The Dream Catches On!!!!... but is it for everyone?

No news to report on our endeavours with Regent Low Height 3... we're trying still, but nothing yet... we still need help... and we are begging you to learn more if this site/blog are new to you. Click here (opens a new browser) to find out about our "cause" and the dream we're hoping people will help us with lest we lose the chance forever...

Yup, the site and blog are getting GREAT traffic and people are finding it... well... if nothing else, entertaining if a bit preachy and a bit whiney at times.

A few people (four to be exact) have e-mailed because they are now interested in getting a bus for themselves which is great!

BUT...

Before running out in a "spending frenzy" to get the Routemaster of your dreams, please consider the following...

Routemaster

#1: In terms of size and speed, this ain't even close to your father's Oldsmobile!

These buses are tall... they average between 13' and 16' tall... and they can be long... 25' and longer... This will not fit in a standard driveway as a rule... and a "standard garage"...? Forget it!

Some models, in some locations, will be considered "oversized" vehicles and may require a special permit.

As for speed, the newer buses can do okay at about 60 MPH... but some have a maximum speed of 40 MPH and less. The Regent Low Height, for an example, does about 35 MPH max!

I won't be playing "Goggles Paisano" racing in the Indianrockolis 500 in Regent Low Height 3 if we get her, that's for sure!

Not Goggles

#2: In terms of repairs, they are definitely not like your father's Oldsmobile!

They are older British buses... many of them out of production.

Several current owners of buses have told me to find and acquire another Regent Low Height (aside from RLH 3) to be used to cannibalize for parts as they are tricky to find.

Spares, as a rule, will come from Britain... and be pricey to buy, difficult to find, and expensive to ship.

Scrapped Buses

#3: Driving may seem at the outset to be like your father's Oldsmobile... but it's not... it's more difficult.

This is a bus... I've heard people saying that driving a certain car is "LIKE" driving a bus... well, now you'll know why this comparison is made. The steering is heavy, it's most likely not an automatic transmission... and mileage? How does 10 miles to the gallon sound!

Oh, don't forget... some places MAY require a "special drivers license" for the bus...

...and it's a "right-hand drive vehicle"...

Driving a British double-decker will be a challenge!

Skid Test

#4: Planning on running tours? Hey, just for chuckles, call the insurance company!

Insurance on a commercial tours bus is brutal... well, in Ontario it's brutal... and it's a safe bet it will be other places too.

Spacer

...and the above are just the "big four" I can think of on the fly!

Basically, as just a caveat, buying an old British Bus can be, from what I've heard, a very enjoyable and unique thing... but also a colossal hassle and major expense.

NOW, you might say to yourself, "Well, then what are you, you poor guy, going to do with Regent Low Height 3! If it's SUCH a hassle and so expensive, isn't going to be a huge albatross around your neck!?!"

Nope.

Basically, RLH 3, without help, will most likely be scrapped... it's already being used as a rubbish tip in a barn... so with my wife and kid's permissions, we found not one but TWO good storage areas available (for free) with friends and family and plan to just remove her to safety for now.

We believe that our financial picture will improve and as it does, we'll work on the bus.

We're patient people... and if it takes years, so be it... we're willing to invest in it over the long run.

So, that's our initial plan for "our bus"... if we can save her in time.

RLH 3"

This post is a caveat... Sue and I have done our homework... and have a reasonable idea of what we're in for... and if someone else is considering buying an old British Double-Decker, we want you to avoid the pitfalls that may lead you to, after purchasing it, to consider scrapping it as many have when they find out what's involved...

If you really want a bus or could use a bus, then go for it! But remember the bits above... and consider things carefully.

The Current Time in Toronto is...

One Old Green Bus

This blog was started in April of 2006... its original itent was really twofold. One was to be a "sounding board" for it's author... and the other... well...

At the time we started this, your humble author was unemployed and going through the usual crisis situations that arise from being jobless.

We (my wife, stepdaughter, and I,) used to "amuse" ourselves (read: Take our minds off our troubles) by more-or-less fantasizing as a family about what we'd do when things "turned around". Along this route, we discussed going to England on a vacation... and in that, alighted on "double-decker buses".

We kind of adopted one bus... Regent Low Height 3... as Our Bus... and we used to talk about what we'd do with "our bus" if we got it... from fixing it up to the trips we'd take on it.

Along the way, we became students of the history of this bus which HONESTLY seemd it was truly for us... trouble was, we couldn't afford the bus and weren't in a position to work towards the bus... so we had a couple of options...

Since the bus' position was sketchy (there's a chance she might be sold for scrap or "carved up" in other ways,) we could forget about her and pretend she didn't exist...

...or we could TRY... ask for help... put our dream of owning and saving "One Old Green Bus" into the universe and see what happens...

As of February, 2008, we knew that there was a perspective buyer for the bus (not us, obviously,) and made some difficult decisions... The first was that we wouldn't "beg" for help anymore and give the little money we received to a few different charities both online and off... and the second was simply hope that either we find a corporate sponsor (for an "ad" idea we have, click here to about read that,) or even a patron who see's the value in a silly family's dream...

But, if the bus is about to be purchased by someone who's planning on restoring it and they "get there first", we wish them well and are glad that at least Our One Old Green Bus is in a safe place being looked after.

For now, though, we are still hoping WE might be the ones to get our One Old Green Bus and see a family dream come true...

Regardless, this blog WILL continue... and we will still "go for" a bus of our own... but this blog will ALWAYS be dedicated to our own One Old Green Bus.
