Bunches of Stuff for a Simcoe Day Holiday!

It's Simcoe Day up Ontario Way... which means STAT HOLIDAY! (With Pay!)

John Graves Simcoe

To quote the article linked above...

John Graves Simcoe was more than just a colonial governor -- he abolished slavery, created Yonge Street, and even inspired the agricultural fair tradition that would give rise to the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair.

His wife, Elizabeth Posthuma Gwillim was a also a very important figure... ahead of her time, she was a strict abolishinist, believed that the native (first nations) people had much to teach us, not the other way around, and (in tune with the paranormal blog) was "Toronto's first documented UFO witness." (...believe it or not, it's true... and happened in the late 1700's!!!)

Not to be outdone, J.G. Simcoe is a small part in the ghost of Raynham Hall! (No, not the one with the "Brown Lady" in England, but that of Sally Townshend in New York...) Sally is said to be haunting because she chose "patriotism" of her country over her love of British Major John Andre... by snitching on his activities in terms of one Benedict Arnold and the plans for West Point during the American Revolution. Sally had a "thing" for Andre who was billited with J.G. in Raynham... and as most historians know, Andre would end up hanged as a spy... According to legend, Sally still haunts her old home in a post-mortem struggle over her decision. (Simcoe, rather obviously, made it out safely and ended up in Upper Canada.)

(Yup, there's TWO haunted Raynham Halls an ocean apart!)

Brown Lady

Either way, it's a stat holiday!

...which means I'm sitting, relaxing... and the most dangerous thing... thinking...

Hey! It's overcast right now... with a chance of rain... I don't begrudge working away at the 'puter!

Of Things Busly...

I picked up, via eBay a couple of bus enthusiast magazines from Britain dated 1967 (my birthyear!)... "Buses Illustrated".

I love reading old magazines... it's a thing... My parents used to have very old copies of LIFE magazine at our cottage... dating from the 1930's and 40's... but these are a bit of a trudge, I admit...

Although the pictures are great and the ads are fantastic (as a Canadian, seeing ads for things in guineas and schillings is very cool... I've only ever known pounds and pence...) the verbiage is DEFINITELY for the hard-core bus enthusiast... much of it being about routes, models and parts, transfers of vehicles... hey, it's a trade mag meant for the "hard core" fan.

I understand it... but they're not ringing my chimes.

I guess, despite understanding why people would want the subject to be taken very seriously, I prefer information from the driver's and passenger's point of view... something more "readable for the masses".

I have read my fair share of scientific papers and reports... and I get 'em... but when I'm reading something (or even writing something) that is of "general" (or at least, "mass") interest, I prefer to be entertained while I'm educated.

So, not easy "reading"... so, I can honestly say, I am mostly "only looking at the pictures".

Should I be concerned that I mostly "read" these two magazines in the bathroom???

Of More Things Busly...

As an update on our beloved and still unattainable Regent Low Height 3, it's not looking too good right now.

Although there's some "weirdness" I mentioned in a previous entry, it could take six-months to a year for that to see any real movement... and since the family is still "just making ends meet", saving isn't happening too well... and I've had no nibbles about the pixel ad space or anything.

Hits are still good (always growing!) but communications are down...

We're not losing hope... but I admit we're all a little more... well... cynical about the outcome.

Every day we don't move forward is another day that she's bound to end up scrapped... and forward momentum, except with the aforementioned "weirdness", seems to have halted...

Quite frankly, I don't know what else I can do?

All I know is that all three of us, my wife, my kid, and obviously myself, are hoping, praying, thinking, dreaming... but it's becoming more a reality that we probably won't succeed in rescuing the bus.

If ANYONE out there has ideas on how to get this blog and it's sites out there to more folks (remembering our "media advertising budget" is zero,) PLEASE let us know.

This means more to all of us than most people can even guess.

If you haven't yet, please click here and read the page I wrote about all this...

Fellow North Americans (and others who don't get regular British television)... Big Brother in the UK is a rolling train wreck.

It is... if you don't believe me, click here.

Rumours of my demise have been greatly exaggerated... maybe...

The Magic Bus

I've recently heard from a Mr. Andrew Gardner who is the editor of a newsletter named "Omnibus" which is the official newsletter for BaMMOT...

If I may quote some of what he had to say...

Both BMMO D7s were at Universal Studios in Hollywood, 4111 shipped from the UK in May 1964 and 4110 shipped from the UK in March 1965. We presume that the "Magic Bus" photo shoot was done at Universal in 1968. This seems to have been one of the last sightings of 4111. However, while "lost trace" can mean that the vehicle has been scrapped, and is a not unreasonable assumption, sometimes vehicles are hidden away in all sorts of odd places. (Several older buses in our collection had been converted into dwellings, for instance.), did my contacts just lose track of "The Magic Bus"???

Time will tell... we're keeping up on this...

I hope to be able to report that the bus is still around... and in some kooky way, I think it would be cool if it was now a "home" to someone...

So, the memorial service for BMMO 4111 (The Magic Bus) might be premature!!! (Let's hope!)

Well, there's your holiday entry... two lengthy ones in a row... I hope no one's ticked at me really eating up your 30 seconds (obviously more) but I do also hope that my writing and stuff is a little more entertaining than those two bus magazines I bought!!!

I hope everyone's having a good Monday... and that everyone who has a holiday (like ourselves) is doing good and being safe... I'd also like to send a bit of a "shout-out" to the Canadian's currently stationed in Afghanistan... Thanks guys and gals... you're appreciated here back in the Great White North... you're making us proud.

...and now, your moment of Zen...

The Current Time in Toronto is...

One Old Green Bus

This blog was started in April of 2006... its original itent was really twofold. One was to be a "sounding board" for it's author... and the other... well...

At the time we started this, your humble author was unemployed and going through the usual crisis situations that arise from being jobless.

We (my wife, stepdaughter, and I,) used to "amuse" ourselves (read: Take our minds off our troubles) by more-or-less fantasizing as a family about what we'd do when things "turned around". Along this route, we discussed going to England on a vacation... and in that, alighted on "double-decker buses".

We kind of adopted one bus... Regent Low Height 3... as Our Bus... and we used to talk about what we'd do with "our bus" if we got it... from fixing it up to the trips we'd take on it.

Along the way, we became students of the history of this bus which HONESTLY seemd it was truly for us... trouble was, we couldn't afford the bus and weren't in a position to work towards the bus... so we had a couple of options...

Since the bus' position was sketchy (there's a chance she might be sold for scrap or "carved up" in other ways,) we could forget about her and pretend she didn't exist...

...or we could TRY... ask for help... put our dream of owning and saving "One Old Green Bus" into the universe and see what happens...

As of February, 2008, we knew that there was a perspective buyer for the bus (not us, obviously,) and made some difficult decisions... The first was that we wouldn't "beg" for help anymore and give the little money we received to a few different charities both online and off... and the second was simply hope that either we find a corporate sponsor (for an "ad" idea we have, click here to about read that,) or even a patron who see's the value in a silly family's dream...

But, if the bus is about to be purchased by someone who's planning on restoring it and they "get there first", we wish them well and are glad that at least Our One Old Green Bus is in a safe place being looked after.

For now, though, we are still hoping WE might be the ones to get our One Old Green Bus and see a family dream come true...

Regardless, this blog WILL continue... and we will still "go for" a bus of our own... but this blog will ALWAYS be dedicated to our own One Old Green Bus.
