What's the fascination with RLH 3?

Okay, I've had a few new mails THANKFULLY not about this blog... :)

Actually, I've had two that effectively asked me why so much energy towards the buses... well, more along the lines of "Why so much energy about the one bus?" based on the "much weirdness" in accordance with RLH 3 that I mention often...

Okay, let me explain BRIEFLY...

  • The picture of RLH 3 is the one that "snapped" me into bus enthusiasm. I saw it an BAM! Since then, I admit borderline obsession with the vehicles.
  • It's future is very much in doubt... it's likely to be scrapped or cut-up which would be a HUGE shame.
  • It's current "owners" don't seem to be very concerned with much of anything except recouping their storage money.
  • It's one of only 80 of it's type ever built so to have it carved up to allow for "restaurant equipment" or cut-up into scrap metal would be a borderline crime.
  • It shares a birthday with me... it rolled off the line on May 31st, 1950... I rolled off the line on May 31st seventeen years later.
  • It has a REALLY great story having, amongst other things, connections to a travelling circus and as a bonus, it has an owner past/present from Roswell, New Mexico... and since my wife is a Ufologist and I also have an interest, it intrigues us just for that!
  • It's current owner(s) would probably part with it for $8,000.00... maybe less... more than I have or will have for a while, but not an astronomical sum.
  • Ever since I was a kid, I've had a HUGE love of double-deckers... and gravitated to them whenever I was in London.

Now, although some see this as a "looney" thing, I'd point out that many men drool over cars and obsess about them... they have a thing for Chargers, Mustangs, Corvettes... that list goes WAY on...

Me, I've got a thing for these buses.

Will I find the $6k to purchase, $7k to ship? Maybe... honestly probably not... but I do and will dream.

On a different note, I did receive one other e-mail telling me that $20,000.00 is not a lot of money so what's the hold up... to which I say that this is true PROVIDED I made my old salary... or had a little bit of scratch capital to play with... which I don't.

We're currently scraping out after me being unemployed for almost two years solid... My old company laid off everyone and moved to another province.

Now, I am working... but for 1/3 of my old pay... and I am using every penny to get my family back on track. In fairness, my wife Sue DID keep us in home, clothing, and food... but we weren't fiscally healthy. Now, we're VERY close to being out of debt... but saving $13k USD would take years...

So, to be honest, right now RLH 3 might as well be $1billion... when you don't have it, there's not much you can do.

So, to the person who made that point, I do understand your point and don't think negatively about it, but that's why... I simply don't have the money... and won't without help or a miracle for some time.

Anyway, that's kinda where things stand... I have hope... and desire... and passion... but it'll take time and effort... and a little... okay, a LOT of luck! :)

Hi.
Just been reading about rlh3.
I am the coach hire manager for Countryliner in Guildford Surrey UK.
I have worked on the buses for 36 years and when I went to school I used to travel on RLH's. I think they gave me the bug which has given me a steady, if poorley paid job for life.
I have been looking up the history of RLH 3 and she seems to have spent most of her working life at Amersham Garage which was in the countryside north of London. For about a year she was based at Guildford, which is my base, and worked in roue 463, which we still operate!
London buses were normally painted red if they worked in the central area - but around 1000 buses worked in the country bus area which surrounds London and were painted Lincoln green. Your bus was a green bus all her life in England,so please don't paint her red! Google rlh 48 to see what she could look like after restoration. I have been involved in restoring another old bus since 1972 (a Southdown Guy Arab), and it's only just finished, so don't expect results overnight. Best of luck.

Hi mark chadwick... Wow, this post is almost a year old!

We haven't had any real success with RLH 3 and from some of the folks that are nearby where she's stored, we may be in for a very long job getting her road-ready.

Our plan, should we get her, is to actually outfit her as a "daytripper", but ensure that she can be restored to full London Country glory when we're done... and of course, we'd keep her green.

I'm fortunate to be in regular contact with Ewen Pring of TimeBus who's been very valuable as far as information and ideas for restoration and repairs... so we have a decent idea of how long it SHOULD take... and then add two years.

Thanks again so much for posting a comment! I'm off to visit your site now!

One Old Green Bus

Allow me to start with we do not own nor are we selling a bus. Just had to get that out...

This blog was started in April of 2006... during a very bad time for me and my family when money was very tight and life was very hard.

We maintained a happier outlook on life by fantasizing... talking about what we would do when times were better... and as Sue and myself are Anglophiles, England factored greatly into our "plans".

During these bad times, while looking at news items which, at the time included items about London removing their venerable old Routemasters, I came across one photo of an old green bus... and somehow, my whole family adopted it. It became very much "our bus". (Details about "our bus" are available by clicking here.)

Like most of you, I'd heard about the fellow who'd made a million dollars selling tiny ads online... and the fellow who did trades and turned a paper clip into a house... so I thought, since we couldn't make our bus actually into "our bus" (well beyond our means,) I'd try an "online" appeal... to make the focused item of our hopes into a tangible thing in our lives...

More specifically, in a burst of adult/juvenile optimism, I had hoped to show the youngest member of the family, who at the time was still very youthful and impressionable, that dreams really could become reality if you hope and, more importantly, try.

Well, I'm pretty sure you figured it out... we had limited succes in this venture... and the youngest has now reached an age where she is more traditionally "teenaged" cynical than much else about the world, which isn't a dreadful thing... but there's a "good news" portion to this... our personal situation with money is better, life has improved, and some people really liked my rambling here... so, I decided to keep things going... Yes, I will "give up" on asking for help on a bus... and have to give up on even trying as hard to get the bus through online means... and yes, be far more realistic... but I don't mind this "turn" of things as I actually enjoy venting, trying my hand at humour, and generally keeping on online presence outside my usual things.

Thanks to those who were/are "Busly Dream" enthusiasts... I suppose that our buses for now will be single-deck with the letters "TTC" emblazoned on them... but this blog will live as does our dream! (It's just a little quieter on that latter bit...)
