What with all the talk of the fest in the local news, an old idea sprang to mind...

From September 7th through the 16th, Toronto (my home town) presents the aptly named Toronto International Film Festival.

It's a big deal here... and although we're fed a lot of news saying it's an "internationally, famous, and important" festival second only to Cannes, I wonder quite often if this is just media spin to make Toronto feel good...?

Actually, I shouldn't say such things... after all, I do believe I attended junior high school with last years (and the current?) festival's director of communications, Gabriel Free...

I digress...

I'll give you that the fest usually does have some great films... but for the local media and whatnot, it's the "star power" that grabs 'em. Many celebs come to push and promote their films and that leads to many "star sightings" and loads of gossip usually... moreso than the usual "filming" that occurs in the city. (Toronto "backdrops" for many films set in New York City and whatnot...)

Actually, through my efforts with The Toronto Ghosts and Hauntings Research Society, I usually get one or two interesting pieces through the fest from folks that write to me about one thing or another... "We" keep everything confidential and Ergo: Every year around festival time, I get a few "famous" folks writing to me with questions like, "Where's a cool place to visit that's haunted?", or "What's a good, small ghost tour I can take?", or "Is my hotel one of the haunted places in Toronto?"

Oh, these are all questions I've gotten from folks people would consider "famous". Actors and directors... mostly I hear from directors... which is kind of odd, but that's the way it is.

Oh, and don't ask "Who!!?!??!" because by law (I know that sounds funny, but I'll explain,) I can't tell you. We're (the TGHRS) governed by The Ontario Privacy Act of March 2004 which prohibits giving out ANY private information about anyone who contacts us about ghosts and hauntings unless they've given us express permission to do so... including names of folks who write to us.

- - Anyway! - -

About the kooky idea...

One of my friends at my office suggested, knowing that I had a metric tonne of "Double-Decker Bus Toys" (die-cast buses and whatnot) that I try to get celebs to sign a few to help with our ultimate goal... and then auction the buses on eBay.

It's not a bad idea... but in honesty, I doubt I'd actually be very successfull... I think that too many folks wouldn't have the time to find out about the whole thing... and would simply see it as a "cash grab" or the like.

To be honest, MOST people who don't read this blog (thoroughly) or the whole site see things that way... I can't blame them... To those that have read, YOU know there's more involved... much more... but how do you convey that in 30 seconds or less?

I'd feel odd... running up to someone like a crazed fan saying, "Hey! Could you sign this bus with a Sharpie?" and I'm 99% sure most of the folks (except that handful of celebs that read the ghost site and one's that would simply be perplexed) would turn me down immediately... and again, I don't blame them.

Am I defeating an idea before trying it out? Perhaps... but I'd prefer to think that I'm trying to come up with a better idea... a better plan... a better way... and hey, I'm also throwing it out to the "blogsphere"... anyone got an idea on how to do this?

...after all, I've got until September 7th to come up with a cunning plan... :)

Quick note about the movies... I can't say what or who, but there is more "weirdness" (that's not really appropriate, but...) with movies and this site, 'our bus', this blog, this dream... and my family.

I can't say more than this now, but it could be BIG news... or no news...

I'm kind of a "don't count your chickens before they hatch" kinda guy, so I'm still plugging away... but there's high-weirdness afoot!

Addendum: 12:51 EDT Got this kinda cool site from Penny on our message board...

The Current Time in Toronto is...

One Old Green Bus

This blog was started in April of 2006... its original itent was really twofold. One was to be a "sounding board" for it's author... and the other... well...

At the time we started this, your humble author was unemployed and going through the usual crisis situations that arise from being jobless.

We (my wife, stepdaughter, and I,) used to "amuse" ourselves (read: Take our minds off our troubles) by more-or-less fantasizing as a family about what we'd do when things "turned around". Along this route, we discussed going to England on a vacation... and in that, alighted on "double-decker buses".

We kind of adopted one bus... Regent Low Height 3... as Our Bus... and we used to talk about what we'd do with "our bus" if we got it... from fixing it up to the trips we'd take on it.

Along the way, we became students of the history of this bus which HONESTLY seemd it was truly for us... trouble was, we couldn't afford the bus and weren't in a position to work towards the bus... so we had a couple of options...

Since the bus' position was sketchy (there's a chance she might be sold for scrap or "carved up" in other ways,) we could forget about her and pretend she didn't exist...

...or we could TRY... ask for help... put our dream of owning and saving "One Old Green Bus" into the universe and see what happens...

As of February, 2008, we knew that there was a perspective buyer for the bus (not us, obviously,) and made some difficult decisions... The first was that we wouldn't "beg" for help anymore and give the little money we received to a few different charities both online and off... and the second was simply hope that either we find a corporate sponsor (for an "ad" idea we have, click here to about read that,) or even a patron who see's the value in a silly family's dream...

But, if the bus is about to be purchased by someone who's planning on restoring it and they "get there first", we wish them well and are glad that at least Our One Old Green Bus is in a safe place being looked after.

For now, though, we are still hoping WE might be the ones to get our One Old Green Bus and see a family dream come true...

Regardless, this blog WILL continue... and we will still "go for" a bus of our own... but this blog will ALWAYS be dedicated to our own One Old Green Bus.
