22 years and still tears...

My Dad

It will be 22 years in December... my dad passed away.

Every so often, I fool myself into thinking, "It was long ago... I've moved on..." and then something happens to remind me that no, despite my father and I never being really close, I do miss him terribly.

My sister sent a few pictures this morning of him... and due to my hasty departure from my parent's house (I was kicked out by my mom... long sad story which I'll spare you,) I had no pictures of him myself.

My family are not the tightest... not at all... and therefore, the only time I saw pictures of him was when I visited their homes.

Well, in came these pictures today... and I haven't seen the man's face in literally years... and yeah, I cried.

It's tough... but I've rolled (more or less) with the punches.

Lately, I wish more and more he was alive still so I could ask for guidance and whatnot.

Worse yet, I have an uncle... Uncle Gord... I actually liked my uncle. Hell, I'll say it... I loved him.

He's still around, but thanks to some rifts in the family, I haven't seen or heard from him since my Grandpere's funeral.

Uncle Gord and Dad

My uncle... my father's brother... was a fireman here in the city. I was prouder of him than one could imagine. As a kid, I looked up to him like mad. I still only have fond memories of him.

I will look him up shortly... I must...

...but back to dad...

It's father's day soon... and my dad's birthday was also in June... so a kinda double-whammy in the memory department...

...so these pics really hit home.

I thank my sister... I needed this (honestly) to remember my dad.

I wish he was here...

My Dad

Thanks... it honestly was a long time ago... so although there are moments (like this morning,) for the most part life simply goes on.

I often use my father as a "warning" to others though... Even though he had rotten kids, he really worked himself to death. He passed away at 50 working towards making what was already a very comfortable life "more comfortable"...

I wish he'd simply taken stock in things, cut down on work if not outright retired. He really could have... and obviously should have.

Hey Andrena...

Well, no dads are saints... some worse than others... and one always hopes that as "we" aged, any issues would mellow... with very few exceptions.

I don't know how bad your dad was, but I share your feelings of missing a dad... despite being an adult.

BTW: Read and enjoyed your blog!

This blog is called One Old Green Bus. Yup, the bus is green. What colour is the bus?

The Current Time in Toronto is...

One Old Green Bus

This blog was started in April of 2006... its original itent was really twofold. One was to be a "sounding board" for it's author... and the other... well...

At the time we started this, your humble author was unemployed and going through the usual crisis situations that arise from being jobless.

We (my wife, stepdaughter, and I,) used to "amuse" ourselves (read: Take our minds off our troubles) by more-or-less fantasizing as a family about what we'd do when things "turned around". Along this route, we discussed going to England on a vacation... and in that, alighted on "double-decker buses".

We kind of adopted one bus... Regent Low Height 3... as Our Bus... and we used to talk about what we'd do with "our bus" if we got it... from fixing it up to the trips we'd take on it.

Along the way, we became students of the history of this bus which HONESTLY seemd it was truly for us... trouble was, we couldn't afford the bus and weren't in a position to work towards the bus... so we had a couple of options...

Since the bus' position was sketchy (there's a chance she might be sold for scrap or "carved up" in other ways,) we could forget about her and pretend she didn't exist...

...or we could TRY... ask for help... put our dream of owning and saving "One Old Green Bus" into the universe and see what happens...

As of February, 2008, we knew that there was a perspective buyer for the bus (not us, obviously,) and made some difficult decisions... The first was that we wouldn't "beg" for help anymore and give the little money we received to a few different charities both online and off... and the second was simply hope that either we find a corporate sponsor (for an "ad" idea we have, click here to about read that,) or even a patron who see's the value in a silly family's dream...

But, if the bus is about to be purchased by someone who's planning on restoring it and they "get there first", we wish them well and are glad that at least Our One Old Green Bus is in a safe place being looked after.

For now, though, we are still hoping WE might be the ones to get our One Old Green Bus and see a family dream come true...

Regardless, this blog WILL continue... and we will still "go for" a bus of our own... but this blog will ALWAYS be dedicated to our own One Old Green Bus.
