Toronto's Double-Deckers

Long, long ago, my hometown, Toronto, Ontario, Canada ran double-decker's with The Toronto Transit Commision from 1921 until about 1927.

The buses, one Associated Equipment Company 404 (AEC is the same company that built the bus this site and blog are really about, RLH 3,) and four Fifth Avenue Bus Company models...

Fifth Avenue Bus

What makes this interesting for your's truly is their route... which I only just learned of a couple of days back...

I have to set this up, so bear with me...

I'm firmly attached to the area I live in... the neighbourhood is a great one that I used to visit frequently and enjoyed being in and was thrilled to find an apartment that we could afford in this lovely section of town. Both my wife and myself are firmly entrenched here and hoping to buy our home here.

Now, cut forward to a few days ago...

I'm looking for "blog material" when I find a site listing the old TTC bus routes... and apparently, the old double-deckers only ran one route... guess which neighbourhood they ran through?

Fifth Avenue Bus

They would have run practically right beside my apartment.

I'd add this to the list of synchronicities between ourselves and RLH 3... but this one is really just a generic "interesting aside"...

Right now, the serious synchronicities with us and RLH 3 are...

#1: It's former residence in Roswell, New Mexico (...and the fact that Sue's a Ufologist and we both study the paranormal.) This one's my favourite!

#2: RLH 3 began life on May 31st, 1950... and I began life on May 31st, 1967... so we share a birthday.

#3: When last in England, I use to take a long walk through London almost every night... it ends up that the route I walked was RLH 3's "centre city" route when it came in from the country... this was it's longest lasting route when in service. Needless to say, the last time I was in London was 1995 and I knew nothing of RLH 3... I just liked the walk.

...and I'll add this one, but it's not perfect...

#4: While "Googling" RLH 3, I came across this...

Table of contents for Battlegrounds of freedom : a historical guide to the battlefields of the War of American Independence / Norman Desmarais.

RLH-3: Re-enacting, family activities, children and cooking.

...which I found weird since we're (the family) War of 1812 re-enactors.

Anyway, I still think it's very cool that double-deckers once ran past my home... perhaps RLH 3 will be rolling down the same route as they did... :)

1. Does your wife think that there might be some UFO embryos in the bus and the only way to know for sure is to watch carefully while restoring the bus?

2. Did any start service on June 22nd? ^_~

3. Wow, spooky

4. Even though I am encumbered with American citizenship, I support the Canadian side 100% and if there were ever to be a war between the US and Canada, I would defect to Canada's side.

#1: I spoke to her about this... she contemplated the thought and then said that "for a fee", she'd be happy to share her findings when the bus arrives! (The fee, of course, is the purchase price and shipping of the bus.) :)

#2: Probably... Is it your birthday today?

#3: Yeah, when I received an old route-map as a Christmas gift last year, I admit I almost plotzed. I was SINCERELY thankful that I had shared with Sue my walking stories... so she knew I wasn't whistling Dixie about the route.

#4: I doubt it will ever come to that... and if/when you do come up and you want, you can get into RevWar re-enacting or War of 1812 re-enacting... and then you can be on "Canada's Side"... granted, I often end up on both sides filling in the holes when men of the United States Armed Forces are in short-supply for re-enactments! Everyone up here wants to be a redcoat! :)

Due to a LARGE amount of projects which are mostly "offline", I will only be "blogging" Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays unless something REALLY begs me to blog about it.
Thanks for your understanding in this and be back to "full time blogging mode" come January 7th!

One Old Green Bus

Allow me to start with we do not own nor are we selling a bus. Just had to get that out...

This blog was started in April of 2006... during a very bad time for me and my family when money was very tight and life was very hard.

We maintained a happier outlook on life by fantasizing... talking about what we would do when times were better... and as Sue and myself are Anglophiles, England factored greatly into our "plans".

During these bad times, while looking at news items which, at the time included items about London removing their venerable old Routemasters, I came across one photo of an old green bus... and somehow, my whole family adopted it. It became very much "our bus". (Details about "our bus" are available by clicking here.)

Like most of you, I'd heard about the fellow who'd made a million dollars selling tiny ads online... and the fellow who did trades and turned a paper clip into a house... so I thought, since we couldn't make our bus actually into "our bus" (well beyond our means,) I'd try an "online" appeal... to make the focused item of our hopes into a tangible thing in our lives...

More specifically, in a burst of adult/juvenile optimism, I had hoped to show the youngest member of the family, who at the time was still very youthful and impressionable, that dreams really could become reality if you hope and, more importantly, try.

Well, I'm pretty sure you figured it out... we had limited succes in this venture... and the youngest has now reached an age where she is more traditionally "teenaged" cynical than much else about the world, which isn't a dreadful thing... but there's a "good news" portion to this... our personal situation with money is better, life has improved, and some people really liked my rambling here... so, I decided to keep things going... Yes, I will "give up" on asking for help on a bus... and have to give up on even trying as hard to get the bus through online means... and yes, be far more realistic... but I don't mind this "turn" of things as I actually enjoy venting, trying my hand at humour, and generally keeping on online presence outside my usual things.

Thanks to those who were/are "Busly Dream" enthusiasts... I suppose that our buses for now will be single-deck with the letters "TTC" emblazoned on them... but this blog will live as does our dream! (It's just a little quieter on that latter bit...)
