regularly and are "rooting" for our dream to come true... because Sue and I do have a passion for saving the bus, and with few exceptions, I think we communicate this well...

My point?

Well, I've read a couple of blogs that complain that "we" just don't get it... that people aren't digging their blog... Well, my suggestion to those folks, PASSION!

Write about something that you're passionate about... and BRING ME into that passion... Draw me (and the other readers) into your stuff!

...and again, you need to see what passion CAN look like??? Find some Paul Heyman videos... Watch a Ric Flair promo... or Mick Foley...

Passion... emotion... feelings... bring your audience WITH you...

Wrestler's "act" angry and "act" intense... Actor's often immerse themselves into their part so you feel their character's energy... politicians and activists pull from their own experience and thoughts...

...but when they do it well, it draws you in... and sometimes, that's a very good (or at least, an interesting) thing… and gets attention.
