Good News from Scottish London Bus Group... and a little magic too...

From the Scottish London Bus Group, I received word that, apparently, the "Heritage Routes" in London which are where the last remaining Routemasters are running will be running "indefinitely"... which is very good news as there were rumblings that even these last few remaining traditional "Old London Buses" would be taken out of service...

According to Mr. Graham Laurie...

My Routemaster Association magazine came through my letter-box today and reading magazine editor Leon Daniels editorial, he assured everyone that the Routemaster Heritage services will continue indefinitely in London which will hopefully put to bed any fears that they may be quietly withdrawn.

I haven't mentioned it to Sue yet, but she'll be THRILLED to know that one of the heritage routes is the "9 Bus"... long story...

This is FANTASTIC news as I do hope to return with Sue and our kiddolo... and I'd love for them to experience a "real ride" in a London Transport Routemaster... Being on the Nine-Road will make it that much more special.

You may think me nuts, but if you've never done it and find yourself in London, this is a treat that should be a mandatory thing for everyone to do... take a ride in an old platform loading, double-decker bus... and the Routemaster is one of the best to do it in.

I know I'll be taking my little one on the Nine-Bus... perhaps, but not absolutely, she'll love the ride as much as I did at her age.

Okay, hold that last thought...

Before I get the inevitable e-mails, of course it's no where NEAR as great a ride as one get's in an Regent Low Height... like... um... say... I know! RLH 3! (Yeah, the bus we're hoping to save...)

Sadly, she's still being used as a garbage tip in a barn... but with your help, we can change that... and make my entire family believe in dreams.

Now for a little bit of "magic"...

Omnibus Newsletter

MANY, MANY, MANY thanks to Mr. Andrew Gardner, editor of Omnibus, the newsletter for BaMMOT or Birmingham and Midland Motor Omnibus Trust who was VERY kind enough to (snail) mail me a copy of the May 2006 newsletter in which he, Mr. Paul Gray, Mr. Stephen Round, and Mr. Roy Hennefer researched what happened to BMMO 4111... better know to North American "Who" fans as "The Magic Bus".

The Magic Bus

(BMMO 4111 is the bus pictured above... I hope *ALL* of the fans of "The Who" soon know that and ask questions because we still aren't 100% sure of the buses fate!)

According to the newsletter, the buses were last seen in California in or around the Universal Studios lot... but has not been seen for a very long time.

"Rumour" (reasonably substantial rumour) told us it had been scrapped, but it's sister bus, BMMO 4110 was still around...

She's in grave danger of being scrapped too... which would be a shame as there are only 2 known complete models of this bus left... out of (at one time) 350.

We're fixated (admittedly) on RLH 3, but are hoping someone who reads this (and catches the "bug" perhaps?) might consider rescuing the old girl seen above as a preservation project.

The trust newsletter goes into MUCH detail and for those interested, I'd recommend contacting them to see if you can purchase a "back-issue" from them.

Anyway, finding the newsletter in our mailbox was a VERY pleasant surprise today... and I'll be pouring over it tonight and tomorrow... Thanks again, Mr. Gardner... not only for the reading material, but for all the great work your organisation does in preserving these bits of rolling history.

We would miss them if they were gone.

For Magic Bus fans, both ourselves and BaMMOT will keep looking for information... and should we find out anything, we will share the information... good or bad...

I'll be honest, the current status of BMMO 4111 is not looking good.

The Current Time in Toronto is...

One Old Green Bus

This blog was started in April of 2006... its original itent was really twofold. One was to be a "sounding board" for it's author... and the other... well...

At the time we started this, your humble author was unemployed and going through the usual crisis situations that arise from being jobless.

We (my wife, stepdaughter, and I,) used to "amuse" ourselves (read: Take our minds off our troubles) by more-or-less fantasizing as a family about what we'd do when things "turned around". Along this route, we discussed going to England on a vacation... and in that, alighted on "double-decker buses".

We kind of adopted one bus... Regent Low Height 3... as Our Bus... and we used to talk about what we'd do with "our bus" if we got it... from fixing it up to the trips we'd take on it.

Along the way, we became students of the history of this bus which HONESTLY seemd it was truly for us... trouble was, we couldn't afford the bus and weren't in a position to work towards the bus... so we had a couple of options...

Since the bus' position was sketchy (there's a chance she might be sold for scrap or "carved up" in other ways,) we could forget about her and pretend she didn't exist...

...or we could TRY... ask for help... put our dream of owning and saving "One Old Green Bus" into the universe and see what happens...

As of February, 2008, we knew that there was a perspective buyer for the bus (not us, obviously,) and made some difficult decisions... The first was that we wouldn't "beg" for help anymore and give the little money we received to a few different charities both online and off... and the second was simply hope that either we find a corporate sponsor (for an "ad" idea we have, click here to about read that,) or even a patron who see's the value in a silly family's dream...

But, if the bus is about to be purchased by someone who's planning on restoring it and they "get there first", we wish them well and are glad that at least Our One Old Green Bus is in a safe place being looked after.

For now, though, we are still hoping WE might be the ones to get our One Old Green Bus and see a family dream come true...

Regardless, this blog WILL continue... and we will still "go for" a bus of our own... but this blog will ALWAYS be dedicated to our own One Old Green Bus.
